I have an inquiry about stock-OS of G53JW. Mine is running on stock Win7 SP1 Home Premium and uninstalled some of bloatwares but when i check event viewer i "sometims" see a DCOM error about "Thumbnail Cache Out of Proc Server" DCOM object saying:

    Source: Distributed COM
    Event Id: 10010
Message: The server {AB8902B4-09CA-4BB6-B78D-A8F59079A8D5} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

Re-registering this DLL did not help. Any same issue for the other G53JW owners?

kimiraikkonen, I would run sfc /scannow (with admin rights on command prompt) to rule out a bad file.

    1. Have you unchecked the entry for it in MSCONFIG?
    2. How to Uninstall ASUS Live Update | eHow.com
I have never tried this and I would do a full system image before running an unknown (to me) 3rd party tool Securiy Stronghold

Thanks Josea, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Is there someone (including you) noticed that event log entry in event viewer (eventvwr). I bet some bloatware insists on referencing that COM component and it times out in Windows 7. Any same issues with stock-OS?

GUID of COM component as stated above and as shown in event log:

Thanks again Josea. I tried that 3rd party tool and a stern warning to all that it is crap and useless. It took a few minutes to go through the process and in the end, it wanted me to pay $19 or more. Not sure what it had installed on my laptop but I will have to run the malwarebytes pro to make sure that my system is clean after uninstalling the crap tool.

Live Update is not in MSCONFIG or at least it's now name differently that I can't even find that Asus component in the services or startup tabs.

    EDIT:

I just deleted the Live Update folder and removed remnants from the registry. Seems like it was the only way to rid of the software. :)

    hello everyone....

thankyou for the awesome guide!!! it really helps asus users from around the world...

um id like to ask... i just bought the low-end K43E laptop....

i'd like to disable the disruptive 3D onscreen fn key display... i saw on the post#1 its the ATKOSD driver...

however, the new Asus laptop in my country, there is no ATKOSD driver... ASUS combined it together and name it ATK Package...

so... i'd like to ask... how to disable 3d onscreen display fn key without uninstalling the ATK package with it...?

    cheers

Run MSConfig, then disable ATKOSD2 in startup. Asus made ATK into one installer package, but the three components are still separated from the OS' perspective allowing you to disable ATK Media and ATK OSD2 without loosing the hotkey functionalities.

Yes as tijo said, you must kill the atkosd2 process, there is no way to uninstall it on newer machines that have the ATK utilities installed in one bundled package. You could delete the .exe from the program files folder if you wanted.

Thanks both. On my next clean install I will do just that. :)

I just wished Asus would come out with an application like Sony's Battery Care or Lenovo's Power Manager. It seems silly to be charging the battery to 100% all the time when many studies show charging and discharging to extremes wear batteries quicker.

The threshold for starting charging the battery on Asus notebooks is at 95% and as far as i know, there is no way of changing that.

That's true and the level eventually drops even your notebook is plugged in and is OFF. That's by chemical structure of battery (Lithium batteries) AFAIK. Then it recharges back to %100 automatically, however i don't like that kind of cycle even within %5 range, it may shorten life of battery, IMHO.

Hi everyone, I found this forum while googling for a solution to this problem I'm having and I'm hoping someone here will be able to help.

Ok, so, I got this Asus k52f-1aex-2 laptop second hand and I reinstalled my own copy of windows 7 32 bit on it. I think I've replaced most of the utilities and drivers that it had on it before I did that, but I'm obviously missing something. I have a 'Microsoft wireless mobile mouse 4000' (that's what it says on the box) that I was able to customise fully before I reinstalled my version of windows. Now I just see the standard mouse options, rather than being able to change the function of the 3 buttons and the scroll wheel. My device manager says all the drivers for the mouse are up to date, so I'm thinking there's an Asus utility or driver that I haven't replaced. Can anyone help? Are there any things that relate to the mouse's functionality besides its drivers?

Can you tell I'm in over my head here? Is there a list online somewhere of all the utilities and drivers that my model should have so I can go through it and see what I'm missing? I did write a list, but evidently I've missed something :(

Sorry for the giant message. I hope this is the right thread, I figured it was relevant to the utilities list.

    Thanks

    Ang

Good to know. Just to confirm Tijo, did you mean start or stop charging the battery?

I saw some horror stories on web when trying third party battery managers so I'm not going that route. But it's a shame Asus can't provide a similar feature or I'd be an Asus loyalist. On our Thinkpad, I set it to 40 (start) and 95% (stop) but then I use that as a desktop replacement so I took the battery out.

@insert_cliche_here you probably need Microsoft Intellipoint software for your mouse functionality.

@alanbrenton in most user manuals for ASUS notebooks it states that 95% is the charging threshold, where it stops charging. Once it dips below 95% it will start charging again. This isn't a hard limit since there is still a trickle charge, so it is possible for your battery to get to 100%.

I'm not aware of any ASUS machines that ship with microsoft mice, so I don't know why intellipoint would be installed from the factory.

    Here's where to download it:

Microsoft Intellipoint is an optional component when you run windows update, so if you didn't specifically download the software from their website that is how you may have gotten it. The point is you need intellipoint. ;)

Some software gets updated and moved frequently, so it would be a big job to constantly check the versions and locations of all these programs.

Remember, this is a users' forum. Somebody already went to a lot of trouble to assemble this thread....a couple minutes of leg work on our part isn't too much to ask. ;)

Also, some utilities are no longer in use or have been replaced by others like the ATK package replacing ATK_Hotkey, ATK_Media and ATK_OSD2. I could add a link to some of those, but they will go out of date eventually as well. Besides, if you're looking to do a clean install, you'll have to do some driver hunting as well. All are available on Asus' support download page which shouldn't be hard to find.

And a final point (in case the horse isn't dead yet): It's not unusual for Asus to package different versions of a utility for different models. So not only does the ATK Package, for example, "evolve" over time, but the ATK Package for one laptop is probably not appropriate for a different model.

I have an n53sv and I uninstalled some random bloatware (Some chinese windows update, and few DVD Burning softwares) and now for some reason my Google Chrome won't open, and my AVG Window opens but its completly blank. None of the hotkeys on the keyboard are working aswell as the volume keys above the keyboard. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

For the hotkeys, reinstalling the ATK package will fix this. For the rest i'm not entirely sure what the problem is.

That has been discussed numerous times, especially by me and the others who had the same issue. Probably you uninstalled Oberon Game Park games which is the main culprit. You either need to reinstall broken softwares or reinstall entire OS by eliminating bloatware uninstallation disaster!

I think this is absolutely disgusting, I ran into the same problem (ended up reinstalling, then buying an SSD and reinstalling again, cripes). It's totally out of order for ASUS to ship bloatware that takes a dump on your machine when you install it.

You can trash the intel management engine, but you'll get an unknown device in the device manager, not like it really matters, but if that kind of things bug you...

Keep the C++ redist, if they are installed, it's because some program needs them.

    Trash that Oberon game park.

First off, FANTASTIC THREAD! This has been a real saving grace for me when it came to making more space on my laptop, so this was a really great find. Thanks!

Now I hope you still continue to look in this thread David, because I need to ask a couple of things:
    1. I saw that with Splendid that the settings for that are pretty much the same as the ones for nVIDIA. What about the ones for ATI? I have Catalyst Control Center and I'm not sure if the settings for that are the same for the ones with Splendid. In either case, is it safe to uninstall Splendid Utility if you have ATI as a graphics card?
    2. I'm having trouble trying to find a disable option in the BIOS for Express Gate. Now, my laptop (an ASUS N61J) has a Power4Gear button which, when pressed when the laptop is off, starts up Express Gate. If I can't find a disable option in the BIOS for Express Gate, is there a way to disable it so that I can safely uninstall Express Gate?

There is no way to disable the power-on function of the expressgate/power4gear button. Splendid just manages brightness/contrast of the screen, uninstall is optional.

    1. asus screensaver - uninstall optional
    2. asus 'app store' - uninstall optional
    3. required device driver
    4. uninstall optional

Hey guys im hoping you can help me out here...

I got myself an ASUS A53E not too long ago, and re-installed the built in windows with my own, windows ultimate.

BUT, my problem is that there are a couple of programs that came pre-installed, that i have no backups of. and are not on the asus driver downloads page. but i know that they are in the list of item from the E-driver program.

Only problem is E-driver is not found ANYWHERE on the internet. So im hoping someone can find it on their hard drive, zip it don and email it to me? I really REALLY want this program

I see it was last updated almost a year and a half ago... excuse my newbish igno but... is it still relevant for a brand new Asus? Any model laptop? Thanks!

Hey guys, we all already knew that Oberon destroyes Google products when uninstalled. So i'm asking, has anybody found a way to install Google Earth after having Oberon uninstall disaster? I managed to maintain most of the problems by re-installing but i'm not sure if i can install and run Google Earth (not Google Chrome). Can somebody point some info?

I'll spend rest of my life by swearing to OBERON! And Asus has some part of the pie of course!

    Thanks!

    Hello,
I couldn't find definitive answer regarding the following utilities:

    - Instant On
    - Secure Delete
    - USB Charger
    - Intel Wireless Display
    - Wireless Radio Control

Are they useful? Do I need to install them?

Also see the process Btmshellex is running in start-up with high impact. It seems it is about bluetooth devie (part of the Intel driver package). However, I am not sure what it exactly does and if it is necessary to run at start-up?

Another confusing matter is RealTek Audio drivers and Audio manager interface? Are they needed? It seems Windows 8 already has some drivers and audio works even before installing the Realtek drivers? I noticed the Realtek HD Audio manager starts at startup with high impact.

    Thanks.
