i know the thread above states that the asus w3j will be a 1.66ghz core duo processor, but do you think asus will release the 1.83 version instead. i mean i don't mind if its 1.66, but i would prefer a 1.83

The 1.66 is set for North America, it won't change until....well, until ASUS decides to change it in the future(I would think 3-4 months later).
The Worldwide version will have the 1.83ghz. -
i have one more question did the w3v come with an XP pro reinstall CD. and if so will the w3j come with one.
-
Thank you for the reply Vladgrig, but I was hoping for something more detailed than that. Like what you find for the A7J on ProPortable's website,
http://proportable.com/detail.aspx?ID=176
Or, the A6J on Asus' website,
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1005&l1=5&l2=24&l3=0
I know this probably won't change my mind about getting a w3j, but I like to have all of the facts before ordering. -

Cori, in you opinion wouldn't the W3J cost less than the European version firslty because of the 1.6 compared to the 1.86, and then we all know everything in Europe costs more.
In theory, if you take the price of the W3J in the UK, which is 1250 pounds, convert that into USD is 2200$ then minus the fact that USA is cheaper and minus the 100mhz you'll end up with roughly 2000$ USD. ($2000USD = $2300CAD)
That is what i think, hopefully it plays out cheaper.
In one way its good that North America is getting the 1.67Ghz because IF, BIG IF Merom can just be dropped in and get a BIOS upgrade, then you did not spend much for the 1.67ghz cpu.
BUT if Yonah is not upgradeable to Merom due to chipset problem or the fact that ASUS does not want to release a BIOS upgrade, then we would be stuck with a somewhat psychological thinking slow cpu. lol
That's my thinking.
Thanks,

They all come with "restore discs" which are basically - 1. an OS cd with automatic install and 2. a drivers disc...... If you just want to install the OS without the drivers, you just restart the computer when asked for the drivers disc and you could install those yourself......
-
PHP,
i am sure when time comes we'll see all detail specification before place a final order.
it should be like this one, except processor : http://www.samsungnotebooks.co.uk/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=192 &idproduct=593 -
i just thought if features as webcamera and fingerprint reader are going to be added to w3j later or not?
what guys do you think? -
I was hoping that it would have a webcam also, but I doubt it especially if they strict on using the same chassis from the W3J. I guess not having a camera is the trade-off for paying a really good price for the x1600.
Important question what partition was the W3V formatted in. was it NTFS or FAT32? -
sorry about that prop..
thanx cori for editing that for me. -
According to http://www.asusnotebooks.co.uk/ASUS LAPTOPS/PRE-ORDER/PREORDER.htm

US model differences from above - 1.6ghz / 1 x 1024mb / 8x Super Multi -
Is there a reason why Asus would decided to only put 1.6 in the US version rather than the 1.8 ... that's being release every-frikkin'-where else?
-
Justin,
Will the W3J come with a carry case and wireless mouse? And what's the difference between an 8x Super Multi and an DVD+/-RW Double Layer? -
and we've been through that
price point, if im not wrong. -
-
Thanks for the update justin and for those of you that want to game on a widescreen, checkout http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=32
There are many fixes there for 4:3 ratio games to work for widescreen.

Teflon, nice link for the widescreen gaming site. Lots of information to peruse. That'll come in handy when I have my hands on the new lappy.
-
ah.. thx for the link too teflon. =)
sooo... to compensate for the 1.66 US versions get the 8x super multi..
ok, after reading wikipedia's info on the diff between dvd-ram and dvd-rw and stuff, getting the 8x super multi is soooooo much betta isn't it?
or am i wrong?
after all, from what they wrote in wikipedia, they said that dvd-ram somehow accessed like a floppy disc. and no burning progs are needed..
=(
so the 1.83ghz won't have it? -
I can't determine from any of my searches if the w3j has any type of port replicator/docking station for when you aren't mobile. Does anyone have information on this?
Thanks,
Erik -
I'm fairly certain that I've heard this question before, and if I remember correctly I think the answer is that there isn't one. Perhaps you could take a generic port and fit it to work with the W3, but I don't know very much about that.
-
ASUS does have a port replicator, the ASUS PortBar II, but its nothing big, couple USB's, VGA, S-Video, firewire, and I think that's it.
ASUS should have the PortBar III in the works, or could be even ready to release, but I'm not sure which models are compatiable, and not sure if it will even have something like DVI. -
so you're saying that becasue it would cost more, they're aren't offering it in the US?
that doesn't seem to make any sense...the european markets are generally priced higher for the same notebook why wouldn't they have a 1.6 <cheaper> and we get a 1.8 to even things out? -
Yea, because, for 1.83ghz, ASUS can easily pump the price to $1999.
Which one looks better, $1799 or $1999.
And the CPU is not much different, most people never use their 2.0ghz Pentium M to their full potential, and since in Europe, usually electronics are priced pretty high anyways, I guess the 1.83ghz was the 'default' processor, while Fremont preferred the 1.66ghz. -
I was just looking through the new Asus web-site listing for the W3j and I was curious about a couple of things. Here's the link I'm drawing this from.
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1072&l1=5&l2=26&l3=0
I'm not entirely sure how to interpret the 71Whrs they report for battery life. I know the drain comes from more than just the processor, but is it possible to make a guess at charge duration based on this figure? I would guess not, too many factors. But I could be wrong so I thought I'd throw it out there.
Also, the site lists a wireless mouse and an Asus bag as "Supplied Accessories". I thought it was said these were discontinued? Is this just for the international release? That too would be my guess since this isn't the N. American site. But, again, I could be wrong. -
Yeap, The worldwide version will have those freebies.
-
I think the US version won't have the freebies, if I recall correctly from previous posts.
-
I do beleave Justin stated the Us version wont have them. No biggie.
-
That's what I had heard as well. That's why I was confused. No worries though, problem solved.
-
Here's Justin's post that explains the carrying case / mouse issue.

so it seems it's ok to bump the price in the euro markets but not here? still doesn't make sense, if they wanted the laptop to look cheaper wouldn't they also put a 1.6 in europe? Which looks better with your logic, £2000 or £2200? -
PROPortable Company Representative
Each country has their office seperate office which works like a seperate entity.... the US office's market research showed where each notebook would sell best in terms of price.... to keep the price from last year they needed to use a 1.6ghz - which by the way is an enormous upgrade from the 1.8 dothan from last year -
But it can continue not to make sense for YOU - but if you don't understand what I just said, then nothing will make sense to you. The European market means nothing to the US.... -
-
Sometimes you just gotta say it like it is ;-)
-
-
so is there a set date and price for the European market yet? I will be going to dubai for 6 months on april 14th and kinda need an asus core duo laptop till then. the w3j is one of my favourites because it's small and powerfull.

Freebies i don't really give a toss about, processor speed: meh, what can you do with 1.83 that you can't do with 1.66? Beside drain your wallet at the register and your battery for the life of the machine.
Weirdos.
I just can't wait to rub mine all over my body.
I mean, uh, surf the net while i eat. Yeah that.

lol the king of pants.
Anyways, the W3J is turning out to be quite a surprise, the Touch pad design, one mouse button design with the right click in it.
Some writing on the LID.
PATA? Hard Drive.. yet most Yonah laptops have SATA
Discrepency of screen res 1280x800 or 1280x768/ 16:10 or 16:9
Heat dissipation converstations.
Price roughly 2000$ USD and 2300$ CAD
Lets see how this baby plays out.
Thanks,

Anyway... some answers are simple and honestly that "attitude" is going to continue to be evident in any post which has been stated many times..... Some people say I don't need to answer them, but if I don't, sometimes no one else will....... It's a give and take relationship.... or at least a forum should be.... I give a lot but seem to take more greif than anything else
I guess it all honestly comes down to the fact that there are people who there thinking it's the end of the world that other countries will get a 1.8ghz cpu instead of a 1.6......... when they'd never physically see a difference between them other than the fact that they'll pay $100 or more for the difference. The US has their methods of market research and either you accept them or you take your complaints right to them..... Customer response is what fuels their configurations and putting it out on the forum is actually not going to do a darn thing...... I'd rather you put your own ideas someplace they'd actually have an impact..... So get more involved and tell Asus yourself what you'd like and if there are enough people who respond like you, maybe you'll influence the future. -
Possibly the best post in this entire thread, provided, mind you, without the IPPA (infamous proportable attitude) -
Yeah, that was well said
and your welcome Kansa on the widescreen gaming link....

darn u all for living in the US. sigh.

I thought US is backward in in terms of having the lastest gadgets. Guess there're more unfortunate places on earth

Will the W3J only have a 4200rpm drive? -
