Since the W3J is coming out in the near future, will Asus cut the price of the W3V anytime soon?

I think you may have just missed my post from an hour or so ago... Asus just put a $100 rebate on any of the old V6's and W3's starting on Monday and going through April 9th.

    cool... thx for the info

will it be a universal rebate or would you have to buy it from certain vendors?

W3J looks right up my alley (a college student getting a BS in business). Hopefully, I'll have enough money by your second shipment...

Quick question regarding the W3J for anyone who knows or owns a previous W3 model.

Any suggestions on carrying case/bag? Preferably something that's capable of holding a book or two as well without being 10 times the size of the notebook.

    Thanks in Advance,

    Adam

I think someone asked this question already but it wasn't fully addressed. Will the W3J use a Expresscard slot or a PCMIA slot? Because I've recently purchased a Audigy 2 ZS and it would really be a shame if it couldn't work in this beauty :D

Hey I am also in the same situation, I myself will probably go for a Crumpler bag. I used to work at the college store at nyu and they have a selection there that you can take a look at. In my opinion they are really nice and well designed, nice padding, good room/compartments. They also come in different sizes tailored to your laptop as well as your needs for a specific sized laptop. I think I saw a review in this forum somewhere, it was on somebody's sig I believe. Anyway they should have a website or something, the majority that I saw were shoulder bags, they might have backpacks, I am not positive.

ASUS stopped giving free bags and mice after the 'revisions' made to their ENSEMBLE units back in November, when the warranties were reduced by 1 year, and prices went up/down, and HD size went up, HD speed went down, RAM went up and processor speed went up.

    (Also to SUMYUMGOY)

A nice, slim, stylish (as an Asus fan I assume this is important) bag to try would be the sling pack by Incase designs... Targetted mainly at Mac notebooks, it should work great for the W3J. I may get one msyelf...

That is if I don't cave in and splurge for a BackOffice Backpack by sjdesign...
Pricey but it looks Amazing... If you do a search on it, you'll see what I mean.

Only an express card, or both express and PCMCIA? If it has no PCMCIA, it's useless to me - I need to use my existing WLAN card, for which there is no express card equivalent.

I'm interested in knowing this as well. With Cingular starting to desploy hsdpa in the US, I'm going to need a pc card slot... (plus I wouldn't mind picking up an audigy) I'd consider this a show stopper --for my uses at least.

And yes, my V6J aint got the pcmcia, which i really don't care coz i dont use it

Thanks, yeah Sony has great industrial design. But their support is terrible. I'm very impressed with what I've heard about Asus support however. To me Asus notebooks are the equivalent of the Vaio line with good support so I'm now looking at the V6Va due to the x700 and pcmcia. Mainly for hsdpa and the option for an audigy later...

Thank you for the suggestions. I checked out Incase designs - they seem to be carried at Apple stores, so I'll head over to the mall and see if I can check it out in person.

I also checked out SJDesign and Higher Ground, on the same site. The Higher Ground bags fit my preferences better, both for style and for pricing.

If I find anything else in my travels, I'll let you know.

    Thanks,

    Adam

Well the multiplier for the old banias to a P4 was x1.7 ... the dothan was x1.8... x2.0 to compare to a P4 w/ HT hasn't been given a verified multiplier, but you're very close, if not a little on the low side (which is totally fine anyway)..

Crap. I need pcmcia - I have a quite new $300 pcmcia iburst card, which I need for mobile internet. Sigh - I'd been hanging out for the w3j, in every other way it seemed ideal (apart from being a tad less portable than I wanted)

I guess I'll have to go back and see if I can get a decent Sony SZ configuration in Australia. Or maybe one of the other 14" options - though none has a great graphics card.

Melbourne - and yeah, the current oz Sony models/prices suck - especially the limited graphics ram. I'm hoping they have more options or models by the time the actual release date rolls around.

Alternatively I might still go for IBM T60 (14", 64m X1300) or Toshiba tecra a6 (14", 128m X1400) if Sony don't produce a better option some time soon.

I was trying to estimate the strength of the X1600 mobility compared to the x600 mobility in the W3V... by my estimates it will be at least 2-4X more powerful in 3D Mark 05. Is this an accurate estimate?

2-4x is pretty loose guess. its about double an X700 in my w2v. and equal to a X800pro in a desktop pc. its very fast.

We don't know what the X1600 in the W3j will be clocked at though. Isn't it possible they will downclock it to reduce heat or extend battery life?

It will probably be clocked around the same as the one in the acer and that scores around 4300 on 3d marks 05. i dont think they will downclock it. Because of the built in features its already made to run lower to concerve battery and heat when not being run hard. powerplay freatures.

It could understandably produce a good amount of heat but not enough to damage the laptop. Some complained about the w3v making a considerable amount of heat and it being uncomfortable. Time will tell if the w3j will be the same story...

Since ASUS is using the same chassis, the internal cooling may be mostly the same as well, so the improved hardware (CPU and GPU) need to be able to downclock\be more efficient so the W3j is not warmer than the W3v. This shouldn't be a problem, but an extra watt here and there could make an already warm W3 chassis even warmer.

Exactly; if you spend some time on INTC's website, the 65 nanometer design should inherently do just that; I guess we'll get a notion of this from the first reviews of the Z62f's albeit w/o dedicated GPU...I know the discussion of buzzing, heating and image ghosts would irritate me if it were on mine.

LOL. Do some research before talking.

The x1600 is NOT equal to the x800pro. x800pro is faster, and 3dmark is a BS way of benchmarking. 128 bit memory bus != 256 bit memory bus. You lose.

Sadly, it seems the V6j also has no pcmcia slot - at least according to the specs. So despite looking like a sweet system, it still won't work for me.

Pyro the only way on this site really we show benchmarks without actually framerates is with 3d marks 05. i was simply stating that the X1600 gets about 4200-4300 on 3d05 and on of my pcs at home has a X800 pro and gets 4250 on 3d05. so how am i wrong.Sorry i didnt state exactly that it is equal only in that test. i was simply going by those benchmarks of course they are not 100% you need to go and list actually frame rates if you want to be that specific. I lose i didnt know this was a competition. So plug your trap before you go tell me to do more reasearch.

I'm new to laptops, the w3j would be the first laptop for me when it comes out. 1) Is there usually a power setting a user can choose depending on what applications he is doing at that particular time?

    2) Aside from the sperm count issue, are there any other adverse effects from too much heat in a laptop? I'm guessing it might reduce overall battery time and lessen the life of the components (not sure about this one). Any other reasons?
