I just posted this a few hours ago since noone else has posted a u35jc video as of yet on youtube.

YouTube - ASUS U35JC North American Unboxing

I will also do a video for size/weight comparisons tomorrow, are there any common objects you would want me to compare/reference to get a better idea of that?

    Thanks!
Hmm... I'd like to see for myself how bad the viewing angles really are and I've heard the screen's contrast isn't great either (untrue blacks). I've already read somebody else comment that it handles SC2 nicely so I'm not worried about that anymore... I recall someone having trouble when trying to a 1080p HDTV up to it as a secondary though. Can you use another TV with 1920x1080?
    Thanks again!

I have had my u35 for just over a week now and absolutely love the machine! It meets all my needs for small and light computing power. Now, with your concern for buying online; I know it has its risks, but if you are pretty sure about the model you want, then there is no need to worry about restocking fees and what not. If you do decide to go ahead and buy online, buy from Gentech PC. They have great customer service and will help you with any issues you might encounter with the computer (assuming it is faulty, etc...)

The speakers are reasonable. You are not going to be blown away by their amazing frequency range for example; they have a lot of treble to them, like most small laptop speakers. Compared to my old Dell however, they sound a ton better!

As far as a notebook with an ODD and under 4 lbs. from Asus, it doesn't exist. The other option for you might be the Toshiba R705. It has an ODD and weighs around 3.2 lbs I believe. Good luck!

Well so far ive only tried it on a relatively small lcd tv but it worked fine for that. Was able to handle 720p very nicely for emulators but didn't really try any videos. As far as playing actual games at resolutions like that you can forget about it. But for things like video exporting it should be fine at at least 1280x720 and prlly even 1080p. Ill check at 720p at least tomorrow since its the native res of the tv im using

    If you look purely at specs they both should be about roughly the same size. Asus u35jc is 12.9" x 9.28" x 0.6"-0.98" (W x D x H) and macbook pro is 12.78" x 8.94" x .95"

Yes, it's also in the user manual on the diagram pgs 8-10 for the U35Jc. It says 2 mm metal cable. I haven't seen ANY 2 mm cable locks either, let alone a good/highly rated lock, so please let me know also. Keyed locks > combination locks.

SC2 plays flawlessly... until you go into desert storm custom online battles with 100's of units and playing on wifi. It's probably the wifi but I'll test it on a hard line soon.

i just got uj45c laptop just last friday, core i5 450
and today i decided to easyflash my bios to 207 so i can install latest nvidia drivers.
there was only 1 global download for the bios update so it cant be wrong.
My batt was full, and plugged in, it reached the complete patching part till 100% and even prompted 2 secs to shut down. However, it is no longer starting up, wonder if i have somehow gone wrong n bricked it?

I haven't purchased an external drive as of yet so I've been unable to make the backup disc. Is there any way possible for me to return my PC to a state as if if was just fresh from the first OS install without the programs I installed already?

For some reason, Easyflash seems to be bricking Asus laptops. It's ridiculous. There's been at least one person in this thread that has done this to their U45JC, and in July, I did this to my UL80JT on the day of purchase!

I had the exact same thing happen on my U35JC (first... second inbound tomorrow). Walked through a 'repair' with Asus that did not work... but here it is, on the off chance it works for you: Remove battery and external power: hold power button for 10 seconds (do not release until 10 seconds have elapsed), next, plug in the external power with battery still removed, and hold the power button for 10 seconds, third: add the battery, remove external power, and push power for 10 Seconds... FINALLY, replace external power (battery installed) and press the power button for startup. In theory, this shoudl work (according to the tech) but it did absolutely nothing for mine. According to the tech, it is an 'easy fix' at the factory... but you need to return to Asus for repair. I actually returned mine to the vendor for a new one instead. Good luck. As you may have read earlier (also stated by Asus tech), flashing through the BIOS is really risky, as it bypasses most of the safety net and will allow you to easily install a 'bad' BIOS and brick your machine. I have updated literally 20-30 BIOSs on Asus mobo's, laptops and netbooks and this is my first brick... so may be the model's 'easyflash' in the BIOS that is flawed...

F9 on startup should do the trick... assuming you have not wiped your HD or removed the restore partition. Should bring your laptop back to the way you found it in the box

    Greetings all
I am beginning my journey on securing a u35/u45 haven't decided which one yet but from reading this entire forum i've learned that Ken from Gentech is the best person to go to order one of these laptops. I wanted to know what is his email so i may contact him? Also maybe you guys can answer this for me, someone posted earlier that the seller that they ordered their laptop from removed most, if not all, of the bloatware from their NB, do you think Gentech would do that? or even a clean install?

That was me. I ordered from XoticPC. I had the HDD replaced with a better one because it was more cost effective this way than to buy my own since i already have a portable one and wouldnt need the spare. They did a fresh install on the new HDD and included only asus utilities. So no bloatware, but only because of the new HDD, not because they normally do it.

ah, thanks for the speedy reply. i figured it was a long shot to have them actually do it for me but no harm in hoping.

also i don't know if anyone has been following the Owner's Lounge for the u45 but a lot of people have been complaining about a high pitched noise, possibly coming from the speakers. Their solution for this was to mute the mic because it was some sort of feedback, has anyone else experienced this?

My U45JC hasn't been making any strange sounds. The only annoyance with the laptop is the touchpad, which is still very inaccurate with small movements :p

I placed the order for the U35JC.

I ordered it from Abes of Maine
    for $808.

    ASUS U35JC-A1 13.3" Notebook - Silver

    no tax/shipping charges.
(it even comes with a free optical mouse and $100. restaurant gift card!)

they have an online store and a physical store in NJ.
although it indicates on their website that there is a restocking fee for opened laptop returns,
I spoke with the manager at the physical store
who told me that I can return the computer
if I do not like it, even after opening it, without being charged a restocking fee.

so I feel more secure with my purchase,
seeing as how I have not physically seen this specific Asus model.

I ordered my Canon S90 camera
    from them
and was very pelased with their service.

Which restaurant's gift card? If it's only a resturant that's only in NJ (or one I don't like) then that's pretty worthless.

Well, Ron told me that they didn't get many in and it all went to pre-orders. The reason I thought to call was because the product page listing changed from "Pre-Order / Coming Soon" to "Temporarily Out of Stock".

Got tired of J&R, their ETA according to the guy on the phone is 9/17/10, but since that is about the third ETA I've gotten from them and still no laptop I cancelled my order and placed an order with Gentechpc. It shipped today.

Yup those are the steps the tech gave me... he asked me to use a watch to time the 10 seconds, but didn't specify how much 'leeway' there was... I went a little over 10 seconds each time. Sorry it didn't work... but as I said, didn't work for me either. Good news is I am booting up my NEW U35JC as I type... wish me luck :)

I just got my U35JC from Bhphoto in the NYC Superstore.

I changed the HD for a Intel SSD X25-M.

And I have just one complaint about it: Where is Kensignton lock?? Any tip on how to lock this notebook?

One picture that I took with the U35JC in my kitchen scale.

I also did a video, I am posting in a few minutes.

My order got delayed two weeks too, so I canceled it.

How long does Gentechpc take to ship after you've placed the order, I'm thinking on ordering from there with an upgrade to 8gb and 256ssd.

Why do they offer a Bluetooth adapter, the U35JC has built in Bluetooth right?

What's the weight? Can't read the scale.

Over all how do you like it so far, how's the screen? It's heavier than the UL30 by a little, hoping the U35 seems almost as light.

    Thanks

I am uploading a video to youtube with the scale and measurements that I did.

The weight is 1.815Kg (4.00 lb) and the size is 32x23x2.5 cm

My brother have a UL30, and I compared to it today and is the same case, with the same weight and the LCD is pretty much the same.

It's is a good screen, maybe not the best in the market, but good.

U35JC has built in blue tooth, right? Some places offer adding a blue tooth adapter, I don't understand.

I'm tying to find on online where i can customize it, get good service and fast shipping.

That's amazing, can't imagine why they'd leave that out?

So the blue tooth adapter they sell would stick out from the usb port I guess?

Who should I order from, GenTec or xoticpc?

Any advantages to buying the C2D UL30JC instead, that was my initial plan until I ran into the U35JC-A1

USB micro bluetooth adapters work well and are dirt cheap... I just bought the IOGear GBU421 for under $13 at Amazon (should get it tomorrow). Will meet my needs and barely sticks out of the USB slot when I use it

I ordered mine over the holiday weekend and it shipped Tuesday since they don't ship on Labor day. I ordered mine standard but on the email they sent it says...

"If you order customize notebook please allow 2~5 business days to build and ship your notebook, once your order has been shipped we will email you the UPS tracking number."

They seem very professional, courteous, and fast, which according to what I've read on the forums is their reputation at gentechpc.

Well, the UL30VT (I think that was what you were referring to) gets an hour or two more out of the battery, and is about $100 cheaper. And it has a low voltage C2D. The i3 in the U35JC would probably be as good as a mid to high end C2D, so it can be quite a leap in performance in the right applications.

But that really depends on your needs. If you're not going to be taking advantage of that extra processing power, the UL30VT is a fine machine.

Got mine today and all 'updated' and good to go. BIOS & video driver updates went flawlessly (no brick, yeah!)... for those with jumpy trackpads, mine was bad out of the box... had version 9 (last digit) of the elan software... when I downloaded/installed version 12 (latest) the jumpiness went away and it works perfectly. Great machine

Really? What the heck? Maybe if I keep hunting I'll find a U35JC with BT built in, lol.

Varieties of models are usually region-specific. So the UK-version of the U35Jc has bluetooth. The US-version of the U35Jc does NOT have bluetooth. So it depends on where you are ordering it from.
