Amazon charges tax for me so the J&R w Bing is still my best deal.
-
-
the laptop will be shipped from J&R so you will not get taxed. Well I wont at least.
-
Does any of you guys own a UL30JT? I would appreciate if somebody could help fixing this problem. -
Jt sounds so disappointing
-
These are the scores I get when running 3dmark Vantage on the UL30JT
and a Dell SP2309W with 2048*1152 pixels:
ORB - World of Performance
I'm running in high performance mode, but not with turbo33 enabled, because it strangly slows the machine alot down and produce alot of screen flicker. -
I'd consider contacting Asus and seeing if you can get the notebook replaced if you are having issues with Turbo33.
-
In my view no, not really for a marginal increase in performance and slight less battery life. And with the $200 saved you could use that towards a new SSD drive to make that UL30vt nice and snappy.
-
Very true. A SSD would make a real performance difference.
-
I don't really understand why the new intel chips aren't showing any kind of performance increase...
The new macbook pros with the i5/7 processors show a significant increase in performance from the core2duos. New vs Old: MacBook Pro Benchmarks compare the Core 2 Duo 13″, Core i5/i7 15″ and 17″ models - OS X Daily -
The i5 does show a performance increase in the UL30JT but not one that many people feel would justify a $200+ price premium over the current discounted UL30VT since graphic performance is the same and battery life may actually be worse in the UL30JT.
-
I doubt it.
-
I dunno he might be on to something. Soon there will be a lot of other ULV core based laptops coming and the Asus might not be as unique. They might have to make some changes or can it and release a whole new model completely.
Hopefully! I was all over the JT until I heard about the poor viewing angles on the screen, minimal increase in performance from the VT, and flex on the keyboard.
I'd prefer a nice screen that's matte and a laptop made of aluminum vs plastic. I hear a lot more aluminum laptops are coming out this year. The Sony Vaio Z seems like the only laptop that meets all my needs but it's pricey! -
Pricey indeed. But its specs for its form factor are just amazing. I did hear that the Z's thin screen is fragile and that the chassis can get pretty hot.
But a lovely size, weight for what it offers.
Pricey though. -
Would you guys recommend waiting for the UL30JT or pull the trigger on the UL30VT-A1 for $699 on Amazon? I am not looking to spend over $800. What would you guys say is the BEST laptop for <$800?
-
i can't beleive the ul30jt is still not even out... how disappointing.
-
pull on ul30vt-a1 now... JT is only tiny slight better, and it HASNT EVEN COME OUT YET. WHAT A JOKE OF A LAPTOP. failure on Asus's part
with the saved money you can get a quality mice/SSD/etc.
way worth your money -
How big of an SSD would you recommend? Would I just need enough to install Windows 7 and a couple of applications?
Would you recommend any laptop OVER the UL30VT-A1 in the <$800 range? -
It's hard to recommend anything over the UL30VT at $700 or less, as it is right now. I think if you need a laptop pronto, that's the way to go. I'm holding out for a non-ULV model but have seriously considered the UL30VT.
-
How would you compare the UL30VT to the HP dm4? These are the 2 laptops I have been going back and forth on. -
Yeah. I also heard it's made of carbon fiber and significantly outperforms the Macbook Pro. Fitting a bluray player on the 13" while keeping a pretty slim design is nuts too. I hear they're announcing a refresh in the next few weeks.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
The Z's thin is strong. There is a photo of someone holding an older C2D powered Z by the screen. -
I haven't read too much about the dm4, but you'll get an i5/i7 processor and either Intel graphics or Intel + 5470, which is comparable to the 210M in the UL30VT. Configuring the dm4 with the switchable GPU will put it above $900, so it comes down to whether you prefer performance or battery life. Plus, the dm4 has an optical drive.
Good luck! -
If you've followed this thread you see that it's been on sale in multiple countries for a month now.
-
The hybrid drive! Even better, p0int. I had read an article about the new Lenovos planning to use them (called "RapidDrive"), but even then (April), they weren't using them yet. I didn't realize that they were out. Thank you for pointing that out to me. I now know what my next drive purchase will be.
Taking the UL30Jt back to the drawing board? Don't hold your breath. I thought that the U35Jc would be the a next logical step up from the U30Jc; a U30Jc without the ODD. I was wrong.
Look at these photos just released from Taiwan of the U35Jc:
New Taiwan U35Jc Photos
or here it is translated:
Google Translate
You may have to use the original untranslated link if the photos don't show up properly.
Well, it lost the ODD alright, but the chassis also lost the brushed aluminum palm rest & trackpad. Now it's all dark gray plastic that's printed on with a weave pattern, and the design of the chassis (hinges, power/instant-on buttons) is like the UL30Vt, not the U30Jc.
People asked repeatedly for the speed & classy chassis of the U30Jc, but with no ODD. It has speed & no ODD but the chassis has been down-graded to cheap-looking plastic. It looks like an entirely different notebook.
I'm trying to figure out what place this notebook will have compared to the UL30Jt they recently released in Taiwan as well.
They half-listened. -
Yeah i think of the U35JC as basically a UL30JT with a full 35watt i-series chip with everything else being constant. Im curious if ASUS made the move to announce the U35JC after ULV processor delays with the UL30JT since the U35JC wasn't included in the original January emagazine that previewed most of the 2010 ASUS laptops and was randomly announced in their may emagazine.
Yeah im pretty sure they wont change the physical harddware of the UL30JT for the US release, what i meant to say was that I hope they will have better optimus drivers and maybe something like changing the clock speed of the 310m prior to the US release. Or in other words, make good on their original 12hr battery life claim in January and not have a dip in GPU performance in some benchmarks. -
Is there anything you guys from the US want to know about the current UL30JT Model? Since I have had it a couple of weeks now.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
More Hands on of the U35JC. But why would you go for it when you can get a more powerful gpu in the TimelineX?
-
Build quality and better warranty?
-
Or the fact that the TimeLineX models aren't coming out in the USA in the foreseeable future.
-
On the webpage you linked it said that "The U35 is up to 11 per cent faster than competitive models and offers up to 11.43 hours of battery life" , the U35JC can get up to 11.43 hours with a i5-450M???? Yet at the same time the UL30JT with the ULV i5-520UM can only get 10 hours? Something must be wrong cause if this is true then the UL30JT is an absolute failure. Hopefully that statement about the U35JC is just a typo or else U35JC is now my new next laptop.
I would get any ASUS over any Acer due to build quality and brand preference. -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Except Acer advertised both the 5470 and 5650 as options along with integrated graphics only. -
The point is you cannot get the machine in the North America and Acer has no plans to make it available in North America.
You could pull a deal like Bronsky and purchase it overseas for some outrageous 1,300+ plus dollars. -
Homeskillet you first said that you couldn't get the timelineX with a 5650 anywhere.
Here in Denmark you can get the timelineX with an I5 450M and the 5650.
Here in Denmark it cost around 1158$ -
I stand corrected then. You can indeed find them in Denmark.
The point still stands- folks in the biggest market in the world have no access to the machine. Could be reason that someone would opt for a Asus 35JC over a comparable Acer. -
Does anyone have any idea when the U35JC is scheduled to be released in North America? I've been reading these boards for a while and been waiting for the UL30JT, but from the looks of it the U35 is gonna have a better CPU and higher battery life, anyone have more info about this?
Also, is there any more information on the Envy 14? That looks like it's going to be an absolute killer, but again, this is only on paper. -
The Envy 14 does have a definite release date - first week of July (might want to check me on that). But it does have a definite date and definite specs
-
so did everyone jump ship and got the VT?
I might just save my money until i transfer to a university - 2011. -
Even though the everyone is stating that the performance specs are minimal from the VT, it has to be noticeable. Combine this with a couple hundred dollar increase and you could have yourself a winner. People already rave about owning a VT.
-
How much does the Envy 14 weigh? Looks like a wonderful machine, but the size is worrying.
-
Actually, according to Acer's Facebook rep they are coming out at the end of June in the U.S. and Canada.
-
The U35JC shipping delivery date from an online retailer was just changed from June 1 to July 22.
-
Can you link to the online retailer? Also which country is this retailer in?
-
id like to know as well
-
Since the UL30VT isn't on sale here in the Netherlands and the UL30JT is on stock, I'm planning to buy the UL30JT.
However, I want to replace the internal HDD by an SSD, but this raises a problem: Since there is no DVD-drive, is it possible to reinstall Win7 from an USB-stick? (Or from an SD card perhaps).
Or would it be possible to simply copy all data from the original HDD to the SSD with image-software on my desktop PC?
Is there some special trick I can do with the internal recovery partition?
And will I run into problems with my Windows license?
-
x3.
The U35JC is interesting... but not if I can't get it a week before the 1st of July. Might have to settle on U30JC :/ -
I decided awhile back that I was just going to forget about the JT and get the VT. I'm in no rush and I've been waiting for the release expecting a nice price drop on the VT. As of now the price dropped another $40.00 and is now $690.00 which is the lowest I have ever seen. Now I'm beginning to wonder though if Asus will continue to make these when the JT comes out. I'm just trying to time this the best I can so I can get the lowest price. Any ideas?
-
Yes you can install from a USB flash drive. This is actually supported by microsoft because of netbooks, etc.
Microsoft Store: Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool Help
I think you'll either need the windows 7 DVD, or the ISO file (if you created your own, got from microsoft technet, etc)
It should also be possible to copy the original data to new drive, but it can sometimes become complicated. -
Is there a UL30 model available with the SU9400 in the states? In black?
-
Clonezilla and Gparted with a 2.5 hard drive external usb enclosure lets you clone it directly from the existing hard drive to the new SSD.
You can also use Ghost, Acronis, or many other options. I know Clonezilla and SystemRescueCD (for GParted) can boot off of a usb stick. -
Instead of buying an SSD you should consider the new Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid drive. It is nearly as fast as an SSD, but it gives you the space of a regular HDD at a much lower price:
