Ghost! It sounds like you really need a laptop so buy the UL30VT-X1/A1!! The JT's performance will not be worth the wait! Go ahead and purchase an X1 and pick up a SSD + External case for the internal drive, and enjoy an INCREDIBLY fast laptop for a steal. The JT's gaming performance won't even be 10% higher than the VT's based on all of the benchmarks I have seen - the reason to wait would be these non-existant CULV I7's - and that will be a somewhat minimal performance boost as well. Not to mention with this new hardware the JT is going to cost A LOT more!

What do you think of the X1 so far?? I have been debating seriously between the X1 and A1 for a few days, and I can't make up my mind! Is the black as bad with fingerprints as everyone says?

Man.. if the made X1 in SILVER I'd already bought it.. It has better wi-fi and smaller HDD.. therefore lower price for pretty much the same thing. And also.. it is actually IN STOCK..

But.. the actual BLACK X1 material... which is kinda cheap black plastic and black aluminium.. is just AWFUL..

What do you think they will cost though, close enough to the ULV Core 2's to keep them close to $800?

And don't you think its strange that Asus has made no comments about the JT since CES?? My money is that it won't be out until summer, and it'll cost a bundle.

I guess you haven't had the chance to see both versions in person? The black aluminum top looks rather classy IMO. There's a kind of subtleness in the black compared to the silver that can't be properly conveyed in words... But if you open them up, the silver might a slight edge over the black. Its personal taste, but if you have the opportunity to check them out in person, you'll get a better opinion of the colors.

I made my comparisons on the UL30 series in a local store. I felt the black looked better overall; and given the early A1 issues, I decided to buy an X1 last week.

I find that notebook check has good raw information, but I don't trust their gaming benchmarks. They are usually inacurate

I think he's commenting on the fact that the black casing attracts finger prints like hell. You can see that in the picture he posted. I like black better as well but if it's going to be a finger-print magnet inside and outside then I'll just have to go with silver.

I'm also waiting in this mysterious Asus UL30JT unless someone else can come along with something better. For people looking for the i7-640UM I've only been able to find it in 1 laptop Fujitsu P770.

    http://store.shopfujitsu.com/fpc/Ecommerce/buildseriesbean.do?series=P770

I almost pulled the trigger on this one, but I really want something with switchable graphics.

Quick question...I've never done any notebook modding before, but if I found a notebook with nvidia optimus, and it had an appropriate chipset would it work to just swap the older CULV processor with one of the new Arrandale chips?

They're comparing 512MB GPUs. The JT's 310M will have a full GB and I would expect Asus to boost clock speeds to give slightly better performance than a stock 310M.

I clearly doubt that will be possible. Even though the sockets will be compatible the mobile CPUs are usually soldered to the socket which makes a exchange almost impossible.

xAdonis, I would volontary go with an actual model, but I think I'm going to regret it once the JT will come out. I don't buy a laptop for one or two years, I'm buying an ultraportable for at least 4 years ... Performance doesn't matter me, it's the fact that the platform is brand new, more futureproof.

I'd go with a VT-A1, but the poor Atheros wireless card reputation makes me scared. The X1 seems better on that point, but comes with less battery life, the principal characteristic I'm looking on a laptop, and black case, which attracts fingerprints.

Sure, I'm going to add an Intel low-power SSD such as the x25-V series :D On which laptop, I don't know :p

I haven't been able to find any ul30's locally. I thought the X1 was an Amazon exclusive notebook. Where were you able to compare the two, I may have to go compare them in person.

I have seen the ul50 and I thought the black looked ok, but I haven't been able to find a silver finish to compare to.

Bronksy, 1GB of Video memory vs 512GB of Video memory isn't much of a difference performance wise. It will be able to handle higher resolution/more screens slightly better and thats about it. You would only see a difference if we were comparing high end video cards, where we could enable AA/AF at 4k resolutions if we had more memory.

and i believe thats part of the problem. There are people here on this forum who do infact want a laptop capable of doing some light gaming here and there while being at a small size. The above lenovo laptop doesn't do that which is a shame.

It seems there are two Atheros cards that have shipped with the UL30VT-A1s, although they are both the same model. Early units have a card that has two antenna sockets, but only one antenna; later units shipped with a single socket card. The later units seem to have no problems with wifi at all, and it's not clear that even all the 2 socket cards are problematic. In short at this date your chances of getting a "bad" wifi card are extremely small, but even if you did the Intel Wifi Link 1000 that comes in the X1 is only $25 delivered from Beach Audio.

I hear ya there. Those thinkpads were unfortunately aimed towards the business crowd. If they can rearm those puppies with a 330m or 335m or a 5730 and gear it towards the general consumer then I think lenovo has a winner on their hands.

Tigerdirect Canada is generally overpriced with everything. We can get the Asus UL30VT-A1 for 879.99 canadian + 13% tax.

But even then, 1 USD = 1.05456 CAD so Canadians usually still get an inflated base price.

On what do you base yourself to say that ... ? Real sources or speculations ?

On Amazon, UL30A-A2 would be only 700 $ US ? Is that possible ? Does it still have Wi-Fi problems ? Now I know there's almost no danger regarding the VT-A1, but now what about the A-A2 ?

your call really. as someone mentioned earlier, the price for the vt right now is really good. You can expect of course the jt to be less of a fingerprint magnet and will host better performance, but are you willing to set aside that it will be more expensive? As i said. you call ;d

LOVE it! If it only had a backlit keyboard I'd rate it 10/10, as is it's a 9/10; faster than you'd ever think from just reading the specs, really nice looking, good build quality and the silver does not show fingerprints. Battery life is an honest 8-10 hours, the screen is exceptionally clear and bright, I replaced the stock HD with a WD 320 7200RPM and the thing screams, stays entirely cool, and plays WoW at least as well as my U20V-B2, which specs better on paper.
