same price and specs as the n80vn-c1 except for the 4650 (obviously) and the 16:9 screen (which seems like an odd change).

Frankly... if it was a 16:10 and a 1440x900, i would have my pre order in already...
Sadly, i will not be purchasing an n81 because of the 16:9

There was no reason to expect 1440x900, but the change is aspect ratio is surprising (and a big negative in my book, 800 pixels is already so little).

It is still nice to see that they chose to go with DDR3 for the VRAM as opposed to cheaper DDR2!

    Le Gasp!

I'm liking the GDDR3 memory rather than plain ol' DDR3.

EDIT: And still 1 GB of it despite the 128 bit bus card. When will they learn?

    actually Budhal is right

ATI THEMSELVES list there 4000 mobile graphics options as DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3 i dont know if that was a typo on there part(im pretty sure it wasnt) but that was what was stated.

i think they put in a lot of vram purposely to trick noobs who think they got the laptop equivalent of a 295gtx
i know when i first started looking into gfx cards i would have been tricked for sure, especially because most games write: min req 256 mb card or better

True, but Nvidia has been doing this for a while now. After all, the majority of buyers are mostly noobs, and even if you were a PC guru, wouldn't you want to advertise your GPU as "1GB VRAM" instead of "1GB VRAM but has no performance difference to 512MB VRAM" when you're selling your laptop?

I don't believe any GPUs use DDR3 SDRAM memory, though some use DDR2 due to their low cost. Most CPUs use GDDR3, which is actually much more similar to DDR2 than DDR3. Currently, only a few ATI cards utilize GDDR5. Currently there is a lot of confusion, most likely due to marketing people misinterpreting technical information and hence it spreads. Another example of this is the misnomer of SATA II, which should actually be SATA 300.

The exterior would be exactly the same as the N80 series.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking... vram=video memory. All dedicated GPUs will have vram. I remember reading an article saying anything over 512mb of vram does not benefit at all in terms of graphics performance until the bandwidth capacities are increased (currently they are 64bit, 128bit and 256bit).

Hi, guys. I'm just considering to buy n81 and have read that you estimated the 16:9 screen as a drawback. I dont understand much in laptops and want to know why do you think the 16:9 screen is too bad for this laptop?

Some people don't like the lesser resolution of the screen. Personally, I don't mind it. My advice is to go to the store, open up some websites, read or watch some videos and see how you like it.

All future models for all brands will have 16:9 screens. LCD manufacturers will soon stop producing 16:10 and 16:9 will be the new standard.

If you see any new laptops with 16:10 aspect ratios, it's because they are trying to clear their inventories.

Well that's something I did not know. So they are going even further on the slope of widescreen ratios. I know they are good when it comes to watching movies and playing games... but then there are those of us who also code programs and documents (non-WYSIWYG) on the screen. Who would really like not to have to scroll a lot. I know the "two windows side by side" argument but it doesn't hold much water in my opinion -- I want to maximize the use of the screen for what I am doing at that particular moment. I guess I'm part of a minority. :)

    [/rant][/offtopic]

Sorry about that. Had to get it out. :)

Well it's not really a huge "no-no" and the difference between 16:9 and 16:10 is not a major one -- but it is noticeable. Besides, I don't even like 16:10 (currently on a 4:3 ASUS V6J).

(PS: I'm also on XP and will be at least until Windows 7 goes mainstream.)

the n81 is best 14 inch that ive seen, but they made some changes i dont like too much.

why are they using a T processor instead of P series. it runs 10 watts hotter. some people dont care, but why use a older processor series on a new laptop. especially when you know your going to put the fastest graphics you can find in a 14 inch. it shares the cooling system with the processor. so thats just stupid.

Does anyone know the actual weight of the N81Vp-C1? Some websites are listing it as 5.2 pounds, others have it at 6.5 pounds. Gentech, if you're reading this, can you confirm the weight for me?

I'm trying to decide between the N81Vp and the F6Ve. If the N81 is 5.2 pounds, I'll consider it. If it's 6.5 pounds, I'll definitely go with the F6Ve.

    Thanks.

The correct weight is 5.2 pounds with 6 cell battery installed.

Thank you. I'm planning to buy a notebook from you on Monday. The N81Vp is starting to look like the one.

The single spec that I'm not crazy about is the screen resolution. My old laptop (Asus A8Js) had 1440x900. The N81 with a sharper screen would be perfect. But the LED backlighting is a huge plus. My daughter has a Eee 1000H with LED backlight, and the brightness range is amazing.

Any benchmarks done yet, the 2 gaming demos shown on the GenTech site look pretty good, the only fault I can find about this laptop is cosmetic, the grey/dark bronze color on the inside surrounding the keyboard looks out of place and what's with ASUS having all the "scratched" look on most of it's lids, a simple black or other solid color would look much better in my own humble opinion, but hey that's just me.
Still can't help being impressed with it's gaming power,I wonder how well it would run Crysis?
