M3Rocket & bourney0, thank you for your replies, I greatly appreciate it. That confirms what I suspected - at it's price point the UX31 is going to have some shortcomings, and if it's only the screen, for most that won't matter.

Can't really blame ASUS, even if I'm disappointed that they seem to not make notebooks any more with a good panel. If you saw the V1J at it's time, that panel was just unbelievable. But it cost nearly twice the UX.

The two rigs I saw had absolutely no angles that were even half-decent, let alone correct. But as you said, people have different priorities and I think the UX31 is amazing for it's price!

I've never had the issue, but I've seen systems that had, and a new mobo was the best solution to replace a faulty HDMI port.

Have same problem, Samsung M2 will not work on USB 3.0. I also upgraded to Windows Ultimate (MSDN key). Tried flashing the BIOS en downgrading the Fresco drivers. Did not help.

I give up and hope for an update from Fresco.

Just got my UX31 with the i5 and 128GB Sandisk SSD. It has the Elantech trackpad. I'm loving it so far and I haven't had any issues with it. Just thought I would let people know that not everyone is having issues with this laptop.

By the way, what is Fn+V supposed to do? I uninstalled a fair amount of the Asus bloatware so that may be why it does nothing for me. I'm guessing it opens the webcam utility.

I'm not all that concerned about the drive speed even though I "wish" it were better. I'm upgrading from a 12 year old 366 Sony Z505 so this laptop as is should be a huge improvement. I just wish the screen had not been DOA (it had all kinds of lines running across it both horizontal and vertical) when I got it so I could be another one of the guys that never posted here... :p
The online shop that sold it to me has it back now so it is just a waiting game to see when they get more new ones back in stock...

Hey, for the ppl who did a fresh install. What did you have to download/keep, so the laptop functions properly? and is it possible to make a recovery file on a backup drive? or does it only work on dvds?

Regarding my recently ordered UX31e-DH72: Can anyone direct me to where I can find the TRIM procedure for the AData XM11 SSD; and if an SSD firmware update is necessary for the 256GB XM11 and, if so, where are the instructions. I found no mention of the XM11 model on the AData website.

Solid State Drive, Welcome to ADATA

    Thanks.

With W7, you can use "Backup and Restore" to create a system image to a backup drive - which you could later use to recreate your system as it was prior to backup.

You would also need to have created a "system repair disc", which is also a function contained in the W7 "Backup and Restore" utility.

    Happy Holidays Everyone.

Has anyone seen the new UX31E-XH71 / UX31E-XH72 Zenbooks? I am wondering what's the difference between the XH and DH? The only thing I can tell is the XH comes with windows Professional and theres one that has an I7 processor with a 128 SSD. I am wondering if I should cancel my order with bestbuy and just bite the bullet and get the UX31E-XH71 since my laptop is still on backorder (UX31-DH53). The only thing that would sux is I got the UX31-DH53at a good price $1049. If the UX31E-XH72 (I7 CPU / 256 SSD) come with the ADATA SSD i would jump on it but i highly doubt it. I have been waiting forever on my order but it's looking like I may not get it until 2012.

Does anyone know if there is any benefit to enabling UEFI boot in the BIOS?
I am thinking of re-installing a fresh copy of win 7 to see if my wifi problems will go away.

I have just installed a new win pro 64 bit, with latest wifi drivers (BIOS was updated prior to reinstallation).

Didn't fix the problem at all.

Curiously, the wifi problem only occurs when streaming video. Whether it's hulu or youtube, often the video just stops loading (keeps on "buffering"). I have monitored the network utilization in task manager, and sure enough, it drops to 0% whenever it stops loading (check the attached image to see what I mean). I always have to manually disconnect/reconnect the wifi signal to force it to load and play, only to have it stop again minutes later.

I have tried this on internet explorer 9 and the latest chrome, and the same thing happens. Disconnects often when streaming video.

There is no problem with regular web browsing. I visit multiple sites everyday without a drop, and have downloaded large files over wifi (like win 7 pro off msdn) without a hitch.

Does anyone else have a similar problem? I can't figure out if it's a driver issue or a hardware error.

    2 findings:
    - I uninstalled today Intel rapid storage technology software and driver (version 10.08) so windows used the built-in msachi driver. The WEI jumped from 5.9 to 7.3 but AS SSD performance and the general feel did not change. In fact AS SSD's performance for the 4k dropped from 9mb to 7mb.

    - The other I noticed is when watching youtube on the default yutube screen size and whenever I move the cursor with the touchpad the video gets paused slightly and keeps doing that as long as I am moving the cursor but this disappears when I enlarge youtube's screen size. I have the latest touchpad driver from Asus's website and its Selentic. Forgot to say, I was on battery. Any clue for this?

I'd format SSD, then reinstall using the recovery disks.

IMO if everything else works I won't bother swapping the sandisk version for the adata version. Right now I have adata but wifi seems to only work at close range. Maybe it's because there's not enough power to the wifi card (I have it on maximum power in power options, etc. already).

Also, streaming video works fine if I connect my UX31 to my two year old laptop that is on the same network through connectify, but not if I connect it directly to the router. Weird.

Hey, if I made recovery files into iso files, can I use an usb stick to boot up the recovery? or is the iso files used to burn to a dvd as recovery disk on a different pc? i dont have an external usb dvd writer, so im not sure how I can make a recovery disk. The recovery disk can be used to restore back to factory settings, even if I install a different windows correct? please help and thanks!.

Thanks for your input. i just did a fresh install with the recovery partition (F9-button, when the asus-logo appears).

I won't send the asus back because of the slower ssd. I got three scratches on the unibody, maybe the ux31 was already used (amazon.de).

yes, external monitor works with the lid closed.

this is a feature of windows action when the lid is closed, not the laptop hardware.

you mean the unit is shutdown with the lid closed and it still starts itself ?

is the power light off on the power key and light on the side off.

Are you sure the PC is shutdown? When you close the lid, on the right side of your laptop, the white DEL should blink, this mean it is in Sleep Mode.

Hello. I'm considering buying UX31, but thinking also of N55SF/N45SF.

I need a notebook for development in Visual Studio / PyCharm and I'm used to having lots open tabs in browser, so there is question of perfomance: for example, will i be able to watch HD video while coding in VS, or not?

    Thank you in advance :)

I'm coding in Visual Studio 2010 with OpenCV (Computer Vision) with the integrated webcam and it's smooth.

The UX31 runs TF2 and Portal 2 smoothly.

The Microsoft Store (if you have one locally near you), finally got their UX31s in stock (the i7 model).

It's $1449 but they have a 25% off coupon that will expire this week... that's about $1100.

(apologies if this has already been posted)

I just bought a UX31 from Microsoft Store yesterday. But when I try to back up the windows to a ISO it says partition is missing, so I went to computer management and found my SSD has two partitions, but the second partition that normally hosts the recovery image is totally empty, nothing inside. Now how would I go about getting the recovery iso that I can burn to a dvd?

For those people who are using USB drive to fresh install Windows, did you get your windows 7 from the recovery? does that means I am out of luck?

    Hey guys,

I found a UK stockist who sell the UX31, but I have two questions I was hoping someone could help me with:-

    1) ADATA make the superior SSD, but can this be checked by not opening up the box?

    2) Elantec make the superior track pad, but can this be checked by not opening up the box?

i.e. I wish to phone/visit the stockist and have them confirm for me that the UX31 has the superior components before I buy it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Someone in this thread mentioned that they have an external monitor working with the lid closed..

I am having issues with this and i'm hoping someone can give me a quick fix. When I am watching movies on my tv via the hdmi out i cannot close the lid without the computer sleeping.

In power management advanced settings i have lid close action set to "do nothing" yet it still sleeps. What am I doing wrong?

Anyone have their U31 randomly shut down on them? I was working with the UX31 tonight and while I was working I saw the screen went blank, and the power light went out. Then when I power on the laptop again, it says windows was unexpectly shut down and this is all while the battery is fully charged and power with AC adapter. So anyone experienced this type of random shut down at all?

Had the same thing, fixed it by changing the lid closing action at another place: "System Settings --> Hardware & Sound --> Energy Settings --> Change what happens when you close the lid" (Translated from german, so there can be some differently named options -_-)

After also changing it at this place, it works for me.

Got my UX31 from Microsoft Store for 25% off.

Love it. But I am having problem burning recovery disc/iso. It just tell me "Recovery partition does not exist".

After google around, there is a guild to run "ChangeHD" from ASUS/AI under Program Files which suppose to un-hide the recovery partition but it does not work on mine.

Has anyone have the same problem and how can I solve this problem?

Thanks in advance for any help.
