But wait doesn't the UL30VT-A1 have 12 hours and the UL30JT a lower 10 hours?

They are low end business laptops from Dell. They seem to look decent but they're not really competing with the UL30VT/JT since they use standard voltage CPUs and are thicker/heavier.

The old Dell Vostros were great workhorses. I still have the original Vostro 1500 I bought in service with my bookeeper. Mine had the GT8600M NVIDIA GPU but I have not had any of the issues that others with this board have had. The new 3300 looks nice. You can get it with a I5-520M. At a base price of $669 (USD), and a weight of 1.8 kg, it is targeted directly at the UL30JT market. I think its funny that the Dell, anounced only yesterday, will probably be on sale before the JT.

Anyone know how to configure the 3300 without an optical drive? I can't find that option anywhere.

I own a Vostro 1500 too.. got it a little over 2 years ago... the thing heats up like a mofo lol.. but so far it still works great. Only flaw is the hinge has loosened a bit.

The Vostro 3300 is not targeted at the ul30jt. The battery lives are not comparable.

Maybe not targeted at the direct niche of the JT, but it is targeted to the general audience looking for an ultraportable for a decent price. The Vostro still looks a bit clunky for my tastes. The red is decent looking though. Still can't beat the Asus warranty and reliability for the price.

I've had a Dell E1405 for 4 years now, so I'm not saying Dell doesn't make decent systems, but I think I'm going to jump on the Asus bandwagon this time around.

Yes true... it will offer good cpu performance for those not so interested in great battery longevity. If have no experiences on Dell laptops so I cannot comment on their build quality but that vostro sure looks pretty bulky.

Vostro looks too thick for my tastes, and the backlit keyboards on laptops doesn't do much for me. To be honest the light the screen gives off is more than enough to see the keys on the laptop, so having a backlit keyboard is soft of a waste of space, time and resources, probably adds another few mm of room that you could have shaved off the thickness of the laptop.

I'm heading into the new wave/generation of laptoping and that is with thinner, longer battery life and use of laptops. I would only use my ultra portable for actual mobility use, can't play games on the go with a track pad, at least I know I can't play on a trackpad. I'd rather be situated with a keyboard and mouse to play games, I can't stand using a laptop keyboard to play games on, it doesn't work for me. That's why I'm moving back to a desktop once StarCraft 2 comes out, I'm already in the beta, and I'm sort of waiting on when it comes closer to the end of the beta once they add in more to the beta as in higher resolution support that I might build up that new desktop I wanted for a long time now.

But I do want to pick up the JT before I do so, as I am in the market for an ultra portable laptop so take with me on the everyday go. I'll wait for the JT as I know I'll be truly happy with it. Hopefully it won't be no later than the end of April.

Hmm, led backlit keyboards don't really reduce battery by any noticeable amount and do not add thickness at all. Laptops like adamo/macbook/sony, all under an inch thick with backlit keyboards. People have done mods on the asus ul30 series as seen in one of the threads and was clearly able to do it within the chassis of the ul30.

About the same since Dell's batteries have a lower capacity. Plus the full power Core i processor and optical drive eat battery, making a large battery necessary for good battery life.

Yep, seriously. I think at this point there must be a hold-up in getting the "UM" processors. Everything else they should have no problems getting since much of them are holdovers from their last get laptops. Perhaps that's why Acer decided to put the regular "M" processors in their Timeline series, maybe they know something we don't. Either way, the longer it takes Asus to release the UL30JT the more likely that potential customers jump ship.

Acer said the UM was not powerful enough for them and decided to use the M's. I believe they are planning to use i7/i5 um in the 1410/1510 series or whatever those ones are.

UM = ultra low voltage 18w
LM = low voltage something inbetween?
    M = standard voltage 35w

Man, that dell looks pretty interesting. Asus has the warranty and everything, but without even a release date for the JT, I might jump ship soon. You hear that ASUS! your losing customers. All your fault for showing off the damn laptop at both CES and CeBit, gets everyone interested.

Price drop on what? It's not even out yet, wayyyyyy to early to be talking about price drops. Plus $100 is not even that much when you consider all the time you'd be waiting for a price drop that may or may not happen. Buy the thing and enjoy it.

Of course they've marketed it. It's shown up at CES2010, CeBIT, and in the Asus World Magazine. I don't see a reason to show the laptop at all these events along with their own magazine and not at least announce a rough release date.

I don't know guys. Every time I check the Ul30vt on Amazon, it goes out of stock fast! The demand for it must be huge or Asus doesn't ship out much to retailers. I can't believe how fast it went out of stock. I hope this doesn't mean that we won't see the ul30jt for more than two months. I'll either buy ul30vt when it drops to 749-699 or just wait for the pl30jt/ul30jt. Either way, I think I'll be waiting for awhile.

All i5/i7 M CPUs will be a lot faster than any i5/i7 UM CPU, because it runs at more than double base frequency and over 50% more boost frequency. The cost is double power usage meaning shorter battery time.

Also the i5 540m is practcally better than the lowest i7

In terms of raw power, you are correct. The M series are the most powerful IX Dual Cores. Actually, there is only a slight diffeence between the I5-540M and the I7-620M.

lol Bronsky. You seem to be looking for the exact same type of laptop I'm looking for. I've seen you lurking the m11x/acer 3820/sonyz and this with me :p

What's your final decision? I think I might have to go for the m11x since the acer seems to be quite expensive for the i5+5650 combo [based on the euro price of the i3+5450 for 850]

Man, if this puppy had a 330m in it, the JT would be perfect, but also $150 more (yikes), run hotter and drain battery quicker (when GPU is on).

Glad I got the M11x, but would have been tempted if the JT had a 330m and was under $1,100. No way for this year, anyways. My guess is the JT will be $200 (at least) more than the VT due to the i7 and 640gb HD.

Probably $1,200 if it also had a 330m.
