Hey GenTech, can you post about the heat/noise coming from this laptop? I saw the video with the temps, but that doesn't tell the whole story about fan noise, etc.

I have the F3sv (which I bought from you!) but I think it's afflicted with the nvidia 8xxx heat issue fiasco, so my fan runs nonstop like a jet on take off. I'm liking the N81 so far, but this noise concern would be the deal breaker. Can I safely take it to the library (a VERY quiet one) without making anal grad students mad? Thanks! You guys are awesome.

The heat issue fiasco as you call it does not make the GPUs overheat. It makes them less resistant to heating up/cooling down cycles. Overheating is the fault of the respective computer's cooling system.

In your case, have you cleaned up the dust from the fan and the heat radiator recently? If not I strongly suggest you do it. You may find it improves temps and fan noise significantly.

if by cleaning you mean removing the bottom panel and clearing out whatever i can with a hand-pumped air compressor-thingy, then yeah, i've given that a try.

the noise is just like what you hear in the video, it run pretty quiet.

F3Sv also runs quiet as far as I can remember.

I'm almost sold on this laptop except that it comes with a 32 bit operating system. Isn't it true Microsoft is giving free 64-bit upgrades?

Does this apply to this laptop?

I heard a lot of people here said OEM's key can not switch x86<->x64, but I did that with this guide.

So when you say "pretty quiet", would I be able to take this notebook into a very quiet library and look at powerpoints, stream audio, surf the net, etc. without bothering people with fan noise? Is it ever completely silent??

I'd compare "quiet" with my F3sv, but the thing's fan runs non-stop. According to RivaTuner my gpu's IDLE temp with nothing running but my browser and rhapsody is 73C... hence the reason I think I got stung by nVidia w/ a bunk graphics card.

What I really want to do is make sure it's not Asus' cooling solution that's exacerbating the problem on the F3sv. I'm a student who spends a lot of time in the library and other quiet study place, so I really don't want a laptop that makes much noise (even whispers are loud in our library!). I also want a laptop that'll play games at decent settings. So, the N81 looks like it might fit the bill, I just need to be sure about the noise thing. Thanks for helpin' the cause.

There's really no reason to purchase the N81Vp-C1 from Newegg when it's cheaper from resellers, not to mention the free and personalized tech support you get from them.

Ok I worked a little on the Owners thread. Basically filled out the 2nd post with a drivers guide and added some screen shots. I will someday finish the review  .

Right, I ordered from xoticpc.com. Does it really take 3 to 7 days to ship from them? That's what my order status says!!!

If you ordered a non-customized Asus notebook it will generally ship out a little quicker. The 3-7 business days for production is for custom built/customized notebooks.

Hi, i know this is a dumb question, but i really hate vista...

what are your thoughts if you really choose XP instead?
what would the outcome be without the vista 64 bit?

    Thanks
