I'm really glad this whole topic came up. I'm basically sold on the U45 now. I'm also curious if the R705 is as feather light as it's made out to be. I have held it in BB but without the battery. Feels pretty airy.

I would guess that's the weight with the 6 cell battery (if such a thing exists).

If 8 cells = 1 pound each cell would be about .125 pounds, so a 6 cell battery would be .75 pounds... right? And the laptop, with 6 cell battery, would be right around 3.75 pounds?

I just realized that when i weighed it using the method i described earlier...that was AFTER i had changed the stock hard drive out with the momentus xt 7200...maybe that hard drive added 0.1-0.3lbs possibly and thats why my method resulted in 4.4lbs as opposed to Ken's 4lbs? no idea.
anyway glad Ken was able to get an accurate measurement for us...thanks Ken!

I'm going with Chanda Bear on this one. I just need to get the results of my exam (coming before Sept. 5) and if I get around 93+ there is around an 80% chance that I'll go for the U45Jc from JR. The reviews seem to be good, especially the one from Amazon, and I'll appreciate the screen real estate at a cheaper price. Getting it with a Case Logic sleeve and maybe a Logitech M505. Do any U45/U35 owners think they need a mouse, or is the trackpad good enough to not need a mouse?

I am considering of getting the U35JC from a different site. I could get 2 day shipping on it right now for an extra $20 than my current preorder at JR.com. I am trying to decide if I should wait it out with JR and hope they get it tomorrow or Monday or just spend the extra $20 and get it elsewhere. It would likely ship tomorrow and I would get it Tuesday.

Trying to decide if its worth the $20 to get it tomorrow at the risk of JR having it tomorrow and I would end up spending $20 for nothing.

What do you guys think? Bite the bullet and spend an extra $20 to get it elsewhere and have it by Tuesday or play the waiting game with J&R and hope they get it tomorrow? I called them RIGHT before they closed and its still "End of August ETA".

I have two questions for U45 owners:
    - Is the keyboard plate sliver or black?
    - Is the "Enter" key a single row or two?

And a single one for U35 owners:
    - Is the "Enter" key single row or two?

The reason I ask is because there are a ton of pictures online that depict the U45 with a black keyboard plate, but in GenTechPC's Video Overview (can be found on YouTube) the keyboard plate is indeed silver. The second is that I have grown very accustomed to single-row enter keys and have never tried a double row enter key.

Single Row "Enter" Key (U45): ASUS U45JC-A1
    Black Keyboard Plate: ASUS U45JC-A1
    Silver Keyboard Plate: Asus U35JC-A1 13.3/Core i3-370M/NV G310M 1GB GDDR3/4GB DDR3/500GB/Win7HP64/Silver/ ETA 08/30/2010: GenTech PC Store

I bit the bullet and ordered the U35JC over from Buy.com. I am going to give my parents $20 to cover the cost difference from JR.com. I just can't wait anymore and am sick of looking at JR.com with the "Coming Soon" tag. I also can't stand how they can't even give me an up to date ETA.

Amazon said Buy.com had 2 left so hopefully I got one of them. If so, it should be coming on Tuesday with 2 day shipping. :)

They can't be that close in weight. There should be at least 1/2 lb or more difference as it was between the UL30Vt and UL80Vt.

The U45Jc has a DVD drive and is thicker, so it will weigh more than the U35Jc.

At last! Finally! I would have ditched J&R days ago especially with a not-clear ETA. Amazon still shows "2 left" so I hope that amount of stock at Buy.com is accurate. At least Amazon (sort of) stands behind its sales.

Buy.com itself at 10 pm CST show the U35 to be "in stock", so you should be good to go!

We look forward to hearing how it is when you get it.

I agree, the R705 is incredibly light and has great build quality. Played around with one in-store and it's a fantastic machine. So sad they don't offer it with discrete graphics, otherwise it would be perfect.

I am kind of nervous of cancelling my pre-order at JR.com JUST in case I didn't order in time. I tried to call Buy.com, but I couldn't find a number anywhere.

J&R let me put the pre-order on hold while I sorted out the whole cashback thing last week. Maybe you can do that until you get confirmation from Buy.com?

It now says out of stock on buy.com. I placed my order ALMOST 2 HOURS AGO. I found the phone number and gave them a call. The guy on the phone is telling me that I didn't place it in time and I won't be getting one out of previously available inventory. :|

So frustrating. Back to waiting on JR.com I guess.

J&R still has it in stock for $799. If you call in and order over the phone, they might knock the price down $10-20 for you. I just told the guy on the phone that I was planning on buying from them, but through Amazon, but he wouldn't have that! So I did some quick math while on the phone

    U35JC for $799
    -$40 Bing
    =$760
    +$33 to ship to Ohio
    =$793, all things considered

Since I got the U45JC for $782.99, I saved myself money (especially since I was planning on buying an external optical drive anyway) and a lot of headaches.

I don't understand. If you'd placed your order online via Amazon or Buy.com, that should have fixed your order. Why would you phone them?

Amazon now shows two more in stock (12 am CST, Thu night/Fri am) via Mobile Advance. Keep watching Amazon as I said earlier. They will either find more stock or find other sellers that have them.

If you order via Amazon's 3rd party, they will let you know fairly quickly whether that item is still really in stock or not. Once your order is confirmed as available, then you can cancel J&R.

It feels like you're making this harder than you need to.

The video is accurate and it's the actual laptop looks like. the pictures you saw on the web is provided by Asus marketing team from overseas, sometimes they provide wrong pictures.

G53JW for example, they mixed both G73JW and G53JW together.

Latest drivers from nvidia are 258.96 which cause my U35JC to hang at login. I have since changed my hard disk to a momentus xt and with these drivers can now make it to the desktop before it crashs... :(

Currently running 257.41 without a problem. Will have to wait for nvidia to issue a newer version that fixes those issues.

Well I am glad I did call them. If I assumed I would be getting it I would be screwed with a cancelled J&R pre-order. I just wanted to be 100% sure I would be getting one out of their inventory before I cancelled from J&R.

Oh, I see. You placed your order via Amazon (for Buy.com) and then phoned Buy.com to see if they had your order listed (before canceling your J&R order).

I wonder what would have happened had you placed your order online directly on Buy.com instead of Amazon and then called Buy.com to see if they showed your order?

How long was it between your Amazon order and phoning Buy.com? The process can take numerous hours if it is a 3rd-party seller on Amazon (which Buy.com would be.)

Yes, but the 3820TG is 4 lbs (1.81 kg) while the Tosh R705 is 3.2 lbs. I think he was referring to wanting the R705 (that weight) but with discrete graphics. (Never fear, yours is still a pretty awesome notebook!)

BTW, I'm removing BatteryBar. I like the interface at the bottom. Easier that BatteryMon. Both give me the discharge rate in mW. But BatteryBar continues to be very irratic in it's battery life estimate ... and generally wrong. So I'm chucking it and keeping with Battery Mon.

I played with the R705 at BestBuy for over an hour. It's really light, but built like a cheap plastic toy. Fisher-price like to be exact.

Wrote up a detailed comparison review on the R705 here: Part 4: Decision Time http://forum.notebookreview.com/6611250-post3560.html

The BatteryBar battery life estimate is real time. It's calculated off of whatever the current discharge rate happens to be. That's why it fluctuates.

How does Battery Mon calculate it's battery life estimate?

BatteryMon is also on-the-fly in real-time. But I'm finding BatteryBar continuing to do a weird thing where it continues to estimate my battery life at as low as 2.5 hrs-4.5 hrs even when my battery is using a mere 8,500mW ... it isn't raising the estimate over a period of my waiting & watching. Whereas Windows battery/power meter and BatteryMon show the life to be closer to 7-8 hrs. That's a huge difference.

I've even taken to uninstalling it and reinstalling it ... but the estimated battery life stays low.

The only way that worked for me with BatteryBar was to use it on battery for an hour or more, it seemed to finally "catch up" and reset the battery estimate to be closer to the other two.

Very odd to me. Too bad as I really like BB's taskbar appearance and pop-up summary.

BatteryBar develops a historical profile on your battery over a period of time (the more you go from 100% charge to 5% charge, the shorter the time it takes to develop this profile). Until this profile is fully developed, BatteryBar estimates your battery life. In both cases, BatteryBar incorporates real time info, but the estimate is much less indicative of real battery life (as you've seen). After about 2 weeks of using BatteryBar, I've found my battery life estimate to be accurate. But the first 2 weeks had some wild fluctuations.

    LOL!

Like I wrote in the review, it is more of a "first impressions" review as opposed to an in depth, "take it home and benchmark the CPU and GPU" review.

It's not a bad laptop. I think it's perfect for journalists, lawyers, hard-core travelers, etc.

For students, they'll probably be better served finding a laptop with a dedicated GPU (Optimus or not). If they plan on gaming, the more powerful the dedicated GPU, the better.

And for what it's worth, the R705 owners who read my review said it was spot on!

PS: remember to contact Jeff Bezos if you have any problems with your ASUS laptop. I'm sure he'd be glad to help out with BIOS rewrites and the like. LOL!

it's been listed quite in detail already for things that are so simple.

u45 is heavier and has an ODD and more screen
u35 is lighter, doesn't have an ODD and has a smaller screen.

I just got my U35JC from Amazon. Took out all the clear stickers, protectional tapes (except the one on the battery whose removal would void the warranty), and clear protectors, but left on the informational stickers. Put in the 9-cell battery. No other changes. It weighs just slightly over 4 lbs on my kitchen scale (about 4 lb, 0.7 oz).

Without the informational stickers, it's probably almost exactly 4 lbs. With a 6-cell battery instead of a 9-cell, the total weight would probably be 3.7-3.75 lbs.

Edit: It's actually an 8-cell battery.

I just placed my Pre-Order with Gentech, so I guess looking at a review at this point is somewhat moot. But I am with Yogesh, need some reviews up on this thread!

Which informational stickers did you leave? The massive one showing the model number and such to the right of the trackpad? I am thinking of taking off ALL the stickers (Even Windows 7/Intel) except for the battery sticker. Most of all the other stickers are completely useless and just make the laptop look cluttered IMO.

That's very nice of you to say! Thank you!

I'm not finished yet! There are more parts to come! Eventually, I'll get around to consolidating it into 1 thread.
