My wifi is perfect, and actually better than I had with a top of the range intel 6300.

Most likely compatibly issues with the router.

My wifi is perfect as well, indeed, frequently faster than the wired lan.

The Atheros AR9485WB-EG wireless adapter with driver version 9.2.1.470 dated 11/28/2011 along with the latest bios from Asus (v 211) and powergear upates work perfectly fine.

I read Anandtech.com's review of the UX21 last October; he reported that the AData's controller firmware bug probably did not effect the UX21; he also reported that ASUS didn't think the bug affected the UX21 or the UX31; in any event, a fix for the firmware bug was posted by the manufacturer a month or so after the review.

I haven't seen anything from ASUS stating they have dropped the ADdata, although perhaps they have.

I have read through the 250 pages here, as well as numerous published reviews from the usual suspects, buyer reports on Amazon, Bestbuy, Newegg and elsewhere, and NEVER seen a report of a BSOD related to the AData; so if it was a problem, I doubt it was a widespread problem.

I suppose it is possible someone somewhere experienced it and quietly returned the machine to ASUS, and that's why we haven't heard about it.

But I'm not too worried about it and enjoy the speed of the AData.

I would suggest that perhaps ASUS is currently getting a better price from Sandisk, and that's why they have dropped AData ;) , if they have in fact determined to no longer ship the AData.

I have 2 issues with this when out of the box. The wireless and the USB3.0. It is all resolve in a very quick manner.

Thanks to all members here for he tips

I removed quite a number of unwanted ASUS software to make way and space for my 128SSD.

As for Wireless issue, I updated the latest driver but remove the Wireless Console software. Now usng the FN key to toggle on and off for Wireless

As for USB3.0 Isssue, Look for the latest driver, Uninstall first and then install as new

So far so good for my UX31. I brought the set on 2 Jan 2012.

    regards

The only source I've seen is here, and that is most likely sourced from other reports that the AData hardly seen anymore in the wild.

From test result, AData is faster than Sandisk, but I am quiet happy with my Sandisk, it is realy fast, Windows starts 7 sec from login (17-20 sec from cold boot)

Also in a real app, depending on the app, usually RAM give more significant effect to speed than harddisk.

For the past month Ive been getting crappy transfer rate on my UX31. Right now its on 9.2.1.432 and im only getting 2.5MB/s (500MB) file from my server to the notebook. Couple of months ago I was getting about 6-7MB/s. Router is about 8 feet away and still getting crappy transfer rate......With my xps 1530 with (intel 5300) i was constanly getting 11-13MB/s @300Mbps. Try using diff drivers and still getting slow speed. Try switching to diff channel on my Dir 655 and still no luck. Will need to try this out on a diff router.

Wifi interference is most likely the cause, and this gets worse by the day.

Decworld is right--most likely interference, possibly neighboring WiFi, cordless phone, even microwave oven.

FWIW, you do not have the latest driver. The Atheros AR9485WB-EG wireless adapter latest driver is version 9.2.1.470 dated 11/28/2011 and it works perfectly fine.

Using a ASUS RT-N56U as an access point, I get good wireless internet speed from my ISP, and even better from the internal lan.

    Hello,

Do you find the solution, I have the same problem. I saw that it's perhaps problem with the audio driver, I remove the driver and after it was impossible to install a new audio driver. I had to restore the disk !!!

And updates install from Microsoft, freezes and reboot in bios. I can switch it off and reboot, but it seems that I have unexpected reboot when updates of windows are installing ...

And also when using skype and msn ???

But I'm not sure, sometimes it works and sometimes I have an unexpected reboot !!

Hope someone will have a solution ... Please HELP !!

At home with only a few other wifi in range i get over 75mbps fairly consistently.

At the office where we have hundreds in range it goes from an average of 2.5 down to 0.5 at times.

Too bad ASUS didn't include a 5mhz dual channel wireless like, for example, the Atheros AR 9462; less congestion at 5Mhz.

I certainly agree the UX31 is very capable machine.

But perfection? close, but if I were to dream a little, using only currently available technology, I would like to see a lighted keyboard that works and feels like a Lenovo Thinkpad, a finger pad that works and feels like the MacBook, a gigabit lan with a port that doesn't need a dongle, 3 stream dual banded WiFi, user upgradeable memory, storage, and battery, touch sensitive OLED screen, dual 8 megabyte cameras facing front and rear and a reasonably priced replacement ac adapter with free shipping from Amazon.

    :D

Seems like most equipment today is put together at the intersection of engineering and marketing, but the final design is always from the bean counters.

Hello all.. I am having a weird problem with my 2 day old UX31.

I can use the computer for hours with no issue. I close the lid. Few hours later I go and open the lid expecting to see a nice 2 second "Instant On". Instead I see that the laptop is powered off. I power it on and it tells me Windows did not shut down properly. after I hit the desktop, I get a message that windows quit unexpectely (not exact wording. .but not looking at the error at the moment) and I click the details button.. it tells me it blue screened. I never actually saw a blue screen because the lid was shut. This has happened twice. Now to be fair, I have installed printer drivers, an external DVD drive (using default windows drivers.. not from a cd). Couple of other applications.. MIcrosoft Security Essentials. I am using the original OS that shipped with it and did not remove Instant On, Power4Gear or any of the other apps. I checked my version of drivers against the Asus website and all seem up to date.

Has anyone else seen this issue? As I said, it happens when it is either going to sleep or sometime while it is sleeping (not sure that one is even possible)... Has not happened while turned on.

I would hate to return this if I don't have to.

    Which UX31 do you have?

    Have you updated the bios?

Does it happen even after you run system configuration utility (msconfig.exe) selective startup, disable *everything* (all programs) in the startup tab?

I would call ASUS tech support as well.

Yep Bios is updated to the latest, didn't do teh msconfig route yet.. the first time I thought it might be a fluke.. didn't happen a second time till just before work so I have not had time to tshoot it..

problem is that I cannot recreate it on demand yet... If I shut it and wait 5 minutes it hasn't happened yet.. seems to be "hours" (pretty vague I know). My first thought was to factory default it and work a couple days with nothing installed and see what happens.. then add programs one at a time.

    Edit: Model: UX31-DH72

frazzxr, both my ux31e's do this.

i figured it goes too low voltage in sleep to save battery and cant come out.

i found it independent of instant on a occurs in hibernation.

mine happens randomly but more often when it been asleep overnight.

I have not seen this issue; I close the lid at night, leave it alone, open the lid in the morning, and I am working within 2 seconds.

I am using the Power4gear battery saving power scheme, with the instant on utility enabled, and use a factory installation (UX31-RSL8).

Does your actually tell you it shutdown unexpectedly? What does your event log say about it.. mine says:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000009f (0x0000000000000003, 0xfffffa8003f3ea10, 0xfffff80000b9c3d8, 0xfffffa80085839c0). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 022412-7300-01.

Have you noticed any other issues with your laptop? I am debating returning this one... got it from BB online, they don't stock these near me.

Hi Scuse me if this has already been covered but forum wont let me search the thread for the term "bios".
I See there is a Bios 2.11 on the Asus site dated Feb 10. My day old ux31 has 2.09. The update site describes the changes as "Firmware change" which is vague.
Is it worth me doing the update?

Ok, so I was checking out the latest windows updates and noticed one that was waiting to be installed on my computer: KB2482122 -
"0x0000009F" Stop error when you restart a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has certain Wi-Fi drivers installed

Applied it.... will see if it makes a differnce. Might want to try it and see if it helps.

Yet more questions: I was checking the ASUS driver page for updates. I notice one for "Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver". I also noticed under add/remove programs this is not installed on my system. Should it be?

Mine has a BIOS ver 2.09, never update to new one since there are no problem at all. Almost have it for a month, use everyday for work, very stable.

Try to tune windows services before doing BIOS update, maybe it will helps.

FWIW I have it installed; its the iaStor SATA driver for SSD drives, rather than msahci driver.

You should see it in the device manager, not add/remove programs, and you probably do have it installed.

    10.5.0.1026 is the latest version.

I have seen that one too. So does this worry you at all? I see no other issues with this notebook that makes me want to return it. Could this be a hardware issue? I went back to factory defaults today.. I am going to see if i get this again without installing any other apps for a while. Just to compare applications... the only ones i installed are Pinnacle Studio 11.1 / Epson Printer Driver for Nx420 / Microsoft Security Essentials. You happen to have any of those?

Hey guys. I know a lot of you recommend a clean install of windows 7 and then putting ASUS' (necessary) hardware back on it.

You guys surely didn't buy a Windows OS CD to install did you? If not, how/where did you guys get the Windows OS to clean install?

And, does anyone have an iso file or something with all the important ASUS hardware needed?

    Thanks!

EDIT: Just read a few pages back and it seems decworld has a link. Would you mind PM'ing me the link?

Just bought this a few weeks ago, and it's a sweet machine. However, everytime it wakes up from sleep, it has a 50% chance of just shutting down as soon as I log in. Anyone else having similar problems, or should I just RMA it?

    Beware Chrome Browser
I have the Elantech track pad. When I two finger scroll down a web page such as this forum or zoom with two finger the motion is jerky. With the scrolling in particular, when I remove my two fingers after the vertical flick the page image jerks half a dozen times as the image scrolls onwards to a stop. Instead of smoothly sliding to a stop as one would expect. Interestingly if lift one finger at the end of the tow finger flick the scrolling stops immediately so you do not get the jerkiness that otherwise follows.

So I read studiously through the past 100 pages of this thread to see if there was a fix mentioned. Could not see any. I have the latest Elan drivers and I have BIOS 2.11.

Anyway I just worked out the fix, for me at least. It is Chrome browser! Switched across to IE and the scrolling is buttery smooth.
Now if only I can get the smooth scrolling happening in Chrome as I am a convert. Does anyone else see this effect on their UX31 with Chrome?

Apart from this minor annoyance I am loving the unit.

Did some Googling and found their are several possible solutions.

    1) install an extension such as "Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller" or "MinimumSmoothScroll". From the Chrome webstore. Tried both and they definitely smooth things out. BUT they also interact with the web somehow and possible slow page loading.

    2) Enable the experimental smooth scrolling implementation. Go to about:flags and enable smooth scrolling which is about 2/3 of the way down the list. Not as smooth as the extensions, but definately is a marked improvement. This is what I am going to use for now.

I don't think your occasional resume issue indicates a hardware issue.

In more than three months since getting the UX31, I have not seen a BSOD or freeze, or issues related to resuming from sleep or closing the lid and resuming by opening.

I don't know if it makes a difference or not but I did not do a clean install of the OS; maybe that suggests a couple of different avenues where the fix might be found, which probably lies in some software or driver glitch regardless.

I also think decworld has as good a handle on this machine as anyone, and I bet he will figure out the fix. ;)

Either decision you make about keeping or not keeping the machine would be the right one!

    Good luck!

I read the Instant ON Gadget is supposed to change the Win7 shutdown button that appears when you tap the windows key from "Shutdown" to "Sleep". Is this correct?
Because it does not change it for me. If I enable instant on I see [Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\System Settings] Change
    from
    Sleep Sleep
    Sleep Sleep
    Hibernate Hibernate

    To
    Sleep Sleep
    Sleep Sleep
    Sleep Sleep

ie the last row that changes being "when I close the lid". But nothing happens to the Windows Shutdown button.

Is that the correct behaviour for instant ON or is mine messing up?

I want to keep the power wiz utility installed for now. But its too in my face.

Where is launched from on startup. I tried to find it in regedit under \Windows\CurrentVersion\Run & in msconfig, startup.

Can someone point me in the right direction. Would prefer to just launch it adhoc from an icon.

i have never known a laptop with as many modifications to windows power management as the ux31e.

even if you delete the power4gear profiles they re install them self when you change from plugged to unplugged, and removing the power components stops mine from shutting down. so I conclude a bug exists in the power management software that causes it to need to restart.

ref the rdc, i mean that patch exists to make w7hp accept inbound connections.
