Looks like the U35JC is in EOL U36jc showing up all over the net in the last 24 hours.
I-5 Bluetooth color seems to be black from all the listings maybe they fixed the whine, maybe it has widi too and 7200 RPM drive no USB 3.0 the only real bummer is they didnt use a 415GPU still using the 310.
Price seems to be in the 900-1000 price range we shall see.

the video is too dark when using the webcam on gtalk, i wanted to know if there where i could find the default program to adjust brightness, color settings, etc.
-
Silly not a better GPU....would prefer a better gpu and the same cpu. :-\ Looks like I am going to go with the Acer over this.
-
ASUS LifeFrame has tools to adjust the resolution, brightness, etc of the webcam.
Do you have it installed?
LifeFrame also activates the Fn+V hotkey. -
sorry OOT
ust wanna asking one thing!
[WTA] Can I Upgrade the processor of Notebook ASUS UX30 Series??
does anyone here knpw how to solve this case please??thx

Go here and enter "Notebook" then the series and model you have. LifeFrame will be under utilities. -
Hi guys, i have 3 questions regarding the Asus U35F-X1
1) What is the useable amount of RAM under 64 bit OS? obviously it should be 4gigs, but as far as i know the integrated intel vga uses shared memory?
2) Has anybody installed 32 bit OS? (win 7 or vista) And what is the recognized amount of memory?
3) Is it ok to use this laptop without cooling pad even under load?
Is there any issues i should consider before buying the device
10x
by the way, great thread
-
Hey guys, new owner of an ASUS computer here. I just bought the U35JC-XA1 last night.
Specs:
intel i3 370m
4gig ram
300 hdd (5400)
Nvidia Optimus
It is a great computer but there is just one thing that is bothering me. Everytime i change a setting to my task bar or if i change my wallpaper, when i shut down or restart the settings go back to factory...Why are my settings not saving when i shut down and such? I can't stand the original asus wallpaper...
Thanks in advanced. -
Depends. The processor in the U30Jc is upgradable. In the U33Jc (& the U35Jc, I think), it is soldered in. I've no idea about the UL30Jc.
8GB usable under Win 7 x64.
4GB usable under Win 7 x32.
** Both of those amounts are BEFORE shared video RAM is subtracted. So under the U35F w/ Intel IGP, it will show less, of course, depending on the amount of RAM given over for the IGP's use. -
Yeah but 4gb usable under x32 is quite impossible isn't it? in my oppinion the amount should be around 3,25-3,5gb, but i'm not sure, that's why i'm asking.
What is the amount of the shared video memory anyway? Is it customizeable? -
My U35JC with 64 bit operating system shows 3.79 GB of ram available with 4 GB installed.
-
thanx for the info bro .. my laptop will come 20 nov ... will post for sure later.
-
HERE is the U35Jc driver-specific page over at ASUS. ASUS LifeFrame will cause your Fn+V to begin to work.
You can find LifeFrame3 under "Utilities". Most of your Fn+Hotkey functionality is installed via your ATK drivers. There is a section on that page for that as well.
ASUS Splendid Utility will cause your Fn+C hotkey to work.
You can find all of your latest drivers there.
Do you not have your ASUS driver DVD that should have come with your U35Jc?
Many people doing a fresh install have overlooked installing the "Intel Management Engine Interface" drivers.
My experience with fresh installs has been that wherein possible, install ALL of the related ASUS drivers & Utilities. Then mess with them. If you don't like or don't need them, uninstall them. I had done several fresh installs and, using someone else's bloatware guide, I found I had missed installing several utitlities that were actualy useful or needed, IMO. Just a heads-up.
PS, ALLurgroceries. if you want to merge these two posts (responding to three posts) please do. I'm not sure how at this point as the second one is already quite long! -
Relooking, it appears Win 7's 32-bit boundary is 3.5GB RAM (though whether that's after shared video memory is subtracted from the total, I don't know. I jumped directly from win 7 x32 w/ 2MB to Win 7 x64 w/ 4GB).
HERE is a good response:
Windows will only see a portion of your 3.5GB physical RAM. This behavior is due to "memory mapped IO reservations". Those reservations overlay the physical address space and mask out those physical addresses so that they cannot be used for working memory. This is independent of the OS running on the machine.
Significant chunks of address space below 4GB (the highest address accessible via 32-bit (2 to the 32nd power = 4GB)) get reserved for use by system hardware:
• BIOS – including ACPI and legacy video support
• PCI bus including bridges etc.
• PCI Express support will reserve at least 256MB, up to 768MB depending on graphics card installed memory
Globally, between ~256MB and 1GB of address space below 4GB may be reserved for hardware use. The OS will not see these Address spaces.
And HERE is yet another good post on the matter:
All 32-bit client versions of Windows (not just Vista/XP/7) have a 4GB address space (64-bit versions can use much more). That's the theoretical upper limit beyond which you can not go.
But you can't use the entire 4GB of address space. Even though you have a 4GB address space, you can only use *around* 3.1GB of RAM. That's because some of that space is used by hardware and is not available to the operating system and applications. The amount you can use varies, depending on what hardware you have installed, but can range from as little as 2GB to as much as 3.5GB. It's usually around 3.1GB.
Note that the hardware is using the address *space*, not the actual RAM itself. If you have a greater amount of RAM, the rest of the RAM goes unused because there is no address space to map it to.
And HERE is a technical release from Microsoft on the matter.
Here's its summary:
Mine shows the same, but I'm assuming that's because a bit of my RAM is being set aside for use with my Intel IGP.
But this doesn't answer the question "How much usable RAM does win 7 32-bit see?" and "How much RAM is left under Win 7 32-bit after shared RAM for the integrated graphics is set aside?" -
Hello guys,
i have been reading around 100+/- pages of this thread, checking whether this topic had been covered, but then i gave up. lol! my problem is, the aero W.E.I score for my u35j is only 4.0. Well, it goes the same for the rest of U35J owner right? However, i found that my friend have an Acer, with the spec slightly lower than mine (his= i5-450M while mine= i5-460M) achieved 5.0 score for aero. Both of us have nVidia 310M. Well, i know the W.E.I tend to be just an arbitrary no., but still, this is really annoying.. -
I'm pretty sure the 310m on the u35jc is underclocked. You can set it back to it's normal speed and you should get the same WEI rating. Just google - overclocking laptop graphics or overclocking 310m etc.
-
Mine is consistently 4.3... not 5, but not 4 either. Pretty sure the aero score is independent of the GPU (ie. uses intel gfx) which may account for the lower score
-
Well, actually i have done that already. I O/C the GPU to match the one that the Acer model had, and the no. still low behind..
Yeah, maybe that is the reason as the aero isn't too demanding. Therefore, it use the integrated intel graphic processor rather than nVidia. Well, any idea on how to force the system to use the 310M for the aero?
Anyway, thanks guys..

hi guys!
bought my housewife the U35JC..chose the model for its battery life as well as the dedicated graphics card with optimus.
however, my wife always complain why the laptop can't handle her facebook flash games..kinda laggy..is there any way i can turn on the 310 graphics instead of the intel hd when she plays games in facebook?
thanks! -
Firstly, congratulation for your choice!
Well, you can set it manually by going to nVidia control panel (right click at your desktop), then program setting, and choose nVidia GPU for the browser that she use.

Went ahead and ordered one of the 7400mha 12-cell batteries... should have it some time next week, will post my impressions and battery life. My only 'concern' is the increased angle of the laptop based on the bulkier battery (adds a 'bottom row' of battery)... worried it may prevent optimal viewing angle in my lap as I usually have it near full open... more to follow!
-
12-cell batteries surely will increase the laptop weight by some pounds.. Would appreciate it if you includes the weight too ^_^

There is a thread on overclocking the 310M HERE.
I'm not sure what clocks the Acer (model?) is set to but the 310M's DEFAULT speeds on my U30Jc are:
Core: 625
Memory: 790
Shaders: 1530
Try setting your 310M to those speeds and tell me what WEI score you get for the Graphics: Aero. Mine is 4.6 at my default speeds.
The WEI Aero score on the default 310M on the U35Jc should be 4.3. 3DMark06 should be about 3,400. Setting it at my default speed should give you a 4.6 in WEI Aero and 3,700 under 3DMark06.
The Aero Graphics score isn't just the IGP since those who increased their base clocks on the nVidia 310M INCREASED their scores on the WEI Aero.
Oh, and if you are actually getting "4.0" on your WEI Graphics: Aero score, then you may need to be sure:
1) You're not running the WEI test on battery nor any P4G battery saving mode. Only run it on High Power.
2) Run CPUID's CPU-Z. In the lower right, how many cores and how many threads does it list? It should read "Cores: 2" & "Threads: 4". Does it?
Or if you open Device Manager, in the list under "Processors", it should list your processor 4 times (4 threads). Does it? -
Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction please! This is starting to bug me! -
This may be way off the mark, but just in case ...
What are your settings for battery use in Power4Gear? (Right-click the battery/power icon in the lower right).
On Quiet Office & Battery Saving in the lower right of the P4G box (on battery), the "Hide Desktop Icons" (Quiet Office) & "Battery Saving Desktop" (Battery Saving) should read "No". Do they? -
Add about 50g per extra cell. should increase the weight by .4 lbs.
-
Already done that, and these are the results:
My 310M:
My WEI still stuck at 4.0:
My 3D mark seems to be slightly higher:
Well, you said that Aero score isn't just the IGP because you can increase the marks by O/C-ing your 310M, I think it does make sense. However, it seems that it does not work with me.
Answer:
1) Yes, I didn't do in on my battery and I'm sure that I done it on PG4 Performance mode.
2)Yes it does:
This is what I got for the Acer:
And I found something interesting. This is the details for both 310M :
ASUS U35J

System video memory: 0 MB
Shared system memory: 730 MB
Video BIOS version: 70.18.49.00.07

Seems that the U35J is using PCI express x8 rather that x16 in ACER whether both are the same model (nVidia 310M), does that in any sense can make any different for the performance?
And, what annoys me most is, the ACER is a lot more cheaper than U35J, yet it have better performance agains us :confused2:
Well, no significant weight added though. Thanks!

Has anyone tried succesfully to connect with the tv via HDMI?
I have an u45jc and I tried it and unfortunately no signal. I tried the latest drivers and the stock drivers. I used another laptop and that one worked.
Is the HDMI broken? Or is it the tv? Because the tv only supports 1024x768... -
You successfully connected the other laptop to the tv using that cable, therefore you can be pretty sure that the cable is fine. And i didn't think the resolution can cause that problem, you can adjust it anyway. Well, try to check your display setting, should find something there.
-
Will post the weight when I get it. Figure I will always travel with the factory battery, and only bring the big/heavy one when necessary... during trans-con flights and/or long periods away from power... so 'weight' isn't really an issue as I won't carry it unless I need to use both batteries.
-
nash 2.0, I think you're the only one getting 4.0 on your Aero part of the WEI test, so perhaps there is some other software factors affecting the test?
I wouldn't worry about it since your 3DMark06 score seems so good at 3883.
BTW, I noticed that your memory score is 5.5. Mine is 5.9 as yours should be. It should be the same speed & quality of RAM. Perhaps your reseller put in cheaper RAM on you? Can you pull your RAM and look at the specs? Can you try other RAM sticks in it?
I wouldn't place much faith or concern in the WEI score unless other, better benchmark scores were also not right.
What score does the Acer get on the 3DMark06? -
Well, it seems true that the only one facing this problem is me. It might because of software factors, I'll try to uninstall any possible software soon, and see how that may help. BTW, I'm using the latest driver (260.99) while the Acer using the older one, do you think that might be a factor?
Yes, the 3Dmark06 seems to be pretty good, but the WEI aero score keep haunting my mind. Lol! I think 4.0 doesn't make sense because my 2.5 years old Compaq Presario CQ50-104au with nVidia 2800M does have the same aero score too while having 3DMark06 of 1200 only
And, the different of the score is too much, don't you think so? 4.0 vs. 5.0. hmm~
This is the detail for my RAM:
How about yours?
Well, I don't have any extra DDR3 memory here, but I'm thinking of getting some Gb soon, let see if that can make a different. And, too bad that I'm on my holiday now, I'll do the benchmark for the Acer when I meet the owner soon.
If you noticed, the total available graphics memory on my 310M is 1717 MB (1024MB dedicated + 693MB shared) which is pretty high. I heard that an overwhelming video memory on a low-midrange graphics cards may decrease the overall performance as it have to cycle all over the large memory instead of the optimum amount of memory for the GPU. What do you think of this?
Try to look at this:
ASUS U35Jc Notebook Review | Blog - ScreenAid.com
This guy got 5595 for the U35J. Make sense?
-
Oh, that explains your lower memory score than me ... you have half the RAM! You have 2GB while most all of us have 4GB DDR3 1066 MHz SDRAM, 2 x SODIMM .
That may be what is pulling down your Aero score as well, since it may be puling on some of the shared memory as well. What speed of RAM do you have? Ours is DDR3 1066 MHz. Your listing of 548MHz makes it sound like you have DDR3 1096MHz RAM installed ... and since there is only 1066MHz or 1333MHz in the range, it must mean that your RAM is slightly overclocked. So I think your score is different because of half the RAM, but your 3DMark06 score is great because 3DMark is pulling on your dedicated VRAM istead of your limited system RAM.
Here are a couple of my CPU-Z screen shots:
-
Yes, seems that you figure it out! Well, the aero score must not only depends on the GPU only, instead it also related with the system RAM too. After I bought another piece of RAM, I'll try to make comparison.
It stated that you got dual channel for your RAM. Do you think it have significant boost if compared to my single channel (Let say both have 4Gb DDR3)?
Well, I think 1024Mb VRAM on my 310M does boost its performance for about 5- 7% if compared to the 512Mb VRAM on other 310M when O/C under same shader, memory and core clock.

The dual channel just means that both memory sticks are made by the same company with the same amount of RAM and the same speeds. Your would be dual too if you bought a matching stick of 2GB RAM (same company, speed & size).
The reviewer's score of 5595 on 3DMark (instead of everyone else's 3400+ on the U35Jc) just means he's not testing under 3DMark06, but an earlier version like 3DMark03.
It will be interesting to see you new WEI score once you increase your installed RAM to 4GB.
Let us know the score.
Your 3DMark06 scores are great and probably will not be affected much by the RAM increase ... but it will be interesting to see the 3DMark06 score for that as well (with the increased RAM). -
Regarding the dual channel, it just like what you said, both of the stick must be identical to each other in order to achieve it. Heard that it have some advantages compared to single channel, thought not much. Well, I'm thinking of adding 6Gb instead of another 2Gb (total 8Gb); if and only if it not exceed my budget. Lol! Let see how that may affect my overall WEI and 3DMark06 soon
-
So you're thinking of putting in a 6GB stick to go with the 2GB. Do they even sell 6GB as a single stick of PC3-8500 (1066MHz) RAM in your country? In the US, I don't see anything offered over 4GB at Newegg.
Whoa! Do you think 8GB will give you much benefit over 4GB? I suppose it depends on what you're running. If funds are limiting, you could throw in a 4GB stick for a total of 6GB or another 2GB for a total of 4GB.
Good luck and let us know how that works out!
BTW, what country are you in and what is the price difference between a 2GB 1066MHz and 4GB 1066MHz? When I was in Lebanon, if my RAM was new enough, my PC store would take back my extra stick of RAM if I wanted to buy 4GB and exchange the 2GB, and he'd give me a nice 30-40% discount on the 4GB stick.
Prices in the US for PC3-8500 (1066MHz) RAM are running about:
2GB - $30
4GB - $64
6GB - I don't see where they are even selling such a size. I only see 2GB & 4GB being sold. -
Yeah, I tried lowering the resolution 800x600 which seems to be the minimum. But I find it strange, it does not even detect the plasma screen which the other laptop did. But when the other laptop connected, the tv said it was 525p which means the resolution is actually even lower than the manual said?
Unfortunately, no neighbours or other tv's with HDMI to test it with. I guess, I will try the store and let them test it for me. -
Lol! I think nobody does sell 6Gb DDR3 as a single stick, my bad. Must be the effect of being too excited of getting more RAM
So, I'll just buy a 4Gb stick for now and maybe replace the 2Gb later if needed (so I can have a total of 8Gb).
Well, last night I tried to disable the paging file on my laptop. After around an hour using the laptop, I got a a message which stated that windows have to close some programs due to the lack of RAM. Therefore, I think my current RAM amount is too low. At idle, it showing that I am using only around 935Mb, yet I still got that message when I use it. Maybe because I lost some Gb as it being used as shared video memory (693Mb) on my 310M. I use a lot of Photoshop, video editing and gaming. Adding some extra memory could help, didn't you think so?
I live in Malaysia ( You know Petronas Twin Tower didn't you?) and I'm positive that the price here pretty high if compared to what you can find there. Well, as a comparison, a 2Gb kingston 1066 cost RM117 while 4Gb cost RM359; around $37 for 2Gb and $115 for 4gb (in USD). -
Ouch. The 4GB is a lot more than twice what the 2GB is!
Yes, don't disable your page file (virtual memory from the HDD) with only 2GB of RAM, especially if you run memory-intensive programs like Photoshop and the Intel IGP is taking shared RAM from your system too.
More memory will help you, even if it is 2GB more ($37 vs $115?!) -
I do it just to check whether my laptop really use the virtual memory; and it seems that it does use it a lot! Better get extra RAM quickly because HDD as a virtual memory surely will slow down the performance a lot.
You are saying that 2Gb should be good enough for my needs, didn't you? Well, I think so. Furthermore, I can save a lot of money
The price comparison seems to be ridiculous right? Well, that is the actual price. That might be caused by the tax etc. that we have to pay here quiet high that yours. -
Crazy isn't it? Most all of our memory is made in China, Taiwan or Korea so you'd think your prices would be at least as cheap as ours!
4GB total will make a real difference in your performance, especially with Windows 7 64-bit. If you feel you'd use the 6GB total, go for it, but I'm not sure how essential it is. -
Its far too crazy, lol! Most of us here can't get good PC components due to that fact. My U35J is around $956, and thats the cheapest that I can get around here.
Heard that (apparently a lot people) belief that product from China is low on quality. They give us low price but with penalty of low quality. Is it true?
Well, I think 4Gb total seems pretty good. Except for Photoshop, other system isn't that memory hunger at all. Installed and played Crysis - Warhead on my U35J just now, everything goes really smooth at 1366x768 mainstream setting and it uses only around 1.6Gb of my RAM
-
Ha, yeah right. We get the cheapest electronic goods in the world. Just because it's made in China don't mean it's cheap 'In China'. Cheap maybe, but not inexpensive. I was pretty surpised to find much of the stuff over there even more expensive after bargaining prices down with my wife driving @ them a true Mandarin-styled hard bargain. Even the counterfeit stuff has so many grades of quality ranging in the hundreds of dollars. They think all Americans are loaded and don't believe you when you tell them you can get the same sdhc card or processor for 70% of their lowest cost. Not to mention they seem to be about 6 months behind on a lot of the stuff we already have, (unless its a counterfeit). I've even thought about buying stuff here in the US wholesale and reselling it back in China each time I go there!
At Walmart about the only stuff that's cheaper there is food and chemicals. And, No, the clothing is about the same price as ours. Walmart in China is too expensive for anyone under the middle class. -
No problem here it all, I tried it when I had stock drivers/bios and with updated drivers/bios it still works flawlessly.
Questio: How do you guys capture pictures with the webcam? I've only used to capture some video using windows media encoder but there doesn't seem to be an option to just capture a photo. -
I can do it with ASUS LifeFrame3. Fn+V launches it (if you installed it) and the webcam & webcam light come on.
Look at the tools until you find the camera. Be sure your resolution is set to the highest (not great at 0.3MP, no matter what you try!).
Take a photo. It saves it in the gallery to the side. -
Yeah I uninstalled it, is there any other way?
-
Just reinstall it using asus utility > e-Driver
-
I think Skype also has that option to take a picture. Maybe other messengers such as live messenger can do it. Not sure though. I haven't found an option standard in windows unfortunately.
As for my HDMI problem, it seems to be the TV. I tried the TV's at the store where I bought it and there it works flawlessly. I guess the videocard is a bit picky about lower resolutions...
