thekingdavids, what is the speed of the memory? 533MHz or 667MHz? Thanks.
-
CanadaSys > u got ur w3j too?
wow.. thats awesome!
Well, I'm waiting for a full review on the w3j by the ppl who have already received theirs.. would like to tell u guys to take your time, but hell, i'm really looking forward to reading some reviews!
=)
do enjoy ur w3js to the max yeah?
=D -
What is the speed of the ATi X1600? Download ATi Tool to check! And have you tried to change the voltage of the CPU?
-
What video card is a 3900 3dMarks' 05 benchmark score comparable to?
-
I'm curious what the release GPU/Memory speeds are. I would think that Asus underclocked both to make heat more bearable. If that's true then 'stocking-to-clock' should increase your 3dMark scores.

how is the sound volume when playing DVDs?
W3v has very weak sound volume when playing DVD...I can barely hear the sound even when the room is very quiet. -

Thanks for all the pictures and info. You're one lucky guy!!!
That's awesome that it came with a 2 year global warranty...there's a good chance that the North American model will also come with a 2 year global warranty sticker by mistake, which they'll have to honor!!! The only thing is, If it comes with the 2 years to N.A., does that mean we can't add on the extended warranty? Four years total would be awesome but unlikely.
The W3V was never black, although some pictures may have portrayed it that way...I'm glad to hear that the W3J is darker than the W3V though. My only gripe is the touchpad surround and keys, the new style is cool, but I was hoping to replace it with a V6J/W5F surround anyways (which is much darker aluminum with the two button layout and Blue LED) but now I'm not so sure It'll be compatible with the new setup and software/synaptics...can any of the retailers comment on this, will I still be able to switch them or not?
~Joy~, Canadasys is a dealer...so I'm not sure If he has any in stock yet, but he got to play around and test a demo W3J. As of right now, TheKingDavids is the only regular Joe consumer who is fortunate enough to own one!
Keep the info and impressions coming, we appreciate the time you're taking away from playing with your W3J to fill us all in on benchmarks and take the pics -
I know that when I watch a DVD on my current laptop, I turn my stereo up to about 18, but I listen to my music at around 10-12, and all the system volumes stay the same. Same idea for using my Dad's desktop... DVDs just play quieter.
It may also be intentional in production in order to get a larger dynamic range, they make the average lower than loud so that the loud scenes are actually louder... but I'm not an audio producer for a movie studio.

P.S. If you do have them in, Danny, when can I come pick mine up? (I honestly doubt you wouldn't have informed us if they were coming in though. I'm just being excited.) -
Im in, official!!!!!!!

-
now i am all for it -
Thanks, -
What I can tell you is that I wouldn't have paid x dollars for the extended warranty if I was already getting 2 years (or I would expect the extra year to be less). -
)

HAH! Nice!
I am very satisfied with 3900. My X850 XT only oc'd on the memory gets around 6800 so the laptop will still offer great performance, on the go! I can't wait to get this thing and doink around with it
I have a feeling you could OC the video card a little more but unless it offered a bunch of performance gains without much heat gains, it won't be worth it. Either way I am very satisfied!
-
If you can, could you test the battery life? I am really eager to see if it can push over 3 hours.
-
-
If it is govened by the same rules as pricing, they may be obligated to honor it. However, let's say that hypothetically a W*J had an IPS Screen, and that sticker inadvertently was placed on your W3J - they obviously can't provide you with an IPS for that unit, and I believe it would be chalked up to error and that would be the end of story.
So I dont know -
They won't honor a sticker, because they can always claim you put it on there. You would have an argument for them to honor it if you were at the store, saw the sticker on it, and talked to the sales rep (probably has to be an Asus rep) and they say they will honor it. You have to get their name and get them to put it in writing before you buy it. Alternatively if they send you the card for the warranty and it has the two year garuntee and you fill it out (retain a copy) then they will honor it too.
-
Most stores have clauses stating that they do not need to honor pricing errors. This has been tested in the courts, even. (Stores like Dell and Amazon make pricing mistakes rather regularly.) So I don't see how they are obligated to honor anything.
-
wow, 8 pages in only a few hours!
Well looks like most of the questions have been answered. My main concern was heat since the card is pretty high performing, so I expected some trade off in the heat department, but it seems that its been pretty cool for you.
battery is another thing.
other than that there's very little to ask :O although I'm curious if there is any flexing in the keyboard or palmrest (unlikely but doesnt hurt to ask).. and if the right vent blows alot of noticeable air. -

Where have you all been??? The only reason I said they'd honor it based on the sticker is because they already have in the past. The V6Va's were only supposed to have a 1 year global warranty...but they came with a sticker that said two years global and ASUS said it was a mistake, but that they were honoring it...or at least that's how I remember it going down. If It wasn't the V6va, then somebody correct me, but It definitely happened recently on one of the ensemble models, and the sticker spec was honored by ASUS.
I hope that clears things up -
To whoever asked,
The 3dmark05 score of 3900 is about 1000 more than the x700 and on par with an underclocked/stock 6800 go (if I remember right?) and even some 7800's (stock from Dell). From what I can tell, it depends a lot on the clock speed though because either of those to latter cards can go over 5000 with the right tweaks.
3900 is 1000 less than this guy got with his Acer 8204 (has an x1600 also) so there is likely some potential there.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=34869&page=9
The above score is with it overclocked. Stock it was 4100 - not too far from KingDavid's.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=34869&page=10
As you can see he even got it over 5000 once.

Note, david is in the UK, so, for N.Americans, 1 year warranty, and no bag, not sure about the mouse though!
It was the V6va(I have 2 years), but besides that. they all have 1 year. Unless ASUS makes another booboo

Congrats on the beautiful notebook. I'm also curious about battery life, if you could let us know about how much your getting under various situations it would be much appreciated. Can't wait for a full review, this has been a hotly anticipated machine! I'm personally waiting for the next batch of Asus Built-Ons to become available, but these W3Js are mighty tempting!

Can you look up the clock speed on the Core and Mem for the X1600 in that beast. Just wondering if its underclocked. (probbly is)
-
I really like the w3j, except for the fact that the screen doesn't take up the whole panel. I would prefer a regular aspect ratio 14" and have it fill up the panel.
-
-
In the pictures, I see a blueish light on the right side of the hinge. What is that? It almost looks like a power button. Does it always stay on?
-
It is indeed the power button
It also always stays on. Though duct tape can solve that if it bothers you -
Gah, I love duct tape.
(OT here--I have been correcting friends for the past several years by saying that "Duck tape" is a brand and that it's really "duct tape" with a "t". After reading your sig for a couple of months, I did some reading on it over the weekend. From that, I found out that originally it didn't have a name but was nicknamed "duck tape" by the WWII troops for it's water resistant properties and that 3M marketed it as "duct tape" after the war as an alternative use. FTR, I haven't read about WD-40 yet....) -
lol. u really did a good research on DUCKS. or duct tapes. lol.

Looks like KingDavid is having too much fun with the w3j and not updating us

Sleep?? Who needs sleep when you have a brand new w3j to play with?!
-
lol, the w3j gets released right as my finals are coming up =D I know i'm gonna end up playing with it 24/7 instead of studying! doh. -

Looks Great, you have to take that splendid sticker off!! thats just nasty, I recomend doing it as soon as possible.
Also when you get a chance to run it on battery it would be good to see if there is a difference with any usb devices attached, I hear some intel duo chips are loosing up to an hours battery life with a USB device attached because of a glitch the processor that will not go into power saving modes with a USB device attached.
Ps I bet this will be one fast growing thread -
How does the screen look outside?
What is the best way to remove those nasty stickers without leaving marks? -
You can always use some mild detergant (dish washing liquid only).
And make sure it is a soft cotton cloth, the last thing you want to do is leave heaps if tiny scratches from a cheap old cloth.
After all that... as long as you are taking care and watching carefully you cant go wrong.......just take your time. -
When you get the laptop try it and let us know if you can peel those stickers off
-
If you can wait till the end of this month I will let you know, those naf stickers will be the first thing comming off
