So I called ASUS USA today.
    1. There is no problem with warranty because they do support the UX302LG [Again, they don't sell it in US]
    2. It is the standard English keyboard, not the Canadian bilingual keyboard
    3. So if there is something wrong with the product, there can't be any third party hardware, such as the memory, you have to replace it with the original and send to ASUS.

Yes all companies require hardware be returned to stock configuration for servicing.

I am very close to pulling the trigger on a UX302LA at Best Buy. But, I need some advice on upgrading from the hdd to a ssd. I have a mSATA ssd that I used briefly in another laptop that had a mSATA ssd that was smaller than I wanted. No problem, I just removed the small mSATA ssd and replaced it with my larger mSATA ssd. BUT, now I would like to use the mSATA ssd to replace the hdd in the UX302LA. Obviously I need an adapter of some kind. I have looked at several adapters on the internet but the connectors that would go where the hdd goes do not look anything like the pins on a 2.5 inch HDD that I have. The HDD I have has a double row of round pins, the adapters I have seen have one row of flat pins.

I would appreciate any insight about what kind of adapter I need to use my mSATA ssd in a UX302LA.

    Thanks, Jim

So any seller in Canada sells it with the standard English keyboard or was that through a specific retailer?
Did you end up finding a reliable retailer that will ship to the US?

    Much appreciated

A question for those who have upgraded memory and/or HDD to SSD. I understand that two screws are under the rubber "feet". Question: Were you able to get the rubber feet off and then replace them without leaving gouges or visible marks on the feet or on the base plate?

    Thanks, Jim

Looks like the UX302LG is now available in Canada. Amazon.ca and a few other sites are selling the UX302LG-DH71T-CA for about C$1500.
This version has a 500GB HDD, which is not optimal for me, but I'm still wondering if I should just bite the bullet and buy it there rather than wait for it to become available in the US.

I did the update yesterday, and no screws were present under the rubber feet.
(I removed one of the rubber feet, and reattached it without any worry, without this being visible then)
When the torx screws are removed, you can easily see if the other 2 screews are present or not under the rubber feet, opening a bit the body of your notebook.
However, the rounded portion near the screen (air vent) is "snapped" to the hinge-screen keyboard, and it is necessary to lever on both sides to remove.

I installed a Samsung 840 SSD PRO 512GB and a SODIMM memory module Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB 1600 mhz. And I also cloned the image restoration system on the SSD module 24 GB onboard, because this image is initially present on the HDD.

This ultrabook is pure happiness :)

Thanks for the reply. Good news about maybe not needing to remove the rubber feet. And good tip about how to complete the removal by levering both sides of the rounded part.

I don't understand about cloning the 24 GB ssd to the new 512 GB ssd. My plan was to clone all of the hdd partitions to the new ssd. Maybe you did a clean install of Win 8.1 to your new ssd?

    Thanks, Jim

I cloned the factory install (the restore that you can use from the bios) from the HDD to the 24 GB SSD, in case of wanting someday to get my Zenbook all new, coming from the box :))
Actually, there will be no need to use this 24GB as you leave the HDD for a brand new SSD

(Coming from an UX31A (128GB SSD) i can confirm that an HDD in the UX302LA slows him really hard !!!)

And i did a fresh install on the 512 GB SSD (Windows 8.1).
    Running smooth.... :)

All I found on Google was the company was too new to have any rating. Another company called electronicmegastore did have very bad ratings. I suppose the names are close enough to be the same company. Change name and get a new batch of customers to rip off.

I just bought the ux302, and noticed a small issue with the trackpad.. When tapping (lightly) on the right side on the trackpad, it gives a little "click" sound, as if the trackpad is not sitting 100% thightly... The left side does not have the same issue. Starting to get a bit annoyed with the clicking sound everytime i touch the trackpad.. :p

Anyone else experienced the same thing, or is it just me?

    Hi,

I got the UX302LG this week, from FrontierPC in Vancouver. They had great service, shipped from stock in Toronto to Vancouver in one day. They also sold me a 3 year ASUS extended manufacturer's warranty.

Nice machine, only one complaint: The LED lights under the keyboard are visible when using the laptop from a normal (on the lap) angle. A small thing, but so annoying that I prefer to turn off the lighting altogether.

Anyway, I want to upgrade the RAM. It currently has 4GB soldered, +4GB in an upgradeable slot. I would like to upgrade to 12GB by installing an 8GB.

I've read somewhere that sometimes more than a certain amount of RAM is not supported, even though you can physically install it.

    1. How would I find out if 12GB is supported?
    2. If 12 GB will work, do I need to match the specs/manufacturer with the existing soldered module somehow, or can I just stick any 8GB module in?

    Thanks!

Turn the leds off under the keyboard using fonction "fn" key with F3 (or F4 to switch on and bright up the leds)

About the ram, you better use the same specs as the 4GB soldered (should be PC3 12800 (1,35V))
Then 4GB or 8 GB module should be fine.

Since it's currently running 4+4, and I'll be switching to 4+8, do you think I can expect a significant performance (speed) decrease due to the mismatched sizes & brands?

I guess it doesn't matter that much, I need more RAM in any case.

    Thanks

    Hey guys,

I'm a longtime Asus fan. Been using Asus laptops for 6yrs. This year, I want to get the 302 at bestbuy. I have read all the posts in this thread and it has been very informative. I just have a few questions for the experts here please excuse by noobity.

    1. I too think 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD are a bit obsolete and want to upgrade them. But I have never actually done this with any of my laptops before. Considering that, should I get the bestbuy $100/yr tech support? Or is it going to be fairly enough to do it and I should save that money?

    2. Where can I buy the specific toolset for the swap if you recommend I do it on my own?

    3. Any recommendations on the exact model of RAM and SSD? (Amazon links will be appreciated)

    Thanks!

I too am a fan of Asus and shopping around for a new one. I haven't figured out why the Best Buy UX302 even compares to the Microsoft Store UX31LA. Same price and nearly same specs except you GET 8GB Ram and a 128GB SSD. Small SSD but if you dont need the space then you don't need to do any modifications.

The UX31LA is last years design with this years specifications. If I am not mistaken the 8GB is soildered on board and the 128GB SSD uses a somewhat proprietary connection that is nearly impossible to find.

Yeah, I found a review or two that say the same thing thing. RAM soldered and some proprietary SSD. So, no upgrade. And it is last years design for third gen CPU, updated to fourth gen, so one might wonder about performance.

Someone needs to start a thread specifically documenting how to upgrade the RAM and install an SSD with a listing of components that actually work. Also document how to reinstall the OS and required Asus software.
    You would be a STAR!

Thanks for the tip. I huddled into Bestbuy and bought it. After I was finished with the setup though, I saw a very very thin vertical line of bluish pixel sized dots on my screen. I don't know what it is but it is visible when you look at it from < 10" from the screen. It is visible when I restart and when the Windows 8 metro screen. Tried taking a picture but they came out really bad. Going today to return this.

It's possibly the screen problem, or the LVDS connection.

I agree with you, that would be awesome. A lot of that information is available in this thread, but you have to go through a lot of pages to search for it.

I bought this laptop yesterday and am upgrading both. I bought these:

    8 GB RAM Newegg.com - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-1600C9S-8GRSL
120 GB SSD Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Now my question is: Will getting this CAS latency 9 RAM be a problem since there's already some onboard RAM? Should I cancel the order and get a CAS latency 11 RAM?

Edit: I did some searching and it turns out that the RAM will work, but it's not optimal. I'm chatting with Newegg to get my RAM switched to a CAS latency 11 RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231727

Useful thread explaining why CAS latency 11 RAM is optimal: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/678748-asus-ux32vd-replacement-ram-2.html

Just purchased the UX302 from Best Buy. I am not pleased with the machine for a number of reasons. The auto dimming isn't very responsive. There is significant flex along the center of the keyboard and the track-pad is VERY loud. The most disturbing aspect though is that the bottom cover cannot come off without damaging / removing the rear two rubber feet. DUMB. DUMB. DUMB. I bought this machine with the intent to swap the HDD for SDD and upgrade the RAM. The fact that the bottom cannot be easily removed is an absolute deal breaker. Nonetheless, this machine should have an SSD, no questions asked. The RAM I could spare for now. I am returning this to Best Buy today and will replace it with the HP Spectre 13. The chassis on the HP seems sturdier, the screen is equally as pleasant, and it already has the SSD installed as well as Windows 8.1. I'd gladly pay the extra $200 to avoid the headache of upgrading this machine. Not to mention the fingerprint magnet that this machine is.

Thanks. I was worried and went to return it and I was shocked when I switched it on and showed it to the customer service rep at bestbuy, the issue wasn't there anymore. I went ahead with the return anyway. Although I wanted a swap, the rep didn't let me do it she said I will have to buy a new one. Waiting for bestbuy to return the 799+tax so I can re-purchase another one.

I picked on up from Best Buy last night for 799, nice deal!. I had to do an immediate exchange, because the first one had very back backlight bleeding on the right hand side, where the stray ray extended all the way to the middle of the screen. The second one is better but the backlight bleeding is still there, mainly at the bottom edge and lower corners, extending a bit to the sides.
I wondering if I should try another exchange, but I really don't want to fall into that pit. Is a shame since the screen is so wonderful in other aspects: nicely saturated colors and very bright. The 1080p res seems perfect for this size screen.

It seems spiffy enough even without an SSD and 4GB of RAM. My thinkpad t400s has 8gb RAM and an SSD, but programs seem to load up just as quickly the Asus as they do with my thinkpad. I probably won't upgrade it any time soon, but we'll see. The keyboard is very responsive and accurate with a nice click and tactile feedback. That says alot coming from an avid thinkpad user :) I'm not as productive with the trackpad as I am with the trackpoint on my Thinkpad, but I'm sure time will change that.

The sound from the speakers is loud and punchy, MUCH MUCH better than my T400s

Build quality is top notch. No squeaking, flexing, or overhangs. I saw a review on youtube complaining about sharp edges...I don't what he was talking about. Nothing cuts into my hands while I type. I'm 6'1" with largish hands. I like the styling of the Asus as well. "Handsome" and understated. I wish it was all black though.

All and all, I think this is a keeper. II'm curious about the battery life, but from what I've read, battery life is comparable with most Haswells. I was about to pull the trigger on a Vaio Pro 13 which is suppose to have excellent battery life and a pound lighter the Asus, but I decided not to after reading about the widespread and unresolvable Wifi issues.
I'll try and overvolt this baby when I have the time. I have my t400s undervolted using RMClock...anyone know if RMClock works with Windows 8.1 and newer Intel chips?

    Couple of questions:

    1) I'm coming a non-LED notebook, TN display laptop which has a perfectly uniform screen. I bought this Asus on a whim; I wasn't really in the market for a new notebook and haven't been looking at too many display models. But are all LED/IPS notebooks displays "bleeders"? Does it get better with time?

    2) The keyboard backlight turns on after I resume from sleep. Is there a way to disable the keyboard backlight so that it doesn't come back on when resuming from sleep?

Maybe I'm wrong about his, but don't the rubber feet have sticky tape on them where you can stick them back on after upgrading? I thought this thing was a easy to upgrade but haven't tried it yet. Can you elaborate on your upgrade experience please

I ordered my UX302LA yesterday and picked it up at the local Best Buy this morning. Mine is perfect so far, no keyboard flex or any bending between the keys, No light bleed anywhere that I can see, no dead pixels or any other screen blemish that I can see, the wireless internet connection gives me the same speed that my wired desktop does which is about 15% more than my ISP promises. And my wife who is a high speed touch typist raves about the keyboard and the beautiful blue color. She wants one! And she is an I Pad enthusiast. Happy camper here!

    Hi,

I tried to upgrade the RAM on my UX302LG and failed. It currently has 4GB soldered + 4GB in a slot. (CPU-Z at the very bottom of this message shows the specs of the current 4GB piece)

    I tried installing this:
    8192MB Kingston DDR3 Value RAM DDR3 - 1600 (PC3 - 12800), single

but Win 8.1 didn't see it. Maybe because it is 1.5V? Does this make sense? I returned it and am thinking about trying one of the following. Recommendations?

    Samsung: SAMSUNG 8GB 204 pin DDR3L-1600 SO-DIMM - Apple ID: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör

    Global Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz PC3-12800 204-PIN SODIMM: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör

At that price, I figured they'd have an SSD for primary storage. It also claims the hard drive is 500 GB in the title but 750 GB in the specs list. The advertised weight is lower than Best Buy's. Is that accurate? I don't see how adding in a video card could possibly reduce the weight.

The GT 730m is nothing special. It's weaker than an Iris Pro (HD 5200). I don't see why nobody is making a 13 inch laptop with Iris Pro graphics. Is it impossible? I doubt it would have cost much more than putting a GT 730m into an ultraportable.

    I don't know about the 302LA, but my 302LG has 500GB and weighs 1.56kg.

Yeah, you need 1.35V RAM. Both of the ones you linked should work, and they also match in speed and latency which is good.

Yeah, I just did a shutdown and power on. If I look closely, I do see a very slight grey haze in some areas right at the bottom.

    Regards, Jim
