What tv do you have? I'm thinking of connecting my U35J to my tv using hdmi too, hopefully it can work just fine. 13" display sometimes doesn't enough to give full experience for watching movies. Will test it after I got my HDMI cable.

I use the Samsung P2770HD HDTV monitor. My U30Jc runs it via my HDMI cable on 1920x1080. Very sharp image and color. No stutter on HD movies or streaming video.

I did need to set up my HDMI setting on my monitor to see the HDMI source as "PC" or "PC/DVI" for it to default to the HD resolution. But after that, it works perfectly every time.

The Samsung screen has a small amount of light bleed top & bottom, but nothing too extreme.

Be sure FIFA 11 is set up under the nVidia Control Panel to be run by "High Performance NVIDIA Processor". It may be defaulting to the Intel IGP and thus the stutter.

You should be able to run FIFA 11 on high detail.

    Hi,

Quick question for anybody who knows. Replacing the keyboard on a U35JC - I can't seem to find the replacement part anywhere. What I can find are keyboards for a UL30. I know the laptops share similar chassis, would the keyboards be compatible? cheers,

Anyone find any updated news regarding the newer 8.0.7.0 touch pad driver issues when waking up from sleep? I hate not wanting to put the laptop to sleep due to losing the added functionality. :(

Is this the owners forum thread for the u35jc?

Just put my order in for one today from J&R, should have it next week.

If anyone needs one there is an ASUS external DVD/CD burner (refurbished) for sale from newegg for $10 after rebate. I also picked one of those up today because of the cheap price, hopefully it works fine.

I have had that exact same DVD/CD burner for around 6 months. I also got it refurbished from newegg and it works wonderfully. I suppose this is the owners forum though i dont think it was ever made official. =)

Add "ANNIV39" code (exp. 19.nov!!!) to get 25$ gift card :p

    Hey I have a question.
JR site says: 2-Year Limited Global Warranty, 1-Year Accidental Damage
What does 2-year Global Warranty means? Is it inrenational or only for the united states?

You know, you could go back and re read the thread

you need to first download Asus newest bios which I think its 208 or whatever the latest is from their site

then after flashing your bios, go to nvidia and download the latest nvidia driver which I think its at 260 not sure so check.

if you go through mrrebates.com (3% cash back) and go to j&r's ebay store (2% ebay bucks) + CJANDR10 coupon code (10% off) you can get one for $640-650 (depending on the ebay buy-it-now price)

not sure if the coupon code still works but i picked one up using the above combo. and i got confirmation from mrrebates in less than a day.

    Hey guys!

Quick question, anyone else annoyed with the fact the media keys of the Asus U35JC opening up Media Center?

You would expect them to just hook into the API's and work with the open programs you're currently using to listen to music but they don't.

I've contact Asus about the issue and aparently they have no plans to make them work with any programs but Media Player and Media Center. This is just weird if you ask me.

Anyone else want to join me in pestering them until the change the code? Or anyone know how to fix the issue?
I can't find a program to change the hotkey assignments.

Since no-one replied to my question in the U30JC topic, i'll ask here.

Does anyone know why the U35JC performs less than the U30JC?

It has better processor and 1GBVRAM, im sure it should be higher in the 3DMark06 than the U30JC.

I think reading around, I found that the reason that the 3DMark06 was lower on the U35 was because it uses the same GPU at a lower clock. There are many threads in this section that give some insight on this, but that is what I found through my endeavors.

Because 3DMark06 is mostly doing its test based on the power of the GPU and the U35Jc's 310M is stock-clocked lower than the U30Jc's 310M.

So the U35Jc will net you around 3400 in 3DMark06 while the U30Jc gets you about 3700.

There are different guesses out there as to why the U35Jc's 301-M is clocked lower than the 310M in the U30Jc (some say different quality/speed of VRAM in the two units.)

    Make sense?

I think, the VRAM is of the same quality. The U35J does cost higher right? The U35J owner does have to pay more for the 1Gb VRAM. Maybe :p

Well, i think the reason might be for lower battery consumption.. U35J does have better processor which mean it might need more juice, therefore lowering the clock speed might help to reserve some power (ASUS claimed that U35J can reach around 11hours of usage, they just do it in order to fulfill their claim)

Moreover, U30 have better cooling solution than U35J (I have to admit it, because U35J does have air intake in the bottom, which not convenience if compared to U30), therefore they have to lower down the clock speed in U35J to reduce the temperature of the AGP.. When I O/C my U35J to match the stock clock speed of U3O, I found that mine have slightly higher temperature (with the advantage of better performance compared to U30 in 3DMark06). At max load, the 310M can reach until 86 degree Celsius (they have to do it in order to keep U35J as thin as possible which is <1", but with acceptable temperature; plus their claim of ice cool palm rest). What is your highest temperature Quatro?

Well, that's the trick, isn't it? The specs on VRAM are often not clearly stated. They tells us "DDR3" but nothing more. What speed of VRAM? What are its actual specs?

You're right that the U35Jc is thinner than the U30Jc and would affect heating/cooling ... that was another suggestion I've read repeatedly on why the U35 (and others latest 310M ASUS notebooks) has lowered GPU clocks.

But "highest temp" is relative. Depends on the temp of the room you're in, humidity level and what game you're playing and how long you've been running the unit in that room temp on that max.

Yeah, they didn't lie to us indeed. Instead, they rather choose not to tell, lol!
Furthermore, most people only concern about how much VRAM does it have, not the speed etc., especially noob; like me! LMAO.

I'm actually quiet interested in the cooling solution they put into U30. The lowest temp that i ever had with my U35J is 19 degree Celsius for the core, and 49 degree Celsius for GPU. Well, lets say Crysis-Warhead for 4 hours at 28 degree Celsius ambient temp, 94% humidity. So, whats yours?

    read this----> http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/490903-asus-u35jc-u45jc-284.html :)

However I compared it with an ACER, which appeared to perform better with lower spec and price. If you O/C the 310M on U35J to match U30Jc, it will perform better, but with higher temp penalty..

Well, 19C on the cores is incredible and 49C on the GPU is pretty good. I've never gotten my CPU down to 19C (I think).

I've been online now for about 3 hrs and doing various Office apps. No games or movies in that time.

HWMonitor 1.16 tells me my cores are about 34C and my GPU is 44C.

It sounds like the higher temp penalty on your small o/c is fairly minor. I wouldn't worry about it.

BTW, the Acer I would have liked was the 3820TG ... but it wasn't for sale in the US. Some were buying it from China!

But the 3820TG with it's ATI 5650HD is over TWICE as fast a GPU as the 310M and very overclockable (many were getting OVER 9,000 on the 3DMark06 benchmark). But the battery is smaller and so less battery life. That can be fixed with an extra battery though.

So Nash2.0, have you gotten that extra memory yet? Any improvement?

Got the battery today... weight: 20.9 Oz (vs 15.2 for the original). Doubles the height of the battery but fit is still good and the angle of the monitor works fine... actually like the angle of the keyboard better! Will get batterymon numbers in the AM... but initial charge showed 11hrs remaining on the std windows battery when full using the quiet office mode.

Mine normally should have around 28C for the core and 50C for GPU when I do similar task like you mention before.

Yeah, 3820TG does offer superb performance compared to what we got now. Me myself actually quiet jealous to those who have it, lol! 9000+ of 3DMark06 score really amazing. However, I keep reminding my self that ASUS does offer better battery life and build quality :D

Well, not yet. Now I'm having my examination for this semester, so I guess I'll get it later when I'm done with all this. I'll post the result in this thread when I got it.

BTW, watch this----> http://www.youtube.com/user/apple?blend=1&ob=4#p/c/E48006996BE7C234/0/GSWQdYq3qcU. How about putting some nice SSD and 6cell / 4cell battery (is there any?) on U35J, it should reduce some weight, and the battery life should be almost the same like Macbook Air; or better (due to the fact that SSD consume less battery). Without the bulky 8cell battery, U35J weight actually incredibly light..

Typically, while typing text in any box, pressing the "Insert" key will not be noticed as it affects what happens to the text in FRONT of the cursor.

If you place your cursor in the middle of a sentence, one press to the 'Insert" key causes each letter typed to REPLACE the letter in FRONT of it. Press the "Insert" key again and it goes back to normal (inserting letters & words between text.)

If you read thru the forum you pretty much got it and shouldn't need to ask the question... there is alot of info on this :) The U35JC does have an 'issue' that most believe is because of the CPU. In certain applications/settings there is a very high pitched whine coming from the bottom left corner (ie near the z key). The sound is intermittent and variable in tone and rare (for me)... and seems to bug folks based on their sensitivity to very high pitched tones. This appears to affect all manufacturers using this CPU. I can hear it at times but only in a nearly silent environment... and it doesn't bug me much. My guess is you hear it precisely because the laptop is so quiet otherwise!

will try to post pix later today... one 'interesting' thing I found: Using BatteryMon it doesn't seem to be the appropriate capacity. The stock battery shows: 8400 mWh and 5250 mAh for 8 cell... the new one shows: 9900 mWh and 6187 mAh for 12 cell?? seems way off... so, figure one of three things is true:
    1) got ripped off and the case doesn't have 12 cells
    2) cells used are less efficient than the stock ones
    3) battery mon is giving me bogus data??

Any clue how to tell w/o breaking the case open? weight seems suspect since the new one is only 1/4 heavier than the old one (vs 1/3)... 20.9 oz vs 15.2 oz...

Got some tips for you. Put your U35J under battery saving mode, and set intel graphic processor as default for whatever you want to run in it. This way should keep your unit really cool, thus the fan should run pretty slow and produce less noise. Belief me, you'll barely able to hear any sound from that unit :D (assuming your unit isn't defective :p )

I choose no. 2! Lol! Where you bought that 12-cell battery? Well, some aftermarket products does perform less efficient than stock products, depends on which company build it.

    Have you tried BatteryBar?

Got the battery on ebay... $61.99 shipped, which is actually cheaper than the stock battery replacement. Wrote the seller about the issue as they advertise it as a 7800mAh battery. Will report what they say... don't want to post their name/link until I get resolution. To be honest, I am OK with it as a 6600 mAh battery as that is still 20% higher than the stock one (oddly batterymon's assessment of the total capacity changed to 6600 mAh but still says 9900mWh).

I'd doubt option #3. You can also double-check the figures with the free BatteryBar. I think you'll find they give you the same reading.

Your reading & weight sounds more like it's actually a 10-cell disguised as a 12-cell. I bought one from China that was like that once.

Oh well, it's still a better battery (10-cell 99Wh) then the factory 8-cell 84Wh one.

You might be cheated, like quatro said;10-cell disguised as 12-cell. 20% increase of battery life doesn't look right for upgrading from 8-cell to 12-cell.

BTW, Quatro, I just realized that the VRAM on my unit DOES have a lot SLOWER memory clock that U30J. Mine can go for maximum of 800MHz only! It just like what you said, ASUS put slower and cheaper VRAM in this unit. How foolish am I for not realizing this earlier, lol! :D

Still remember about the ACER that i mentioned before? It is actually ACER 4741G, which having nvidia 310M, WITHOUT optimus! 3DMark06 on that unit is 3857, and its having the standard 310M, not the underclocked one like mine. The absent of optimus does explain why we got lower aero score. From my observation, during the benchmarking of W.E.I aero score, 310M doesn't kick in all the time (monitored using nvidia tools). I've tried to disable 310M and carried out W.E.I, and it shows 3.9 for aero.

The 10 vs 12 cell is exactly what I suspect as well... wrote the seller and asked, and will post the reply. As I said earlier, actually still happy with the product and may have purchased for this price as a 6600mAh battery, but a bit upset about the false advertising if that is the case.

I was writing a paper last week and tried it to write over incorrect text that I had typed and it didn't work. I tried pressing ctrl+insert and lots of other combinations but nothing worked (I did find out that pressing 'shift+insert' is another option to paste.) Don't know if it's just me or if anyone else has experienced this.

I take back what I said. I did as you (what I had said), and nothing happened. The Insert key is presently a dead key.

Really odd. What I said *is* what the insert key used to do.

But you're right, it presently does nothing.

Let's google about the insert key and see what we find.

    Here's what Wiki says:
"The Insert key (often abbreviated INS) is a key commonly found on computer keyboards.

It is primarily used to switch between the two text-entering modes on a personal computer(PC) or word processor. The first is overtype mode, in which the cursor, when typing, overwrites any text that is present on and after its current location. The other is insert mode, where the cursor inserts a character at its current position, forcing all characters past it one position further. The insert/overtype mode toggling is not global for the computer or even for a single application but rather local to the text input window in which the Insert key was pressed."

Yep. They agree with me ... but our ASUS insert keys don't do that. They don't appear to do anything. Very odd.

Oh. I may have found the answer. Word 2007 turns the Insert Key OFF on purpose. Here are three interesting links on it:
Why doesn't my "ins" key work?

Insert key safely disarmed in Microsoft Word 2007

How To Enable Insert Key In Microsoft Word 2007, Word 2010

Following these, I could cause the Insert Key to work again properly (toggle overwrite) in Word & Wordpad, but not Notepad.

    Google is our friend ...

If you go through airport screening by any chance this weekend, ask the screener to tell you how many cells show up on the xray. With batteries, 95% are from China and that's not good news for you.

The bottom line is what the Wh and mAh reported for the battery after a full charge a few times.

They advertised it as 7800mAh and the two battery gauges show it as 6600mAh.

BTW, HERE is an eBay sale on a 12-cell 6600mAh battery for $62 out of China.

They DO list it as a 6600mAh battery like shotgunb's.

Looking at eBay, it seems there are LOTS of 12-cell 6600mAh batteries for sale for the U35Jc. Perhaps the 7800mAh listing was a simple mistake. For shotgunb's price, the others all list theirs as "12-cell 6600mAh". I don't see any listed as 7800mAh. Perhaps they've corrected it now?

Yeah, most of the batteries does come from China, which have lower quality and less efficient (but they offers much lower price). However, mine stated the cell made in Japan and assembled in Taiwan, which I belief should be better than China made.

When I got my unit, it shows that I have 0% battery wear, which is the opposite from what I heard from other owners (if I'm not mistaken). How about yours (everyone in this thread)?

BTW, can anyone tell me what does your stock HDD volume that you can actually use? Mine only showing 446Gb (System) + aother 20Gb (that is hidden by default for the backup). The amount of volume that I lost is way too much. Is this normal? Or am I the only one having this problem?
