I am close to pulling the trigger on this one. After playing around with the floor model at BB I had one small issue. The front is edge one this thing is so sharp. This could get annoying when I rest my wrist when not typing. Has anyone had an issue with the front edge being so sharp? Very minor issue, I know.

I'm pretty happy with the UX302LA I have now. Very light, my first ultrabook so I can't compare build qualities, but definitely from play with some other ones at the store the 302LA is solid. I was initially waiting / hoping for the LG version. But if it is going to be $200 or more for a mediocre graphics chip, it would be hard to justify. Though if it also comes with SSD and a little bit more ram, then maybe. But now, like a few other posters on this thread, I spent $250 more on a SSD and 8GB ram and it is blazing.
and remember, use 1.35V memory, 1.5 won't work -

Wait i thought it also has msata port for ssd cache... Is that true -
-
those of you who cant wait for the ux302LG, it seems Acer has a business ultrabook coming out that is both light and has a dgpu
the Travelmate P645 (14" 1080p matte IPS touch screen, backlit keyboard, AMD 8750m, under 3.5lbs, can use a loading dock.. starts at $950-ish but that's probably the lower res intel HD 5000 model). supposed to be out this month -
The msata is a half size slot. There are not too many half sized msata ssd out there right now, check out amazon and newegg. -

Having half height also limits the capacity and speed unfortunately

With the discrete GPU, does the UX302 weigh slightly more than the model without one?

One quick question! I cant seem to find information on the "matte IPS touch screen."
If it Travelmate P645 comes with touch screen, I will be all over it.
Thanks in advance -
GTRagnarock,
Thanks for the great Pics and information. I'm waiting on the RAM to arrive so I can perform the RAM upgrade. Not replacing the HHD at this time. One question: Do I need to disconnect the battery before uninstalling/installing the new RAM? If so, can that be accomplished without removing the battery? -
MigNole likes this.

This is very interesting and informative thread about a very interesting ultrabook. I am very tempted to pull the trigger except for remaining questions about battery capacity and life. The life reported by several posters is definitely too low for my needs. But, my use profile may give more life than those reports. I guess my main concern is lack of any battery specs for the 302LA. I have seen specs for the 301 and 302LG that state six cell 50 Wh battery. The only thing I have seen for the 302LA is 3 cell and "up to 6 hrs +" battery life. The implication is that the 301LA has a smaller battery capacity and a shorter battery life than the other two models. And the battery life reported here seems to confirm that conclusion.
Can anyone shed any light on 302LA battery capacity and life for a light duty load?
Thanks, Jim -
Where in the F can one find either of these in the USA??? It's almost Christmas!?!
What I'm looking for...ideally...
13.3" screen
1980 x 1080 IPS
Intel Core i7 Haswell
802.11AC WiFi
8GB RAM (user upgradeable preferred)
256GB SSD (user upgradeable preferred)
Intel Iris or nVidia GT 7-series GPU
Ca. 3 lbs.
Is the above config even possible on the UX302? -

Yes it's a small fan/heatsink so you would struggle to tell holding each type of machine in a hand.

Upshot is that I'm very happy with battery life. With my use patterns, running out of battery isn't really a concern. -
The lid does come off, I read that it does not way earlier in this thread. I'm sure someone figured it out at this point.
Bought at BestBuy a few days ago, this one has 24GB miniSATA, and i upgraded the 500gb to a intel 240gb ssd.
the cover is a pain though. You first have the 9 screws you can see. then you have 2 hidden screws under the rubber feet by the hinge side. Pry off the rubber feet, you can stick them again. Prying the cover like that first guy did will bend everything up. then once all *11* screws are out.. You can unhook the curved lid edge from the circular hinge area.
I'm doing one again soon, i returned this laptop for a couple glitches, I want a fresh one.
Also to note. This one has 2GB hard soldered and a 2GB card. I tried a ram stick from my G75 laptop (also 2GB, but i didnt know that before i removed it). The G75 stick was not detected in the UX302. It only saw 2GB total. So note, the UX302 might be picky with ram brands.
*Maybe this was my ram issue: and remember, use 1.35V memory, 1.5 won't work*
My biggest question that someone here will know is, how does the system decide to use that 24GB SSD? It the OS automatically locked into it, cuz it seemed the OS was on the 500GB instead.. Is there a setting in the OS which tells it what to use the 24GB miniSATA for?
-
Which Canadian stores are the most reliable for USA buyers?
-
Anyway, I would be more likely to pull the trigger if Asus would just publish the battery Wh for the 302LA like they do for the 301.
Thanks, Jim -
ok.. now im getting confused.. i successfully cloned my 500gb disk to my 240gb intel SSD using Mercium Reflect. and it reached desktop. but about 3-5 mins later, it goes to bios. now, no matter what i do in bios, i cant seem to get it to leave bios.
i cloned all 5 partitions on the big 500gb disk.
it boot one time only.. but now in bios it doesnt seem to see my new SSD drive...
intel series 530
wonder if its related to AHCI mode in bios, which is the only SATA mode i have available.
FOR ANYONE THAT HAS THIS ISSUE.. the problem seems to be the intel SSD. I tried my Samsung Series 830 256GB disk and it boots perfectly. Put the intel back in, fails to boot. Samsung back in, boots fine. I'll leave the Samsung in.... -
Hey guys.. just wanted to tell you that my order for the 302LG got shipped today and should be delivered in the next days. Seems like Germany is one of the first countries to get the 302lg.
I'll let you know about my first impressions asap -
Probably a simple answer but..
my 24GB mini-SATA card doesnt show up anywhere? Not in my computer.. but "Manage/Disk Management" sees it and calls it "Healthy". Maybe it doesn't have/need a file system? I can't see how anything is using it.. My Page file is set to "C" primary drive, not that mini drive.... is it for the Instant On feature? It always shows 0% used...
also a funny note, my Asus outer box it came in says 16GB m-SATA... but the management screen clearly shows 24GB m-SATA.. strange difference. -

If it's being used for caching/startup it wont appear and be usable, is it actually partitioned in drive management?

Quick question for owners: Can your reverse the scroll direction? And does it support 2 finger right click?
-
i actually just deleted the mini-SATA partition using windows management, and then recreated with an NTFS file system. then it let me assign a drive letter. now i have an additional 22gb ssd storage space. the common idea was if you have a full SSD drive there is no need to use this mini for its intended original purpose anyway.
i saw a 1TB Samsung SSD on newegg for only around $500... now those prices are getting good... -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Just be aware the durability of the drive is not going to be the best.
-
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Low capacity and designed for caching it's not really designed for regular use.
-
hmm i was gonna use it as a storage drive, but maybe i just wont use it at all.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I would not store anything important solely on it.

Acer TravelMate TMP645-MG-54208G25tkk 14" LED Notebook - Intel Core i5 i5-4200U 1.60 GHz - antonline.com
with the ux302lg not out yet nor the acer aspire s3, this and that gigabyte seem to be the only decent haswell 3.5lb or under ultrabook with dgpu available. -

Hey guys,
Just bought my ux302 this past weekend, and I am in love with it. Great build quality, fairly quick for an HDD, above average speakers for a laptop, and good travel on the keyboard. However, I only have only glaring problem. Ever since I updated to Windows 8.1 and I reboot from deep sleep mode, the resolution of my screen seems to get bigger. It seems to go from the standard 1920x1080 to around 3200x1800. Do you guys think this is a fixable issue with a couple of updates or any steps I can get an immediate fix for it? I can send pics if that would help.
Thanks in advance! -

It's been a couple of weeks living with the UX302LA, so here are a few observations, starting with the bad:
1. I bought it a Best Buy and had to return it twice for dead pixels. That is just terrible quality control by Asus. YMMV. (After you buy, look for the dead pixels on bright mono-colored screen like the all green screen for Evernote or the red screen for Netflex)
2. The keyboard is nice, but some of the keys are a little "off". For example, the space key is a little higher on the left side than the right.
3. I'm new to Windows 8, so the learning curve for me has been a little steep coming from XP at home and Windows 7 and work. Not as intuitive an OS as I hoped it would be. It took me a while to figure out how to update to 8.1. (After 3 days it showed up in the Microsoft App Store.) After the update the wifi stopped working and fortunately I knew enough to update the wifi driver, but I think many will need to running to the Geek Squad for help.
4. This is a fingerprint magnet. Thank you Asus for the nice large microfiber cloth!
Pros:
1. Apropos of the software updates, thank you Asus for including an Ethernet adapter, Also the storage/travel case that comes with it is nice.
2 The machine is light and beautiful.
3. It is pretty fast and responsive. Mostly. At times the track pad is unresponsive and I wonder if I'm doing something wrong.
4. This thing should fly after I add some RAM and an SSD. (That will have to wait until after the rest of my holiday spending is complete!)
5. The screen is gorgeous. I think 1080 is the max practical resolution for a screen this size.
6. It has a 25 gb miniSSD. I assume, that explains the fast start-up of about 14 seconds. (Not fast by some standards but fast enough from what I've been used to.)
7. Excellent wifi. An AC router is next on my shopping list. -
Hi,
Theres a sticker on the hdd saying "Warranty Void if Removed" which has me hesitating on wether I should buy the 302LG or not.
But from the picture below it looks like it should be fine to replace it with an SSD, and then just put the original HDD back in if I need to send it in to Asus for service. What do you guys think?
http://www.ultrabookreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/wi-fi-module.jpg
Also, is the built in SSD in the slightly more expensive version much slower than a samsung 830? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Yes, just swap it, but put the original HDD back if you need to send it back to ASUS for service.

ZENBOOK 13.3IN IPS BLUE I7-4500U
They do have an international shipping option when I went to the checkout.
http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00H5C5NJY/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=
It costs USD 1,563.52 with shipping and tax.
I did not place any orders because I don't know if keyboard will have that stupid Canadian bilingual keyboard layout/design and how warranty will work.
If they do ship to the US, please do tell me.
