Yup, I have two as well... as a 'test' I disabled one (the second... but both appeared identical) and restarted and nothing appeared different. Still has two tabs on the mouse control panel... and clicking on the second crashes it. All gestures still work fine after waking from sleep. No clue what there are two startup programs but will leave one disabled for now and let you know if it reacts differently in the future... but still appears fine now. Have you tried disabling either one?
-
Why revert to the old drivers? I don't see the point? The drivers will work fine as long as you don't put it to sleep. If you awake, you have the regular basic drivers that you would if you didn't have the new drivers. Am I missing something?
I do hope this gets fixed soon though. I love these new drivers too much to stick with the old ones 100%. -
What functionality are you losing?
BTW, thanks for the GPU driver update link! -
I believe he means it reverts back to the functions of the previous drivers. Just means none of the functions exclusively in the newest ones work. Same thing that happened to mine.
-
I just dont see the point of having the new ones until they are fixed. I have no new functions, an extra tab that causes the mouse properties window to stop working and some other problems that may not have been noticed due to their instability with my system. Why keep them when the old Asus endorsed ones will give me the same functions im receiving without any extra catches?
-
Hi guys,
Just received my U45JC, very happy with the laptop, thankfully I"m not experiencing the CPU whine and keyboard flex that a lot of people had complaints about - keyboard is rock solid!
The only issue I'm having is with the trackpad. In short, it sucks. The two finger scroll is really, really bad, only sometimes working. Also I find the touchpad itself quite unresponsive.
I've updated to the latest driver I found on the Asus support site (7.05.12) and it didnt help. Playing with the multitouch settings in control panel didn't help either.
I've had a search but this thread is 250+ pages long, so apologies if this has been covered before - but is there anything I can do to fix it?
Also, I've gotta say the blinking blue lights on the front of the machine are really annoying. Is there any way to turn them off?
EDIT: I've found that in the ELAN settings, disabling "smart area" really helps with two finger scrolling. It's much, much more responsive now, awesome. Now if only I could disable these blue LEDs.... -
Don't you still have the new features prior to waking up the laptop?
Also, the functionality that I lose are just the new gestures. I can still use the track pad just fine with 2 finger scroll etc.
BTW, you're welcome for the link! -
I'm missing something here. When I use the ASUS-provided 7.0.5.12 ElanTech touchpad drivers, I have 5 gesture categories: Button, Tapping, Scrolling, Drag and Drop and PalmTracking.
When I install the beta (even though it reads WHQL) 8.0.7.0 touchpad drivers, I have those five gesture categories PLUS an added SIX categories of Edge Scroll, Zooming, Rotation, Swipe Page, Fast Keys and Sensitivity; each of those with some more subcategories.
How is it you have no new functions with these new beta drivers (plus that annoying crashing extra tab)? -
For those of you having problems with losing the features on wake, have you tried throwing in a shortcut for the drivers in the Startup folder?
I had the same issue on my u52f but fixed it when i clean installed the 8.0.7.0 drivers. -
I was wondering the same thing. I truly see no reason to revert to the old drivers because you will STILL have the old functions after you wake. Its not like the old track pad gestures do not work anymore.
I LOVE the new gestures. Especially the ability to go back/forward on websites. I really wish we could program specifically what we want a gesture to do (As in typing in a key shortcut like F9). I would like to make the "Fast-Keys Switch" make the web page refresh when swiping down. No big deal, but it would be pretty cool. -
I do have those new functions for a bit. What i mean is once i put it to sleep it reverts back to those 5 functions you mentioned. So to have new features i would have to reinstall the drivers every time i want to use them and after every sleep/wake thereafter.
-
Oh, sorry i forgot to mention that controldeck started doing strange things like randomly popping up when i had the new drivers. Once i reinstalled the old ones that problem was gone. No idea how they are related, but that was one of my other reasons for reverting back to the .12's.
-
I reverted back to the old driver for the touchpad. My notebook started having other additional problems outside of the loss of gestures after wake. My keyboard wouldn't type at certain times anymore and when I double tapped the touchpad to double click desktop icons, it would bring up the pop up menu. I had to actually press the mouse button for a double click. Too much instability for me.
-
i don't know if this is helpful, but a quick look on ELAN's website (was looking for the driver, but didn't see it. anyone has a link?), i saw the line "please uninstall your old driver before installing the new one"... did everyone do that already?
-
What? You shouldn't have to reinstall the drivers every time you want to use them. The new drivers work fine if I reboot the PC after awaking it from sleep.
I did that, but the problem is that if I uninstall the driver it will ask to reboot for the changes to take place. As soon as the PC is booted, Windows automatically installs the missing drivers that it knows is required for the touch pad to function. -
Then I am more blessed than the rest of you. I don't know why, but when I awake from sleep or hibernation, all of my new gestures are still there.
I don't have ControlDeck installed so no comment there. But I can find nothing odd in the drivers except the double Elan tab under the mouse settings that will crash it if I seek to click on both of the tabs. -
Did you reboot the notebook when you uninstalled the original drivers ? Or did you just uninstall, ignore reboot prompt, install new drivers, and restart?
It asked me reboot (which I did), but then Windows automatically installed the required drivers. I then installed the new drivers on top of it, but I still get the issue from waking up.
What shortcut exactly did you put in the Startup folder? -
Mine didnt work upon reboot. Only if i reinstalled. =(
And Quatro you are quite lucky. Ive spent too much time trying to get them to work so im just going to sit back and relax until they are officially released or a newer version shows up. -
Quatro... still works great on my U35jc as well... one thing that intrigues me... if you recall, we discussed gestures here a month or so ago... 7.0.12 gives all the gestures on my eee but not on the U35... so we both figured it was unable. Odd that they all work with this load... must be a simple 'switch' in the drivers that turns certain gestures on/off by model, since we now know that the trackpad on this machine is just as multi-touch usable as the eee's!
-
I uninstalled the old Elan drivers and rebooted. After reboot, my touchpad worked, but the Elan drivers were not present. Win 7 just put in a generic PS2 mouse driver. The Mouse options under Control Panel showed no Elan tab at all.
But when I then clean-installed the Elan 8.0.7 drivers, I found I again had 2 Elan tabs and if both were clicked, it would crash.
Yes, I was thinking the same thing yesterday. Curious that my eeePC Elan driver offers multi-gestures on the eeePC but not on my U30Jc (the same driver) ... but this beta driver does.
Cool that it does, but no idea why. -
THINKING OF BUYING U35JC...
Its been in production since May. It's been 5 months now.
Will there be a refresh in the next month?
What about USB 3.0, How important is that for waiting 1 or
2 more months for newer models to have that?
I can either get the U35 tonight for $756 from J&R with fatwallet CB
or Wait another month until Black Friday in hopes a better price occurs
or a Refresh of this model suddenly appears.
BTW, AMEX already told me they would extend the accidental
damage to 2 years on this model. -
I'm in the same boat and because of the amount of time I've spent waiting to purchase this, I think I'm going to wait for the next model. I'm hoping this chassis will be used again in a new model with an i-series processor and most importantly, a Nvidia GeForce 4xxM card!
-
I absolutely love this laptop. I am very happy with it. USB 3.0 really isn't a big deal to me. I rarely have anything plugged into the USB slot besides the occasional flash drive. There will definitely not be any kind of refresh model this year. Its only been in the states for close to 2 months.
Also, Asus will give you 2 years of accidental damage if you send the registration card off within 30 days. AMEX should extend it 1 more year making 3 years.
I say go with this laptop. $736 is a great deal. -
Seems to me the Accidental Damage Warranty is nothing but hot air. Was your warranty card returned as undeliverable? I wonder if it's possible to have the Post Office notarize the contents of an envelope containing the warranty card in preparation for it to be returned as undeliverable & being evidence of following warranty procedures.
Amazon.com: Customer Discussions: Asus Accidental Damage Warranty -
Not certain about others but my ADW extension was approved and I received an email from Asus about 3 weeks after I sent it in, saying it was received and approved... worked like a champ.
-
depending on your model and retailer, the ADW may or may not be offered. I think for some Eee models ADW is not available. but a call to the retailer usually clears it up.
i think i've also noticed that for some models/retailer the warranty coverage is only a year, so if you are unsure, definitely ask before purchasing.
I've had my U35 for over 2 weeks now. absolutely loving it. i'm looking forward to the new touchpad driver which would give me all the multitouch gesture functions. -
Mine was also approved after a few weeks. No problems whatsoever with the warranty.
-
I have yet to be approved for the additional year. Never received an e-mail. Would they be able to confirm it if I called them?
-
Hey guys.. Finally got my u35 back from rma and have been running some battery tests. After a clean install of win 7 pro I am getting about 8550ish on idle using batterymon. It jumps between a low of 8500 and 10000. This gives me about 8 hours and 30 mins with wifi on, brightness at 0, and P4 set to battery saving mode.
Did we ever come to a consensus on what was the best way to conserve battery power? I'm not concerned about the cpu whine. Regarding the microphone, is it better to leave "Listen to this device" unchecked and mute the device for the best battery life? Thanks! -
Got my U35JC today! woohoo!
Wanted to know if someone bought an anti glare sticker for the screen? if so could recommend which to buy? -
hi guys i was really set on getting the u35jc until the reviews about the ridiculously bad viewing angles turned me off. Its currently not out in Australia yet so i cant get my hands on it, so can any of you guys compare it to another asus model?
thanks! -
I have been relentlessly (lol) trying to find a way to fix this issue so the drivers would work when I woke up the laptop. Still nothing. I don't know what else to do. I keep trying because we do have a U35JC user who installed these drivers and it works upon wake up for him. I followed his procedure step by step, but I still can't get the drivers to function on wake up.
Hmm.. -
Congrats on the U35 choice Jclark! I love mine too.!
I got my u35jc about a week and a half ago after months of late nights researching which current super thin light yet powerful machine to get, and this is the one. Until the 400m gpus arrive in a thin machine this sexy, this is the one for me. I love it, and about viewing angles, like they say, if you aren't showing your family a movie, just you using it, there is no issue. I have had no problem with angles so far. I love this laptop.. Oh one small thing, i detest it's mousepad, but that's just me, everyone else seems to love it! Good thing I have a tiny usb mouse the size of a jelly bean to bring everywhere with me..
I have a question though, I'm a 3d artist, so I'm looking for some possible CPU upgrades from this i3-370m.. I've done alot of research, and searched this thread and seen almost all of the pages here, great thread btw, but I can't seem to find someone who has popped in an i7 or better cpu yet ... I know this cpu is the arrandale socket 1156 LGA, so any 1156 LGA will work in it ? Any others ? ANy advice or knowledge would be awesome, I'm looking to buy an i7 maybe i9 iff possible for this beast soon.. -
I dont know which one you have, but i believe on the American model the CPU is actually soldered in. Ken from Gentech mentioned it a ways back in this thread. If you have a different country's then good luck! I would love to hear how it works with a higher power CPU!
-
Oh, that blows, I just ordered this last night and saw the pic now that it is soldered in. I was hoping to upgrage to i5 die shrink whenever it came out. This is making me reconsider canceling my order and going w/the the acer 3820tg. Why the hell have all the i5 versions of this Asus board disappeared, it's even hard to find on asian search engines.
Now I'm wodering if I just get my wife in China to order this for me with the I5 instead and how that affects the warranty if I need to return it within the US.
The I5's here are going for $850 to $950

Well, I guess I'm over-reacting. And those of you who answered about looking for a refresh on the cpu can see the I5-460M is not much of an improvement over the I3-370M in the US model. Additionally the I5-460 IS the most recent refresh since September. Other than "Turbo Boost" and a slight bump in GPU clock and multiplier on the cpu I can't see a whole lot of difference. I also checked intel websight and saw the same specs.
I5-460M
Intel Core i5 Mobile I5-460M
I3-370M
Intel Core i3 Mobile I3-370M CP80617004119AL
I could get the I-5 version from China easily through my wife, but I'm wondering if it's worth negating our distinct accidental damage warranty and any additional US warrantees given by a credit card purchases for a product bought overseas.
So I'm guess these difference would never be noticed even in the most intense cpu related scenarios? And, I'm wondering if those I-5's are "Soldered in" the motherboards over there. -
scwam,
The U30JC-xx still has a socketed motherboard. You can upgrade all the way up to an i5 580m. There is not a lot of difference between the U30JC and the U35JC. -
Hi folks, I'm debating between buying the U30JC and the U45JC, since the U45 is the newer model. However, the major differences I could see are the screen size, the HDD space and the extra 512MB in the Video card.
I don't particularly care about the screen size or the HDD, but how much would the extra 512MB matter for casual gaming? And would you recommend the U45 over the U30 knowing the issues with the high pitched whining that some users have noticed? Thanks.. -
Hey guys im thinking about getting one of these 2 models. I bought a sony vaio 15.5 eb series and will be returning it in a few days. I mainly will play online poker and run this program called Holdem manager. Besides that, web browsing and listen to some music and thats it.
I liked this laptop because its light and battery life is good. Can someone tell me the battery life of both laptops? Anyone think 13.3 and 14.1 is a big difference in screen size? I heard 14.1 was the perfect laptop size. 13.3 is a bit too small and 15.4 was a bit big even though i think its great if you don't move around. Also what is the weight of these laptops and is the 14.1 heavy at all?
Can someone tell me if there is any annoyances with any of these laptops? the sony i bought had a hissing noise and battery life isn't is good though it was a 15 inch laptop. I heard the trackpad wasn't that good. I hear some people here mention the high pitched whining noise. Is that similar to the sony one because that is really annoying.
Also, what site would be best to buy these laptops? I need 7200 rpm for poker and saw that i could upgrade it with xoticpc.com but most sites like amazon only has it with 5400rpm. -
Size and weight is really personal preference. Don't ask people, just go into a store and compare yourself. I think 13" is perfect but some think 14" is even too small of a screen. Then compare the weights for yourself too. The Macbook pro is praised for it's form factor and build, but it does weight 4.5 pounds, which I thought was heavier then I wanted. Really depends on the person's preference.
The high pitched noise does come around and can be annoying at times. But honestly, I just play some music or turn it to entertainment mode and it disappears.
I have the u35 and normally get over 7 hours battery from normal internet use with chatting and minimal videos. perfect for me.
You can upgrade the hard drive yourself. It's extremely easy and you can get a seagate momentus drive that is 7200k and also has 4gb ssd. Heard these drives have great improvements in boot time and opening apps. I believe the drive is around 110 bucks. Plus you can keep the old drive just in case.
The U30Jc appears to have better out of the box gaming power due to the high clocked, but other gpu. The 512mb doesn't make a difference in the gpu power in this case, but can help out if you want to output to a larger monitor/screen. I'd pick the U30, since I like its great air flow even thought it's a little thicker. And it has more aluminum surfaces. I believe Quatro has even overclocked the u30jc to get 3dmark scores above 4k. -
I also agree on the 13.3" size. I personally believe this is the BEST screen size for a laptop. I also receive 7+ hours with wi-fi on and occasional videos with the U35JC. I can get 8 hours with web browsing and no video. I am sure you can see 9+ hours with wi-fi off.
I would go with a U30Jc over a U45JC. Any particular reason why you are not considering the U35JC?
Drew,
I would go with a U35JC over a U45JC. It is thinner, smaller (due to 13.3" vs 14") , lighter, and likely has a bit better battery life due to not having an ODD. The U45JC is 4.6lbs while the U35JC is 4.0lbs exactly. 4.0lbs was the limit for me. I did not want any heavier.
Do you definitely need an ODD? If so, go with the U45JC. If not, the U35JC is the clear winner. I absolutely love this laptop and am very happy with it. The CPU whine can be annoying, but I haven't noticed it as much lately. I'm not often in an area that is EXTREMELY quiet. There are also ways around it like using IE
:shudder:: I know) if you absolutely need to. That is the only complaint I have with this laptop. I absolutely love the track pad as well. Its feels so incredibly smooth and the perfect amount of resistance. The track pad in my sisters HP was HORRIBLE to use. It made me not even want to use it sometimes. Track pad is personal preference of course.
Let me know if you have any more questions as I would be more than happy to help. -
I guess I'm going to continue with my u35 order from J&R for $756.
I checked Newegg China and various other Indonesian and Chinese search engines for models of the I5-U35 but it seems the performance difference is going to be neglegable. I even checked the 1.4kg (3 lbs) Toshiba R700-02B with I-5 for $1200, the elusive UL30JT - RX015V I5-520UM model for $1160 in Indonesia weighing 1.7kg. The only thing I have learned from this is that Asus seems to be lying about weights on exact same models around the world at tradeshows (based on pics) and slightly skewing the weights with the same 6 or 8 cell batteries by +/- 0.2kg. Doesn't sound like much but it can be the difference between a 4lb computer and a 4.7 lb computer. I want closest to 4lb as possible and the choices are pretty limited at that weight with questionable weight claims at times. It's a big dissapointment that this CPU can never be changed but I think the only major performance jump will not be a cpu upgrade to what comes next, but a total socket change by intel anyway. I considered the U30JC someone recommended prior but it was one of the laptops that I especially had issue with on inconsistent weight claims ranging from 1.8kg to 2.2kg. I don't want to take that chance in getting a 13.3" notebook that is almost 5lbs.
On a side note: I talked to my wife in China about Asus. She asked a friend who used to own a computer shop in China and told her not to buy Asus because of the quality not being good. We both think it may be because the Chinese don't care for Tawaineese companies. The guy said light computers are not high quality and recommended Lenovo (go figure). She further said that the factory for Asus is in Shanghai so she also felt the quality was not good comming from China. I told her that her recommendation for a Sony is probably comming from the factory across the street from Asus. -
The U35JC is DEFINITELY 4.0lbs exactly. The US model anyways.
-
@scwam. quality wise yes, Sony laptops usually have better build quality but you also pay much much more... don't let "made in china" fool you, pretty much all the electronics you buy is made in china these days, even parts on a Sony, not all of them are ty in quality, look at apple for example, all their stuff is from china. I've lived there for years and for the most part, the real crappy stuff are usually not exported and sold only domestically, which is why chinese are more likely to bash the "made in china" tag
just my observations -
Yeah, the build quality in Sony's and Apple's notebooks will surely surpass that of Asus notebooks. The U35JC build quality doesn't amaze me by any means, but it doesn't bother me that much. I primarily got this laptop for battery life, power, and being a thin & light.
-
Folks, thanks for all the advice.
The U30 sounds good. I already have an Alienware M17x that's my high end gaming machine/desktop replacement, but it's almost impossible to carry around (think it weighs like 11 pounds, and REALLY needs an external mouse). So I'll be using that to output to any TV if the need arises. I plan to use this as my secondary machine and for travel etc.
Several of the games I play - and specifically the lower end games I'll be playing on this machine, are on CDs and require a CD in the drive to play. Since I don't see myself downloading a ton of games I already have via Stream anytime soon, I'd rather keep a drive handy. So the primary reason is the internal Optical drive.. -
Are you guys saying that both of these laptops have that high pitch noise? How annoying is it? Is it similar to the noise in sony laptop when you have firefox opened? Because that noise was really annoying to me. Is there any asus that doesn't have this noise?
Relentless, what is ODD? -
I may be wrong, but if im honest every single laptop with an i core processor makes the high pitched whining noise. I have used a few now, all different manufacturers and they all make this annoying noise.
It seems that certain people cannot hear the frequency (some people say its age groups), i was looking at someones 15" toshiba the other day and it made the noise really bad, much worse than the U35. I said to him i bet that annoys you, he was probably in his 40's-50's and he couldnt here it.
I made the mistake of being off put by all these reports of the whining. But the truth is that the only way around it is to not buy a i core processor. Although maybe the newer i core processors due out wont have this annoyance. -
I know im not Relentless, but ODD means Optical Disk Drive.
-
Can someone else confirm all i core processors have this noise? Its the same one as the sony one right? What processor would be right below i core so i might get that instead b/c the noise on the sony bothered me a lot.
