It's a mechanical issue, you can contact ASUS to get it resolved through a RMA service.
Be sure to state the details clearly so their repair tech does not miss it.

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions for my SSD troubles. I have accepted failure and have decided to use the 500GB factory HDD as my storage drive (instead of the second SSD I was trying to use). Windows is working just fine on my upgraded 128GB mSATA drive, and I was able to re-install and reformat the HDD with no issues.

Side note: I installed the SSD in question in my old laptop and put Linux Mint on it with no problems. It is a fully functional drive, and I have no idea why Windows wouldn't see it in my Zenbook. Oh well! Thanks again, everyone!

Very odd issue. You could maybe sell it and just get a big msata drive.

@clubrob which SSD are you using that could not be detected?

I am warning anyone intending to swap the HDD for an SSD to AVOID the Crucial M500. There seems to be a compatibility issue with Windows 8/8.1. The SSD is recognized in the BIOS but not the Windows 8.1 installer. (Loading Intel AHCI drivers does not fix the issue.)

    I have managed to reproduce this with a friend's UX302 and M500.

Did you try to upgrade it's firmware (link: Crucial.com Product Downloads - Firmware Updates) ?
In the changelog of the last one, it's specifically written: "Fix for potential Haswell compatibility issue (latest Intel platform)".

Ha!!! My SSD was indeed a Crucial M500! Hopefully this info will help other folks, but I'm done fiddling with my stuff. The factory 500GB HDD will be fine for a while. :)

There are barely any reviews of the model out there.
How's the fan on the UX302LG? Ultrabookreview says it's on most of the time.
What I consider silent/acceptable Vaio Duo13/Surface Pro 2/Ativ 9 2012, if anyone happens to have tried any of those.
Under light load; Youtube, 5-10 Chrome tabs, Music, Word, Wifi, HD movies?

I'm working in the library at the Moment with 10-15 Firefox tabs, Acrobat Reader, Word and Itunes open and the fan is absolutely silent. Only one in a while, let's say every 30 minutes it speeds up a bit for about 1 minute. Under this load the runtime is about 6-7 hours.

Edit: i got the UX302LA without the nvidia graphics (i7, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, intel 4400 graphics)

The fan is always on low but it's so quiet I never even notice. Really, it's the quietest ultrabook I've ever owned. For an i7 to stay cool like that is impressive. Now when I use the video card, the fan dows kick up a notch, but that is to be expected. It's still quieter than most though and the laptop stays relatively cool enough to keep on your lap.

I've got the UX302LG and my fan turns on somewhat frequently. It's not obnoxious, but it's noticeable. There was a guy somewhere in the thread who said he managed to undervolt the CPU and get it to run completely silent but I can't find any tools that are compatible with this laptop.

If you want, go into power options and change your max CPU percentage to something other than 100%(try 95%). That usually prevents the CPU from using turbo boost, which is the main heat generator. I've done it with previous laptops that get obnoxiously hot and it's a lot safer than undervolting in my opinion.

Has anyone managed to get ubuntu working with X on a UX302LG?
I've managed to install and EFI version 13.10, but post installation I run into the dreaded black screen after booting into ubuntu. With nomodeset I can boot to command line and updated the nvidia drivers, but still can't start X ("no screens found" or "no such device"). I'm a bit baffled because nomodeset worked during the installation.

Just got the 302LG, and I'm having some issues w/ the audio. It really lags when I change the volume (either w/ the FN keys or via on screen). On top of that, the sound will cut off after I plug in and unplug my earphones.

Does anyone know how to restore windows back to its factory settings?

Just download a copy of Windoes 8 core and reinstall. The CD key should automatically pick up. If not, there are tools out there to view the OEM key embedded in the bios. Another thing to try, before reinstalling Windows, is a latency tool(I use DPC latency checker). That will tell you if a driver is causing the issue. Just disable things one by one until your latency gets noticeably better - that will be your culprit. Chances are it's a conflict with a driver.

A clean install is best for the latency kind of stuff I agree, you will have to search a bit for an ISO though.

Okay, used Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to undervolt the processor by a little bit. Now I'm working on getting the fans silent. Using NoteBook FanControl I can shut one of them off by using the profiles for different model Zenbooks, but there's a second one in the UX302LG that these profiles don't have listed. It continues running in the background. Anyone know how to set up a profile that might give control over it?

Which power options are you referring to? The windows power options are limited to power setting (dim the screen, sleep and that sort of thing), not adjusting the CPU settings.

I haven't received my ux302 yet , but I did some research about Linux compatibility. I found that there is a bug in the kernel that ships with 13.10. I have seen two reported fixes to this :
    1) Install the mainline kernel (which has fixed this bug). If you don't know how to do that follow the instructions here : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds?action=show&redirect=KernelMainlineBuilds
    2) Install 13.04 which reportedly works fine

Approach 1) is more advanced but you'll get latest and greatest stuff. Approach 2) is simpler but you have older stuff (usually does not matter so much)

I myself will be installing Fedora 20 on my machine, but will probably run into the same problem since it has kernel v3.12 which also has the bug. I can let you know if it worked or not by this weekend.

If you click on "change advanced power settings", you can see that there is a "Processor power management" field, where you can change your CPU % for minimum and maximum states.

I didn't have any problems. If I undervolted too much, the PC just shut off and when I rebooted it was back at default values.

    Right now I'm at
    - 0.05 mV CPU
    - 0.05 mV Cache
    - 0.1 mv Graphics

Seems to be working just fine.

when I try to restore windows to factory settings, it give me an error about required disk partition not found. So, that's why I'm thinking my computer doesn't have one.

Also, does anyone have issues w the sound being disabled sometimes upon wake up? The error is sound output device is not found, and it doesn't show up in the device manager either.

Can anyone verify the behaviour of the USB Charger Plus functionality?

    - When laptop is off/sleeping, devices plugged into USB port on the right fast charge (until the battery threshold set in the app)
    - When laptop is on, devices plugged into USB port on the right slow charge

Have updated to 8.1 so it -might- be a driver issue, just wondering whether it was working for anyone else (i.e. fast charging while laptop on) before I investigate further.

Ok, so I've reinstalled windows 8 clean, and updated to 8.1. I've also updated the drivers from asus' website (chipset, ATK, SD card reader, audio, wifi & bluetooth).

Does anyone know what else i'm missing? I have 3 unknown devices still in the device manager..

So I've been waiting patiently for the ux302lg to be available in the UK. The first one that appeared on Amazon was apparently the german model and has since been removed. Now this Asus Zenbook UX302LG-C4007P Intel ® 1800 MHz 750 GB 8192 MB GeForce GT730M: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories is available. I have pre ordered it and it is supposed to be available from the 7th of March. I'm planning on upgrading the SSD to either a 256gb or 520gb.

Any thoughts on the specs of this uk model, the price or what SSD would you recommend?

    Thanks

Did you install the drivers in the "Other" category? The thermal framework driver clears up the top one I believe. It might also clean up the others but you probably didn't install the IMEI driver either. I think I installed them all except smart connect.

    That's normal

That's the same specs as mine except it comes with a 750GB HDD instead of a 500GB like mine. Mine cost $1299 USD. That model you listed converts to roughly $1600. That's a better price than someone mentioned a few weeks ago but it still seems high to me. It's tough to compare prices with the UK because every time I convert prices, it seems like you guys get ripped off on everything. Do you have to pay taxes in addition to that price too? It's too bad that the availability is low because the prices can easily be gouged as well.

You can probably figure what are those devices by looking at their vendor and device IDs (in their properties - details - hardware ids). Once you have those you can google them or just post them here if you need more help.

Tax is included in the price but I agree it is still rather steep when compared with US pricing. The release date of this model on Amazon uk has now been pushed to the 11th of march and I am hoping it doesn't go any further. I was planning on purchasing the Dell XPS 15 but the wait time on that is ridiculous. The alternative I was looking at was the ux301la but no reputable uk dealer has the top configuration available. I'm starting to get really annoyed at the poor availability of these top spec ultrabooks.

So I just bought the UX302LA and I have a couple problems so far. First the brightness seems really low and I know its a problem because when doing the first boot it was super bright and then it went darker, but it says its at full brightness... Another problem I'm having is trying to upgrade to windows 8.1, I cant see it in the store and when I go to the store it completely freezes on me. Any ideas?

Do all of the windows 8 updates. Reboot and see again if there are any remaining updates.
Then go to the app store and try the8.1 upgrade.

One more problem ive been experiencing is randomly while using the laptop it switches to another app(as if you would swipe from the left of the screen).. it happens alot

Guys, I've seemed to have encountered a problem. For some reason the backlighting (keyboard) on my UX302LG no longer works. When I boot it up, the backlights initially come on, but when booted into Windows 8.1 they are disabled. The FN keys simply do not work for the keyboard, yet function fine for screen brightness and volume. Oddly enough, it everything works perfectly when I slot in the original drive. I'm a bit lost as to the cause of error. Might any of you Asus experts have any advice? Thanks, as always!
