She is a;ways open for the new Power4Gear? Really? So I'm assuming your core clock speed also gets lowered automatically when it's on. My 2.4 drops to 1.1 w/ SHE.

Hey guys, just got my U35jc today and absolutely love it! Until I accidently failed when flashing the BIOS anyways. >< long story short, I was trying to update to 208, and some error happened while it was verifying...or something.

Anyways, tech support said warranty's got it covered and its free shipping with 10 to 14 business day turn around. Anyone ever had experience with this? Does it usually take a pretty long time.

Also, just a heads up to anyone considering it: DON'T FLASH YOUR BIOS UNLESS YOU NEED TO. I should've known better myself, but curiosity did kill the cat I suppose (or in this case my laptop).

Curiosity shouldn't kill anything in this case. The BIOS update is a valid (though not necessary) update to the system, released by Asus. HOW it's updated can matter though.

Did you use Winflash or a different utility? It's been discussed in this thread that you want to use Winflash. Other programs can brick the comp as you've unfortunately experienced, though random errors are always possible too. Sucks your stuff is borked but is good the warranty takes care of it all!

I used WinFlash like I read in these forums, and I've used it before no problem on a desktop I've built. It was going smoothly, but reached 6% on the Verifying stage and then gave me some error message along the line of "Could not verify BIOS, abort or flash again." And I would trying flashing again to no avail. I even put the bios on the root of my C: drive and tried it again. This time it said that it was up to date and even showed that it was. ;p. So I updated my video drivers, restarted when it said to, and then blam....
Exciting day just turned into poop. :(

Tech support was nice though, even at 12am. The guy told me to try and send it back to the place I bought it first, but I highly doubt JR.com can fix a corrupt BIOS lol. He did say that since it came with the two year warranty though, that the shipping costs would be covered. Just got wait some now. Thank god I've got a desktop still usable and some Halo: Reach to play!

All is not lost! I called the 24/7 tech support, and although he didn't seem to understand what I meant when I said my BIOS is broken, he's emailing me instructions on sending it in for repairs. And now....we play the waiting game.

Anyone else ever had to shipping something off for repair? What's the best thing to ship in and how long is the turn around, generally?

Typically, ASUS or the manufacturer will mail you an empty notebook shipping box for you to use. It has its own padding, etc. Be sure not to send in your AC adapter with it.

Did he also send you a confirmation email (doesn't always happen, but useful when they do)?

So far, ASUS seems to not be very fast at repairs that they do. Some report 3 weeks or longer.

An exchange via Amazon or J&R is faster, if they'll do it or a repair by an authorized dealer like GenTechPC.

Any idea where they'll have you send it?

I'm not so sure since I never did get the email he was supposed to send ;P.
I went to the RMA Submittal Form though and thought I might fill that out and see. Would J&R replace a laptop that has pretty much been lobotomized? Or would GenTechPC do repairs even if I didn't purchase from them?

That I can't tell you. Usually, the manufacturer decides who you'll send it to. As for J&R, I've no idea about return/exchange conditions.

Hate to keep spamming this thread, but I thought I would keep you guys updated on the whole repair situation.

I called a (semi-) local authorized service center in Atlanta, GA. Rebeca (repair lady) informed me to get an RMA number from Asus first and then call her back and I might be able to send it to Georgia instead of California. If anything, it was at least nice to talk to someone who actually knew what a BIOS was. ;P

I'm trying not to freak out, and it seems the situation is on its way to being resolved. Can't help from almost having a psychotic breakdown from getting an awesome laptop and then breaking it in the same day. o_O

Can someone with a U45JC tell me a little about the track pad and mouse buttons, my youngest son has an Asus F50SF and I think the mouse buttons on that system is horrible and it looks to be the same any opinions?

Hi fellow U35 users, I've ran into a problem with my lappy today, and wondering if anyone would know what's wrong..

So yesterday I was using my laptop at school and I heard some weird noises coming out of the speakers, and soon found out that it was because of the mic was on, so whenever I tap or touch the screen the sound will come out of the speakers. I didn't turn the mic on and from what I remembered I didn't touch any recording settings either. I tried what I could (disabling the microphone, etc.) but the problem is still there. As soon as the logon screen shows up the mic just turns on on its own.

Please tell me what are some possible solutions to this,

    Thanks in advance!!

Have had my U35jc for two days now, so far very pleased with it.

Got the black 5600 mah and 640 gb version.

The cpu whine is there, but it is barely noticable to me, it will maybe annoy you, if you in a complete silent room. But it has to be very silent.

Otherwise the heat is somewhat mediocre. Doesnt get very hot during normal desktop or Word, stuff like that. But when you crank up a game (played BF2 on it for 3 hours) it gets very hot, nothing that you can have on your lap.
But then again, which laptop, does not get hot during gaming?

Build quality seems very good, probably not superb, but still satisfying to me.

Of course the bloatware is terrible, but that's to expect with a new laptop.

Sorry, Dio. I'm not sure what you're trying to say (or ask).

If it is about using the mouse touchpad button, yes, the ASUS single rocker-button is odd. I find mine works best when I aim at pressing it down on the ends (left or right).

Anywhere nearer the middle becomes very hard to press.

So typically, I use the touchpad with my left index finger and position my right index finger on the left or right end of the mouse button for when I want to press it.

Ask again if I've misunderstood you.

Ive had my U35 for around a month now. Still loving it. No problems other than the high pitched noise which i barely notice anymore. =) Very happy with my purchase.

And in case anyone cares you can get Left4Dead2 on steam for $6.79 until Thursday i think.

So what you mean is that it is jammed on the left side?

Otherwise the mousebutton is fine for me, as Quatro said use the left hand index finger to left click. Then I use my thumb on the right hand to right click, while moving the mouse with the right hand index finger.

    :p

Thx for the feed back folks....

I think the single rocker mouse buttons should be separate, Like I said earlier the Asus f50sf my son has is very odd and the left mouse button feels like it stuck you almost have to press rather hard and it looks like the u45 and 35 are the same.
    thx again.

For those that have already mailed in their warranty cards, did you receive any communication from ASUS (letter, email) confirming that they received and processed it? Thanks.

Question, i've been attempting to tweak my u35 to make it run faster, what services and processes have you guys stop? how many processes do you have running once your computer starts?

also i upgraded the nvidia drivers, but i was wondering if that files that were unzipped with it onto my desktop i.e. setup.dll are needed or can i delete them.

edit: another question, i wanted to combine the two partitions into one and i followed the directions posted earlier in this thread: deleting the DATA partition and right clicking on the OS partition and clicking on expand however the expand option is unclickable for me. any ideas what to do? should i delete the actual partition? the green box on the right?
    [IMG][/URL]
what other tweaks did you guys do?

Is my u35jc broken? It never wakes up from sleep or hibernation mode. I've pressed every button and it doesn't do anything. I have to turn off the laptop and turn it back on.

I adjusted my mouse pad to make the 3 finger tap into the middle button and 2 finger into the pop-up menu. But when I use my left hand to do the 3 finger tap, 99% of the time it does the pop-up menu and when I use my right hand to do the 3 finger tap, it actually works and shows the pop-up menu. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?

the reason why apples just last is because people take care of them physically better than other laptops because of how much it costed them

If you son takes care of it and by that I mean doesnt drop it doesnt spill anything minor trama and stress I would say about 4-5 years
of course there will be time when freezes or bluescreen its but I doubt it will just stopped working out of the blue for no reason

Actually you're thinking of the U35F-X1. That is the model with Intel graphics, also in black. Glancing at the Amazon page, the only spec differences for the U35JC-XA1 are the colors and the X comes with a 320gb hard drive instead of a 500gb.

    Hi all,
So I was so excited to get my new U35JC from JR. I turned on and I saw soo many softwares pre-installed =/
The boot time is even slower than my Dell Vostro V13 with SU7300.
So I went to do a fresh installation and now I have a few issues/questions:
    1) Before fresh installation of win7, I had the comp run the rating test and it gave the 3D aero a 4.6. After I did a fresh install and download the driver from latest asus for VGA, I only get 4.3. Why?
    2) How do I know if the laptop is using Intel IGP or Nvidia 310m?

Also, I hear the little high pitch noise that everyone's taking about, but it's okay I think.

    Thanks all.

I was looking at the exact same thing, and by the pictures given by amazon of both products, another difference is the keyboard. It seems the A1 is more European friendly since it has some the vowels have alternate entries for accents and it includes the Euro and the British Pound. It also has a different shaped enter key along with some other differences in the keyboard, primarily in the middle row. I prefer the XA1 myself mostly for the color, and you save ~$20 if you don't mind a smaller hard drive.

How are the reviews for the U35JC's?

    1) No clue. My score lowered when I updated to the latest nVidia drivers.

    2) Right click on the desktop and select nVidia control panel. Then select view and select "Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area". There is another program that Quatro showed me, but I can't find the link right now. What I told you above should suffice though.

The lower WEI for a 310m after the 260.63 betas in my opinion is a more accurate indication of the performance of these cards, it is a 64 bit memory bus after all and the additional 512 vram is a waste and more for marketing then anything else.

With that said I just pulled the trigger on a U45JC I'll have it tomorrow it was between this or the U30JC and in the end after endless scrutinizing of both, it came down to the design the 45 just appealed to me more.

Normally I wouldn't even consider these notebooks because of the graphics cards difficulty to handle games in higher detail settings but I find that I don’t really game much on my notebooks anymore and the specs are good enough for my needs.

Currently I need A good balance of both performance light weight and battery life and the 45 looks to meet those needs we shall see thanks for the great info on this thread.

    I dont know
sometimes i like to connect my J35 to a 52 inch LED tv and I love it that I can watch Full 1080p perfectly

you do realize the extra 512 is use to fill larger screens, right?

Now you have me curious, Dio. I noticed in your sig that you own a Sony Z.

Is there a reason you're going from the Sony Z to the U45 (and you were considering the U30)? The Sony Z is in an entirely different class of notebook.

What are the effects if you didn't wait for the charge light to turn green when you first turned on the notebook? When I got mine, I plugged it in, and then turned it on. Did I mess up the battery? I kept it plugged in till the indicator light turned green, and left it plugged for about an hour or two after that.

I would like to see J30 users play games on larger screens but yes I see your point

    What games do you play?

I'd like to ask this again since I didn't see anyone mention it.

Does Power 4 Gear allow you to configure anything that otherwise isn't possible in Windows power management?

Does anyone run their U35/45 without the P4G while on battery, just with SHE? How does your battery life compare?

I purchased the U35JC-A1 from J&R tonight and my son can't wait to get it.
Any quick tips or things he should know about it?
