Umm, the 8204 actually is what it is. Its build is solid, nice keyboard and unmatched performance. It is not an IBM, you are correct. But it is not comparable to any of their other lines except the Ferrari (which it is very similar to in build)

About the "heat issue"... if the x1600 is such a powerful card, does that mean we can underclock and undervolt more than a weaker card and still maintain functionality?

you can underclock any of these cards alot. i really dont think the x1600 is going to use more power than say a x700 when on regular load.

I'm just thinking that because it's so powerful, it should be able to go a lot lower and still be able to handle basic stuff. Am I oversimplifying or am I right?

    Hey guys,

There seems to be quite alot of people looking forward to the W3J. I'd like to know what you intend using it for as i'm also interested :)

I'm currently looking for a portable system that's capable of running adobe & macromedia programs. I'll also be using it for watching movies and listening to music. This looks like the perfect system as it looks like it covers everything that i need.

I have a question. How easy will it be to game on the W3J. Will I have to use some Config hax to game on the widescreen in some games?

It is possible you will have to use configuration hacks to get some games to display in widescreen if they do not offer the correct resolution in the game itself.

But this is not a W3j issue, it is an issue with the game you are trying to play. Developers need to start programming their games with widescreen resolutions in mind.

man that's atough question... IS THE 14.1 WIDESCREEN to SMALL for gaming?

My personal view...is "YESH", with a but, the width looks the same as a 15.4", but doesn't have the hieght of a 15.4"...i think its only a 1 or 2 inch difference.

But many may say the 14.1 widescreen is too small...

I suggest make a Poll here... stating Is the W3J 14.1 Widescreen to small to game on or not... and see how the poll goes?

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

Actually, the WXGA screen is very good, for a 14", anything bigger will be an eyesore! And for gaming, wouldn't it be better? :p

As for comparing screen sizes, its pretty much personal preference.

Just to let you know, my desktop which is a 2.53ghz with 512 ram and a Geforce4 ti 4200 128mb... and it does it all! I game with over 10 other apps open like 5 IE, 2 Word Docs, my ventrilo server, my Teamspeak, and doing internet Gaming like WOW and Soldier of Fortune 2 (i don't WOW any more).

I know for sure that Dual Core will definately help me out when i do some graphic designing and one again multi tasking (i am always multi-tasking).

And during the night, while im sleeping my computer is multi-tasking with all of these apps running, first thing that comes on is my downloads, and starts downloading my stuff.

Next AVG which scans for viruses, then Spybot and Adware, and on friday while all of that is going on O&O Defrag is defreagging my 3 Hard Drives (120gb and 160gb).

Yah, so defintaly the W3J can handle this, and alot more, which is the real benefit of dual core :D.

and yes Screen Size is totaly a personal Choice and Coriolis said.

Mandrel, good thinking, like that idea! :D, only problem i don't have a Dell 2405FPW, I am in Canada = no coupons = Dell Cost ALOT $$.

I do have a Back up Monitor, a 15" round screen CRT sitting in my basement now, and i definately don't think that would be nice to game on.

One the price of LCDs get lower down to roughly ~150$ for a 17" LCD... i would be able to afford it and then your right, my problem will basicaly be solved.

But if i buy a 15.4" laptop, i wouldn't have to buy a 17" LCD that cost roughly $250+ (we are speaking in Canadian Dollars (i don't mind buying a good used one)).

So when i take the 14" WXGA W3J to school, its small and thin and light enough for typing, which is nice, and when i take it home just quickly plug it into my LCD if i get one, and game on that. (I like that plan)

Heck i've been waiting for a laptop for 8 months now, if i do decide for the W3J with an External LCD, well i don't mind waiting 2 more months or so.. i guess.. lol.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

Just for kicks here are some detail you may wanna look at.

    ASUS W3V
    13" x 9.7" x 1.29"
    4.8 lbs
    14" WXGA (1280x800)

    ASUS Z70va
    13.9" x 10.7" x 0.87"/1.4"
    6.0 lbs
    15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) Matte

As you can see, the W3V, is 1" less in length, 1" less in width, THIN at 1.29", and weighs roughly 1 full pound less than the the Z70va and roughly 1.5 pounds lighter than other 15.4" screen wieghing in at 6.6, 6.3, 6.7 lbs.

And of course you see the difference in Screen size, 14" vs 15.4" both Wide.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

It's even better when you compare it to a 14.1" computer from another company. (In this case a Compaq V2000z)

    Compaq V2000z
    13.15" x 9.1" x 1.29"
    5.38 lbs.
    14.1" XGA (1280x768)

When I first saw a 14" I thought the screen was too narrow vertically, but as you can see, the W3j is over half an inch longer than this particular 14" notebook (and from what I can find these dimensions are fairly standard). Not to mention that it's lighter and has better resolution.

Am I wrong or didn't we hear way back on the 8th of March that the W3j is in stock in the UK? Afterall...

Is this information incorrect? If it IS correct why haven't we heard anything from anyone? Comments? Answers? Violent Interjections? Anyone?

Quick update........ mid-April ETA for the W3j stands as of this morning.... The only bad news is that the W2j is supposed to be held up and delivered along with the W3j.... so mid-April ETA's for both.

Asus is going to use the W3v release numbers to order W3j's for their release... I know that I've heard from many of you....and last year a lot of "big talkers" decided in the end to wait to see what other people thought before they went to purchase... and then found out stock was low not too long after the release. With the known specs for the new system and a years worth of reviews on the current system - I expect (if it's at all possible) that the first week sales of this model may actually blow last years record away. If that's the case, even the large amount of W3j's being ordered, may not be enough.

We're going to try to start the pre-order pretty late this time and it'll be after Asus has made their final order in terms of first shipment quantities. For this forum anyway, I'd like to get a feel where people stand. About 15% of the initial W3v shipment from last year went to forum members... I'd like to get a count so I can make sure Asus' numbers are in order and try to make sure they won't have a quick shortage. If you're 100% set and dying for the unit, drop me an email directly and make the subject "Asus W3j"... I just want to take a count.... I don't even care if you're going to get it from us or not..... I just want to feed Asus what they should expect upon release.

... and given it's specs and my long term use of the model last year...... oh boy, will it ever live up to the hype..... The only thing that worries me is how Asus plans to top themselves within the next year.... That's a lot to consider, isn't it?

.... In 20 minutes I'd gotten about a dozen emails forwarded to me from my brother to the sales account.... email me directly, not sales. They don't like hearing about advanced orders this and that.... if it's not here to move within a week, they like me to take care of it.

... see the fake hotlink in my sig? It's fake so I don't get more spam, but it's there to remind people how to get a hold of me directly.
