@damian5000 - I downloaded 3dmark06 but couldn't get it to run? It was asking for a directx file relating to something like dx9??? I'm pretty sure my lappy runs dx11. Any tips?

3DMark06 is weird like that sometimes.

I actually couldn't get it to work on one of my laptops until I did a fresh Windows OS reinstall. Then it worked.

Not sure if it has been posted but the U35F - X1 is up on amazon for purchase (not pre-order).

Personally I am going to sit on it for a while and hope for the u35jc

I just noticed a very faint but audible enough to be annoying whine from the CPU or capacitors when the processor is idle. Does anyone else hear this noise? My solution so far has been to keep foobar2000 playing music in the background on pause which stops the whine while keeping the CPU pegged at 2%.

I'm going to give Asus a ring soon; this is super annoying and I hope it's a defective unit or bad batch of caps and not a design problem. I would assume it's the former as I haven't read people complaining about this with the U45s as of yet.

I certainly hope your cpu isn't making any noise! It might be that infamous hard drive whine that plagues many UL series notebooks. Poke around the forums for the thread about how to fix that.

No such noise on my U35jc. Stupid question, but is this hum coming from the laptop itself or internal/external speakers?

Guys, I just spent several hours creating Asus recovery disks and trying the recovery mechanism. I was hoping to find an option that will let me perform a clean install of Windows 7.

Is there a way to do a clean install with having to purchase a new Win7 license?

DUDE!!! What's going on here? Im confused! I thought you had given up on the U35 and already gone out and bought the R705???

Believe me when I say, you do NOT want the Acer 3820TG. They are a filthy, horrible, nasty piece of work! The build quality is way below par. The keyboard design is all form and absolutely NO function. The flex in the screen/lid is fightening! The whole thing reminds me of a polished turd! And everyone knows its pointless polishing a turd :p If you are um-ing and are-ing over this and the R705... don't! It's like comparing a Hyundai with an Audi. Everytime I think about the day I had a play with that Acer in a store here in London a little bit of bile comes up into the back of my throat!

Just my opinion though. A strong one I admit... maybe even a little over the top! But it's just my opinion, I'm sure others may see it differently :)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Acer. No confusion - I did exactly what you thought.

But I also then decided to buy the Acer. I'll have to decide which to keep. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.

Acers are a little like Hyundai's. Both used to have serious design flaws and build quality issues. But somewhere along the way, management got serious about addressing these issues. Now, both companies have made considerable headway in their progress. While they're both not at the top of their respective leagues, they've definitely worked hard to improve their offerings to a competitive level.

The Acer 3820TG is no HP Envy or Sony Vaio Z. But it offers a very comparable combination of components (CPU, GPU) at a lower price point. This results in a very attractive value proposition (much like Hyundai and its cars).

With that being said, I think the Toshiba R705 also offers tremendous value as well, just in a different way.

My plan is to drive to BestBuy and see the R705 in person, right after I receive the R705 delivery. If I like what I see, I'll sell the Acer 3820TG on eBay or here (there's bound to be many interested buyers who were afraid of ordering on a international website, and now they don't have to worry). If I don't like what I see, I'll just return the R705 while I'm there at BestBuy.

It's good to always have options in life....

I got mine at the Zhong Li Nova Store for 32500 with a upgrade to 4 Gigs of RAM and a free 10 foot ethernet cable. I don't remember what they were selling the U35JC for, I think it might have been around 30000 as well but definitely not sure about that.

Eeesh! Sorry about that! Really put my foot in it there :-$ I didn't realise that you already had the Acer. You make a good point about the improved build qaulity if Hyundai's. Yes they have improved and yes they are aiming at a different buyer/market segment than Audi. Likewise Acer, but I still think there is a substantial difference between Acer and it's closest rival on value for money, Asus.

Anyway, I'll be looking forward to hearing your verdict once you've had time to compare the two :)

No need to apologize! I welcome all opinions, especially those that aren't the same as mine. Gives me food for thought, so to speak.

I don't have the Acer yet, or the Toshiba for that matter. They're both coming to me as we speak and should arrive middle of next week.

The R705 holds the key. If I'm impressed enough with it, then the Acer goes for sale. Even if I were to open the box to look at the Acer, I'm confident I'd get my money back by selling it. There's enough of demand for it here in the USA.

I'll have to evaluate the R705 at BestBuy without opening the box of MY R705. If I open it, but decide to return it, I'm on the hook for $130 restocking fee.

I agree that Acer has a ways to go to rival Asus. However, I think Acer made a very smart, aggressive move by putting a mid to high range GPU (ATI 5650) in a thin and light laptop (3.9 lbs) to complement the integrated Intel GMA HD GPU, removing the DVD drive, and putting in a 2nd fan. This dual fan cooling system (one for CPU and GPU) makes this laptop a powerful, yet very cool, system.

To date, ASUS best response is the U35jc, but as we've discussed before, its GPU (Nvidia 310M) is very anemic for games and such.

With moves like these, Acer will eventually catch up and overtake ASUS if ASUS isn't too careful about designing conservative laptops like the U35jc.

Ok managed to get 3dmark to run (very slow and choppy!) This was with all settings at default, should i re-run at the native res?

Those results are in line with what the GPU is capable of (not very much).

Why bother re-running it in native res, when everyone runs at default res to get an apples-to-apples comparison? You've already got your answer on the benchmark.

Yup, it's scoring right around where it should.

See this thread...Looks like it worked for the U30JC, so perhaps very similar with U35JC can be expected. He got a 20% increase and stayed stable.

Didn't you technically purchase a windows 7 license with your laptop (the sticker/key on the bottom)? Logic tells me that as long as you're installing the same version (Home Premium/professional/ultimate 32bit/64bit), you should be able to use the same key.

    ...right?

can anyone vouch for the u35jc's trackpad? Sensitivity and accuracy of a trackpad is kind of a deal breaker for me.
Does the accuracy/sensitivity match that of the MBP's trackpad?

possible that someone can do a video review?

That's uncommon with the ASUS laptops I've examined.

Be sure BOTH latches are closed on the battery. One is for locking and shows red when it is unlocked and the other is for releasing the battery. The release switch is spring loaded so it always goes back to the same position, but the locking slide switch is not spring loaded. It stays wherever you switch it to. Be sure BOTH are slide in toward the middle of the notebook.

Keep in mind that the U30Jc's 310M generally scores 3700 in 3DMark06, not 3400 as the latest ASUS's are. This appears to be due to ASUS using cheaper, slower-clocked DDR3 for the GPU's VRAM. So that RAM is probably more limited in its overclockability.

Also, the U30Jc is thicker than the U35Jc and that might help in cooling the GPU & laptop.

But the 310M is definitely overclockable, I'm just not sure of the limits on the U35Jc.

I'd suspect it will be like the results that Brandon got over at Expert Laptop Review HERE with his UL30Vt.

His UL30/80Vt's 210M was stock-clocked very close to the U35Jc's 310M. His base 3DMark06 score was 3400 like the U35Jc's.

    Here's what he says:

    "The stock clocks were:

    Core clock: 606
    Memory clock: 790
    Shader clock: 1468

The final stable clocks I got were:

    Core clock: 750
    Memory clock: 935
    Shader clock: 1655

Stock Clocks 3DMark06 Score: 3461 points
Overclocked Final 3DMark06 Score: 3949 points
Overclocked Improvement: 488 points or 14%

There was a significant performance gain by overclocking the UL80VT as was demostrated by an increase of 488 points, but how did the overclocked card fare when compared in real life gaming tests?"

But my U30Jc's 310M stock speeds were higher than his or the U35Jc:
    Core: 625
    Memory: 790
    Shaders: 1530
    3DMk06: 3730

Increasing them little by little, I arrived stably at a 16% increase of:
    Core:764
    Memory: 921
    Shaders: 1721
    3DMk06: 4330

The U35Jc's stock GPU clocks (and I think the U35Jc) are:
    Core clock: 606
Memory clock: 667 (even lower than the UL30Vt's 790 MHz)
    Shader clock: 1468

So I think the U35Jc's 310M, which is clocked about the same and the notebook is about the same thickness as the UL30Vt, should be capable of about the same overclock on the GPU & VRAM.

You CAN get the U35 in the states in black, it's just not the U35Jc, but the U35F. Only difference other than color is that the U35Jc has discrete graphics and the U35F does not.

Google's Chrome OS is something made mainly for Netbooks by Google. It looks and feels like the browser but instead you can install apps and other stuff. You could even call it Google Chrome on Steroids. A demo can be found below:

I wouldn't install a whole new OS just to improve boot time...I come from a technology board where the default response to this sort of question is met with a sarcastic "INSTALL GENTOO" :p

Run msconfig and look at what is running at startup. Disable the processes that you are positive that you don't need. Then, go into control panel and uninstall all the programs that, again, you are positive that you don't need. Removing bloatware/unnecessary processes can do wonders for bootup time!

I agree with you for those who are not of the faint of heart.

But for those who are technically proficient, a clean install really flushes out files and folders that are still left behind after manually removing bloatware.

Just be careful not to delete the recovery partition if you choose to sell the laptop within a short period of time of receiving it. Most people don't know how to install the "blank" Windows 7 OS software and then activate it with the key code. The recovery partition process spares them from having to do that.

i hope this isnt turning the topic into a Chrome OS topic...

Anyways anyone owners of the u35/45 can give some personal opinions / mini reviews? Lots of people are prospective future buyers and would like some input (me personally i would like input on the touchpad sensitivity and accuracy)
