Do you honestly expect to properly play games for a long time on battery power? Most people will be using the IGP when doing normal work and even watching high def videos, which the IGP will be able to do without breaking a sweat. I would only be playing games when I'm at home, in which case I would probably be plugged in.

    I got a 952 $ deal for UL30VT-A1 on JR.com. 70 $ for the shipping + 135 $ for an Intel X25-V 40 GB SSD.

This is the best deal I've found so far. But 70 $ for shipping, this is really high. ( shipping to Montreal )

Okay, never mind the load battery life and gaming. I got a bit carried away when defending the Jt...I just don't like acer too much so...

Anyways, I still think the jt will achieve better battery longevity when it is about simple tasks like web browsing and office stuff. The macbooks use low voltage processors and that allows them the achieve formidable usage times on battery.

I personally prefer longer battery life over performance (but netbooks are too weak) so I try to reason why the Jt is better :D but the acer looks good too, especially if you are after better performance.

Xmister talked about the switchable graphics, it is true tha acer probably has it, but the Jt features nVidia optimus, which is in many cases a better option.

Bottom line, UL30JT vs 3820TG = apples vs oranges.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but they are targeted towards different demographics.

One has a CULV + class 3 GPU... the other has a full powered mobil processor + class 2 GPU.

That's true. Given that, I think the difference in battery life is going to be more severe than some have thought until now, unless ASUS uses a poor battery.
Still, given that the main point of a laptop like the UL30Jt is battery life, if it isn't too spectacular in that regard, I don't see why anyone would get it over the TimelineX unless the price difference is severe.

Yes, but the main advantage of CULV would be battery life, and if Acer can really achieve 8 hours with a more powerful, non-CULV CPU, while Asus could only achieve 10 hours with CULV, then I think the 20% difference between battery life would really worth the extra performance, especially if they will be in the same price range. (Not to talk about the GPU, which will be enough powerful for new games for a long time.)

I didn't like Acer too, but as I heard from a lot of source, the Timeline series are well-built machines.

And yeah, Optimus is a bit better, if you don't want to switch manually, but still, the 2,5x performance of this VGA in my opinion much more important.

Optimus is better even if you do want to switch manually, mind you.
I'm still angling towards the N82Jv due to warranty and Optimus.

The difference of duration of battery between 640um and 620m isn´t so big, because both i7 processors turn off itself almost completely on idle. And the claimed 8 hours are measured on idle.

We should do a trade. You buy my laptop off amazon and i'll buy yours off newegg. Meet somewhere in the middle so we both save tax :D.

Alright guys, I've been looking and posting on this forum since when there were only 18 pages, But after 122 pages and 1,216 posts, I have realized that the UL30JT is not going to come out till mid-summer and with not much of a power increase, not to mention and upped price tag. Unfortunately, I can't wait till summer for a new computer, so I've decided to go ahead and buy the UL30VT-A1. I've heard a lot of great reviews about this, so I guess we'll see how it goes.

No, they don't. The U33JC is exactly the same as UL30JT, except the CPU is a full powered 35W one.

PLEASE, everyone, keep this thread to Asus UL30JT as the subject states, it's getting really stupid having to wade through pages of Acer and other useless talk when I want to find UL30JT info and nothing else. For Acer info, stick to the Acer forum!

Agreed. Maybe we should start a forum for "Those who want a thin, light, long-lasting, reliable, powerful laptop that's sweet lookin' too". That might cover what we are all looking for!

Hmm maybe have some the forums split into different types.. eg. notebooks, thin and light, mainstream, desktop replacement, gaming etc.. may also make sense. Sorry for going off topic again..just an idea.

    I've found the UL30VT-A1 at 744 $ on Abe's Of Maine, 37 $ of shipping. The final price would be 782 $.

Is that a recommendable store ? Is the warranty global for Asus? I'm a little worried about ordering in the US while I live in Canada...

Any info ? Thank you !

I saw the recent link to the Asus World Magazine....

It showed all the upcoming Asus Laptops....

Now what i couldn't figure out was this....

How come some laptops have USB 3.0 and some have USB 2.0....?!?

    1. Can someone here please explain to me how Asus decides to launch some laptops with USB 3.0 and others with USB 2.0...?!?

    2. Is this part of some marketing strategy or a joke...???

does anyone know what the UL30VT originally retailed for, I dont think its the current amazon retail price. seems low to me. I have a budget of a little under $1000 (shipping and tax included) and I want to know if ill even be able to afford the UL30JT when it comes out because i dont think the UL30JT will be that much more than the UL30VT's original retail price. Otherwise I could stop wasting my time and get the UL30VT now since both models are nearly identical anyways minus the CPU upgrade.

The ul30vt was $850 at amazon but at other reseller like gentech it was $823. Amazon new price is not $760 which is a very good price for this laptop.

About Microsoft's Bing Search Cash Back….
    Go to Bing here.
It is free, but first you need to create a Bing account (a Windows Live ID).
    Then select "Shopping".
Then do an item search, or select from the list of companies.

At the on-line store, make the purchase.
Wait as long as 48 hours for the Cash Back to show as "pending" in your Bing account.
The 5% or whatever cash back will be approved and accessible within 90 days.

Many retailers do not give any feedback on your Bing status.
So you go thru the process. And 48 hours after shipping,
you find out if Bing worked by seeing it "pending" in your Bing account.
Some retailers, like TigerDirect, show your Bing status on their check-out page.

After 90 days or whenever the cash back is approved,
you can request a check to be sent home, or transfer the money
to a PayPal account. (BTW. I do use Bing & PayPal from outside the US)

    From the UL30J, X32J, PRO32J, PL30J Model Manual:

SIM Card Compartment (on selected models)
The SIM card compartment allows insertion of a mobile SIM card for 3G functions. This compartment does not support hotplugging.

This is something I have not seen before... no more dongles

The rule of 72. Take 72, divide it by the interest rate and the resulting number is the approximately the number of years it will take to double your money. Of course the interest rate has to be within reason and can't be like 90% or something. For an interest rate of 10% 72/10 = 7.2 years is how long it takes to double your money.

Does that mean Bing cash back can be used if I'm in Canada and using Paypal with a Canadian credit card?

All right...long time reader and trigger weary shopper...I was thinking about getting an ul30 for a while now and like everyone else, settled on waiting for the jt. However, with the past several weeks and the vt falling to 700 dollars, I find it hard almost too good to pass up. The Acer coming out is going to be 900+. The JT if it ever comes out will most likely be 900+ as well. If the vt falls below 700, it is almost a moot point for me then since as everyone said, the gpu is the same most likely, and the cpu gain is only 15-20%. I can't justify a 25% premium in cost for a 15% gain in cpu for a second computer that I'll only game with when i'm traveling or bored at the cafe after hours or writing. Am I missing something? Someone enlighten me! To be honest, I'm tempted to get the ul30a and save the extra 100 or so bucks by not getting the integrated gpu. I have a gaming desktop for a reason so I'm not sure if I'll need that dedicated gpu. It's those times when I'll do that I wish I had one I'm sure.

BTW, as a writer by trade...how is the ul30 for extended writing sessions on a word? I haven't been able to test the keyboard out.

    Thanks!

Changing the hard drive won't affect the warranty. Most companies allow you to change things like the hard drive and ram without affecting the warranty. Apple is one company that won't let you change anything without voiding the warranty but then again that is Apple. You'll be fine.

Haha, that's why I said "approximately". It's an approximation technique. It was back in grade 9 (about 8 years ago) when I learned this. I think if you do the logarithm using x and 2x and you try to simplify, you can somehow get the number 72, but as I said it was a while ago so I don't remember how it was derived back then.

If I get around to it I will definitely let you know.

Hey I have a Canadian based Live account and paypal account. Bing cashback worked fine with me as long as the retailer accepts CDN based paypal. Some places like buy.com doesn't take CDN paypal.

I've succesfully gotten bing CB from my ebay purchases.

What happens if they clear out the UL30VT and UL80VT series and then introduces the JT series at a higher price point than we can afford? I hope that doesn't happen else I would be screwed. Sigh.. if only I didn't see that video from Zedomax, I would be using my ULxxVT in blissful ignorance. :)

Are there any additional deals better than the 711 from JRR? I'm going to see what Acer is going to bring to the table with their price point for the 3820tg. If it's way more expensive, gonna pull the trigger on the ul30vt i think.

I'm pretty much giving up on the jt. Even if it came out tomorrow, it'll probably be 900+ which is out of my price point for a laptop at the moment. Though it seems you can get a ul50vt (15 inch) for 750 as well. It obviously weighs a bit more but seems like such a better deal even though it defeats my original purpose a small and light laptop. I can't decide!!!!!

Lol, at this point I'm starting to think they're doing it on purpose hoping people will get sick of waiting and buy up the UL30vt and N81 before releasing the UL30jt and N82 so they don't have to drastically reduce prices on the old models to sell them.

I may also get the Acer (after seeing some hands on reviews of course). To be fair, its probably not ASUS' fault on the delay of the JT series if they don't have the CULV processors. If they have no idea of the price and availability of the CULV processors then they may not be able to give the public and estimated ETA or a general price range. I am just guessing here.

I have been looking for other laptops with the i series CULV and I don't think that its in any available laptop right now (I could be wrong)

ASUS' silence is really annoying, but perhaps they just have nothing to say?
