haha, a 4 GB video memory is a little absurd. But maybe that's supposed to be 4 GB memory, which is excellent for Windows 7

Did some more digging on the energy star site and found this interesting:

    UL30VT Market Date = 11.11.2009
    Amazon Sell Date = 11.19.2009 (X1) and 12.30.2009 (A1)

    UL50VT Market Date = 10.09.2009
    Amazon Sell Date = 10.18.2009

    etc etc..

    UL30JT Market Date = 03.01.2010
Amazon Sell Date = one week later?? :D :D

Man, what happened to the Asus press conference, only some netbooks[really nice ones] and the larger versions. No UL's in sight or is the more to come?

They're probably saving the best for last. On saturday they will be like, "by the way, the Asus UL30JT will be on sale and shipping starting...NOW" :)

    ...I can dream no?

The matte finish, the Core i7 or i5, and the 7200 RPM HDD really make this worth the wait.

Just hope it comes with a better screen, touchpad and USB 3.0.

USB 3.0...USB 3.0 this is all I read. Who the hell really cares about freaking USB 3.0. I hope to God it isn't in the JT30, so all the people on here will cry and make it easier for me to nab a JT.

Don't you need USB 3.0 devices for it to work too?

Meaning that your video camera, external hard drives, mp3 player, phone and so on, wont be faster if they are not USB 3.0 either!?

Yes.. your devices will need to support USB3.0 as well. The only thing devices that will be jumping ship to USB 3 will be things like hard drives and eventually video cameras, since the content of each will be massive, so the effect will be noticable.

Mass adoption of usb3.0 will take awhile, though.

You do. But I plan to put a SSD in the laptop when I get it so any improvements to the transfer speed will be welcome for when I attach an external drive. e-sata would allow that too but USB 3 will be more versatile in the long run.

For me it isn't make or break, bit it's a nice to have.

Hah.. M11x is not competitor to UL30Vt or Jt...

The Asus is not a gaming laptop, it has bigger screen, it is thinner and lighter, it has way longer battery life. It's just focused on different part of the market. I just ordered UL30Vt and the ugly "Dell" M11x piece of crap wouldn't make me happy at all.. Gaming on 11,6" screen... what a joke.

worst comes to worst... usb 3.0 adapters will come out, because almost EVERYONE has usb 2.0

its not like usb 1.0, because 100000x more people have computers with usb 2.0 rather than usb 1.0

USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with 2.0 (aka no need for an adapter).

Unless I read that wrong, and you are trying to make a USB 2.0 port into a 3.0 port, which is impossible.

Yep, you heard that right, USB 3.0 is completely backwards compatible just plug any USB 2.0/1.0 device in and you are set to go!

+1 on the hopeful March 8th release day (March 1 + one week amazon)

But the M11x isn't the same CPU, is it? M11x has the SU7300, whereas the 30JT will apparently have the more powerful i7. The 310m may be the bottleneck with the 30JT, but isn't the M11x seriously bottlenecked by the SU7300?

Is the i7 in the JT going to be a ULV version of it? If it is, what sort of performance difference can we expect from a normal i7 processor? Or better yet, how much better than let's say a P8700 c2d processor?

Performance wise, can the UL30JT be comparable to a Vaio Z with standard specs??

I have been waiting for the refresh of MBP for ever and frankly, I am losing my patience...

All of the UL series have had ULVs, so that's what you'd expect this time as well.

Because of their low voltages and hence clock speeds, the Core i7 ULVs will be slower than the P8700, but only by a little bit.

Revising my guesses suggests that was too optimistic; the i7-640UM w/ Turbo Boost reaches around 1.867GHz, which ought to be close to a Penryn chip at around 2GHz, though for some of the tasks that Core i does well, it might perform like a Penryn closer to 2.3GHz. Faster than the P7350, but I guess we've yet to find out by how much.

However, the LV (not ULV) i7-620LM should Turbo Boost up to 2.53GHz; at that speed it ought to be faster than the P9600 overall.

As long as the price is below $950 and there is at least a 20% performance increase over the VT, i'll be buying the JT asap  :D .

Although, the VT-A1 for $799 now at Amazon is quite tempting..

Considering that the SU7300 is clocked at 1.3GHz while the Core i5-520UM, with two cores, covers 1.067-1.6GHz with Turbo Boost, and the Arrandale architecture is faster clock-for-clock than Penryn, I'd say things are looking good there.

After years of only limiting myself to look at brands such as Sony, Apple etc. I am surprised by the awesome prices and warranty of brands like Asus and Thinkpads (Lenovo)...

For example with the UL or even the N61, G51 machines, how is the performance per dollar ratio so high comparing to laptops like the Apple, Sony... I understand the brand name...but is it worth that much?

Back in the days, they used to say that the quality, fit, and finish of their laptops are superior but after examining the UL series for example, it's as solid if not more than a Vaio computer...

...Seriously considering the JT once it comes out...

I am getting mixed dates for the release of the JT, some say this weekend while others say end of the year. What can we expect?

Just curious, what kind of performance gain cpu wise can I expect by using a Core i7 ULV vs. my current AMD Turion x2 Ultra dualcore in the HP DV3?

That depends on which X2 Ultra; but based on Notebookcheck the i7 ULVs will in fact be about the same as an X2 Ultra. If you're mostly looking for performance, you won't want a ULV; they're mostly about battery life.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I doubt that the build quality will match up to a good Vaio, maybe the budget series but definitely not the more expensive ones.

As for the release date, all we can do is hope that Asus says something this week during CeBIT. I hope tomorrow I will wake up to epic news from Asus. :D

??? The i7-640UM Turbo Boosts to 2.26GHz. And the i7-620LM goes up to 2.8GHz.

Those are the boost values for when it's operating on only one core; the dual-core boost is more useful for an overall judgement of performance.

    I mean.. cant you see...????

If they "Asus" can put it in a Eee pc & there other new laptops.... then why not on UL30JT which is a BRAND NEW Laptop...??? :realmad:

I'm fine with USB 2.0 for two reasons:

    1) It will probably be 2 or 3 years (or more) before USB 3.0 becomes mainstream.
    2) I will be using my UL30JT for at least 3 years, and by then I will probably be in the market to upgrade and purchase a new laptop again that will have USB 3.0 for sure AND be useful for me at that time.

If I were planning on keeping the UL30JT as my main computer for the next 5+ years, then the lack of USB 3.0 would be a deal breaker.

If there was a competing laptop with the same specs and USB3, I'm sure most people would go for that over the UL30JT. However, I don't see any coming up. USB3 isn't going to be that important for some time yet.

Guys, USB 3.0 will become mainstream next year in Intel based systems. The Huron River Platfom (Sandy Bridge cpu's) will feature USB 3.0 and Sata 6GBs. So maybe you guys should wait for that UL30? Seems like Huron River will have a lot more goodies over Arrandale. Due out Q1 2011 (CES 2011?) ;)

Some PL differences explained at Notebookitalia, including Lojack and Inte Anti-Theft included on them.
