I think the reason some are looking for ssd replacement options is due to the very poor performance of the larger-size ssd which the dearer UX31 seems to be saddled with.

Does anybody know if I can downgrade the BIOS version?

I'm thinking to do this to try to solve the problem that I have with the not recognizing the SSD. I have seen that one of the BIOS versions may have corrected the issue but I already have the last one... would like to try all of them one at a time.

    Any help?

Can you connect the UX31 to your flatscreen tv wirelessly? Is it a big/expensive job?

Awesome! I can already watch movies from my computer on the tv via PS3, but the fan on the console is a bit too loud. Really looking forward to streaming movies wirelessly through the zenbook to the tv!

Yes, I could, but only to a newer version... when I try to reflash it (using the EasyFlash on BIOS) it says me the version is too old and does not continue.

    Any idea?

    Hey guys,

I haven't read through the whole thread so I don't know if anyway has the same problem I have. I got my UX31E today. When I put it on a plane ground, only 3 of the 4 notebookfeet touch the ground. The right one under the hand rest is a litte bit in the air. When I put my hands on the machine, it tilts a bit an the foot on the upper left is a bit in the air. Really annoying, I will send it back and want a new machine.

Anybody had the same problem? The Base Unit seems to be a bit distorted.

Anandtech stated today news from CES:
"ASUS switched touchpads to an Elan made model late last year. While some early owners received the previous version, if they complain to ASUS they'll apparently be able to swap it in for an updated model."
Anyone done this or have an opinion if it's worth it?
I have the Sentelic touchpad in my UX31E.
But in my expereince ASUS (phone) support is difficult to work with.

Here is something thats werid with my UX31. Normally it takes about 2-3 hrs to charge my UX31 from 29% to 98%. Today I plugged in the charger about two hours ago when it was at 28% and so far its only up to 59%. I had this happen couple of times. Anyone have this same issue? It doesnt happen alot but this is twice now in this past couple of days.

    Hi,
Does anybody here ever needed spare parts for the UX31E?
I'm 99% sure that my SSD has gone (Sandisk 256GB) and will have to buy a new one... I don't even know the specifications to look for it, many reasearches returns external and enclosured SSDs hard drives.
    Any help?

Anyone been able to get Asus to swap out their Sentelic machine for one with an Elan pad?

Also, are they still using the SanDisk drive on all 256GB models? The performance is horrible (whole machine stutters/freezes, 3-4 MB photos takes 5-10 sec to load in Windows Photo Viewer, etc.).

Speaking of SanDisk SSDs: I ordered a ux31 with the model number RY012V - does that guarantee that I'll be getting the better Sandforce SSD instead, since that's the one featured in every review with the RY012V model?

Few days ago I accidentally sat down on my laptop (case has the same colour as the couch  ) I noticed my touch pad had some play on it when I lightly tapped it. I carefully bent it outwards from the back side and the annoying play was gone. So there's obviously a bit of room to play with distortion and who knows you can do a little trick with yours, but it shouldn't be like that out of the box.

I had the same issue with my UX31 with the ADATA SSD. Boots up quick. Impressive. But once you actually use it, wow... HELLA SLOW. Maybe it has something to do with the ASUS webstorage slowing things down? Don't know.

It's pretty pathetic for a SSD which is suppose to be quicker. My freaking HP DV1000 2ghz core2 duo 200gb Samsung 5400rpm drive runs smoother than the i5 with SSD?

Something is not right. Which is why I returned it and am still using my 6 year old laptop on XP with zero issues.

Booting up quick means nothing when everything else is slow. (surfing web, opening programs, etc etc). What the point? Wow silver and it looks pretty? Ok....

Also uninstalled the games and bloatware, and my Sandisk 128GB (WEI 7.4) is working like a charm. Using Google Chrome, amazingly quick. Even websites never visited before are almost instantly loaded.

I'm having no problems with my ADATA 128GB UX31.

Everything loads up fast as hell and there's been zero stuttering, etc. I'm not doing anything that's too intensive, but I reckon I "never" will be.

I was the first one to be very dissapointed with Asus by changing the ADATA for a SANDISK for my 256 GB drive on my UX31E.

I´ve been using real work experience on my laptop for 1 week now and I can tell the notebook performs preety good.

Maybe its because I´ve formated and installed plain Windows (without any crap). Also made sure to have latest BIOS updated and all latest drivers from Asus Website.

One more tip, an asus application to control how the NB should work when on battery and when plugged works preety nice. Its kind of a "button" on the upper right side of the screen (almost like a Windows 7 widget) which allows me to switch between power saver mode and Full Performance mode. Whenever I am plugged in and with the 2 monitors I use at my office, I switch it to Full Performance and the NB will perform really good. Switching from Outlook screens to different browsers and RDP sessions is preety fast.

I know the machine could just perform better with the ADATA version, but I feel kind of fighting against the wind mills (although I complained with Asus on how dissapointed I am). I decided not to waste more time and just enjoy my new laptop. The next one will be better for sure :)

Hi all.. this is the ultimate forum.. love this thread when there are some problems with the ux31. Been reading a lot before i acquired my own UX31, but now i do have a few problems myself.

    Here we go.

Problem number 1: Sometimes when i turn on my machine i can't use my keyboard at all. I have a password on my computer, which means i cannot type it, and i have to restart my computer a few times before the keyboard works.

Problem number 2: I downloadet the newest drivers for my elan touchpad, but its still not working correct. For exampel i have to open settings for mouse and click the button set all to default, before i can use the shortcuts like volume, touchpad on or off, scrolling with 3 fingers etc. This i have to do everytime i turn the machine on.

Problem number 3: how can i change the funny way my touchpad i acting. if im on google chrome and i reading a webpage and after a while i want to use the touchpad its like the curser freezes and i have to click before i can move it to another location.

Anyone Experienced the same and how do i fix it?

I did a clean windows install and i think i have downloaded the most importent updates such as instant on, atkacpi, drivers for elan and so on. i havent changed the bios. i have the version 2.09. Is is important that i do download the 2.10

Hope some off you can help me.. Thanks for your time

No Lag whatsoever......If you are having issues (lag) when uninstalling a program you have a major issue with your UX31. Even if the UX31 has a regular hd there should be no issue when uninstalling a program.

When I go to the control panel and load the uninstall tool, it takes forever for the programs to load. When browsing the web too. There is just lag.

It boots up really quick and it still scores a 7.9 on the Windows Experience index.

Anyways, I can't do anything about it now since I returned it.

Are you sure you have an Elan touch? Maybe you are installing the wrong driver?

Try to completly uninstall your driver with the device manager, reboot, and reinstall.

And for your keyboard, I don't know. I don't think it's a keyboard prob but more like a Windows problem.

    Hi,

Try changing the settings of the touchpad, just dubble click on the incon in the taskbar on the right. Then u get a menu with al the options, the last tab should be some detection stuff, it turns off ur touchpad while typing so ur cursor doesnt move ( at least thats what I tought it was for ). just turn that option off, maybe that helps.

the other problems ur encountering, i have no clue

    greetings

    hi,

can you explain why your disk shows up as 119GB when mine is 112GB.

i deleted the recovery partition and windows partition manager shows 112gb as the total space.

    thanks.

So how can it be a 128Gb disk if it only has 120Gb of space leaving 112Gb after partition.

Also the benchmark posted a few pages ago shows the sandisk with 70% faster write speeds for continuous files, but slower for 4k.

And you get an extra 8GB.

File system, MBR, etc etc there's a lot of stuff hidden. Also, sometime, when you partition and delete partition you lose space and you will see un-format partition of a couple of MB.

And eventually you will lose space because of Windows "growing" in size. Temp file, Recovery image, cache and other crap here and there left by uninstalled software...

Just received my UX31 after two weeks of waiting. It has the SanDisk SSD.

I'm really disappointed and annoyed right now. I'll try using the machine for a week and decide if I should return it for a new one...

EDIT: Just called support at the store I bought it from. They said I couldn't replace it if I open the box and they can't guarantee that I'd get the SandForce SSD if I decide to return it. They did offer to give me a good price on a replacement SSD called "Corsair Pro 128GB SSD" if I was unhappy with the Sandisk one.

Is it possible to replace the Sandisk SSD with the Corsair Pro 128GB one? Does anyone know if the Corsair Pro is any good, if it's on par or worse/better than the Sandforce? I'd really, really appreciate all your help on this one, I'm absolutely gutted right now :(

prepseb, that is not the reason.

after further research I found that 8GB is reserved for garbage collection and other process to maintain ssd performance.

the sandisk unit has an aplication which lets the user set this size, and it seems be default its 0 hence 119gb showing up in crystal disk mark.

on the sandforce its not set by the user and can not be accessed.

That's correct. To gain the 8GB I deleted the garbage on C: I think it visible by showing the operation files.. Not sure though.

Anyway, I was trying out removing / updating various drivers and programs last night. At a certain point I noticed starting up was slower and the Zenbook became less responsive. After doing a windows experience index test my Sandisk was only worth 5.9 instead of 7.5. Luckily I could get back to an earlier restore point and it works great again. Back to 7.5 :) Now finding out what's the cause of this.
