ic... but i think you have yet to include your transformer/power adapter and etc things that you will be carrying.

indeed, 500g is not heavy.. but 10x500g means something doesn't it ?

oh thanks for that! I had no idea about BCB! Canceled my order from amazon, and ordered directly from J&R, so it came out to be $702 ($36 cash back!)

EDIT: sorry it was on sale on J&R for 720-36(BCB) = total of $684 :)

    Just to be clear :
UL30JT = 2.2kg with charger (375g my bad I just weighted mine wrong previously) and more or less a 400g external drive.
    X42JV = 2.7kg with charger (500g given it's the same spec of the U30JC which has a 485g charger) or 2.9kg with a 8 cell battery.
My point was simply that the difference all packed is in the end of only 100g or 300g.

I hope this is clear enough to not be misinterpretated now.

So this has worse battery life then the UL30VT and the performance difference between the two is basically nothing. I feel bad for the people that were waiting for this.

The battery life is comparable to the VT. The VT does get 8-9 hours with normal usage. This looks to be getting 7-8 hours. It is a bit of a disappointment though. Not entirely worth waiting for. The only good thing about me cancelling my VT order back in February is that I was made aware of other models out there in the pipeline that look to be better, namely the Acer 3820TG (still no release date) and maybe the HP Envy 14 (though it's a bit heavy for what I'm looking for). I'll still give the JT a shot if it comes in with a good price. If none of these are released sometime in June then I'll go ahead with the VT, saving $150-200 over where it was in February. I'm still hoping my patience will be rewarded. I'm getting sick of my old Dell. Tried doing a few things tonight and was so ticked at how long it takes to crank through routine tasks.

It is rated on ASUS' site for 10 hrs as opposed to the UL30Vt's 12 hrs, so that was known all along.

These reviewers were running full brightness with WiFi on while doing Offfice apps and got 7 hrs.

With regular office work, they got 8 hrs and didn't say what their brightness was nor if they were using WiFi at the same time.

On idle, they got 10 hrs.

In none of the battery tests did they say if they had their CPU overclocked during the battery tests, ... they show at one point that they had the 1.06GHz processor o'ced to 2.48GHz which will eat more power, nor do they say what power management mode they were on during the test.

So, for me, they've left out too many details for us to make a fair judgement on the battery life.

Hi guys. Sorry, but this is a huge post. Can someone summarize benchmarks between UL30VT an JT? What is the general concensus of the i5 for real world performance for every day use and also for gaming?

Better CPU --> less battery life. I think 7-8 hours is still pretty darn good, but the real disappointment is the marginal improvement in performance over the VT series despite increased CPU consumption.

I got mine permanently clocked at 1.9ghz.. well it automatically overclocks at boot up to 1.9ghz. never had a single issue with overclocking. seems pretty fast to do PS work.

I am curious is JT is much faster...

Wasn't the JT supposed to have an i7 processor in it?

edit: oh they are coming out a little later.

If the price tag on the JT is 900+ I think I will pay the extra $200 for the 13.3 MBP.

If I imported the JT at about $900US, after shipping to NZ it would cost approximately $1600NZ.

I can get the 13" MBP for $1800NZ so the prices are very close, although I have to admit I'm partial to lighter laptops. I'd love a MBP if the bootcamp drivers were better optimised for Windows7 (battery life, keyboard backlight etc).

I have a VT, and I want the JT because:

    1. The CPU is 50% faster, and no, I will never play games on it, since I have my PS3 for that. I do notice instances when my cpu is at 100% max, so more speed would definitely help. I also run a virtual machine from time to time.
    2. I don't need to switch to Nvidia when I'm using it on my desk connected via HDMI to my monitor. The VT HDMI output is hardwired to NV, Optimus doesn't work that way.

As long as it's $800 or less, I'll get the JT.

JT is for sale in korea is priced 30~40% higher than VT.. (VT approx. $1000 JT approx. $1350)
you sure it's 50% faster? that would make it really fast.. and no I don't play games either so graphic means jack all to me..

is this thing out btw in the states?? it's been a while..

The JT will be at least $850 at launch, as that is what the current vt-a1 is selling for. It might be cheaper if there is no dedicated graphics and the core i3 in it.

You won't be getting 50% more processing power out of the JT either. They benchmark pretty close. You just lose 1-3 hours of battery life and gain optimus.

    On ASUS' product page:
    http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=dh1loes9V1IGKwCA (check the Specs tab)
    1) The U30Jc listed as selling with one of six processors (depending on region), and that is just what happened.
    2) On the ASUS product page, the UL30Jt lists as selling with only ONE processor, the i5-520UM. Reviews of in-hand models confirm this:
    Asus UL30JT review (w/ i5-520UM processor)
    ASUS UL30Jt review #2 (w/ i5-520UM processor)
    Taiwan UL30Jt review (w/ i5-520UM processor)

So, at least in the US/Canada market, I am fairly confident it will only come with the i5-520UM, ... and very likely it will only come with that processor in the rest of the world, incl. Taiwan.

Has anyone found any advertising or sold UL30Jt thus far that came with an i7? If not, I'd forget about looking for it in the UL30Jt. (The demo model shown at CES 2010 in January doesn't count, nor its resultant Zedomax & Expert Laptop and other links back in January, as it was clearly a prototype ... as were others there.)

Then again, the last ASUS sales magazine:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/484551-asus-world-magazine-may-june-2010-a.html
lists the UL30Jt as having one of THREE possible processors (still no i7 processor, sorry).

Still, the ASUS product page has thus far been accurate. The ASUS sales magazine has not. I'd more trust the listing on ASUS' product page listed at the start.

A UL30Jt with an i7 processor is coming out a little later? Where did you read that?

Well, the UL30Vt-A1 sells now for $737 over at Amazon, so the UL30Jt won't be near that for a while.

The U30Jc began to sell for $899 in April and 6 weeks later is "down" to $869 over at GenTechPC & XoticPC. Bing CB can push the price lower.

So I'd guess no significant price drop on the UL30Jt for at least 2 months, perhaps more.

The article calls them "32-nanometer Nehalam chips". The i5-520UM are part of the "32-nanometer Arrandale chips."

I'm not clear what the differences are. Both are 32nm. Not sure what an i5 Nehalem processor looks like nor its number designations.

    Wiki's Nehalem (microarchitecture) processors
The Tech Report's article on the new Nehalem processors

UPDATE: TechReport says the new i5 will be the i5-750 quad-core running at 2.66GHz, but it doesn't look like a mobile solution.

Then again, perhaps the Arrandale chip is in the Nehalam chip family. Not my area.

Nehalem is the architecture, Arrandale is the 32nm shrink of the Nehalem architecture which was originally 45nm.

The original CEBIT 2010 pictures of the JT had it with a i7 ULV and 12 hours of battery life. I think i5 and 10 hours is the current listing.

It seems a lot of the drivers on the early UL30JT are not up to date yet.

I really wonder if the the benchmarks will be higher with proper driver, and by how much.

How can it be at the default CPU frequency of 1.06GHz? Intel Turbo Boost automatically kicks up the frequency, depending on number of threads, and within TDP limits. I believe 3DMark06 is single threaded so should automatically bump to maximum speed of ~ 1.85 GHz, if it is being taxed fully.

I also have the same problems using 3dmark06 with the UL30JT.

    But to something much worse.

When I turn on turbo33 the screen flickers a little and the computer slows alot down. I really hope some new drivers will solve this.

The UL30VT-A1 is now $699 on Amazon, the lowest price yet and better than Bing Shopping at the moment.

Amazon.com: ASUS UL30Vt-A1 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Silver Laptop (12 Hours of Battery Life): Computer & Accessories

It looks like most of the manufacturers will be releasing their models in late June (back to school according to them). So, if you can't wait, now might be the time to jump on the VT. I am going to wait and hopefully get the Acer 3820TG. I won't write off the JT yet, but the price would have to be significantly better than the Acer. The VT continues to be my go to backup if all else fails.

Trying to decide if it is worth the extra potential $200 to buy the JT over the now-$699 VT (I assume Bing Cashback would make it around there regardless). What do you think?
