How's the battery life after a fresh install? Using the stock install the Windows battery estimate would estimate 8 hour at full charge. After my fresh install, the estimate is only 4 hours. I've already installed the Asus Power4Gear and changed it to Battery Saver.

Can someone let me know if I need to do anything differently if I've upgraded to BIOS 219?

No, not that i know. I just installed it "after" a bios update to 219. I came from 206 and had serious problems with the usb 3.0 ports.
After the update, the installation went perfect. I made sure i had a backup of the important files i had and deleted all the system partitions aswell. (Don't forget to make the repair dvd using the asus tool!)

Thanks to this great post, I was able to install Windows 7 fresh on my UX31A. I also deleted the recovery partition in order to free up space. Now I'm going to sell my UX31A, is there any way to restore the recovery partition? Or at least get it on DVD?

If you are still looking for the Restore DVD (2 of them) for Windows 7 Home (as supplied by ASUS on a fresh UX31A) created by the ASUS AI Recovery Program (as installed on a fresh UX31A).
I can surely post to you the 2 DVDs which you can use (with the help of an external DVD reader/writer) to recreate your SSD Hard disk with all the partitions by booting from the first DVD and following the very easy instructions.
    Or
If you prefer I can send to you the image file of each of the 2 DVDs and you can crate a bootable usb from DVD 1 of 2 to recreate a fresh UX31a with all its original partitions and programs.

Let me know and I will try and send you what you want. You can contact me by PM (Private message if you do not want our conversations to be public.).

Waiting for your response. Regards from Sunny Athens - Greece.

Hi godlyatheist - Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I followed the steps to upgrade my zenbook ux31a to windows 8.1 and my estimated battery life has decreased dramatically. Around 3-4 hours now from the 6-7 i had when i was on windows 7.

Hi, do you still have the ASUS recovery disk for UX31A / win 7 home premium?
If yes could you please share the ISO of the disk somehow?

Hey guys, er, stuck on Step 1 I get this error from the Microsoft site when I try to download the stock Win 7 image after entering my product key:

"The product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options."

HI all. I want to create a bootable usb for my ux31a. With my own Windows ISO. How to proceed?

I suspect the tool in the OP only lets ypu download a ISO straight from Microsoft to crete a boot thumbdrive?

Don't you get a grace period in which you can download the updates before entering your license key?

Second, I use a Win7 iso without Service Pack1. It seems the USB3.0 drivers will not be there during setup. Will the USB3 ports work regardles if you have the drivers or not?

Abou the fan-issue, my fan was annoying as what when I got my Zenbook. I finally downloaded a util called NotebookFanControl. Tweaked the settings. And the fan is stopped until temps hit 80 degrees. Then NBFC shuts the fan quiet. At least this is on Win8.0

The pre-installed keys are OEM product keys and want work when typing this on the Microsoft Website to get the recovery iso media. Only individual who purchase a retail key are able to use this feature for Windows 7 on Microsoft's website. Below I've provide a link to get the Windows 7 home iso media and instructions to do a clean install. Get a USB with at least 4GB to save this file too.

    http://softlay.net/operating-system...full-version-free-download-iso-32-64-bit.html

Make sure all your files are backed up before proceeding to the next step.

    1. Put the USB into your system and restart your computer.

    2. Press the ESC key to enter the boot menu as soon as the computer begins to boot, select the USB and press ENTER to load the Windows setup.

    3. Click install now and click through the various options.

    4. Once you get to the option to "upgrade" or "Custom", click on Custom.

    5. Remove all recovery files, partitions, and wipe your primary HDD.

    6. Your drive should say "unallocated", select the unallocated drive and click next to reinstall Windows.
