I'm in the same boat. The w3j will come just as the last week of school is ending. Thankfully I am in a discipline that is mostly just writing intensive so as long as I get all my papers done I shold be fine. If not, I'm effed bad.

Just wondering, what kind of battery life are you getting out of the laptop with wireless on, screen brightness at ~80% and doing office work?

    Hi everyone

Sorry I haven't been giving you all updates lately, but I have been playing with the computer.

The battery life is not great at all. When having the screen at 80% brightness and laptop in battery saving mode doing web browsing you get around 3 hours. That is with wireless and bluetooth on.

I will be doing more battery tests soon.

Can someone please tell me how to find the speed of the graphics card and also how I might overclock it. I tried to ati tool but it did not seem to work.

    Thanks
    David

3 hrs battery life with just web browsing sounds alright for me. I've purchased the modular bay battery as well, so hopefully that will bring me up ~5. I had assumed that battery life would be sacrificed for the power in the laptop, and I'm comfortable with the trade-off.

The battery life isn't overwhelmingly impressive by any means but I don't think 3 hours is that dissapointing either (in my opinion anyway). I think the SZ gets 3-4 using the integrated card and about the same with a 7400 and 13 inch screen- if thats the case then I don't think 3 hours very bad at all.

Personally 3 hours w/ wireless on is sweet...not to mention w/ 80% brightness.

Shut off wireless (to write) and I'll prob. get another 30-mins to an hour I figure.

If you could run 3DMark05 (the free version is fine) I'd be very interested in the results. You can download 3DMark05 frpm the sites listed at:

    http://www.futuremark.com/download/?3dmark05.shtml

I'm hoping the score will be close to 4000 (typical for the the Acer Travelmate 8200) and higher than the 2950 for the MacBook Pro (which likely has an underclocked GPU for less heat).

I've heard that RivaTuner is a good overclocking tool. Haven't used it myself but you can probably find it through a web search.

he said he got 3 hours with Wifi and BT on and with 80% screen brightness.

For a fact we know wifi will give you roughly 12 mins, but no one has calculated how much batterylife BT uses.

I got a question what level of brightness can you decrease it so that you can still read and type on it, to incraese batterylife? also with wifi on and BT off plz.

    Thanks,

there's a modular bay for another battery.

but as far as finding battery life.. how bout just recharging it to full and see how many hours it says you have left.. or run battery eater pro. should give you the "max" and them from there estimate things down when you factor in other uses. i.e wifi, etc.

I personally think 3 hours is pretty Darn good under those circumstances and with the X1600 running untouched! Lowering the brightness and playing around with a few things, people should be able to get over 3 and a half hours easy...I think that's really good for what this machine is packing. And then you could always add the optical bay battery like other's have mentioned...and/or buy and carry around an alternate main battery for situations where the added power is really needed.

Thanks for keeping us informed...with the latest delays, that makes thekingdavids even luckier to have this beauty in his hands already. I still can't believe the UK already has them distributed to consumers and North America is being delayed even further!!! :)

I agree 3 hours with the 8 cell under those conditions is great especially with an X1600 in it. I will add my 6 cell optical bay battery and I will be Golden.

That doesn't sound too bad to me, if you undervolt the GPU, would probably increase battery life.

Did you have any usb devices plugged in? there is an issue with microsoft and the new Duo processors, if you have a USB device plugged in it can stop the CPU from going into powersaving modes.

May not be the case with the W3J but worth doing a test with and without a usb device attached, see if there is any difference.

    read this:

    http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/01/28/toms_hardware_uncovers_power_drain_issue/

I dont know if this has been the fix has been rolled out yet? there will be one, (it will come out as a microsoft windosw update, but I did see a recent review (last month) of a W5 that had this problem, can drain the battery life by up to an hour! (in some cases)

I have got ATI Tool working now, I had to download the latest version that supported the ATI X1600.

The Default core speed and memory speed are both 450mhz.

I overclocked each to 499.50mhz and I got 3Dmark05 4388! The laptop still feels very cool.

Does anyone reccomend a maximum speed that I should overclock it to? I dont want to burn up my laptop. It does seem very cool though.

Wow that's pretty incredible. 3dmark05 score of 4388!

I am so jealous right now.. thank you so much for keeping us updated. Does it only run warm under intensive / semi-intensive tasks or even during web browsing / word processing?

WOW what an overclock!! Man.. that's like a 500 point increase, ****, you should use everest and speed fan, and run test over long periods of time, to see how active your fans are acting, and see how high the temps are going as you overclock, and then find the middle point.

the middle point being giving you the most increase in performance without having too much of an increase in temp and increase in fan use.

Also try something to undervolt the GPU if you can and test how much you can overclock it. This would be interesting too.

And please do another battery test with a lower but useable screen brightness and with wifi on, so you can browse the net and type on a word document.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

4300 in 05 is good score for a x1600 overclocked, you can go higher, but might not be a good idea, I would if it was a desktop cause then its just a matter of replacing one thing if something goes wrong, but I laptop is what it is, and everything is so close! the heat would be getting a bit much if you go too high. I am curious what it gets in 3dmark06? anychance of you running that?

also, anyone know of a canadian seller that will be getting these in?

CanadaSys will be getting them sometime around the same time as ProPortable. I've also heard Canada Computers will be getting them, and there are a few others. Check in the FAQ in the sticky to see a list of stores that carry asus products.

According to Proportable's website, w/o the optical drive, the system weights 5lbs. How much will the notebook weight with the 8 cell battery and the 6 cell cell battery that goes into the optical drive? Approximately the same weight as the preconfigured system with the optical drive?

Also will undervolting and decreasing the processor speed, slow down the fan?

It is like 5.0 pounds with the travel drawer in the drive bay.

I went down the high street in London at lunch time today and found the W3J in stock!! and because I am heading to the US in two weeks, I can claim the tax back, even with not having to pay postage, paying cash and the tax back it is still 100 usd more than in the states.... dilema wait or buy now.

I actually prefer the US keyboard layout, but after matching a picture from thekingdavids and an image listed on Proportales web site, both keyboard layouts are identical!

What is the difference in keyboards?? is threre any??
