    I'm confused why a lot of folks in this thread are talking about buying the UL30VT when it has an "old" (Core 2 Duo) processor and "slow" (5400rpm) HDD. Could someone please fill me in on the big secret? There must be something to this laptop other than the specs :)

    Won't the UL30JT totally dominate it in everything except battery life?

    Apologies if this is a dumb question or has already been covered :p

    Apparently from some early reviews (somewhere in this thread), the UL30JT has weaker battery life (6-7 hours vs. 9-10 hours), doesn't really perform better in GPU-intensive tasks, and even the CPU power isn't a huge boost. Given that the JT model is more of a slight evolution of the VT model, many are starting to feel the VT is a better buy due to the cheaper price, control over GPU switching, and better battery life.

    That, and most of us waited since January (after canceling our first order of the UL30VT-A1) only to find out the UL30JT is subpar.

    Don't miss out on models from other companies that are similar to what you were looking for in the JT. In particular the soon coming Acer 3820TG is similar in form factor and battery life to the VT/JT but with a better graphics card. Will probably be close in price to the JT whenever it comes out. Of course it could be a June release for the Acers, so if you need something now you should probably go for the VT.

    battery life is not similar. Against JT likely, VT totally no.

    I currently have the UL30VT-A1 with wireless ON, screen dimmed to 30% occasional youtube or other video, doing word processing and browsing, I get nearly 10 hours of solid use out of it (on integrated video of course). The system is absolute silent and no heat. I was eagerly awaiting for the JT but not so much after this review and several question/answer session.

    Apparently UL30JT is noisier and runs hotter than VT which is not surprising due to the 1 GB video card. Check out this review.

    Asus UL30JT review – 13 incher with extra-muscles and good autonomy

    Since I have my overclocked I7 rig with ATI 5870, silence/coolness and long battery would be my objective and UL30VT seem to excel in these areas than JT.

    Just pulled the trigger and went for the UL30VT-A1. After reading this forum for a long time I decided it would be for the best. It's exactly everything I was looking for in a laptop. It's fast, perfect form factor, great battery life, good graphics card, and CHEAP. What more could you ask for?

    Nothing, VT is the best, Nvidia G 310M and Nvidia G210M are exact same video card with minor speed advantage. It is not fast enough where 1GB would have any advantage over the 512MB variant. I could play Modern Warfare 2 on my UL30VT at 1366 x 768 with some lag during intense firefight and NO lag at 1024 x 768 :D at 13 inches, the reduced resolution hardly mattered.

    enjoy :D

    how hot does the laptop get when you have it on your lap? 1-10 scale; 10 being really uncomfortable.

    As you all know, if you've followed this thread, the UL30JT uses the 18W CULV Core i5/i7 CPU range. If you want the 35W full power mobile Core i3/i5/i7 many have looked to Acer, even though the Asus documentation linked in this thread lists the U33JC as the Asus option.

    It seems it will arrive this month, but with a name of U35JC instead. This should be an identical laptop to UL30JT, with only the CPU changed from 18W CULV to full power mobile version at 35W, first with Core i3.

    I would like an gagdet that shows which gfx is in use, nvidia has made one but I can´t find it anywhere.

    The U30JC will be getting an I7-620M? Anybody have any idea how this thing will handle heat? The Bluray is a nice option. I would like a better GPU on either one. But, I'm not going there.

    Bronsky :cool:

    Oh by the way ... GO FLYERS!!

    EDIT: saw the catalogue ... not dumping the UL30JT at all. Just adding the UL35JC. Asus has the oddest array of models. Why so many variations of the 310M GPU?

    U30Jc with the i7-620M already is available here in Portugal.
    User reviews said that it doesn't heat much. And battery gets about 7-8h with wireless on.

    U30JC has DVD. U33JC (and U35JC?) don't. They all use the 35W Core iN CPUs. Currently only i3 is available, but i5 and i7 models are listed on Intels web site since early this year and will move into Asus and other manufacturer laptops as Intel starts delivering them.

    UL30JT will still have its place, currently only with the 18W i5, later with the i7s listed on Intels web site. PL30JT is pretty much the same model.

    I've been watching this thread for a while without posting, but I'm a bit confused now! Will the UL30JT not be using the CULV processors anymore? Or will it but the U35Jc is coming out that is basically the same thin laptop without an optical drive, but the regular 35w chips + 7-8 hours of battery life? And then there's still the UL30VT-a1 to consider too... I am very confused @@

    I really want long battery life (7+ hours tested for reg browsing), sub $1000 USD, pref no optical drive and thin/ light, and the ability to play CS:S, Heroes of Newerth, WC3, etc. run on ~medium settings. I thought it would be the UL30JT, but after the recent graphics benchmarks I'm reconsidering the VT-a1, and considering the U35Jc. Maybe I'm asking too much?

    Any thoughts on how the graphics performance would change with the i7 ULV in the UL30JT or the differences with the 35w processors in the U35Jc? Asus really needs to try a different product strategy; the different laptops are named similarly and differences are small. This is getting a bit ridiculous :x

    From what you mentioned, all of the aforementioned laptops can do your game, but the only one TESTED that will guarantee you 7 hours browsing and more is UL30VT.

    I got that yesterday while not only browsing but also installing a lot of programs.

    CONGRATS, Chreller!

    Could you tell us it's specs and where you bought it (what country you're in)?

    Also, could you run 3DMark06 on it when you have time and tell us your score?

    What is your Windows Experience Index score? (Under Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools)

    Thanks!

    BTW, this reviewer of the UL30Jt:
    Asus UL30JT review – 13 incher with extra-muscles and good autonomy
    only received a 3.0 on his graphics score, which seems odd.

    [IMG]

    What is Optimus doing? It looks like the graphics scores go down with each generation! Of course I know this isn't really true as the 3DMark06 scores show the OC'd UL30Vt at around 3400 and the U30Jc at around 3700.

    Here are various ASUS WEI graphics scores for Aero graphics & gaming:

    * UL30Vt 4.9 / 5.9 (clocked to 1.73GHz)
    * U30Jc 4.6 / 5.7
    * UL30Jt 3.0 / 4.4

    Some have suggested that the difference is due to Optimus perhaps running the WEI tests under the IGP, but I can confirm that, watching GPU-Z while the test are being done, that the WEI test is definitely accessing the NVIDIA GPU during the tests on my U30Jc.

    Any thoughts?

    PS To confuse us all even more, a month ago, a review by a Taiwanese reviewer showed the WEI graphics scores as 2.9 / 5.4.

    Yes, the NVIDIA GPU stays on during ALL of the WEI graphics tests on my unit. It immediately goes off when WEI is testing the CPU & HDD.

    Yes, you're probably right about that ... I'm just curious at the different results on similar units except for Optimus under the identical tests.

    So my question isn't about scores/speed results as much as "why the big difference?"

    @any one with a UL30VT

    the only reason stopping me from buying a UL30vt is the processor speed. So all VT owners, is the computer "snappy"? How much speed increase would I see between the i5 and core 2 duo?

    once this is cleared, I think I have decided what I want to do.

    thanks!

    I just received my VT-A1 on Saturday after waiting too long for the JT. I must say it does feel snappy to me, even not running OC'd. I'm pleased with the performance for my use. My use is EMR via an internet based server and light gaming.

    The fit and finish are not the best but I understood that before I bought and I suspect won't be much different on the JT.

    SU7300 @ 1.3 ghz is more than enough to handle any daily tasks. I keep it overclocked to 1.7 ghz ALL the time and feels really snappy to me and battery indicator always shows 10 hours fully charged and on integrated video.

    With it OC to 1.7 ghz and G210m engaged, I can play modern warfare 2 perfectly. It is also more than enough to watch 720P MKV file movies. It is more than snappy enough to handle most tasks with ease.

    Mind you, do not expect this to perform everything with same speed as your overclocked core i7 desktop and SSD desktop. Keep in mind it is a low powered laptop and its mission is for longevity, you will be plenty happy with it.

    The VT allows for permanent overclocking by using a software feature called "turboboost". Basically you just press a software button and reboot and it will stay overclocked till you change it back.

    heck if you are not happy with 1.73 ghz, with it even 1080p also no problem when you watch it via hdmi to the tv. you could even oc`ed further, there is a thread about it.

    this is only recommended if your going to plug your ul30/80 on the table for the whole day.

    UL30JT becomes even more obsolete on its halfway balance of performance/mobility now that the X42JV starts to emerge. (its already for sale in france for 800€, it seems to be an exclusivity to one french store worldwide for the moment ? o_O cause I see review of it nowhere else)

    X42JV - ASUS http://multimedia.fnac.com/multimedia/images_produits/Zoom_Planche_BD/5/4/6/0884840605645_3.jpg

    I think im going to resell my VT for that one and pop in the a 9cell battery whenever a positive review emmerges ^^ If I can reach the JT's autonomy i'd consider it a deal.

    The X42Jv looks like a very nice unit (if one doesn't mind the extra 1/4" 6.6mm thickness). At last, a GPU upgrade! Isn't the 335M the GPU the m11x uses? Very nice GPU indeed!

    If you get it, let us know what your impressions are and how it performs.
