Niice! I'm going for the scar 17 with 5900hx, so there should be plenty of extra room for cooling, I can't wait to get it now and flash that bios. Just that xoticpc has a eta of june for it :(. I like the SSD choices they offer and they'll put thermal pads on too, I've never opened a laptop before (while I used to build dozens of towers). So I'm a little nervous about going in there and doing those things myself.

Was really hoping we'd get some 5980hx already.

What kind of memory did you use? I bought CL16 its not shipped yet, but you had any lower timings if it set it to default CL22??

Oh, thats pretty nice. I was a bit worried when I saw Dave 2D's video on the Scar 15 showing CPU temps going up to 96C even with max fans. Can you please give an idea of what your room temperatures are like? It's getting a bit warm here in my country as summers are approaching, which will lead to slightly higher ambient temperatures, at around 26-27C, so want to rule that out.

Those are my timings, I believe it is the same as stock ram. No improvement there. The kit I have is a g.skill cl18 2x16gb (the machine does not like xmp apparently). So there is more performance to squeeze there... If only Asus allowed as much tuning as MSI. We should nag Asus to allow us to mess with memory timings on ryzen laptops. It is my only complaint so far with the laptop.

21-22. In summer it gets very hot inside my house too, reaching over 30c sometimes. I guess at that point the fans will be pushed to 100%.

As far as I know the only difference between the 17 and 15 is that the 17 has somewhat bigger pipes, but the motherboard appears to be the same. The 5900hx should also be hotter than the 5800h, so I would expect it to hit 90c. Nothing to worry about though. These temps are fine on laptops. Hell, I had a watercooled 5800x until recently and it was designed to boost as much as possible all the way to 90c, which it would hit fairly easily. Even if the 5900hx were to spike to 95c, it would still be within spec. The default fan curve may be too conservative, I don't know if there had been any changes with all of these bios updates.

Are there any performance gains in gaming? Or mains focus is to get highest score? :D

what about rendering an hour long 4k video with effects in premiere pro or after effects? Will this make big explosion or will we be ok :p

Actually, performance in game increased even more than in time spy. I don't play a lot of games and they are always online so, I haven't even tried cyberpunk or watch dogs, but in ow and apex legends it makes all the difference in the world, much higher lows and average fps. It basically went from "kind of disappointed compared to the msi ge76" to being neck to neck just by replacing the memory (and flashing the vbios, of course)

Well i tried today and for me in cyberpunk barely any difference, like 1 oe 2 fps in rdrd2 i had like 8 fps but temps were a but higher too. What paste did you use again for the gpu? Also btw i have the scar 15 with 5900hx and rtx3080 16 gb

I used noctua nt-h2 on the gpu.

On the second comment I wrote about this, but then I realised I had already answered. I gather you have a model that already came with a 2x16gb kit. Mine was 2x8gb. Also, what I have experienced is that the higher the resolution and graphic quality, and the more gpu bound the game, the lower the effect ram will have. So if you crank up the settings on cyberpunk, seeing barely any difference, if any, makes sense. On the other hand, games like overwatch at low settings 1080p felt like an upgrade to a next tier laptop. I basically went from being unable to dropping 20 frames below my refresh rate to averaging above the refresh rate. Also, I play on a external monitor (xg17, 240hz).

How much did Noctua NT-H2 improve temps on the GPU versus stock? GPU repasting hasn't been looked much into, at all. What are the max temps with and without repaste on the GPU? Would be really awesome if this works :)

It's hard to quantify, but before repasting it, it was throttling while running time spy on turbo setting. Keep in mind though that I am using the 150w vbios (disabled dynamic boost on device settings -> software devices -> nvidia platform controllers and framework).

Now it peaks at 83 with 21C room temp running time spy. If I set the fans at 100% it doesn't reach 80c. I feel like the cutouts in the bottom shell could be bigger, it feels like the fans are still starving to get more air in. I tried running the tests without the bottom cover and it average 69c with peak 76, so a good cooling base should also help.

I had to apply it twice cause the first time I made it worse, I tried spreading it evenly but it was too thin so the heatsink simply pushed it out and it was overheating. The second time I used a "pea sized" amount on the center and just let pressure spread it. In-game temps in overwatch stay between 68-72c with low settings. In apex mid 70s. I tried using the adaptive resolution setting in apex legends to force 100% utilization and it still gets pretty tosty, ~80-83 after couple of hours. depends on the room temperature. If I'm not mistaking it's simply upscaling the image, so it makes sense. The 130w vbios is easier on the temps and also stays withing spec of the device, so I'd flash that first.

Also, I have a hyperx 2660 cl15 1x16gb stick ( https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B01N7K4DV4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) I'd bought for my previous laptop so I ran some tests with this stick and a g.skill module ( https://www.gskill.com/product/2/19...IMMDDR4-3200MHz-CL18-18-18-1.20V32GB-(2x16GB). The bios automatically set the ram to 2660 cl15, following the xmp profile, not jedec ( edit: found the spreadsheet for the hyperx, and the jedec profile for 2666 is the same as the xmp, so no luck). So maybe there is hope that future bios updates will support newer memory. Despite the lower timings, lower frequency with ryzen cpus also limits the infinity frabic clock so I lost a bit of performance. https://www.3dmark.com/spy/19221908 This is the best result I got. I wish I could run the g.skill ram at cl18 since 3200 cl22 is almost equivalent to 2660 cl15, despite the lower infinity clock.

I saw you said you have the scar 15 5900hx 3080 16gb, but I thought all of those came with 3200 ram already. I don't own one yet because xoticpc doesn't have it in stock yet and I want it with the options they offer.

Mine is the lowest version with a 3080, 5800h 3080 8gb. If I said I have a 5900hx at some point, I apologize, it must have slipped. The 5900hx with 32gb DO come with 3200 cl22 ram, yes.

Put some liquid metal on the GPU now, will ask khenglish if those vrms can handle 155w continously, it seems the power supply can on both combined CPU and GPU loads with no issues, so that's a plus I guess...

Temps have gone down around 5c, was hovering between 83-84c at 155w now it sits at around 78c, this is with an unrealistic load (Furmark)

Also the liquid metal on the CPU side is NOT applied properly, it wasn't on my unit anyway, half the CPU was missing liquid metal lol. It seems they didn't rub it into the die or nickel plated heatsink hence the fans were always on even with no load... I used a cotton bud and massaged the liquid metal into the die and the heatsink. Temps have gone down another 5-6c...

Do you have any pics of the factory LM application on the CPU to share? Asus factory LM job needs scrutiny, as most customers aren't comfortable with LM. Also I'm afraid, as to whether or not the after sales service technicians possess the competency to apply LM reliably in case something goes wrong. Sharing the application pics on social media is definitely a step in the right direction, as that will wake Asus up and force them to improve their processes so that this doesn't happen again.

So now you have liquid metal on both gpu and cpu? And the temps on gpu are on max 78 degrees with the 155 w bios?

Man , those are great temps to be honest. So totally worth going up to 155w. I lack experience on applying liquid metal and a bit afraid to pull the trigger on this. Might wait for someone to do this for me. Also im curious if you have tested in any games that are gpu bound and see any improvment. Im afraid that we wont get much more , due to lack of mux switch

Thread is going up soon ;) but to give you an idea in furmark at 1080p default settings with the stock vbios I was getting a measly 150fps. When I flashed the GE76 155W VBIOS onto this beast it shot up to 195fps which is an insane performance increase :D

It really is near stock rtx 3070 level now which is what I was hoping for. Just need that 10w extra from the Clevo 165w vbios to get to that stage.

One thing I’ve realised from all of this is that ASUS really overdid it with the heatsink and VRM design, it’s just amazing how much more power you can get out of something so portable and light, it’s crazy...

Does Cyberpunk 2077 stutter really badly in certain areas for anyone else here? (Running at Ultra 1080p, High textures, DLSS and RTX off) I think it might be the single stick of RAM, any insight @SMGJohn @costalolstrax ?

I havnt come across this issue , but i have 32 gb ram 5900hx and the 16gb rtx 3080, but yes either ram or the fact that thr 8gb of vram on your 3080 might reach the limit in some areas like jig jig or cherry market

Also when i had the 155w vbios i only noticed 2 fps maybe extra in cyberpunk, that s why i decided to switch back to the original. Also maybe i did a mistake on not disabling dynamic boost as many said we should

Thank you for the insight @Andymih

I will try other games to see if it's cyberpunk playing up or the GPU... I think it is down to the single stick of RAM though, I flashed the original vbios and it was stuttering more/same lol so I flashed back to the GE76 Vbios. I'll get to the bottom of this eventually :D

I pulled the trigger and flashed the RTX 3080 GE76 vBIOS 155W one.
But I did not see anyone post any kind of comparison with before and then after so I guess I will do it myself.

    RTX 3080 GPU-z Info 155W vBIOS.PNG
The old vBIOS was 94.04.3E.00.56 and I flashed the GE76 vBIOS which is the 94.04.3F.00.4F
During my testing I also used a power metre, I saw on avg 180W being pulled with the 155W vBIOS to maximum 220W

    RTX 3080 power use.PNG
I am not sure how to read nVidia power usage or if its reported correctly, but to me it seems no different from the Asus stock 115W vBIOS power usage?? Maybe I am confused, this is the data after running both FireStrike and TimeSpy.

FireStrike (Notice how variable the CPU scores are duo to power priority)
    115W Asus vBIOS - Graphics Score = 31 246 | Physics Score = 26 061
    155W MSI vBIOS - Graphics Score = 32 809 | Physics Score = 25 762
    2080 Ti & R5600X - Graphics Score = 36 409 | Physics Score = 23 649

    TimeSpy
    115W Asus vBIOS - Graphics Score = 11 739 | CPU Score = 9 852
    155W MSI vBIOS - Graphics Score = 13 215 | CPU Score = 10 117
    GE76 Raider (3080) - Graphics Score = 13 116 | CPU Score = 9 892

    3DMark TimeSpy Detailed.jpg

Example of the 155W vBIOS TimeSpy run, notice how stable the core speeds are.

My Strix SCAR 15 G533QS specifications are following:
    Ryzen 9 5900HX
    RTX 3080 16GB
Samsung Stock 3200MT/s CL22 Dual rank, running dual channel.
    Asus Sys Specs.PNG

Single stick of ram on any Ryzen CPU is a monstrous bottleneck, you need minimum dual channel memory so its definitely your memory crippling your CPU, get those Kingston 3200MT/s CL20 memory sticks, they have JEDEC rating of 3200C20 so they will run at that speed because Asus has no XMP in the BIOS it just runs whatever JEDEC speed the memory is rated at.

It was the RAM, jesus christ 1 stick of RAM can really cripple a Ryzen 5800H. Who would have thought. I've gained like 10fps more too, and thats with a random 2666MHz CL19 Samsung sodimm I had laying around. Obviously the 3200MHz Samsung stick has matched it and I'm guessing the 2666MHz stick has matched the CL22 timing...

Also did you repaste your gpu? Temps are holding?

Could write a "how to" for flashing vbios? What are the cons with new bios, did you noticed anything strange? Also I'm curious - what will happen when MyAsus app will try to update BIOS once there will be a new version?

No I did not repaste anything, I have not touched the heatsink as I never found it to be a problem, for me its just normal working temperature, I am in fact amazed such a thin machine only gets 80~ metric degrees with a 155W GPU and 80W CPU running in tandem, to me thats saying something about the improvements in cooling technology.
I also had the laptop on a cooling pad, that alone probably gives it a 5 degree improvement.
Temps actually holds at 85 degrees on the GPU and CPU when under unrealistic stress testing with full fan speed.

And no I did not disable dynamic boost, I believe thats not possible with the RTX 30xx series Notebook GPU's or at least I did not find a way to because there is nothing like that in nVidia control panel.

This is amazing, I never heard of this type of memory before however, is it some Chinese rebranding scheme? I tried looking up the parts number but came back nothing, be interesting to find out the actual manufacturer of this memory and try to find it on AliExpress or something. But this is great, JEDEC at CL18, more than enough, big dream would be CL14 but a man can dream I guess.

The flashing process is simple its almost as easy as the AMD vBIOS flashing.
    1. Download latest version of nVidia NVFlash from techpowerups.
    2. Download the appropriate vBIOS you want to flash.
    3. Put your NVFlash into a folder in your C:\ drive like this C:\nvflash
    4. Take your downloaded new vBIOS and rename it to rtx3080.rom put it into the nvflash folder.
    5. Open your display manager and disable your nVidia GPU, make sure MUX is enabled so your iGPU can still function, if your nVidia GPU disappears, restart your PC and make sure its disabled.
    6. Open Command Prompt aka CMD, as administrator.
    7. Proceed to type in cd/ and then enter, then you type in cd/nvflash and hit enter again. Type lastly nvflash to start the program.
    8. Now you must backup your GPU vBIOS, type in nvflash -b rtx3080backup.rom and hit enter, then when its done make sure you check your folder to see if its there, its saved in your nvflash folder. (Alternatively you can use GPU-Z to make a backup, but I recommend both)
    9. Now finally, time to flash your GPU, type in following: nvflash -6 rtx3080.rom and hit enter, screen may flash or go to black, wait for it to be done.
    10. Once you have done all of this, restart your PC, and then re-enable your GPU in the device manager. Proceed to run a few light stress tests to confirm its working correctly, if not you may need to redo the entire process.
This is adaption of this older guide found here: https://www.overclockersclub.com/guides/how_to_flash_rtx_bios/

Please make sure you got NOTHING else running in the background to minimise failure, just restart your computer completely and then do the flashing method.

Thanks, now I need to prepare mentally ^^. BTW, how about my other two questions? Any cons you were able to observe? What do you think about future official BIOS updates from ASUS, safe or not safe? Should those with modded vBIOS flash back original before upgrade?

I need to test it more, one thing I noticed however its not a con but more like a bug fix, with the ASUS vBIOS my external monitors were annoyingly put to sleep permanently when I woke it up from hibernation having to unplug the USB-C cable each time or manually just switch it to the laptop screen before going to hibernation mode.

With the MSI vBIOS all of this is fixed LOL, it works as you expect, I turned off the laptop screen outputting only to my external ones when its plugged into the dock and its working fine, as for heat and performance I just need to play around with it more to see, I noticed I had to reduce my overclock however by 50MHz for it to be stable after flashing the vBIOS, small sacrifice however.

As for the updates, those you can easily just bypass, ASUS are not forcing firmware or BIOS updates on you, they are optional.

It s not a bug with monitors . You have the igpu set ON or set to auto in the gpus power saving tab in armoury crate under system

And dynamic boost can be disabled if you go in device manager , software and disable nvidia framework which includes dynamic boost resizable bar and whisper 2.0

It is a bug, it did not properly seem to remember the monitors, it could not handle the monitors resizing to a different resolution for older games this basically meant I had to re-seat the USB-C cable each time the game resized to a different resolution because the screen would go black and not wake up.
the iGPU Mode was always set to off in the armoury crate software.

I will try disabling the nVidia framework and run the TimeSpy test again to see if there is any difference.

I assume that MSI Afterburner still doesn't work after new vBIOS flash? I tired it on stock and it didn't - same with Precision X1...

I haven't had any problems with afterburner, but I also didn't have any problems using it with the stock vbios.

My bad, poor explanation. What I meant is that auto OC mode doesn't work. Voltage and fan sliders are grayed out. So there's no full control on stock.

That is not a vbios thing, you need to enable the control from the msi settings where you have the option to enable full control. And also evem if grayed out without enabling the full controll you still can adjust the voltage and frequency using the curve.

    Also found this:
Guys flashed GE66 VBIOS that has same 130W TDP, but were able to achieve 12600 GPU score. Stock is ~11600, so the gains are impressive.
And this is a killer result with 155W VBIOS - https://www.3dmark.com/spy/18893834

What do you guys think of this 3dMark Time Spy score? I've added a 16GB 3200MHz CL21 Stick of Samsung RAM along with the stock CL22 3200MHz RAM. Runs at 3200MHz by default...

Hey guys sorry for really late response, its eastern and I had stuff to do at work but I will answer these questions to my best knowledge, remember that I am all new to this as you are with this 155W vBIOS and I have not even begun overclocking also its hitting the limitations of the cooling system on this tiny little laptop and I expect that, after gaming stuff like Metro Exodus with ultra settings and ray tracing the GPU is reaching 90 degrees in the most demanding tasks when the CPU is also pushed to the limit because they share heatpipes that also means they share heat they produce to a degree.

I wanted to try overclocking next but we will see what my results can become.

Okay so I did disable nVidia Framework and I did a TimeSpy test several times just to confirm my result, I get a score of: Graphics Score - 12 586 | CPU Score 10 179
So thats a clear impact from Graphics Score - 13 215 with the Framework enabled. Its not worth it, it seems at least to me maybe a different workload it has a more impact?

Okay so I tried EVGA Precision X1 because I really do not like MSI AfterBurner all that much and yeah it works, you cannot control voltage however.

You can get the 155W vBIOS here: https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/229687/229687

    EDIT 01.04
    - Remove voltage claim, is not correct, voltage does not change even if you set a value.
