YouTube - Asus U36, U31 and U41 hands on
A quick hands on with the new Asus notebooks.
And the U31/U41 have the newer nvidia GPU (GT 415M)![]()

the u36jc looks almost perfect - is Asus likely to bring out a U46jc or similar - ie specs as per the us36jc but a 14" screen?
I ultimately want a really light laptop to travel with maximum battery life (I as I will need to travel with it). I want USB3.0. I don't need an optical drive - happy to substitute that with a second HDD. so the u36jc is perfect other than the screen size - i fear the 13.3" screen will be too small. -
I changed the setting on battery saving mode so that the screen does not darken for 5 minutes - but now the screen appears to be changing brightness up and down all the time while I am using the computer or when I am reading something that is on the screen and not moving the mouse. Any ideas?
-
U45jc-a1 came with ddr3 1333 but specs say diffrent.
Why did my U45jc-a1 come with ddr3 1333? Everywhere I look it says that they come with 1066 but I opened it up and the ram says 1333?
Also in CPU-Z it says my bandwidth is 10700 for the ram.
Does the u45jc support ddr3 1333? Will it down clock to 1066 or run at 1333?
Thanks
-Michael -
can it handle 8 gigs of ram?
-
Look in you advance power saving settings. Each power saving mode has its own settings including how long until the screen dims, what the screen brightness is set to on each mode, how long until the screen goes dark.
You can do a lot via P4G but there are even more options on the advanced settings under Power Options. -
Your memory is running down clocked to 1066.
The reason your laptop came with 1333 is the world wide supply of 1333 ram is much better than 1066 ram, so the pricing that Asus pays is better. Asus will buy which ever is cheapest.
You can't really benefit from the extra speed as the CPU only works up to the 1066 speed. -
i'm having different issues with p4g, my screen never dims or turns off. when i change the power settings to one of the windows default ones, the screen does turn off, but when i return from sleep or hibernate or restart, p4g takes over again and my screen never turns off...
i'm going to try reinstalling p4g but i'm wondering why crap like this even happens in the first place... -
Looks to be it can.
-
No idea, but when you get into the advanced settings, there are a number of sub-category settings to tweak the P4G power "templates"/modes as well.
So your default Windows power modes do turn off the screen eventually. You just need to check the P4G modes. Even in P4G, each setting has a GUI bar for setting the "Turn off display" time. But under "Advanced Settings" you find even more options under "Display" for each of the power saving modes. -
reinstalling didn't work. and the windows power modes work only if i manually select it (and not one of the p4g modes) and yes, the advanced settings are all set to turn off but do not work.
looks like i'll have to live without p4g. -
hi guys. im buying a u45jc. any known problem for this model? i see most websites review on the i3 version, not the i5 version.
-
The battery of my U53JC has a small move. Seams that is not very well fixed.
This movement is not very large but is terribly annoying.
Is the same to yours UCJ ?
Thanks -
I'd be interested to hear how your battery life is without P4G... would show how necessary it is.
-
My batteries fit very tightly (have two... standard 8 cell and a 12 cell). Make sure you lock the tab on the bottom of the laptop. There are two tabs, one is spring loaded, the other is not. The non-spring loaded side is made to lock the battery in place and it might move a bit without the lock engaged. With the lock engaged mine is very solid with no movement at all.
Side note: I have used the 12 cell for quite a bit now. More bulky/heavy than the 8 cell, and definitely would travel/commute with the 8 if I only needed one battery, but I LOVE the angle of the keyboard with the 'step-up' angle caused by the extra row on the 12 cell battery. For someone that uses it mostly at home (ie. weight/bulk are not a big issue) it is awesome and adds just the right angle on the keyboard to greatly increase my speed/comfort typing. -
I know about that two tabs ... both of them are in lock position but still I have that small move ...
The notebook was in Asus service from his first day because my touchpad doesn't wark.
After i took it from Asus I saw that movement but I was not sure if this was before.
I did'nt have chance to work with this device only for few hours ...
-
Sorry to hear it, I have been very fortunate with mine and have had no issues. I would definitely send it back and not accept the problem. May want to send the battery back as well in case the problem is the groove/latch on the battery itself (may want to check the grooves on the battery for any damage). Good luck!

Here is the fix that sets Processor Idle Promote Threshold to 100% - as the result there is no high pitched noise.
1. Open regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\7b224883-b3cc-4d79-819f-8374152cbe7c
2. Set 'Attributes' value with 0
3. Go to "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options" and click on "Change plan settings" on your plan, then 'Change advanced power options'
4. Go to "Processor power management\Processor idle promote threshold" and set value with 100%
Sometimes it needs to change to another power plan and go back to the main.
Hope it helps. All credits go to middleton from forum.ixbt.com
UPDATE:
Also, there is another additional option:
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\4b92d758-5a24-4851-a470-815d78aee119 and set 'Attributes' value with 0
You will notice "Processor Idle Demote Threshold" option under "Processor power management". Try to experiment with this value from 5-40%. -
Well, the side effect of that change is temperature growth by about 6 degrees C and battery life decrease by about 20%.

Hey y'all just wondering what times are you clocking when you have your PC set to high performance. Id be running Opera/FF w/ maybe 6 tabs, and running Photoshop or Illustrator and I don't think I can hit 3 hours. Your scores for this situation or any situation under High performance would be appreciated.

hi all,
now i'm using windows xp in u35jc, i was install xp driver for u35f and it work, the problem is i can't find nvidia graphic driver that support xp in u35f because it doesn't have nvidia. i was download it from nvidia official web but when i install it, error message come.
please help me if anyone know where to download and install it..many thanks.. -
This may sound silly to most, but i would like a lighter, slimmer battery for my new u35jc-xa1. Don't care if i lose a few hours.. reducing weight is a priority. anyone have a part number of a battery that would be compatible?
thank you -
Use of the nVidia GPU will shrink your battery life way down.
Browsers can run easily on the Intel HD IGP and even stream videos.
If Photoshop is triggering the nVidia GPU to come on, your battery life will substantially decrease.
You can use nVidia Control Panel to set up various browsers & programs to use the Intel HD IGP where you can.
Setting the processor to high performance will greatly reduce your battery life. That's why there's a battery saving mode (but the penalty is a slower processor. ... you just can't have it both ways.) -
how to activate scroll on touchpad?
anyway.. my fn-f9 shortcut to activate/deactivate touchpad is not working
-
Make sure you have the latest touchpad driver installed. You can access the touchpad properties via the touchpad control panel (should be installed by the driver) or via the mouse control panel. On the mouse control panel there should be a tab at the end that had the elan (red e) symbol on it. Click on properties, and it should bring you to a page that allows you to select/deselect and alter all of your mouse gestures, to include scrolling. Hit apply and you should be good to go!

I think you nailed it on the head quatro.... the whole point of the Optimus and P4G/multi-step processor is to automate the ability to minimize 'wasted power' so that you can maximize battery life. Running in 'max performance' when not needed or using the NVidia processor when not needed doesn't improve the using experience... it just decreases battery life. I absolutely find instances where max power is necessary... but only select it when I experience lagging or slow down. As far as answering the battery life question... I went on a 'hulu-fest' one day a few months ago and used my laptop on max settings streaming wifi via my HDMI to my LCD TV. Worked flawlessly and I got over three and a half hours (four hour long TV episodes) and still was in the 10%+ range on battery life. So I would guess between 3 1/2 and 4 hours with everything maxed out... which is actually pretty awesome!
-
You may want to reinstall your ATK drivers. There's A "ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities" Version V1.0.0005 over on the ASUS driver site. It's 9MB and is several ATK drivers bundled. (There are 6 different ATK-related drivers listed over on the U30Jc page.) Be sure all are installed.

what is possible asus give us xp driver for u35jc ??
i think windows xp is still very comfort to use, light and fast.
if anyone know download link xp driver for u35jc, can u tell me ??thanks hehe..
i'm sorry if my english is bad, still study in english. i'm from indonesia.. -
thx guys. got it. wat should i do with this new laptop?
-
man, i looked everywhere but i still can't find version 8 of the elan touchpad driver... anyone knows where to look?
-
I got the u45jc
Hey guys would you say its better to take off the battery if you have it plugged in?
Also, entertainment mode always as oppose to battery saving mode right?
And should i ever go to battery saving mode? If so, what kind of things should i be doing where i do go to battery saving mode.
Also, how do you turn off the WIFI?
And where do you guys leave the brightness? Do you max it out or put it somewhere in the middle or the lowest? -
Congrats on the laptop drew. Not certain where you heard 'always entertainment mode'... I actually use 'quiet office' most of the time and see a marked improvement on battery life over entertainment. Quiet Office defaults 6=7to '8' on brightness which works for me... tend to get 6=7 hours off the battery with wifi on this way. Battery saving definitely gives met the best battery life and I usually default to that while working on airlines... default to entertainment when I watch movies on flights. Really all boils down to personal preference... if battery life is REALLY important, you want to default to the slowest/dimmest that meets your needs. If you are plugged in or battery life is not relevant, then you can go with the highest power setting/brightness you desire
-
There is no owner's lounge for U35?
-
No reason to take the battery out when plugged in.
Use whatever mode you want. When I am unplugged I am always in battery saving mode and never have an issue. You can adjust the settings for each mode independently and save them so they fit your liking.
To turn off the WiFi - Control Panel - Network and Internet - Network and Sharing Center - Change Adapter Settings (left side) - right click - disable
I'm sure there is an easier way but that will work for sure until someone else chimes in. -
does anyone knows what easy overclock mode in bios is for? my bet is for i5 and i7 right?
-
I must be missing something. Doesn't a simple Fn+F2 turn the WiFi on & off?
-
hey man, don't poke fun, I said there had to be an easier way
-
hello all
just curious as to what kind of temperatures fellow U43JC users are getting
my temps:
Board:
Idle: 45 celcius
Work: 60 celcius
Cores:
Idle: 37 celcius
Minimal work: 55 celcius
Gaming: 80(ish) celcius
GPU: stupid program not picking it up right now -
The reason behind taking out the battery when it's already fully charged is because once plugged in, the computer will periodically try to charge the battery. This periodic attempt can decrease battery life in the long run and is recommended for people who plug their laptop in for extended amount of time.
I've been doing it, personally, but i'm starting to think that unless you are going to leave it plugged in for at least a day, don't bother removing the battery. the effects are probably very small otherwise. -

I ended up buying the Asus U35J from Micro Anvika and it arrived yesterday.
I only used it for about 30-45 mins but it had a noticeable blueish tinge to the screen. As I've never used a LED LCD before, it could be possible that this is due to the backlight, but surely it shouldn't affect the colour in this way?
Assuming it's not faulty (don't know yet), I will try using some calibration software (is it adobe?) but before that I am going to reinstall windows 7 from scratch.
Has anyone else had blueish tinge with their displays? It's quite noticeable where the background is meant to be white. I plan on using this screen for some photo work, and I know it's not an ideal screen (not a IPS LCD etc) for this type of work, but would like it to at least show colours accurately. -
Have had mine for months and all colors appear accurate, but I don't necessarily have a trained eye. I have played Netflix via HDMI several times and the image on the monitor looks great/accurate and is virtually identical to the image on my Sony HDTV (color wise). Definitely no noticeable blue tinge
-
nobody????????
-
Yes, there is a blue tint. I think it's the screen overlay. You can see the effects from an angle. The best I've managed to do is go straight to windows Calibrate Color under Display in Control Panel... Hit next until you get to the color slider and for blue, use a mouse with a roller. Click on the blue once to choose it, then use the mouse roller and roll it down by 12 clicks. Then roll the RED down 1 click.
For this exercise, the gray values will give you the most indication what color cast it's veering towards. Just remember, there should be no color in gray
I am a professional photographer, so my eyes are very sensitive to this.
The best color reproduction screens I own are from my two Dell Laptops. They are manufactured by Philips... Model variants, Inspiron 1440, 1464, 1564, and E5410.
Let me know if the color correction trick works. I ended up uninstalling the provided asus app that lets you adjust screen color modes, quite frankly it sucks. -
Thanks for your replies shotgunb and djklmnop.
Sorry, when I say it's noticeable, it's not like it's full on blue - just that there is a slight colour cast and where a colour should be pure white it isn't. It doesn't matter so much when using it for office work/surfing/videos etc but for photos (amateur photographer) it does when trying to match onscreen to print.
I will try djklmnop's suggestion and report back. -
Definitely interested in hearing how it works out... tired the tool myself and still don't see a blue cast... but I could just not be as sensitive to it.

Hmmm, I've been getting ~5 hours of light usage time and this seems to differ greatly from all the others claiming 7 - 8.
I'm currently using batterybar and my discharge rate is ~16,000 mWh with SHE on. Can anybody else post their discharge rate? -
I had this problem and it had to do with enabling "Listen to this device" in the Sound/Microphone properties in order to get rid of cpu whine or something. Did you do anything related to that?
I couldn't figure out what the culprit was and just did an OS restore since it was only a few days after I got it. The battery life came back and I went back to getting about 8 hours on a charge. I actually found out this was the culprit when I enabled it one day and checked my battery life.
I hope this is what is causing your issue! If not, you can always try an OS restore.
My discharge rate is about 6-8,000 at idle and 10-13,000 when browsing the web. -
Are you modifying your settings in SHE? I have Minimum CPU 5% and Maximum 20%. Let it idle with wifi off and it should run at around 8,300 mWH on battery bar. I also noticed that it takes at least 5 full charge cycles before the battery wear and accurate reporting kicks in. Mine fluctuated from 2.9% to 1.8% battery wear and now it's leveling off at 2.0%.
Secondly, do you have a lot of background services running? Download HiJackThis and make sure nothing unnecessary is running.
