I'd say for ultrabooks the difference will be significant.

Lower wattage = More battery life

Better iGPU = Better GPU performance in ultrabooks

    T'is the year of ultrabooks!

i think i'm going to wait, but the main reason that i want the ux31 is because of its looks. it looks freakin' hot! so hopefully it will be released with the ivy bridge in a not too distant future, cause i can't wait to get my hands on rose gold *evil grin*

That's great, Scrappy. My wireless has been pretty much faultless since I disabled the Wireless Console a couple of weeks ago, and it's good to know it fixed the problem for you. I noticed that the wireless connected momentarily during start up, and then switched off, so I suspected some king of bloatware issue.

I lot of people have been criticizing the Atheros card, but have not investigated whether a program may be the source of the problem. Whatever the merits or otherwise of Atheros cards, the card does not appear to me to be the cause of the wireless issues reported for the UX-21 or UX-31.

I'm not sure what the cause of the problem with Wireless Console 3 is, but suspect it is some kind of power management strategy.

FWIW, my i7 model also show 4 processes in Task Manager. I thought i7 with hyper threading was supposed to show 8 processes?

Seeing as the original links for the iso's are gone, I can host them if wanted. It would only be a small dent in my servers traffic.

icydud, i am giving the link out over pm only as they are stored on my home network.

i am getting 1 request every day so far.

would be great to have somewhere public to put them so everyone can access them anytime

Numa, do you have any idea what brand of anti-glare they used? I'd love to get this done.

    Only for i7 quad cores.

    From wikipedia:
Hyper-threading - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In other words, the maximum number of concurrent threads on a HT processor is twice as many as the number of cores.

All ULV versions of i7 and i5 are presently dual cores.

I ordered anti-glare film from NuShield, got the DayVue product and installed it myself. It was almost perfectly cut to fit, but I did need to do a tiny sliver of a trim on one corner. I had a couple bubbles caused by dust, but was able to get rid of them. The reduction in glare is very good, and the screen still seems very clear.

so, in other words, you would recommend buying an anti glare film...i'll keep this in mind when i'll buy the ux31. but then again it's a pain in the trying to apply it perfectly. i remember having some difficulties when i was applying the screen protector on my galaxy s2. i guess you could, alternatively, do it professionally as a previous user stated, the question is just where...are there any swedish users here? if so, do you know where this can be done?

The company installed the "Vikuiti ARMR-200" film made by 3M. I don't know if the film is available in the US. It's a pretty good film. The display has about 97% of the brightness before installing the film, contrast and colours aren't influenced. There are huge differences between the films, so take a good one.

It let mine install by the german company "TDComponents". This is the website (only german):

Laptop Screen | Notebook LCD Display, LCDScreen und Displayreparatur | Notebookscreen, Laptopscreen, Screens

    They did a great job.

I have read the sticky post about bloatware, but what would the UX31 community think is necessary to uninstall and/or disable? Thanks.

Getting tired of my UX31 taking 4 hours to charge the battery from 36% to 72%. Quick charge is enable, but the weird thing is that its so random. One day it will fully charge (25%-99%) in 3 hrs and then like today 4 hrs and its barely at 72%.......

Hey guys, I have the UX31 with elantech touchpad that i bought last november. I was wondering if any of you got problems with the 2 finger scrolling.
When I'm on youtube viewing a video and I click the video player, i would try to scroll up or down to view comments but while that action is happening, the video also fast forwards or rewinds which is pretty annoying at times. I have to click on a blank space on the web page to stop that from happening.
This also occurs when i'm viewing facebook pictures. If i try to view comments by using the two finger scroll, the pictures would skip to the next few images people put up which i find the 2 finger scroll useless and must use the arrow keys to move down the page.
On microsoft word, i try the exact same thing with the two finger scroll and i find my typing cursor to move forward or backwards across the words i typed out.
It seems like one thing is what cause all of these problems. So my question to you is, Do you guys have this problem also? If you did, how did you fix it?

I have the same problem (two finger scrolling) on facebook and youtube, I'm using opera 11. In word 2010 I do not have the issue of moving cursor. Didn't look for a solution yet, but I know many touchpad drivers don't use the windows scrolling function but use their own implementation. Another cause might be that we are also scrolling sideways a little when scrolling down and this causes it... I gues a driver update could fix it or maybe dissabeling sideward scrolling/panning

Try charging it with it shutdown. Seems to help somewhat.

Mine takes 3 hours for a full charge.

    1 hour to 50%,

    1 hour 50% to 85%

    1 Hour 85% to full

I will be the owner of a new UX31 D52 laptop on Monday. From glancing over these forums I know that I will need to remove a good deal of bloatware and I will (most likely) need to update my Bios to get the touchpad working properly. My questions:

    1. I know the laptop comes with its own sleeve case, but I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for a laptop bag with compartments for peripherals, charger, etc.

    2. Any other tips/tricks for new owners?

I walked into the apple shop in my local microcenter, and they had some bags aimed at the 13" macbook air. I ended up with a padded sleve from STM: This one. The main pocket is a very good fit, and the side pocket has room for charger & mouse & adapters. I prefer a padded case with side pockets rather than ultra-slim neoprene sleeves, since I do like to carry a mouse and the power adapter with me.

I don't have these problem with Sentellic 9.1.7.7.

Maybe there is something in the mouse config for 2-finger left/right that interferes with the scrolling.

    The simple answer is yes.

The issue is getting mini hdmi lead that doesnt cover part of the mini vga port.

I forced both in but it puts stress on the connectors.

while using both the internal LCD must be disabled.

    Ie, it has 2 ramdacs.

Thanks DecWorld. I hadn't even thought about 2 leads not fitting!

I really wanted one large monitor but reading through your earlier posts about 2560x1440 output I was searching for more screen space with two monitors instead. Did you ever get it to work?

    No,

the maximum you will get is that posted a few pages ago.

so you lose a few hundred lines one way or the other. But it actually looks OK.

it seems its the dell u2711 that wont support sub 50hz with the revision a09 monitor, even though the asus will output 2560x1440@35hz.

the 27" still at its reduced resolution is much higher than 1920x1080.

Pity , I was looking at buying the same dell or 27" Hazro. Doesn't seem to make sense to spend the extra if you're not getting the pixels. I think Ill go with the 1080. Thanks for the info again. Much appreciated

Im from Brasil and a parent brought me the Zenbook that i got from Amazon.
I paid the tax of $250 etc.. Asus Brasil warranty is horrible one of the worst around here... but they told me that Brazil dont belong to Global Warranty.

So i got the laptop test it with dead pixel buddy and everything was great ... 2 days later i noticed that a grey spot, almost like dust is underneath the screen, how can this be? i googled it and i found a billions of iMac users with the same problem.

does anyone have a clue about it?

Thought I found a way to disable horizontal scrolling, but it also disables vertical scrolling and visa versa.

To get the extra options in the menu you'll need to enter your registry so make sure you have a fall back :)

    Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech\SmartPadDisplay

Change the TwoFingerScroll_Display value from 0 to 1 and then open up the Elantech menu from the taskbar. I need to keep doing this step because it automatically resets the menu once it's closed.

Hi all! I've had my ux31 256gb i7 sandisc for a week now AND I LOVE IT! I only have one question. I've installed SWTOR and it runs really good, the only thing that bothers me is the CPU temp on ~80 C when been running the game for some time, everything works perfectly and I don't have any problems at all. It only gets hot.

    Now:
Is running a game like SWTOR on a computer like this going to harm the computer anyhow or is there inbuild mechanism that will prevent harm due to powerdemanding usage? Can I be happy and play along?

Many thanks and thanks for all the information found in this thread!

A compact laptop running at 80 degrees for several hours does raise this question indeed. I personally think it's not harmful. It's still 20 degrees cooler than the max temperature and perhaps the aluminium body does help a bit (rather than plastic which doesn't conduct heat at all).

80c is fine for the unit to operate at.

my big concern is how fast the battery will die at that temperature.

i use an angled stand with fans in purely to ensure th battery stays cool.

for those not in the know, the life of a li-ion battery reduces over time, this is accelerated by temerature and charge level.

as example a battery stored at 40c with 100% charge will loose 80% of its capacity within 12 months.

but the same battery stored at 20c will loose less than 10%

and stored at 20c with 40% charge will loose less than 4%.

ie, a hot battery dies quickly.

so assembly temperature is more worrying than processor.

Ok, so constant ~80C is ok for the CPU/GPU to work in. Regarding the battery, can't you just get ASUS to put in a new one if the other one starts to sack? I don't know how theese inbuilt things work.

By the way don't you guys agree that the screen light on this thing is awsome, best I've seen!

    Thanks!

Micro HDMI to DVI Cable for EVO 4G Droid X XT800 & XOOM | eBay

This is the cable I use. It is a snug fit swih the VGA plug so I was thinking of removing a very small amount of rubber off of the connector. Running two monitors 1920x1080 on the UX31 works great. I was very surprised it was possible. This was the only one I could find, takes about 2 weeks shipping but well worth it.

I have a small question regarding to power4gear features and power plan

i read in a singapore technical forum and a member said that in order to stablize network connection and prevent wifi adapter does not turn on automatically after wake up from sleep state, user should uninstall Power4Gear. It appears to have some interfere between P4G and Window 7 own features.

I did and feel it much more stable thanks to the built-in power plan options of Window 7.

But now i cannot call the menu when you press power button. I don't want to set the "power button press" to nothing (i have to do so because i occasionally press this odd-placed button instead of backspacing or deleting).

So does anyone know a 3rd-party application that be able to control this button like P4G but does not affect the power plan? I want to have an option menu when i push the button, then i can easily choose what the machine should do.

    Thank you.

The Atheros AR9485WB-EG wireless adapter with driver version 9.2.1.470 dated 11/28/2011 along with the latest bios from Asus (v 210) and powergear upates works perfectly fine.

The advice doesn't apply to the latest drivers.

Best to you and enjoy the Asus UX31e.

I cannot really understand by "the advice doesn't apply to the latest drivers". Do you mean i shouldn't upgrade to the latest driver of the wireless adapter?

It's my bad, because Power4Gear seems not affect wifi adapter, the Wireless Console did the job. I uninstalled P4G because of its unstability and not going along well with the Win7 power control feature.

Now i miss the pop-up window that asked me what to do when i hit the power button (the physical one).

    Uninstalling P4G was not the recommended method to address the issue with the failure to wake from sleep that some experienced (including me!) using the first Atheros driver;

The answer now is update to ALL the latest drivers provided by Asus, update to the latest programs provided by Asus, don't uninstall key components provided by Asus, especially those required to get all the features on the laptop working, and stop listening to out-dated advice in Singapore technical forums. :D

Asus live update works perfectly fine for these purposes (assuming that too has not been uninstalled and is up to date ;)) or call Asus directly and get the right advice.

Honestly, don't worry, you will get this fixed, keep it simple and stick with the Asus provided info. Some of the problems I see here and elsewhere on the web are attributed directly to folks uninstalling Asus programs misidentified as crap-ware or as misidentified as causing problems.

FWIW we have uninstalled *nothing* and updated *everything* and the UX31-RSL8 we have is perfectly stable.

Now, to be sure, even with the latest and greatest drivers and software, the keyboard still is challenging for most touch typists (hunt and peck typists are less likely to notice) and every iteration so far of any of the touch pads takes a lot of getting used to for most folks.

But the machine is perfectly stable otherwise.

    Best,

I downloaded the latest BIOS update from the Asus website and unzipped the contents to an easily-accessible folder (c:\BIOS). Whenever I start EasyFlash from the bootup screen, I can select the folder, but then it just freezes. Any ideas?

edit: I should add that I completely updated the trackpad software/drivers and it's still performing poorly.

Amazon has the UX31E-DH5 for $999! I want to buy it but I returned this laptop back to ABT 2 months ago. I'm going to check out the air on Wednesday and make a decision then. But I'm sure the price will go back up by then.

Also have/had speaker problem. They screech and scream when you play high discant tunes like piano music. Some testing showed that it was only the left speakers and holding my hand at the keyboard above the speaker area made the bad sound go away. Releasing my hand and it came back but more randomly.

My theory is that there are some keys that start to vibrate (or something like that) when certain tunes and frequences are played. Though I must say that the effect has started to diminish since I first heard it. Could be that the keys become more used over time and stops reacting to the sound.

    Well that's my exp.

    Concernng screen brightness issue.

Hi all, I have a problem with random increase/decrease in screen brightness when in batterysaving/entertainment mode and the comp. is unplugged. It's the same wether I'm using P4G or the windows power saving alternatives.

Problem: brightness decrese and the increase depending on what type of programs you are running. Open Word and it increases for example. I have put the screen to max brightness manually in the settings!

    Thanks for reply!

I saw your post about SWTOR on the acer. I am looking at upgrading my Netbook to an ultrabook but was going to wait for one that runs SWTOR. Can you tell me how good it runs?

I don't expect to do 4 person raids on it, I have a desktop for the important stuff. Being able to run simple quests and craft while killing time not watching my wife's TV show would be nice.

BTW, what model do you have, ram and any other improvements or tweaks to get it to run.

Talk a little about your experience, limits and things that work well.
