Hi all, sometimes i get a notification after booting up my Zen:
Something like: "enable wake up function would disable instant on. Do you want to enable it"
But i don't know what on earth is "wake up function" ?? And i can confirm that i do not switch any feature between uses, and that issue only happens occasionally. Means it turns on the "wake up function" now and then??

Hi everybody,
same thing here
. Tried everything, incl. deleting drivers and re-installing, both manually and via Asus live update. Doesn't work, so both USB ports are dead at the moment
. Windows "problem solving" doesn't work, either.
Any idea or help would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,
crusciotto -
ditto.
in addition, system restore doesnt solve the issue as well
any help would be much appreciated!! thanks!! -
I had the same problem. My usb ports were not functioning at all. I was looking for a solution while one of the reboots my Zenbook asked me something about 'wake up' functioning. I answered the question YES then ta daaa my problem solved !
I think there is relation with USB ports and wake up function.
This is my story, I know its not very helpful but until a better answer it may help to you.
Now... I have a wake up problem. I shut down the Zenbook but reboots itself anytime. After a full charge, when I unplug the adapter, after a while it wakes up again.
Any help ! -
Anybody got an idea?

It seems they've released 32 bit versions of everything and thats stuffed up the Live Update process - applying all those updates went backwards a number of times, including the USB drivers.
What did it for me was two things, you could try the second one first in case thats all you need
1) uninstalled the Fresco USB drivers and manually D/L and install v3.5.30
No good, latest version now but still disabled, still complaining something else is providing services or something. Hmmnn...
2) uninstalled ASUS usb charger plus utility, restarted PC and voila, it installed USB drivers (again) on restart.
And I'm back.
Never used that USB charge facility anyway. -
So I registered on here because ASUS latest "update" destroyed my USB drivers and sure enough jimnz post of uninstalling the usb charger plus utility worked! NICE!
-
Is there a teardown/disassembly guide in this thread somewhere? I need one bad,and cant find one...
-
AnandTech - ASUS Zenbook UX21 Teardown
probably won't help much though -
thanks for the help!
usb drivers working again, only difference is i didnt have the usb charger plus, so i went to download it and when restarted, it reinstalled all my usb drivers! kinda opposite solution but still works -
What did u guys do b4 u update to the latest USB 3.0 driver?? I also updated the driver through Liveupdate, but both of my USB port are working fine. Can u guys tell me how to duplicate this issue? Wat version is ur USB 3.0 driver b4 u updated? TKS!

where I can find the S/N of my laptop? I haven't on the bottom and I don't have the box.
inside the pc I don't find it.
someone can help me?
thanks -
It's listed on the F2 BIOS setup screen. It's also listed via software like PC Wizard & hwinfo. If you're in the completely dead camp then sorry I don't know.

completely dead
i need this serial number to rma

Hi all,
I have a problem with SD card reader, it is hard to read my SD Card.
Mostly, when SD Card inserted, no respond at all, no SD card shows on my computer. I have to plug/unplug several times, before my computer recognized it.
How about yours? -
Success!
Got my UX31 today. Was REALLY stumped that two-finger click didn't produce a middle/Mouse3 click. Luckily I got the Elan touchpad. My old EEE also got a Elan multi touchpad.
The registry folder in question: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech\Smartpad
By comparing a little I found the key "Tap_Two_Finger" responsible for its function. Merely setting this to "2"(which means middle click) didn't change anything as the driver would reset it upon reboot(and a reboot is needed for it to reread configuration).
The solution was simple: I denied the "set value" permission on the entire folder. After changing that setting of course. Unfortunately that means that you can't use the control panel program to set settings anymore, but for me it's worth it since it's now actually functional.
I just wish that Asus would tell Elan to create an unlocked version of the drivers, that would really be the best solution. I'd also like the ability to set active tracking area, since mine senses touch on almost the entire physical buttons.
All in all though, I'm extremely happy with this computer. Really nice screen and the keyboard is very good(I tried it at a local shop where it was extremely stiff, but mine feels just right). Even some light gaming works, only tried Dungeon Defenders so far though. -
How is the webcam on these for skyping ?
Maybe someone willing to do a screenshot to show off how well the webcams work on these ? -
Seemed good enough for Skype when I tried it briefly. In general, faces looks good, other stuff, say papers/screens/whatnot probably not so good.
Here's a picture of me holding up a bottle. I snapped it while riding a train so that might explain why it is a bit blurry.
-
thank you, seems good enough.
-
As I wrote previously it is not an option because for the reasons which are totally understandable for me Asus wont send it abroad. And there is no option to but this dvd in Europe :/

Anybody know of any half-depth SD cards? With the ever increasing MicroSD capacities, I find it hard to believe there's no such SD cards to be had.
I was thrilled about the SD card reader since it would allow me to expand the internal memory by up to 64GB, but having the card stick out is obviously not a very good idea in the long term. -
Weird issue with my UX31. My UX31 will sometimes shutdown on its own if I unplugged the charger from it. It also happens when I connect the charger to it. Its pretty random but its been happening alot lately. I have the latest bios on it. Anyone else? Getting so sick of all the issues im having with this notebook....
-
I think you have to forget about SD card reader. Mine, sometime can read SD Card well, but most of the time can not read at all.
-
I've used it thrice without any issues, but having the card sticking out or having to un/plug it every time I stop using the Zenbook is something I won't do. With (AFAIK) the MacBook Air also having this type of reader, I was hoping there would have been a market for such cards. But there doesn't seem to exist such cards, despite the fact that a horizontal micro SD put inside a vertical SD card looks to be able to work perfectly fine.
-
Sorry for coming back so late but I was a bit busy recently. Anyhow, I also didn't have the usb charger plus installed so I did the same as Pandemonia. It reinstalled the USB2.0 but not the USB3.0. So I called the ASUS hotline this morning. They confirmed that they had a faulty version of the usb drivers on their servers and also recommended the above procedure. When I told them that I tried and it didn't work they said the only solution would be a system restore - which is what I did and in fact managed to restore the version just before the one of the live update. Now I have everything working again.
On a side note: the ASUS guy even recommended NOT to update anything via live update if the system otherwise is working fine...

My UX31E sometimes reboots on its own. When I try to stand-by it does not at the first. When I stand-by second time then it goes to stand-by mode. I asked this question at least two times here but I think nobody had this kind of problem or knowns anything about that so I NEVER got an answer
I hope someone replies yours. -
I've actually seen quite some reports of zenbook laptops dying and having their motherboards replaced due to issues with power/charging/standby. All on this forum. Can't remember where it was, perhaps in the owners' lounge (I look here for any issues a laptop might have before buying it, ever since my Sony Z developed a "nice" horizontal line across the screen due to palmrest hitting the screen).
Here's the related topic: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/637772-ux31-completely-dead-help.html -
Not that I think there will be a lot more driver updates for this machine, but in case you want to get rid of the Live Update utility. Simply point your RSS reader towards this URL and you'll get updates when new drivers are released. For some reason they update it manually so it might take a while before they appear in the feed: ASUSTek RSS [Notebook] [UX31E] [en-us]

How warm does you zenbook get?
I had my motherboard replaced under warranty and it seems to get quite warm in the top right hand corner and running along the speaker. I didn't notice this before the motherboard was replaced.... Just curious if there is a fan problem or an additional motherboard problem. -
Webcam works for Skype, but definitely not as good as a real 720p webcam from say Logitech.
-
Mine is same. My UX31E quite warm in the top right hand corner, which you plug power. Mine gets hot more while power is plugged, especially in high performance mode. But normally its not worm at all.

Hello, I have a problem with the fan of my UX31. At some point the fan starts and never stops . I checked the temperature and effectively it marks over 80 degrees but if I immediately reboot the temperature goes below 60 degrees (around 55) and the fan goes off. It seems that the temperature sensor for some reason doesn't work properly until it is rebooted. Anyone experiencing such a thing?
-
Check task manager and make sure something isn't taking up 100% of the CPU. I've seen this happen on my Zenbook.
-
I've never checked temperature but at sustained 100% load the fan revs up as expected, and when the load drops to lower levels the fan gets quiet pretty fast. During reboot the computer has maybe 10-15 seconds to get rid of heat so that seems reasonable(first Windows has to stop all tasks, then go through the shutdown process itself, and then boot).

The New Primes were announced for the US:
ASUS bringing Zenbook Prime UX21A, UX31A, UX32A and UX32VD to the US, prices start at $799 -- Engadget
Hands on preview:
ASUS Zenbook Prime UX21A preview -- Engadget -
It makes me really happy that they fixed the keyboard - the UX31E was an amazing machine, with probably the worst keyboard I've ever used on a notebook. After being incredibly disappointed by the Lenovo X230's screen, I think this will be my next purchase!
-
I was gonna get the 21A... but I want the SD slot so looks like the 31A for me.
-
Another review/preview of the Primes:
AnandTech - ASUS Zenbook Prime (UX21A) Review: The First of the 2nd Gen Ultrabooks
I'm liking the UX32VD-DB71, but we will have to see how the Envy-14 that I ordered is like. -
Curious - do you think we will see AMD Trinity on an ASUS Zenbook Prime anytime soon?
Although HD4000 is a nice step up, and the ones with GeForce GT 620M are simply a rebadged 520M with lesser performance than HD4000 at times, light gaming is still a little bit out of question. Just look at Anandtech's preview; Civilization V, for example, garners 9fps at 1368x768 with low settings.
The "AMD Prototype" in Anandtech's preview is blowing away the HD4000 in benchmarks. However, AMD is targeting budget-oriented customers...that segment does not warrant high-end features like an IPS screen. The IPS screen looks to be a thing of beauty! -
I highly doubt they will throw in an AMD Trinity on the Primes since they are already speced with the GeForce GT. Maybe on the 3rd gen Zenbook.
-
That benchmark cannot be accurate. With the settings on low, I'm getting minimum 20 fps in Civ V on my Lenovo x220 (HD 3000). Usually the frame rate hovers around 30.
-
UX31E and UX31A are completely same. And benchmarks show that UX31A has the same SSD with UX31E, this is SanDisk. So I believe that I can replace my UX31E keyboard with the new one (on UX31A) so I do not have to replace the notebook completely. SSD performance is not better so not need to replace the notebook at all.
This is my personel view of course. -
Someone asked that to Asus in their Google+ page and the guy said the following:
Q: are you planning on releasing an AMD Trinity version of the Zenbook? Or a thin 13' notebook with Trinity at least? I would be all over a Zenbook with the A10-4655M 25W APU. Something with a decent screen and an AMD APU. And you could undercut in price your competitors without loosing profit margin.
A: Oi! Zenbook belongs to the Ultrabook category, as defined by... Intel. I guess that answers your first question
But, now AMD is working on creating devices called Ultrathins...
So, no Zenbooks with Trinity unfortunately.
-
wrong, The 620m is a re-build of the 540m, not the 520, and it uses less power than the 540. There may be other changes we do not know about, like a higher clock speed or more ram.
-
. I just flashed my UX31 to bios 12 and now the InstantOn is not working. When I hit the power button I am not getting the option to put the notebook in sleep, hibernate, nothing, power off. I try re installing the software and it still not working. Anyone else?
-
Can any owner of the UX31 verify a simple fact for me? I wonder if the headphone jack also supports S/PDIF pass-through? This is an important consideration for me as I intend to buy the UX31A as a multimedia player. My home theater setup has HDMI, the kitchen TV has a WiDi adapter. But my audiophile setup only has optical/co-ax S/PDIF. I'd really appreciate it if someone can check their UX31's audio setting and confirm this.

Help! WIFI issues!
My wifi was playing up so I looked on here and saw that the Atheros driver is a problem child so I had a tech savvy friend look at it for me. He wasn't able to install the version recommended (ending in 459 from memory) but found a newer one on the ASUS site (490, one install was 470).
Now, my wifi is turning off spontaneously and it's still being really slow. I have an old laptop/phone/tablet and dont have any of these problems with them so it's not an internet problem.
Someone mentioned it wouldn't happen if power is set to high performance but a)I want to use battery saver and b)it did happen on high performance just a few minutes ago.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. -
Is there any way I could down grade the bios on the UX31? I noticed that my UX31 now eats more battery life then before. Notice this right after i flashed to 212. With WinFlash it will not let me downgrade.
-
It will be the same hardware but diff name (same way that HP did it)
-
yeah, I had that problem too.
but it is not a bug. Just press the power button about 2-3 sec and a power option will appear...
