I have skimmed through this LONG thread and not found what I look for. I bought the UX31 and did a fresh install of windows.

Now my fn keys do not work. Some drivers wuld not install and hd an error message saying that it couldnt install because it wasn't an Asus. What is going on and how can I mke my brightness and volume keys work on the keybord?

BTW it sucks to type on this keybord, you hve to really bang the A key for it to register.

    Hi all

Recently I had a very weird issue. Idk whether it's related to the hardware, the machine's fault or software conflict.

The issue happened after i installing a truck driving simulator game, but i'm not really quite sure about their relations. Just know it happened after installing that game, but occasionally (not always happens)

    Here's the issue:

When i hold the Shift key to enter shift symbols, it magically AUTOmatically inserts an array of symbols, most of them are shift symbols (which require shift key pressed to enter). Such as *)(6%^^^^^^++++++, or *%*$&&)]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]

I mean AUTO, because i don't press any other keys, just the shift key and those symbols are just inserted out of the blue. Both the left and right shift key causes this issue, with differents symbol arrays each key and each day.

I think that something has recorded historical actions of my keyboard and let it pour out when the Shift key is pressed. Just guess, because when i plug in my external keyboard, it doesn't occur.

This issue is very annoying, because: (1) I cannot do anything without those shift key. They're just unusable; and (2)the issue occurs randomly without any warnings; and (3) it seems to occur only within my Admin account, other accounts seem not be affected. That's weird!

So, please anyone solve this problem for me? Many many thanks

Hey, the version I'm running now is 1.1.50. I'm not sure what version number I had before though.

That is a weird issue! Never heard anything like it before. The fact that a different keyboard works sounds like its a keyboard fault, but then if its working ok on other user accounts it must be software related.
Perhaps if you system restore to the point just before you installed the truck game? It's annoying because you'll lose every setting you've changed since then, but it might fix it if the truck has caused the problem. The only other semi-related thing I could find is this:
Solved shift key auto-copying clipboard - Windows 7 Forums
But it doesn't sound too much like your problem, and the insert key is on the delete key too so it's unlikely to be that. The essence of the problem may be the same though; check every other key on the keyboard to see if its stuck down.
    Good luck buddy!

First of all, thank you so much for your concern about my problem

I've tried remove things that might be related, namely the game, the Sticky Notes features, even re-setup Regional and Languages + Language Bar but it's still there.

I also did some further testings within certain softwares and user accounts and realize that:
    • The left shift button now reacts like the P key. It calls print feature when I press Ctrl + Left Shift in Microsoft Word and other doc editing softwares
    • The right one reacts like the J key. Same testing method with some actions featured by the Ctrl + Shift shortcut...
    • Now it happens in EVERY accounts, even within Safe Mode

So now, I have two P key, two J key and no Shift key. Very ridiculous, and it sucks.

What on earth can I try before send it to Asus' technical assistants?

Yeah, the fact that it's occurring in all user accounts, but not on any other external keyboards indicates to me that it's a hardware fault that will need to be repaired by ASUS. The only other thing I can think of that would tell you is maybe installing Ubuntu in addition to Windows (it's quite easy to do, there's a windows installer), boot into Ubuntu and see if the problem remains. If it does, then its definitely a faulty keyboard and needs to be sent back.

@christaffer: thank you very much. I tried finding whether there's a stuck key but Keyboard Test application tells everything is ok. But when I press shift keys, something really happens. It appears that several keys are pressed at once along with the shift keys.

So, as the worst situation ever, this definitely a hardware defect.

I'm beginning to fear this machine...

So today 4-7-12 I bought my zenbook from Office Depot since they had it on sale!!

Anyways I guess Asus is using 2 different hard drives. I checked my SSD drive and it is in fact the Adata XM11 and not the scan disk one. I am surprised I got that drive since it seems everyone was getting the scan disk one??

    Hi,

I have a problem (I think simple) with my Zenbook. I shutdown and put it into charge for all night. In the morning I realize that Notebook boots itself then goes to stand-by by itself !

How is this possible ? I shutdown Windows, as I know unless you press power button it does not boots itself !

    Any comments.

dont know why it will turn on by itself. I know on my Asus transformer that if I shut it down and then plug in the power cord to charge it, it will automatically turn on. Maybe its the same with the UX31?

Hi guys I have other problem with UX31. I formated it without creating recovery DVD. I know it is my fault. What I did I installed fresh OEM Win 7 (original one) using my key. I also downloaded all the drivers and so on.

I also of course, tried to recover it from recovery partition which I did not touch, but during the installation MBR was damaged of removed and there is now way to recover the system form that partition. I tried to repair MBR with HIREN I tried to boot from it, I have even restore the .wim file from it created an iso using that .wim, with imagex software. All for nothing :/

So I thought that the last option is to buy recovery dvd what I was willing to do but unfortunately recovery dvd is only available in USA. I live abroad. So my question is will anybody be so kind and share with me with his recovery dvd . My UX31 is the one with 256gb ssd.

Or maybe you have any other ideas how I can recover my OS?

In advance thx for every help,
    Regards Keicam.

Hey guys, I've got a UX31E that I bought about a month ago. Today I went to insert an SD card in the slot, and the computer never recognized it was there. The USB ports weren't working either. I know they used to work a few weeks ago.

I got thinking about it...right before I left town on March 8th I let the thing install a bunch of "ASUS recommended updates". It worked after that. Then, earlier this week, I let it install a bunch more. I'm guessed that one of those updates somehow broke these. There was an error in the drivers section about something being disabled, although I couldn't find any to enable. I did a system restore to 3/18, which I knew was after tthe first round of updates but before the last. This fixed the SD slot and USB ports.

I'm hesitant to let it install these updates again because I don't want to go through this process again. Do you guys mess with this ASUS live update? It says one pertaining to the wireless networking is critical...should I install that one?

    Thanks in advance.

not sure if this will work for you as you have already formatted... but have you tried pressing F9 at startup?

if that fails, well hmmm... how about this?

from a legal point of view, i think you may be allowed to download a copy of Windows 7 Home Professional as you own a license since you purchased the ux31. when activating windows, get in touch with microsoft so they can provide you with the license you already own? :D

    Hi,

I have UX31E with Core I5-2557M Cpu and 256 GB Sandisk SSD. Today i noticed that version 212 of bios is out. I installed it and then re-run the WEI. As you can guess, no difference. SSD score is still stuck at 5.9

But the real thing i noticed is that cpu speed was at minimum during disk testing part (turboost utility showed minimum and green leaf) It was weird because cpu should be loaded even just a little. My previous experience at my desktop pc OCZ Vertex 2 shows that. Anyways i decided to tweak the power settings a bit and force cpu run at a higher frequency.

My OS is in Turkish, so i can not give you the exact wordings. Plan i used was power4gear high performance. Cpu power saving policy in the advanced tab showed 5% as minimum cpu speed. I increased to 100% and re-run the WEI. Now disk score is 7.4. I guess pc seems more responsive now. I was happy with the previous performance though.

Lowest frequency of this pc is 800 MHz. If you throttle it as 5%, effective frequency will be like 40 MHz. That is too low. I am not sure will it make further difference if cpu speed can be adjusted as 1700 MHz min or even more.

I hope i am not discovering Americas again. :) I haven't noticed any news in this forum or elsewhere before. Sorry if this is the case...

f9 -doesnt work, I did not format whole drive, just the OS partition, so recovery partition is all right but as I mention previously I can't find a way to get boot from it.

If its going about getting the original software from microsft - Actually that was exactly what I did :) - but I wold like to restore my UX to box state in case I want to sell it. I even was willing to spend another 50 bucks for recovery dvd which you can purchase in Asus store but the problem is, that they do not sent it abroad :/

What is even more incomprehensible to me is the fact that you can not buy it in Europe -sick!

So I was thinking thats the only way to get a recovery dvd is to create a one on different UX and put it on mine.

Bios 2.12 installed in my UX31E with no problems (installed from a USB key through BIOS flash function). But ... 256GB Sandisk SSD HDD continue to score a 5.9 performance index.

You can download the Windows 7 SP1 All in One Installation Disk (iso image) using BitTorrent, create a USB bootable key and launch it using the USB on the left of your UX31E (NOT the one on the right because it doesn't work correctly during O.S. installation).

Windows 7 SP1 All in One Installation Disk contain all x32 and x64 versions of Windows 7 (Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, Enterprise) and, at the beginning of O.S. installation, you can choose the right version for your laptop: Windows 7 Professional x64.

I've deleted and formatted my 256GB Sandisk SSD, installed everything (Windows 7, drivers, software, etc.) from scratch and my UX31E works perfectly.

Why would the budget version (UX32vd) have a discrete graphics card, while the supposed higher end UX31A stay with the intel HD? I know the UX32vd has a hybrid SSD versus the full SSD, but couldn't they add the discrete graphics on the 31A?

I didnt make backup-cd instead I download from here the files 5 months ago (some kind member provided) and have them on external storage.

    1. is that all i need ?
    2. can i install from external storage or how to do ?

Is that so easy or something to consider.

    1. Price isn't an issue if you are thinking of buying an ultrabook in the first place, you want cheap, go for a netbook.
    2. Intel HD Graphics 4000 which comes on Ivy bridge is better than low to mid range discrete graphics and if you are looking for decent graphics for work or gaming, get a desktop, an ultrabook isnt for you.
    3. You lose out on the matte 1920*1080 screen and backlit keyboard.
    4. Power consumption of the ivy bridge series is also better=better battery life.

Hmmmmmm, A REALLY hard choice to make.

    Hey guys

Been stalking the forum for years now but it was time to register as im wanting an ultrabook.

First it was this, then the disappointing niggles came out which had me over to the Samsung 9 Series which seems fantastic but obviously now that the UX2/31'A' has been announced, how can i not wait (again).

Anyways, wondering if any of you saw this over on engadget?

ASUS Zenbook Primes with 1080p IPS panels and (probably) Ivy Bridge are real, coming to Taiwan in June -- Engadget

Seems like the name will be the Zenbook PRIME - Early as June? Lets hope so.

I saw the same announcment over at notebookcheck.com and the pictures show a backlit keyboard as well. They expect pricing to start at $1,100 for the 13" model - a bargain when compared to the Samsung Series 9.

I'll throw my money at a Zenbook Prime... just for the 1080p.

Not sure if I can squint that hard at an 11.6" though.

    Are you stalking me?

Just kidding... but yeah... I think that was one of the first avatars I used when I joined a cell phone forum so I wax nostalgic.

The backlit keyboard is also another plus for the ZenBook "Prime". I guess 1080p won't be too bad for the 11.6"... but I'll have to see it first... I like pixel density and all... but I'm not as young as I used to be.

large SSD costs more $. Extra thin also costs more $. Its likely the bottom piece on the budget version may have cheaper materials.

Have you tried reading on a Sony Vaio P 8" 1600px res?

For me it was like trying to look at a computer for ants. The screen was sharp but everything was tiny. I'm sure 1080p on 11.6" would be ok.

I'm kind of interested in a thinner bezel on the Asus but 1080p 13.3" IPS trumps the samsung 1600x900.

    I purchased the U31SD-AH51 from amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005UUS5PC/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00

So far i love it, when doing normal tasks and with power 4 gear set to battery mode i get about 8 hours of battery life. It plays CS:Source, Starcraft 2 and BF3 keep in mind i am running them all at lowest settings but whatever it plays them.

So I am looking to replace my computer in my signature. I was looking for something even lighter and a MUCH better screen while also still having gaming capabilities. Does the UX32vd look good with the 1920x1080 IPS panel and GT620M for games such as LoL, Dota 2, and Diablo 3?
