The poster tape is double sided and very thin. You can use regular double sided tape if you prefer. Some people have used the mounting tape (the thick stuff) to fill gaps under the keyboard. Typically, that is not what is causing the flex. What is causing the flex is the connection of the KB at the sides (clips) and no support in the middle. The center bows a bit (almost impreceptably) and moves with the keystrike until it bottoms out on the aluminum tray under the KB. Thin double-sided tape does not let the KB bounce back and eliminates that extra travel in the middle of the KB.

If you use the mounting tape, it has a foam core that will compress. I don't see how that can possibly eliminate the flex.

But if you use the thin poster double sided tape to have the keyboard's middle stick to the aluminum tray, doesn't that cause the keyboard to stay in a permanently warped position in its middle?

Isn't that bad for a keyboard in the long run? Thanks.

Answering my own question, I found a shop which ships to Greece at a hefty 37 pounds charge, Lambda-tek ( http://www.lambda-tek.com/). Has anyone heard of them or bought from them? Any feedback whatsoever would be appreciated :)

You would have to look at the way the Asus KB is made but the Acer is made to sit on the tray. It makes it perfectly flat when you do this.

And takes all the flex out of the KB and it does not make it concave.

@Quatro I use the poster tape because it sticks a bit less than the regular double sided. I have also changed from using many-multi strips to 1 in the center to make it easier to remove the KB. It can make it a pain to do. Good to see ya again.

    You too.

Yea, I used poster double-sided tape on a job recently, and it's pretty light tack. Should work great. A very creative idea!

Give this guy some rep points!!

I am blessed that my keyboard only had a small amount of bounce when I got it and removing the keyboard and slight bending removed the slight warped fit. But not all were so lucky.

It has been whisper quiet on mine. I don't hear it when I'm surfing in battery saving mode or when I'm playing StarCraft 2 in performance mode.

All quiet on this front before the launch! Words through grapevine are that the U35jc will be available/shipping(?) out on 8/18/2010 in the States. Let us know if you've heard differently.

I've got the same dilemma before, I'm about to place my order for UL30VT but I'm not sure if the ULV is enough, then I saw U35JC but i can't find any store that has it. I really wanted a 13" laptop but I ordered U45JC instead, 13" and 14" really don't have much difference in size.

I ordered my U45JC yesterday, but I have to wait 10days before it gets here. I really want the 13" but i can't find any store that has it in stock. So I get U45JC instead. There's really not much of a difference in size between 13" and 14" imo.

You're main differences are going to be in weight, internal DVD drive, and sometimes graphics card options.

No store in the USA has the U35jc yet. ETA either 8/18/10 or 8/28/10 (not sure which date).

You're wise to go with the non-ULV chip option, especially since ASUS laptops have Optimus switchable graphics with Nvidia GPUs.

Although, the Acer 3280TG also has switchable graphics with its ATI graphics card.

By the same logic, 15.6" isn't much of a difference compared to 14" and by the transitive property, 13" isn't much of a difference compared to 15.6", which is definitely not true :p
You may be right, but for me 13.3" hits the sweet spot of both good usability and good portability. I would wait for the 13.3" if I were you, unless you really need an optical drive.

    I really don't need a built-in optical drive but I really need a computer ASAP.. :p
So, U45JC is a go for me.

I agree that 13" has the best of both worlds, but there is no specific date on when the U35 or U33 will be available :( .

Congrats, Ricardo. Just curious... Where did you make the purchase? How much did you pay for your U45jc? Did you check how much they are selling the U35jc for?

In case you care to know, I got my U35jc at Guanghua about two weeks ago for NT$30500. It looks like we pay a bit of a premium for getting it early here in Taiwan.

Let me know what your experiences are with Super Hybrid Engine vis-a-vis performance and battery life. Thanks! :)

BTW, the Optimus sticker left a lighter-colored rectangle on the palm rest. I should have removed it sooner, but the Asus salesperson told me to keep all the stickers on for at least 10 days, so I could return the whole package.

If you plan to, peel the stickers off as soon as you can. I'm not sure if the color of my palm rest will even out soon.

Could any of the new owners comment in regards to the build quality. Do you feel any flex or creaking? Additionally, how is the system in terms of fingerprints, do the palm rests and lid pick up a lot of fingerprints and smudges? Pictures are worth a thousand words :). Thanks!

J&R told me to call back next week to see if they have received an ETA by then. They also told me that changing the shipping location will put me at the back of the line! So if this laptop ships after the 24th, I'm SOL. Their generosity in giving me free shipping (it was originally $15) will be nullified by the fact that it will cost about $10 to ship it from my house to its final destination :(

    Hey Anarkigr,

I haven't personally used Lambda-tek for any purchases but here is a link to a review website where people who have had dealings with companies can write reviews about their experiences and rate them. This is the link to all the reviews people have posted about lambda-tek: LambdaTek www.lambda-tek.com Reviews | Online Computer Shops | Review Centre Lambda-tek gets nearly all 5 star ratings and the majority of the reviews are very positive. Check it out. I hope it helps in your decision making process.

I actually saw the U35JC in a store in London today. Couldn't play with it because they had it locked inside a glass case for some weird reason. All the other laptops were laid out to play with. But boy does it look like a fine machine in real life! Super sleek and looks really light. The screen was really bright with vibrant colours. If I didn't have my heart set on the U33JC I'd buy the U35JC in a heartbeat!

@Borsikov: Awesome piccy's mate! I'm sure you've made a lot of people green with envy ;)

After speaking with Ken he has put up a thermal compound upgrade option for the U35JC. You guys think it would be worth it to get arctic silver 5 or IC diamond? Although I don't hear of anyone really complaining about the U35JC's heat.

The U45 is a bit bigger and heftier as it is a 14-incher and has a DVD writer. You should ask yourself:

Do I prefer the slightly wider screen?
    Do I need a CD/DVD drive?
Do I mind the extra weight?

    My personal answers...

    • I would just hook up to an external monitor if I want screen real estate. Anything larger than a 13.x-inch screen is not mobile enough for me.
    • I rarely use CDs or DVDs. If I need to use one (to create a Windows restore DVD, for example), I use my external USB DVD writer. I'm lucky I have one, but if I didn't I would probably purchase or borrow one instead of getting a heavier laptop. An internal optical drive also adds a few other points of failure (my opinion).
    • Yes, the lighter the laptop the better for me.

    Fingerprints
    • Palmrest - acceptable; not too obvious, easy to wipe off
    • Lid - horrible; very obvious, hard to wipe off
    • LCD Bezel - bad on the glossy surface, but I rarely touch the bezel

    Build Quality
Nowhere near Thinkpad quality, but I think quality is good. Palmrest plastic looks good and very effective at staying cool, but nevertheless is very plasticky.

Bottom part looks solid and is solid to the touch, but plastic is very mediocre. But, unlike my wife's Viao CR-23, rubber pads look like they are very good quality and (like the Thinkpads) will stay in place forever. Battery is not loose at all.

No flexing or creaking, but certain parts of the keyboard can be mushy. Minimal LCD flex is acceptable. Opening and closing lid by pinching just the tip isn't scary at all.

LCD is very bright, but viewing angle is very limited (like most laptops). Colors not too accurate and will need some software tweaking.

    Design
Simple bare design is actually attractive with lid open. Cross-hatch on palm rest and seemless touchpad helps a lot. With the lid closed, it's really quite boring. Brushed black aluminum does nothing for me, plus the fingerprints do not help. At least the metal provides some protection and rigidity.

Will post photos this weekend. :)

FWIW, I had to change my shipping address (lost the BCB ) but they assured me there were only 26 people in line out of 70 they have on order. Granted this was on Wednesday, but I can't imagine it's grown that much since then

Changing shipping address loses BCB? I'll pay the $10-15 that it takes to ship the damn thing from my house to my school, in that case! I'm sorry that you lost $40...you should see if BCB customer service can help you get it back.
