When that happened to me (it did, but on a different laptop) it was, each time, due to attempts at overclocking the CPU (not GPU). Even on reboot, the BIOS appeared locked. Unplugging it and pulling out the battery for 5-10 sec seemed to reset things.

That may not relate to you at all if you've not been overclocking. Then it may be a BIOS thing.

    I'm not sure.

For me, I found I needed those ATK drivers in mine for things to work smoothly.

And even with them in, I could never remap those arrow keys to launch WinAmp instead of Media Player. Has any one else succeeded to do that? I never could.

Hard for me to disagree with you, since using easyflash bricked me :) Yup, I would concur it is risky. Amazon actually showed in-stock again today, so I ordered again, hopefully better luck this time. Should be here Wednesday due to the long weekend. Wish me luck!

So lucky JFlem, I just got my U35Jc back from Gentech, they dealt with the fact that the touchpad wasnt working (now instead of being unable to re-enable it, I cant DISable the touchpad, but I can live with that and hopefully a new driver or setting will set it straight).

Ive tried installing the 257.21 Nvidia drivers from Nvidia's site, but that hasn't seemed to make the Optimus kick in. What steps did you take and where did you get the drivers to make it work? I don't want to go through the whole BIOS process considering Im comp illiterate.

Secondly how have you guys been able to tell whether or not your optimus kicked in? I only knew because SC2 got very angry when I tried to put it on med/high. I even set SC2 to run on the 310M from the settings.

EDIT: That new touchpad driver fixed the last of those problems! Woot! The only slight inconvenience now is figuring out how to get my computer to ignore the micro usb mouse port until I actually turn on the mouse. Since the USB plug is really small Im going to want to just leave it in, whether Im using the mouse or not. It's easily fixed by doing it manually though lol.

You can get the drivers here: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

I know I could also get the BIOS there, but it looks a bit daunting to someone like me with no prior knowledge. Plus Id just prefer the easier way :)

Still would appreciate any help on the optimus walkthrough!

I ordered my U45JC yesterday, and received it in the mail already today! :D
Just wondering about one thing, what is the "normal" temperature for you guys in idle and load? At first now I had my cpu up in 75-90 while installing different things, and it dropped back to 50 in idle (even tho I am writing a dvd atm, so it might drop a bit more after).
Gpu was around 70-75 or so I guess, and dropped to around 55 in idle.
    Is this normal temperature?

And whats the best program to flash bios? WinFlash? And could someone explain step to step how to do it (havent tried it yet, so might be easyier than I think) and where I download it from. Thanks :)

I tried to find out where the problem came from...but it seems difficult. Now my laptop powers on when I push the button (don't know how it came back...).
I flashed the BIOS to version 208, thinking it was a BIOS related problem, but it doesn't seem so.
What is actually happening is that each time I try a power source, AC or battery, the problem occurs. It's obvious on AC as the laptop powers on "automatically" (it starts as soon as I plug the AC in without me needing to push the power button!). The fan spins like mad and the date/hour reverts back to the day the BIOS was released (August 10th)... It is the same when I put the battery in.
Then when I shut down the laptop, it starts up again normally...until I change the power source...
Does anyone have any ideas where the problem could come from? What should I do? Should I send the laptop back?

hey guys i've got a question. i did a fresh install of windows 7 on my computer, and have installed mostly everything i need. however, my computer recognizes my touchpad as a microsoft ps/2 pointint device and i can't update the drivers using the drivers from the asustek website. my touchpad isn't able to scroll from side to side, but everything else works, but i also am not able to get to a elantech GUI. do you guys have any suggestions?

edit: never mind i figured it out. i actually had to manually update the driver to the elantech drivers from the .inf from the downloaded driver. how did the driver install now recognize my device correctly in the first place...LAME.

A good app for seeing your GPU temps is the newest CPUID Hardware Monitor x64 1.16 (also known as HWMonitor).

WinFlash works great for me. DON'T use the internal BIOS' EasyFlash as a couple of others have bricked their BIOS using it.

Just download the BIOS update file to your HDD. Plug in your notebook. Turn OFF the WiFi and your antivirus. Then launch WinFlash, point it to the BIOS file you downloaded and in about 15 sec it will have done the flash. It's very easy as long as you do the above.

Sometimes when you flash the BIOS, you'll need to enter your BIOS on reboot (F2) and select the default settings and then exit and save.

    And 50C/CPU & 55C/GPU on idle sounds normal. Mine runs a little cooler on idle (45-47C) ... but I have the ever-cool U30Jc ;)

It comes on automatically when you just plug it in?? Oh wow, ddavbro. That sounds serious. These boards can help you with software issues, but not hardware. This sounds like a hardware problem/defect. Especially with the BIOS clock resetting itself.

I'd ask for an RMA from ASUS or wherever I bought it and send it in for repair or replacement. How long have you had the notebook?

taking a chance and reasking my question
Hey guys I got a ASUS U45JC 14" a week ago, it worked great in the begining and now last days it has for some reason really slowed down? For instance if i click the chrome button it takes a while for it to pop up and typing in word is painful since you can press a button and it takes 1-2 second for the letter to pop up..
There is nothing odd in the task manager (cpu and memory usage are fine and normal) and I Havn't downloaded anything or installed anything (except chrome, word was already on the computer).
I really have no idea what it could be... Any suggestions?

Yep, I use hwmonitor, just didn't remember the exact gpu temps, since i cleared hwmonitor already.
And 90-95c on load for cpu, and 80c on gpu is also fine?

Thanks for the help with bios, will do it a bit later when i got time :)

And I know all of this seems serious now...
So I'm really thinking about sending it in for repair...

What do you mean by a 'few revisions short'? Seems like the Acer is pretty much the same hardware as the Asus other than the GFX... is that what you are talking about? Does look like the Radeon kicks the GeForce's butt, however.

Release date on this driver (on the Asus site) is 14 July 10... is that the one you are talking about? I also have an eee1002ha with the elantech pad and love it.

UPDATE: Just realized (going to the drivers page) that they have two uploads of drivers with the same number (very slightly different sizes)... they did, indeed, load an update on 2 Sep (v7.0.5.12, 7.06M), had a 7.0.5.13 in August, and (as I mentioned above, another 7.0.75.12 in July (7.04M). Odd... may be the new Sept. one has the wrong number listed and it is really 7.0.5.14?? Will try and install on my netbook and let ya know what it says!

UPDATE2: Netbook won't load the latest version (the 2 Sep one) as it says it is 64 Bit... could be that is the difference!

    WOO HOO!

Amazon happened to have 5 U35JC in stock yesterday and with my prime membership, I spent 3.99 for next day shipping. It's in my hand now! for the few hours I have it

    1) Track pad is so easy to use, its dimpled but much more refined, there's absolutely no resistance.

    2) Absolutely quiet, yes you know its running but the fan noise is barely a whisper.

    3) There is no flex at all unlike the UL80VT I returned. There's no DVD drive so no flex.

    4) Battery is 8 Cell 5600 Mah.

    5) In Entertainment mode with wifi on, the battery browsing and office document under windows battery meter shows nearly 6 hours. Under Battery saving mode and aero disabled but widget and wifi still active. I set power profile to turn off screen within 1 minute. On and off usage, WINDOWS BATTERY METER SHOWS 10 HOURS! I'm sure I will not get 10 hours, but I know it will be at least a good percentage over 6 hours. I was a bit apprehensive about full cpu's power drainage and 1 GB video card's power usage because I had UL30VT before but that worry is gone.

While the battery won't last as long as UL30VT, I did notice a much improved speed installing and running app on I3-370M vs the low powered SU7300 even overclocked to 1.73 ghz.

    6) Keyboard/key has no flex, they improved something (not sure what it is) and the key doesn't feel cheap like plasticky UL80 or UL30.

    7) LED is vibrant, high contrast and while viewing angle is not good, who really looks at your laptop sideways anyway.

    8) Loaded StarCraft 2 just now and able to play at 1360 x 768 (yes its 1360 no 1366 for SC2) and low and medium detail flawless. game play was fast and absolutely no lag.

For the short time I had it, its a worth successor to UL30 and outshines it in everyway :)

Cool! Looks like I found the right thread :)

I'm not too familiar with Asus, coming from Mac's and Sony. (When I go to assusdotcom and click on the UL35 link it directs me back to the main notebook page?)

I set out to buy the UL30 and came across the U35JC-A1. I have a few questions:

    1. Is this the replacement to the UL30?
    2. Is the weight the same, 3.7lbs with 8 cell battery?
    3. What does the JC and A1 stand for?
    4. I see them with i3 but can't find any with i5?
    5. Is the screen (glossy) the same in both UL30 and UL35?

I can't see buying the UL30 with the U35 now available? The i3 would run adobe CS5 better than the CULV processor, no doubt .

It's hard to find them in stock anywhere, must be popular.

    Thanks!

    1) If you mean UL30VT-A1, then yes.
    2) No, the weight of the U35JC with battery is 4.0lbs.
    3) No clue.
    4) In the US they come with the i3. You can customize it with an i5 if you order from a place like GenTechPC or XoticPC.
    5) I believe you mean UL30 and U35? If so, yes.

Absolutely NO reason to buy the UL30VT IMO with the U35JC out. Although the UL30VT IS slightly lighter and has a slightly better battery life. Getting the i3-370 vs SU7300 makes the advantages of the UL30vt moot IMO. I originally set out to get the UL30VT, but decided to get the U35JC. The i3-370 will run circles around the SU7300.

5 in Stock @ ExcaliberPC.com I ordered from here and it shipped same day. Should be coming Wednesday.

Such a slow down could be caused by any number of things.

Here are a few quick starter questions:
    1) What if you are offline? Does that slow response time continue while offline? Reboot and stay offline. Same slow down?
    2) Is the HDD light blinking very much during this slow response time? Are you trying to open Word very soon after boot up or waking from hibernation?
    3) Have you tried watching the HDD light and waiting until the HDD stops blinking (perhaps 3 min) and then try to open Word?
    4) How long does it take until Word opens and a cursor appears? How about if you close Word and then open it again? Still taking the same amount of time? How long is that each time (1st, 2nd & 3rd times)?

^^ Just be prepared to receive your package in person if you ordered from ExcaliberPC. FedEx wouldn't even leave it at my apartment office because my signature was required.

What kind of Win Experience Index scores are you guys getting with your U35JC? Mine is 3.7 with the CPU being the bottleneck.

    Thank you very much!

Soon as I read your post it confirmed my questions and I ordered one right away. I'm in Canada and found one in Toronto, should have it Wednesday.

It's 9 ounces heavier than the UL30VT right? Footprint is the same so shouldn't notice the weight too much I hope. It will feel lighter than my 13" MacBook Pro I'd think.

I love ultra portables, although I didn't like the Z11/12 at all! They have a different screen now from the xbrite, it's anti glare and real bad, dark area's, viewing angles ... eye strain.

I wonder how I'll like it compared to the 13" MBP which for a portable is quite heavy .... there's not many 'good' ultra portables to choose from, for me Lenovo screens are bad, I don't like Dell much anymore ... leaves very few options.

MacBook Air is nice, but 1 usb port, low power, fan noise, heat and a high price tag ....

    Thanks again!

You're getting 3.7? That sounds low. Are you sure you have the CPU power setting on max 100%? Download CPUID and tell us what speed it is giving for your processor.

My U30Jc gets 4.6 with the bottleneck being the 2D graphics (Aero). How are you only getting 3.7? Your CPU is better than mine (i3-350M 2.26GHz vs i3-370M 2.4GHz). My CPU WEI score is 6.3.

Better yet, here are my WEI scores:

My wife has a 13" MB. It's definitely heavier.

But the MBP's screen will be much better contrast than the U35Jc (truer blacks with no light bleed.) In movies, poor contrast/light bleed causes the blacks to appear as washed out grays.

Yes, the MB/MBP's screens are really nice. Asus on the Windows side I thought was my best option, Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba screens not so good, not a fan of HP ...

My core speed was at around 1.1 ghz. I also had the SHE turned on at max CPU performance settings. I just turned off the SHE and now CPUZ says its running at about 2.4 ghz...

    * edit: now my new WEI is 6.4.(just for CPU)

Great! That's more like it! So what's your WEI score now?

Your bottleneck should be your 2D Aero score, and because the U35's 310M is clocked lower than the U30's 310M, your scores for 2D Aero and 3D graphics should be a bit below mine (you can easily clock your nVidia GPU higher w/ nVidia System Tools and nVidia Control Panel. My GPU's default clocks are 625/790/1530.)

Finally! I have got my hands on the long awaited U35JC and in Canada too! At first was set on getting the UL30JT but after hearing about the U35JC I could not justify getting the JT over the JC. I will follow up on how it performs in the following days!!

By the way, I forgot who inquired, but at at 1v 1 or 2 v 2 , medium detail for StarCraft 2 was fluid, at 3 v 3 or up with massive units, there was some lag. However if you turn all detail to low and set resolution to max U35JC will allow, fluid as Mobile 1.
