There will be improvements made to Arrandale processors, but the first-gen Core i7 ULVs will still have lower TDP to current Penryn ULVs. You shouldn't infer from the article alone that UL30JT will have worse battery life than UL30VT.

The Alienware M11x and the Sony Z, shown at CES in January, are both now up for preorder and March delivery. What's up Asus? I would at least like to see the specs for the UL30JT (310 or 330?) before I make my decision on what to get for my new lappy.
Bronsky -
The M11x has mirror-display. Extrem reflective.
Don't believe me?
Just look some of the pics taken for the reviews.
For me that's a no-no, especially if it is designed to be mobile! -
I was thinking the same thing.! Whats up with Asus?
-
I have the most stupid question but it is a deal breaker for me!
Anybody know how the JT will acutally look like? I heard that it'll be in matte? Or matte palm rest? Any pictures yet? I hope there will be silver version or I am sticking with UL30VT-A1. -
http://zedomax.com/blog/2010/01/08/asus-ul30jt-hands-on-review-ces-2010/
Theres also a couple videos on youtube, and google. Just search Asus UL30JT.
Those were also deciding factors for me. The older Ul model had glossy palm wrest which i didnt like, but the ul30jt is all matter, except for the screen, and the boarder surrounding it. -
The M11x has a lot of shortcommings for me. I'm trying to decide between the UL30JT and the SonyZ. The JT was advertised at CES with a 1GB 310M graphics card. I didn't know that there was a 1GB 310M so I am hoping that they got that spec wrong the they are actually putting a 330M GT in the JT (ok maybe I'm dreaming or smoking something). If they did, given the price and the fact that its an Asus, I would consider it instead of the Vaio Z. I just want Asus to give us real specs. and a release date.

where is the link to configure the NEW Z??? cause every sony site I went only have the old Z...
-
If you go to the old sony z explore details page, on the upper left of the overview area is an area that has 5 rotating things and the 1st one is the new sony z. The link is on post 209.

I'm really excited about this laptop... I hope it comes in black colour. I ve used a silver acer 5670 for 3 years and silver laptops pick up scratches and dirt very fast. They start looking old very quickly... The scratches look like black marks in the silver surface.
Black should be much more easier to maintain on a daily basis and scratches won't show up. Although this is a matter of personal choice but I feel black looks way more sexy and classier than silver...!!!
What say fellas...?!? Which color do you guys prefer...?!? -
kvnchg - You eat for 4 hours a day???
That made me laugh out loud. Agree w/ your point - the VT / JT battery life is more than sufficient. -
Why oh why no 330m GT? I'd be willing to give up 4 hours battery live and an extra $200 for one.
-
Hahaha, I always end up watching TV during dinner, and currently that involve following 2 TV series which together take up 2+ hours by themselves. I also cook my dinner sometime and that would end up taking at least an hour or 2 depending on how fancy of a meal I want. With traveling time lunch usually take an hour. Depending on the day I would cook myself a nice breakfast, and that takes time, even an hour.
I usually don't do all that in one day, but I don't find it too surprising if I spend on average 4 hours a day on food. -
Black only if it is not glossy.
-
+1
If it's overly glossy like the current lineup, then silver is better. -
this might be good news, was just posted in the UL30VT Owners Lounge:

The UL30VT is most likely being replaced by the UL30JT, hence the reason why Asus UK is saying they will no longer have the UL30VT in stock.

Will this thing be worth the wait over the VT? I'm seeing the i7 as a good sign but some people said it causes overheating and I hate noisy laptops (fan noisy, I can deal with hard drive noisy)
-
I think the ul30jt is suppose to use the i7 ulv chips (620um/640um) if I remember correctly. They shouldn't overheat... and no one would know at this time since those chips are launched (according to the intel site) but no laptop is out with them as of yet. I don't think there is even any laptops on preorder with those chips.
-
Actually the Sony Z series have a i7 620um as an option for preorder as of yesterday and thats due March 16th or so
-
Asus needs to release official specs and a release date to secure some people's buy decisions.. otherwise they'll lose sales to other people ready to buy laptops, but don't know about UL30JT, etc.
-
Asus just announced the N82 and it will have GT 335M (1G VRAM) with switchable graphic. This has my hopes up that the ul30jt will get the same treatment. I am having my fingers cross.
-
14" I5/I7 with a 335M GT or a HD5730 and swtichable graphics makes the N82 the state of the art. It at least gives me hope that a 330M will find its way into the JT. The 335M GT would be great but why would Asus put identical specs in its 14" and 13" laptops? There is also some speculation that the N82 will have the option for an ATI HD 5730 in the US market. Maybe the JT will have the option for the 335M GT.
If the I7/HD5730 is available in the N82, this may be the way to go even if the JT has an option for the 335M GT. The smaller form factor is tempting. If the N82 has an HD 5730 or 335M GT and the UL30JT has a 330M GT, it would be a tough choice. Choices, Choices, Choices. Glad to see some news out of Asus. I'm hoping that this means we should be hearing about the JT's specs soon.
If they do put the 335M GT in the UL30JT, I promised to sell my mom if i had to in order to raise the money to buy one. I'll miss her.

you a funny man
-
Even if asus puts a 330m in here I will jump all over it.
I think they will put in at least a 330m just to compete with the m11x IMO -
the i7 um will use the same if not less than current culv. Smaller die, smaller wattage output.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
The new Z is not available with the ulv UM series Arrandale's. -
Yeah, I was going to mention that too. It says upto 2.66ghz i7-620m not the um models.
https://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wc...=10551&langId=-1&cmsId=zseries#specifications -
but i really don't think Asus will use the UL30 to compete against the 11x
they are just pretty different..
11x is market as a gaming system
while ul30 is market as a "stylishly thin" ultra portable with good performance...
havn't seen anything with the word "GAMING" in UL30 section in asus 's site
the ul30vt is thinner and lighter then the 11x
they are in different market.( kind of)
i think Asus will make another line in G series for gaming. with ULV cpu -
But maybe Asus will put in a better graphics card to compete with the Sony S and new Sony Z series. The Sony Z will have the 330m though it is in a complete different price range (more than double the current ul30vt's). We can still hope for a better graphics card though.
-
i doubt it...
so.. with in the similar
3-3.5lb
11-13.3"
800-900 dollars
what else in the market have better graphic then UL30 VT's 210??? (or JT 's may be 310)
if there is nothing .... then asus have no reason to put in a more powerful GPU -
I thought the Sony S has the 310 in it. A little more expensive but not by much.
And of course the m11x. I know that the m11x is a gaming notebook but I can't be the only person to be also considering between the ul30jt and the m11x. Even if it isn't suppose to be marketed to the same crowd, you can't help but compare the two. -
Any closer tips for the price? I am thinking about $ 850... that would be sweet
..
-
mm i am not... i will not go over 3.5lb when picking up a ultra portable...
if i go over.. i will just go pick up the samsung R480 14" i5 with geforce 330 -
And I won't get bigger than a 13" (actually 12" or less would be ideal but that really limits what I can get). I had a lug a 14" around before and the size bothered me.
-
myself... i really want to have something within 3.5lb
11.6" is just abit small...
My 1201n 's 12" fell small when i was playing mass effect 2 or l4d
so 13.3 " should do me good.. and i used to the ION and 9300mgs 's performance..
the 210m is already an upgrade + the core 2 cpu...
should be enough for me to play games with mid setting at native res..
i have no need to go high setting
if i need full glory
i will be playing the games on my core i7 desktop with 5970 and 3 22" monitor eyefinity -
I just wish we knew the ul30jt specs already. I am so impatient.
-
i think i will just get the ul30vt
if the JT really that good.. at the time it arrive to canada..
it could be 3-4 months pass
then i will just upgrade again.... -
the two games that i play now and bother me abit in playable fps....
is mass effect 2 and L4D/2
with 1201ni getting barely playable in mass effect 2 and just playable fs in l4d
with much better cpu...and abit better in gpu..
i should be able to get 50% increase in fps...
just this i will be happy...
i get 1900 in 3dmark 2006 with 1201n
and from some review..
ul30vt get like 3400 in 3mark2006
should be more then enough for what i use for.... -
hey fury, I sold my 1201n and am patiently waiting for the ul30jt. If no news comes by the end of feb might cave and just get the ul30vt which is suppose to be an awesome machine.
I liked the look and feel on the 1201n, just lacked alittle in speed and battery life. -
One main thing the JT has over VT apart from the bump in specs, is a much better trackpad I believe. That golf dimple styled trackpad was horrific imo. Considering that's a huge aspect of a laptop when your on the go, I can't put myself to spend money and a bad trackpad.
-
the wait and the spec thing, really have me thinking the samsung r480 now
which is avaible in the local store ( all in Canadian dollars..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
following is the spec..
Processor Intel® Core™ i5 Processor 430M
2.26 GHz, 3 MB
Chipset Intel HM55
Memory 4 GB DDR3 (2 GB x 2) 2 x SODIMM
Hard Drive 500GB 5400rpm
Optical Drive Super Multi Dual Layer
Video 14.0" LED HD (1366 x 768) 16 : 9 Gloss
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330 M 1 GB GDDR3
for 1029 i can get this...but 2.4kg and 3-3.5 hour of battery life.. ...
or 929 ( and waiting ) for ul30vt
or may be around 1000 for the ul30JT
plz help...
i really in the mid of this... -
IThe UL30Jt still has that crappy dimpled trackpad with the rocker switch. Look at the second picture from Zedomax.
I agree with you, it is the worst trackpad I have ever used, and the rocker switch was too resistant and nowhere near deep enough to register a decisive click. (IMO the almost perfect touchpad was from IBM Thinkpads, except a little larger touch surface would have been nice.)
And for some reason Asus is putting it on every one of their notebooks and netbooks. Whatever idiot at Asus signed off on this decision should be banned from the notebook industry.
EDIT: Just saw this comment on that Zedomax post: "Btw, you can rub your nose and rub your trackpad every once in awhile, it will work super smooth" Gross. (Seems like the solution is to ensure that there's oil on top of the touchpad.) -
If your considering the Samsung then check my sig. I bought that from BB for $899. Id take the sony over the samsung cause of the cost savings and more powerful processor. Plus if you use Bing to make your purchase you can save 5% and bump the cost down to $850.
-
also i am in canada, can't find that CW series with i5
sony.ca only have the i3 with no geforce for 999
mm 30 dollars more to go i5 and geforce 330..i will go samsung if need...
but i still kind of like the size and price of the ul30vt(jt should be able more expensive right??? like 150-200 more ? -
The Samsung looks nice but have you seen the new N82? I5/I7-335M GT or HD 5740 - 500GB 7200rpm HD for about a thousand, available by the end of February. If I was buying a 14", this would be it.
I want a 13" so was looking at the Sony Z. If the UL30JT comes in with a 330M GT, I will buy it instead. Just waiting for Asus to release the specs.
Bronsky -
money is a issue to me...
i can't really go over 1000 dollars in canadian dollars much..
that is like 900 dollars in us..
this is why the ul30 vt/jt attract me..
i just worry, if i will regret getting the lower power vt..
but i do like the size and weight of it...
but ofcause i also love my money too... -
I am torn. The UL30Jt should perform better than the M11x (overall) and ASUS builds tend to be better than Alienware. Similar volume size and great battery life too.
I might cancel my M11x and go for the UL30Jt. -
You really think so? The m11x's 330M should be leaps and bounds above a 310M.
-
Nobody really knows which card is coming in the JT. That is the problem. It was shown at CES with a 1GB 310M. The problem is that there is no 1GB 310M that i know of. So, either a modified 310M is going to be in the JT or it will have a 330M GT at the least. That confusion has been the focus of a lot of speculation in this thread. The release of the N82 with a 335M GT and a possible option for the HD 5740 has further fueled the speculation.
If the JT comes with a 310M, I wouldn't even consider getting it. The M11x, with its overclockable SU7300 and 335M GT will significantly outperform the JT in the gaming arena. If the JT comes with a 330M GT, Order it. If the JT comes with an option for a 335M GT, sell your mother to get it.
