Unfortunately, no it has not been fixed. But it seems that as i have been my U35JC it has either been becoming more infrequent or i'm just not noticing it as much anymore. I am using it for college too and it was a wonderful choice. Great for carrying around because of its weight and battery life and can handle some light gaming for when you really need those homework breaks and want to shoot some zombies.
-
It hasn't been fixed, but if you use Firefox, you can eliminate it in most cases with a tweak of the flash settings. The only other time I get it is when using MediaMonkey, and it stops when I start playing music anyway.
-
Thank you, JFlem and VittorioE. Good to know that the whine is insignificant.
I have one more question for anyone that ordered from B&H: can I get a student discount on the U35JC? I just sent in my info to get confirmed as a student and I'd imagine that it would take a bit of time to process it; however, I want to order the laptop tonight. So if there's a discount, I'll wait until the confirmation process is done. If not, then I'll just go right ahead and order it. -
IF you have an Amex card Use that card. I've already spoken to Amex several times about extention of the Accidental warranty being covered for an additional year. The normal warranty is a given, but the accidental warranty will also be covered by them since Asus considers this a US warranty and a US ASUS repair facility is located in the US. Amex specifically covers warranties that are up to 5 years where other cards only cover a limit of 3 year warranties. Working in the credit card industy once, I believe Amex is more reliable on warranty coverages than any other company. To register the accidental warranty, make sure to register as a user first in the Asus Warranty thread details and then register the serial and then the Accidental damage. In essence you should get a 3 year global and 2 year accidental under the Amex card.

Thanks for the reply. Do you remember where you found it for $800 and which ones have the 8 cell battery? I see the i5-460M processor was just released in September. Is it already available in Asus laptops?
Is the i5 version of the U35Jc available in any countries besides Taiwan and China? Maybe Korea?
Thanks! -
Hi. I bought the UL30 last year and I'm wanting to buy the U35JC now
But I saw a video on YouTube about the Asus U31/U41.
Then I found this Chinese website with some details on it: Asus U31
It seems to have the i5 460M and NVIDIA GT415M
Its design looks similar to the U33 with speakers above the keyboard and maybe an aluminum palmrest
Do you guys think this will be available in the US by the end of the year? Thanks -
So after using my laptop since I got it in early September, my laptop now randomly restarts. I would be writing my paper and the screen would just go black, like a hard restart. I did a system restore to no avail, but I havent changed anything that would cause such a system bug. I did not install new programs or update windows, and also did not install any new drivers and my laptop is virus clean.
Can anyone offer a solution/theory? my laptop is relatively new and I hate to see it having problems already despite ASUS's rep for quality
PS i take good care of this machine too, regularly cleaning it and keeping it in its neoprene case whenever i travel with it, maybe i have a bad lemon? -
Wow, p0int. Sorry to hear of your problem!
Let's hope it is a software issue that can be fixed by reinstalling the OS.
Got an extra HDD lying around that you could try and do a fresh install of Win 7 just to see if the problem persists?
It is under warranty, but ASUS keeps it a while for repairs (I heard wild numbers like 3-4 weeks).
I had a Thinkpad that did that. Turned out it was a heating issue with the processor fan. So it was restarting due to heat. I hope yours is NOT that and not hardware-based.
Another friend had random restarts, but his was virus-based.
Do you have HWMonitor x64 (1.16) installed? Can you keep tabs on the temps or have it write to a log in the background?
Just wondering. Bummer. -
Hello, i have a Asus notebook U35JC series. I have had it for 3 weeks and I did something yesterday that i regret. I wanted to uninstall some programs that came with the pc and i accidentally uninstalled the volume handling keys, not the Fn key, but just the Fn+F10, Fn+F11 and Fn+F12. I have tried searching for drivers for this but I cant find any, can anyone help me?
I would be very glad if someone also could tell me which programs i should save and which ones to uninstall.
Thank a lot / George -

You need the atk hotkey and atk media drivers.
-
Wow, thank you very much. It works perfectly.
-
Elantech drivers are essentially not letting me double click on a word to select/highlight and then drag to select/highlight more words by tapping (i.e. triple tap on word then drag = double click on word then drag). It DOES work when I use the awkwardly placed "button".
When I uninstall the drivers and use the standard win 7 x64 driver, the described behavior works--but I lose hot key disabling of the touchpad and horizontal scroll capabilities.
I think this is a feature elantech overlooked because it is primarily based in China and Taiwan where all the words are letters and this such feature would not be necessary-- and easily overlooked. OR that I have a defective unit that just somehow clashes with the drivers.
I'm on an OEM install of bios v208 and have been spending the last 24 hours looking for a solution/installing various drivers including synaptics, the new ELAN 8.0.7.0, the two featured on the ASUS website, and an older 7.0.4.12 (?). Synaptics drivers I have tried (15.x.x and 14.x.x) work just like the default Win 7 drivers restoring the function, but losing horz scroll and hotkey disable.
WAS wondering if anyone else was having this problem or if it is just me. Along with spending the last 24 hours looking for a solution, I've also been trying to search for anyone else having the same problem. So far, I seem to be the only one.
Some other things... The i3 high pitched whine is very much audible... which has no fix yet that doesn't compromise battery life/fan speed. The keyboard flex is JUST tolerable, imo. Although, I already found a fix for that.
Really don't want to return this unit back to the store. Really like the chassis and sturdiness of it. Although, my last laptop is a 6 yr old Turion Compaq Presario which has never annoyed me as much as this computer has in the last two days.
On a last note, PLEASE, any help/info on your u35/u45 would be greatly appreciated. -
As far as your touchpad problem goes, i haven't been able to do that on any computer iv'e used, including my U35JC. There is a function however that allows you to double tap and keep your finger down to drag and highlight on the second tap. Just tap twice and dont release the second tap. By the way im using the .12 drivers.
As far as the whine goes many other computers with the i processors have it and it was even known to be present in the core2duos. If you cant deal with it then im afraid you may have to keep buying new machines until you get one that doesnt have it since no company has come up with a fix yet.
Good luck with whatever you choose. Im using my computer for college work and some light gaming and it has performed up to and beyond my expectations.

Hey everyone, do you know if the u35jc and u45jc has a similar build quality? I am not sure if the u35jc is built very good or not BUT i heard the u45jc isn't built very good because the area with the battery is a bit loose etc. Can someone explain this a bit better?
I don't know but i used a 13.3 screen before, it was a macbook the white one and it was really tough on my eyes because everything was so small. You think 14.1 would be a bit better for me? I don't want a 15.6' laptop because i have an old one and it was just so big.
Also, do you guys know how long you battery life would be with Wifi on fully and everything on normally without you making any tweeks to the system for the u35 and u45? -
dows anyone knows if i can add a bluetooth mini card on the U35jc? i saw some mini wireless with bluetooth, but i know that some laptops got 2 separate cards!
i just bought this laptop and i cousing is bringing it from US to Brazil to me ... i didnt know that 310m was 64bit and DDR3 not GDDR3
.... 128bit would be awesome!!! but at lest it is better that Intel HD???
-
About 5 times in 3 days, i haven't had the chance to troubleshoot since I have too much stuff going on right now (real life). Hasn't restarted today yet however, I still cant isolate the source, it really seems random.
heat isnt the issue as HW monitor never shows critical temps and msot restart occur while doing very light office tasks -
Hey Guys,
Been a while since I've dropped into this forum after getting my U35JC. I have to say I've been loving my purchase
I'm a big Linux user (Fedora is my linux flavour of choice) probably because I administer hundreds of Redhat servers for a living. Anyway, I recently installed Fedora 14 on my U35JC and I noticed that the suspend function wasn't working. When selecting suspend or simply closing the lid the laptop would just hang with a blank screen and the fan would spin up and the only option you had was to hold the power button down for a forced reset.
Rather than trying to find the solution myself, I did a quick google and came across this link in the ubuntu forums [SOLVED] Cannot suspend or hibernate Asus N61J Laptop - Ubuntu Forums (hissssssssssssss Ubuntu... evil!) Hehehe.. not really, but we all have our biases
Anyhow, to cut a long story short, there was a solution to my suspend not working woes within the afore mentioned thread and I though I might distill it down into some relatively simple instructions and include it here for my fellow U35JC users who want to use linux.
Note: I can confirm that this fix works for Fedora 13 & 14 and most of the resent Ubuntu releases. I'm not the author of the scripts below, so I have included the authors names from the Ubuntu forum within the comments at the top of the scripts.
1. Open a terminal window and su to root or on Ubuntu sudo to root
FedoraUbuntuCode:[root@tomato ~]# su -
2. When creating the script files I would normally use vi, but to keep this simple we will use gedit.Code:[root@tomato ~]# sudo -i
The gedit text editor will open up the new file for editing. Now simply cut and paste this into gedit and then save and close gedit:Code:[root@tomato ~]# gedit /etc/pm/sleep.d/20_custom-ehci_hcd
3. Now you need to make this script executable, so do the following also as root:Code:#!/bin/sh # File: "/etc/pm/sleep.d/20_custom-ehci_hcd". # Authors: brocktice and John Dias TMPLIST=/tmp/ehci-dev-list case "${1}" in hibernate|suspend) echo -n '' > $TMPLIST for i in `ls /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/ | egrep '[0-9a-z]+\:[0-9a-z]+\:.*$'`; do # Unbind ehci_hcd for first device XXXX:XX:XX.X: echo -n "$i" | tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/unbind echo "$i" >> $TMPLIST done ;; resume|thaw) for i in `cat $TMPLIST`; do # Bind ehci_hcd for first device XXXX:XX:XX.X: echo -n "$i" | tee /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/bind done rm $TMPLIST ;; esac
4. The final step is to create on more file using gedit:Code:[root@tomato ~]# chmod +x /etc/pm/sleep.d/20_custom-ehci_hcd
and paste this into the blank text editor and then save and close gedit:Code:[root@tomato ~]# gedit /etc/pm/config.d/usb3-suspend-workaround
5. That's it. Now when you select System -> Shutdown -> Suspend or simply close the lid on your laptop, it will properly enter suspend mode.Code:#File: "/etc/pm/config.d/usb3-suspend-workaround". # Author: John Dias SUSPEND_MODULES="xhci"

Can someone confirm me the actual weight of this laptop without and with the battery? I'm pretty sure with the actual battery is the actual weight correct?
I see 5.1 lbs on xoticpc but 4.6lbs on other sites... -
The U35Jc (US version) weighs exactly 4 lbs with the 8-cell 5600mAh battery. No idea its weight w/o the battery nor the weight of the U45Jc.
-
I don't know if your question has already been answered already but SHE automatically is on once you turn on battery savings mode. Its much better, I use to hate having to switching the mode AND SHE right after. It is off when under high performance.
-
The battery weight is 14.8 oz.
-
anyone????
-
I am looking for an answer to this question as well. An additional question to ask is if the internal bluetooth module is available for sale somewhere? But, that would be dependent on the u35jc having the necessary hardware to connect it in the first place. I would assume that it is the same bluetooth module in many ASUS models.
ASUS estore listed Bluetooth Modules:
A4S/SP-3D BLUETOOTH_MODULE 70-NB06V1000 $18.00
A7V/VB/VC BLUETOOTH MODULE 70-ND01V2100 $23.00
S6F BLUETOOTH MODULE 70R-NEA1V1000 $36.00
So would any of these work? -
Hi -- need some help, please. Had a U35JC for five days now, and seem to have had a headache everyday. Day two, windows desktop went crazy after a video file jammed in Windows Media Center. Deleted the file and things calmed down. Since then, periodically Windows desktop has frozen soon after opening, nothing but the pointer moves or opens. Disk check has run a half a dozen to a dozen times, nothing special seems to show up.
Now there's a problem with sleep and hibernation, which worked fine until last night. When coming out of either, the display screen goes on for a moment, then goes black. If I close the lid and reopen it, the display will go on for a moment, same thing when I toggle display on and off.
Things seem a bit better since I did a system restore to before loading some software, defragmented the C: drive, and loaded all Windows updates, as well as a Nvidia graphics update. Have not noticed any freezing tonight. But I am mostly just putting it in hibernation and seeing what happens. Now, after coming out of hibernation, if I toggle back and forth on the display monitor, or open and shut the lid often enough, the screen will eventually (usually takes about a minute or two of effort) stay on, and so far, the computer performs okay once that happens.
Please, anyone had a similar experience? Found any solutions? I'm not the most knowledgeable, but willing to learn.
Thanks.
. . . and now, for the first time, the same display problem exists when I power up from off, which was not happening earlier today. Brother! Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks again. -
It appears that the UL30VT uses the BT-253 Bluetooth Module from the disassembly manual. Would it be safe to assume the U35JC does as well?
-
Probably not what you want to hear since it is clear you are desiring internal... but I got the iOGear GBU421 Bluetooth adapter and it is awesome. Yes, it is external, but it barely sticks beyond the USB port and the small nub has a blue LED that tells you when it is working. Yeah, you gotta keep track of it when it isn't plugged in... and it uses a USB port (of course you could just leave it plugged in all the time if that worked for you)... but it works flawlessly and is only $12 on Amazon. Depending on how much you use bluetooth (I use it for a GPS module and mouse when I need em... getting headphones too) it may be just the answer for you.
Where'd you get this info? Since the earlier post I read the SHE worked in all modes, but that is a 'good' thing. Like in the eee's, SHE doesn't just underclock... it apparently also overclocks. In theory, with the new P4G Hybrid, it will help preserve battery in the 'slower modes' but will alsol overclock in the power mode... can't recall where I found that though. -
Hey guys what is the lowest price of the u35jc (black version) in the USA right now?
It is 799$ in amazon.
-
yeah I think thats the lowest I ve seen
-
Does anyone knoes the link for u35jc disassembly manual ???? so its uses a add on bluethooth card ???
-
I got it by checking my CPU-Z Core clock-speed for High performance, max=100%, min=100% which I compared to battery saving mode max=100%, min 100%. High performance was 2.4GHZ while battery saving was 1.1.
-
Interesting... was hoping there was some sort of manual or guide for P4G. Good idea using CPU-Z
-
Just to give you guys some info about different SSD's and battery life of the U35jc. I switched to the OCZ agility first gen (Indilix barefoot controller) 60GB the first day I got the U35jc; installed Win7 x64. The battery life in Quiet office mode (30% brightness) when using with that SSD was about 7:15 to 8hrs, giveth or taketh. I recently switched to the G.Skill Phoenix Pro (newer SandForce SF1222 controller, IOPS=50K) 60GB (got it for cheap) thinking that this drive would make the computer perform faster (windows boots, ...). But it does not. The battery life seems to suffer with the new SSD. on the same settings, the computer lasts around 4-5 hrs.
My conclusions: Sandforce-based SSD's will not make the U35jc faster than Indilix barefoot-based SSD's. They are comparable. Digging a little bit deeper, I found out that the U35jc SATA controller is SATA I (150MB/s) not SATA II (300). I know that the intel 55M chipset has SATA II controller but somehow, my U35 stuck at SATA I speed. Therefore, no matter how fast your SSD is, if your SATA controller is saturated then you cannot improve by adding the SSD speed.
Ideas/suggestions/constructive criticisms are always welcome. -
Anyone knows?
-
Drew1, I'm not sure what you want. Though you've not made it clear in your questions above, I am assuming you are asking again because you want to know the weight of the U45Jc, NOT the U35Jc. Right?
If so, you need to make that clear. The first post you quote talks of BOTH laptops.
Why not PM Ken Lee at GenTechPC this question on the weight of the U45Jc? He'll have it in stock & is often very helpful in answering questions.
UPDATE: GenTech correctly lists the weight of the U35Jc at 4 lbs, so I'll assume they correctly weighed the U45Jc as well at 4.63 lbs.
The battery is the same in both, so subtracting the 14.8 oz for the battery leaves a 3.7 lbs weight.
So here's the results:
U45Jc with battery: 4.63 lbs (4 lbs 10 oz)
U45Jc without battery: 3.7 lbs (3 lbs 11 oz)
BTW, I wouldn't trust XoticPC's weight listing for the U45Jc. They also list the U35Jc with the 8-cell at 3.74 lbs. This is for sure incorrect. It's 4 lbs exactly as several have shown in photos of it on a digital weight scale.
Is that what you wanted?
Where did you find the type of controller listed for the U35Jc; that it has a SATA I (150MB/s) controller?
As you say, the U35Jc has the Intel HM55 chipset which allows for 3Gb/s transfer rates over the SATA ports.
My U30Jc also has the HM55 chipset w/ the 3Gb/s transfer rates. I don't think it's SATA I, unless the HDD is limited to SATA I, which my Momentus XT isn't. -
Quatro, yes i meant the u45jc weight and xoticpc's looks off by a bit compared to the other sites which is why i ask this.
-
Apologize up front if this was ever answered... recall the question but don't recall seeing an answer: Has anyone taken the plunge and tried one of the 12 cell batteries? Going on a lengthy trip and considering a second 8 cell vs the 12 cell. Clearly looks like they added some elevation to the back side which could affect viewing angle (on lap, mine is usually close to max open for best viewing). Anyway, considering getting one but was hoping for any 'first-hand' positive or negative reviews.
-
I don't believe it's restrictive to sata I speeds. I took my Crucial C300 out my desktop, threw it in the u35jc and it had sequencial read speads of at least 250 mb/s. You might want to use AS SSD to check your drive alignment.
Regarding the battery weight, I measured the u35 weight 2 weeks ago and I'm pretty sure it was 14.8oz (no more than that), but I may not be remembering correctly and could have read at 14.4, but IIRC it scaled at 14.8oz. -
i bought the momentus XT for my u35jc ... didnt find anyone using this hd with this model! some info about the performance and battery life?
-
Hey has anyone figured out how to adjust the webcam settings?
-
I bought the Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid 500GB HDD last week, cloned my drive & installed it into my U30Jc which runs on an i3-350M (2.26 GHz) processor. I'm not sure how your U35Jc's i3-370M might change that score.
I'm not sure what performance numbers you're looking for, but to help out, I just ran HD Tune 4.6 three times with fairly similar scores:
In real-world use, it boots up twice as fast (cutting each phase in half) and launches my basic apps faster (once their cached)
Word 2007 launches in about 1 sec.
Windows Live Mail 2011 in about 2 sec.
Quicken 2010 in about 2.5 sec.
Windows Explorer in less than a sec.
Of course, it's not twice as fast in launching apps ... just faster. On my old drive, Word 2007 launched in about 1.5-2 sec.
When it comes down to improvements within a sec, it all seems fast to me.
I don't see that it has affected my battery life at all.
Is that what you were wanting to know, FelipY2K?
Could you also run HD Tune 4.6 on your U35Jc's Momentus XT (500GB?) and post your scores for me? Thanks.
NOTE: Looking at a comparison test run HERE (found over at TechGage.com), it's clear my Momentus XT Hybrid HDD is running within very normal parameters. Here is their chart of results below to put the Momentus XT 500's performance along with other brands. It's clear it is faster ... but it's no SSD. Not even close.
HD Tune also doesn't show off the hybrid strength of the XT. Note that it tests near the identical speed of it's brother, the regular Momentus 7200, which isn't the case when you really use them.
-
Looking into getting a u35jc. Seems the only issue I see really people talking about is the touchpad, is that correct?
J and R has a u36 on their website for pre-order. Whats the info on that thing?
Thanks. -
Thinking of getting the U45JC. By the sounds of some above posts, it is pretty easy to open up the laptop and change hardware (eg HDD)? I have done so before with thinkpads and dells and wanted to know how easy it is to open the Asus laptops?
Also, I don't suppose that either of the U35JC or U45JC have any USB3.0 ports? They don't seem to have firewire or eSATA ports either, so no high speed ports? -
There's also a CPU whine nobody can figure out how to silence. Interesting discovery regarding the U36! I was excited to search it up, but disappointed it doesn't have a 400M series card in it.
-
The HDD & RAM are easily accessible (& upgradable) via small screw-in plastic plates in the bottom housing.
The mini-wireless card is also easily accessible & changible in my U30Jc & the U33Jc but NOT the U35Jc (housing is too thin so you can't lift the card to remove it. You have to disassemble the notebook.)
The U45Jc is deeper, so the wireless card is probably also easily removable.
No, no high speed ports (USB 3.0, firewire or eSATA) in the U35/45Jc's. -
Does the U45JC play 1080p movies?
-
Yeah, I didn't find it anywhere else, maybe a misprint. Seems like the only difference is the i5 instead of i3? Ohhh BLuetooth as well.
Wonder when it is coming out? -
It can if you have an external blu-ray drive connected by USB. I do.
The 1366x768 screen & nVidia 310M are quite capable of displaying 1080p movies. -
webcam help...anyone?
-
Thanks for confirming that..
I tried playing a 1080p film of .mkv file in vlc and it did not respond.. got to check it another system if the file is crouppted or not.. -
What help are you needing? What's the problem?
Oh! And here I forgot about HD files. I was only thinking of blu-ray.
