hey guys... just wondering if anyone is using a keyboard protector like komazy's silicone cover for the ul30vt ( found here http://asus-ul30.wikispaces.com/UL30+Accessories). I bought one for my sister's laptop and am looking to buy 1 for my incoming U35jc. Are the keyboard dimensions of the U35jc the same as any recently released Asus models? Thanks!

How do you pronounce "ASUS"?
Is it "A-SIS"? Or "A-ZEUS"?
I just heard it pronounced "A-ZEUS" on a Windows 7 commercial. -
I hear you! I hate seeing all these other retailers get it in and J&R still has no clue when they will get them in. I am too nervous to change orders now as I am in the first batch from J&R. I really hope they get it soon.
-
I used to live in Manhattan. We would go to J&R Music World for stuff, until Towers Records stole their business away.
We would NEVER go to J&R ComputerWorld. Their sales staff new nothing. -
Definitely with you here. If there's one thing companies in this day and age should learn is that it's important to keep lines of communication open between them and the customer. Information (even if it's not "you can expect the laptop tomorrow") is super important in order to keep your customers happy/satisfied.
That being said, I've ordered from J&R numerous times before and never had a problem. Then again, this is the first time I'm ordering something that hadn't been released yet.
J&R...throw us a bone! -
A-SEUSS. source: my cousin works there.
-
Thanks! If anyone would know definitively, it would be an employee!
-
For what it's worth, those of us who bought the 3820TG just figured out how to get a 1 year warranty for it after all.
I'm sharing this here only because I know some were concerned about buying a laptop without a warranty. -
To anybody who wants a U35Jc, ExcaliberPC has them IN STOCK here: ASUS U35JC-A1 13.3" Notebook - Silver. ASUS U35JC-A1
-
Too late, ordered it from Jeffrey Preston "Jeff" Bezos at Amazon.com, with $4 overnight shipping and avoiding $80 in sales tax.
-
LOL! Good luck getting Jeff Bezos to help you when your ASUS laptop needs help!
At least I know Ken is always there and has helped out lots in the past. Haven't seen Jeff post on here recently, if ever at all..... -
I am on the fence about to pull the trigger on a U45 from Xotic PC. I just wanted to to know if I can use this for light gaming once in awhile with games such as Half Life 2. Also, is this a relatively problem free computer? I have scanned this forum as well as others and it seems to be trouble free for the most part.
Thanks!! -
Hopefully it is trouble-free, but you might have heard little because it is, for the most part, still non-existent for a lot of people.
Yes, it will play HL2 & HL2:E2 very easily with settings maxed out. I have the U30Jc w/ a i3-350M (2.26GHz) and the 310M and that's how I play HL2:E2. -
Thanks! so much!

Amazon has the U35JC back in stock, and they are eligible for Prime! And I can get it by Friday for $805 shipped (I apparently have some unused gift card credit)!
If J&R can pull a Hail Mary and receive stock/ship it out by tomorrow afternoon, I'll stick with them. Otherwise I'll probably eat the $20 difference and order it from Amazon. -
Jeff Bezos from Amazon.com is fantastic! If you order from anywhere else you're giving up a lifetime of free backrubs from Jeff himself
(okay i'll stop trolling) -
Couldn't stand it any longer. Just ordered the U35JC from Jeff Bezos for $823.53. Also ordered an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD (60GB) at the same time for $155 instead of an Intel SSD.
Free shipping with Amazon Prime, extra $3.99/item for 1-day shipping, and no taxes.
Also ordered the Case Logic 13" case. Still thinking about which mouse to get.
Re: U35JC:
"Only 3 left in stock--order soon (more on the way)." -

"Only 1 left in stock--order soon." -
Not from Amazon unfortunately which is sold out
. I wish I was up last night and saw it. Come on J&R!
-
HOLY COW, J&R HAS THE U45JC FOR $799.
That is a killer price. I think I might get that and go with one of those 3% cashback sites. This way I can have it shipped straight to school! -
I'm just trying them for the first time, but Dealdigs.com offers 5% cashback.
-
Too late, already ordered =/
The guy on the phone knocked the price down to $782 for me, with free shipping, so I'm happy that I'll finally be getting a frickin' laptop after all this waiting!
That fatwallet place I was looking at said it took between 3-4 months for cashback to be ready...I'd much rather save $20 now than $40 four months from now. -
OMG. This price is so good!!!! I wanna take it now!!!
-
Wow, that's very impressive. The only way it could get any better is if it actually weighed the 3.74 pounds advertised on J&R's website. Gentech shows it at 4.63 lbs.
Now I know where my student loan excess is going!
Now is definitely the time to jump on the 14" Asus models. We'll say sub $800 for the U45jc and now Amazon has the UL80vt for $689, oddly enough, also shipped from J&R. -
Curious... why did he knock the price down for you? Was it cause you'd been waiting on the u35jc?
-
Still nothing besides "The end of August" from J&R. This waiting sucks! I wish I was up last night to get it on Amazon. I could have had it tomorrow with prime 1 day shipping. >_<
-
got my u35jc-a1 from gentech yesterday (they drop shipped it directly from Asus for me since I didn't order any customizations..I live in California and thats where they ship from so it came in one day after they shipped it via fedex)
loving it so far...
with the battery in, the laptop does feel closer to ~4.6lbs than 3.78...the battery is pretty heavy, at least 1lb by itself I would guess. (I'm just guessing because my netbook ways 3.2lbs and feels WAYY lighter than this laptop, but this laptop feels a bit lighter than my previous 6.2lb laptop...so it could very well be 4lbs but it feels like about 4 and a half pounds, i'll have to find a scale somewhere to get the exact weight)
But the laptop runs great! I changed the drive to a seagate momentus xt 500gb 7200rpm drive and things are quite a bit more zippy...
I did notice the high pitch noise some people mention only if i put the battery mode on battery saving...but in entertainment mode and high performance i did not hear the high pitch noise at all..
This thing is beautiful! -
Do you have a scale to weigh the laptop with? I'm curious to see what the 'real' weight is compared to what's listed on Asus's and retailer's websites.
-
well i didnt have a small scale but i have a digital scale that is for people to weigh themselves on (you know like those $20-$30 ones you can get from target or walmart). this is the only method i could think of to determine the approx weight of the laptop....this scale is very accurate and calibrates itself before every weighing. So lol what I did was weigh myself first while not holding only the laptop in my hands and then weighing myself again afterwards while carrying only the laptop in my hands and the difference in weight was 4.4lbs, so the laptop should weigh just about 4.4lbs accordingly to this scale method...im guessing the actual weight of the laptop is about 4.4lbs + or - 0.1lbs
sorry i know its not exactly what you wanted in terms of weighing the laptop but its better than nothing
on a side note, i tried putting just the laptop itself on this same scale but i guess it was too light to register anything on this scale since it's designed to weigh humans... -
LOL! That would all depend on the daily compounded interest rate, when applied to your present valuing the cashflow (in this particular case, a bullet payment in 4 months time).
I am a banker after all! -
Yeah most bathroom scales don't read anything below 15-20lbs. Thanks for the try but you definitely made a good point, if the U35jc is in actuality the same weight (or very close to) the u45jc, then there's really no reason to go with the 13" model..IMHO. Yeah you get maybe 1.5 hours more battery life but that's not absolute, I'd prefer the larger screen for the same weight and now that the U45 is under $800, seems like this becoming an easier decision.
Has anyone with a U35jc or U45jc weighed their laptop with the battery in it? What readings did you get? Gentech reports in their U45jc review video that it's 4.4lbs.
Current mood: hooked on silver! Let's see how long this lasts before I go back to complaining about the plastic palm rest!
-
LOL! But what would your parents have said?
-
yeah but...has anyone made a weigh-in on the u45jc? maybe the u45jc is pretty heavy as well (heavier than spec'd).
-
Archimedes himself would be proud of you. That's what he did roughly to measure the mass of objects. He would place objects in a full tub of water. Whatever water was displaced would be the mass of the object.
It's good to know that I didn't wait of a laptop that weighs more than what it was advertised to be (3.75 lbs).
It's still a very good laptop, but not as light as I wanted my laptop to be. -
Ninja edit! The U45jc according to Gentech is 4.4lbs. Definitely tolerable weight.
-
why is it that people posted the weight of the U35JC as under 4 lbs earlier in this thread? With pictures of it on the scale included. This is very confusing.
-
I find it hard to believe the U35JC is 4.4lbs like the U45JC. There were reviews that weighed the U35JC at exactly 4.0 lbs with battery. 4.4lbs is disappointing if the U45JC is the same weight. :\
-
i would trust the reviews over my measurements since the reviewers used the proper type of scale to measure accurate weight of the device.
-
That's just my problem with the reviews though, I don't think many actually do weigh it. They just go off of the retailer or the manufacturer's supplied info which, much like factory battery life specs, is not very accurate.
A digital bathroom scale should measure to the nearest tenth of a pound. There's nothing wrong with the method you used, the scale will definitely record the .67 pound difference of 3.73 vs 4.4. If you wanted to go all out Mythbusters, you could have taken the measurements 3 or 5 times. The weight is surprising but rather insignificant (to me) with the new discovery of the $800 U45jc + the 3% cash back + these Dealdig & Bing type of sites. I'll deal with .67 lbs to save $50-$70 and add the other benefits of the U45. Pull out the optical drive, put in a Momentus XT and you've already made up ground.
I haven't gone through every post in this thread but I have read many, however they all mesh together with what I've read on the U30, U33, UL30, etc. Also, these (yours!) are the first U35jc's sold in North America. There could be different specs used for other parts of the world. -
This is a pic from one of the earlier reviews of the U35JC showing 4.0 lbs
-
Looks a little Photoshopped to me!
-
Not to quibble, but he used water to measure the volume of objects, not the mass.
But you're a banker, not a physicist, so we'll let it slide.
-
Here is the actual weight of U35JC-A1:

-
Thanks for replying here Ken! I really appreciate the fast response to my e-mail.
Very happy with it being 4.0lbs
-
I'll also add a big thank you to Ken and Gentech for the pics!
-
The man needed his commission, that's why!
But I had mentioned that I was planning on buying it online via J&R via Amazon, since I have some left over gift card money in my Amazon account. The guy said "hold on, let me see if you can keep that gift card money" and then gave me a figure of $782.99, with free shipping. What a slick salesman, I couldn't say no. -
LOL! Nice catch!
Even though I graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 20 years ago (mathematics and economics), I must have dozed off in Newtonian physics! -
A picture is worth a thousand words! Ken and GenTechPC are the best!
So it looks like ASUS advertising the U35jc as 3.75 lbs was not correct.
