I am leaning toward the Acer 3820T if it comes out soon with the HD 5650. It's worth the extra cash, IMO, for the I5/I7 M series CPU. Plus, I was considering the Sony Z ($2,800 as I had it configured) before the 3820T, so the extra $$ for the IX and ATI GPU are not out of line. Looks like units will be shipping in Europe by 3/23/10. I think the fears of heat problems may be overblown, given the early reports on the Sony.

Yes I agree that it is worth the extra cash and compared to the Sony Z it is a hell of a deal. But for $500 more I could get the Sony with a much better screen, ssd, and most likely top notch quality. In the end time will tell but it is a Acer afterall. Hopefully they are stepping their game up just like Hyundai has since their genesis
But I guess for me, I'm not looking for a desktop replacement type computer but something for school with some edge. m11x for me fits the bill at a cheaper price. -
the Acer 3820T have a 14" model ?
-
not to keep de-railing this asus thread but yes, it's 4820T/TG.
ontopic: C'mon Asus release a price!!!! -
The main thing i want is nvidia optimus and low power processor. With switchable graphics w/o optimus you have to close all programs using graphics, then the screen goes blank for a few seconds. It would be a pain to open a game or video and then have to close everything because you forget to switch on the discrete graphics.
Is this how ATI switching goes too?
I want to wait for an optimus + core i7 640um, but as time goes i may be willing to settle for optimus + core i7 LM processor -
nope, this uses software that acer has to switch. No optimus .
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Short history lesson. First gen switchable graphics found in the Sony Vaio SZ you needed to restart the computer for it to switch. Then the Z and others came along and all you needed to do was close programs for it to switch. Now with Optimus, Nvidia switches depending on the programs needs. For ATI, when plugged in you run on dedicated, and when mobile you use integrated. See ATI's website for more. -
But hopefully there will at least be the option to allow dedicated when not plugged in, for if you wanted to show a friend something quickly in a game or if you wanted to quickly process a large photoshop file in CS4 or something.
EDIT: nevermind:

Bottom Line.... All this talking & Discussion...!!!
When is this thing OUT...?!? -
never. Asus is just teasing and messing with us.
-
the asus will be out when this Thread get 100 pages.. or 200
-
tomorrow: asus bails on ul30jt and pl30jt
-
And the day after, the people of NBR start a riot in front of Asus headquarters.
-
Nope, sadly everyone will go grab a dell vostro or acer 3820
-
Haha, that's what I'm gonna do actually, grab a Acer 3820 if the UL30JT doesn't come out soon enough.
-
I agree that Asus should give the release date and pricing now, especially because the other companies are releasing their i5/i7 laptops. But, also keep everything in perspective. Most likely they will give information within the next couple weeks, and we will have an opportunity to buy a PL/UL30vt sometime in April. For me, it's worth the wait to see what the price point will be. The form factor, battery life, and performance meeting with what hopes to be a decent price, still causes me to lean toward the Asus.
-
Most likely I am going to get the Acer instead of the Dell if asus keep fking with us. I would get the dell but only the Premium Productivity Intel Core i5 Processor 520m come with the m310 graphic card; The rest comes with a media card. yuck
-
Let's all bombard the Asus Facebook page with UL30JT requests, they should get the message even more!
-
How should the Acer 3820t's battery compare to the Asus UL30JT? Any change the acer battery lasts for 8 hours, as claimed?
-
huge chance it will. it got 6 hours with the 4400mAh and it's supposed to come with the 6000mAh
-
does the UL30JT have firewire enabled?
-
Have any other manufacturers come out with i5 or i7 ULV machines? I haven't seen anything that's actually for sale yet. There's really no other choice if you want a 520UM or a 640UM than to wait.
-
acer 3820 spec looks a lot better....

Asus UL30JT will be available in Poland in the middle of April. It's info from official Asus Polska Facebook site and confirmed by two large polish dealers of notebooks. The price is about 3200-3300 polish zlotych (about 850 EUR) for no system version.

Eww, what a terrible product ... not even a asus ul30 vt killer.
Not and LED display which makes its brightness worse, and no discrete gpu.
Please. -
thanks !
another month to wait

Hahahaha.. Patience is a virtue. I remember people complaining the same way when waiting for the UL30Vt. The result? People that bought the UL30Vt were really, really glad that they waited...
}:^D~ -
The Specs say they use the G45 chipset. I don't even think that chipset supports the i5. There is something terrible wrong the specs.
-
I have a little question about the UL30VT. I would really like to get the UL30JT but I don't think I can wait another month. My question is : can we expect a price drop on the former when the latter is finally released? I would be unhappy to see a 100-200 $ price drop in a few week if I buy the UL30VT now. :-/
-
That's not a bad system, but it is not quite comparable to the Asus systems we have been discussing. It may be a good option for someone who doesn't need the graphics power, doesn't like the UL30xx form factor, and if it comes in cheaper than the Asus. Apart from the form factor, if it is not much cheaper than the UL30vt, then it is not a good deal.
-
So does the UL30JT support firewire? I know the VT didn't yet people toted how it was great at editing HD footage (which you need firewire to import).
-
Can either of these be actually bought right now? If so, from where?
My guess is these are just announcements as well and also from Manufacturers who don't have to worry about selling huge quantities. -
How does the 310m compare with the new GMA HD Graphics present on Arrandale chips?
-
april... not bad
-
much much better. Which is why products like this asus or sony z still has discrete switchable gfx that come with the arrandale cpu
-
Well other notebooks come with the 330/335 which performs alot better than the 310m.
Reason I'm asking is because the migration from GMA 4500 to the new GMA HD is 2x-3x improvement looking at benchmarks (similar to the ION I suppose?) while the change from 210m to 310m is almost non-existent. -
The integrated "HD graphics" is dependent on the CPU's clock speed. So on 3dMark06:
"normal voltage" i5/HD gets about 2000
lower voltage i7/HD gets about 1500
The old 4500MHD got about 800
310m gets about 3400.
330m about 6600 -
How much does an ATI 5650 get?
And how much does 335m get?
Thanks. -
^ Wait...the 330m gets higher on 3dmark06 than 335m?
-
The thing is, the 335M has been tested only in the Alienware m11x to date, where it's let down by the CPU.
I would expect the 335M to be equal to or better than the 5650 in 3Dmarks, but weaker (though not by much) in general real-world performance. -
i'm tired of waiting for this.... this has been a waste of my time...!!!
-
At this point Apple might come out with an updated Macbook Pro faster than the Asus
-
Why would ASUS come out with a Macbook Pro?
-
Hah, I meant Apple would come out w/ the updated MBP before Asus did with their UL30JT. You know what I mean!!!
