Thanks for the replies everyone. I guess I will not worry too much about the LCD's resolution.
Anyone have opinions on getting a SATA hard drive for it? I assume if I went that route geared2play would install it using the included SATA adaptor. SATA might be nice if the 7200 rpm drives aren't available whenever I order.

HArd drive question, Geared2play posted this:
40gb 7200rpm / 60gb Sata 5400rpm
Random Seek= 5.03ms / 5.38ms
Linear Seek= 1.82ms / 1.22ms
Full Stroke= 6.15ms / 3.64ms
Trhoughput= 39000kb/s / 35000kb/s
Since the the pata drive is only 40gb, wouldnt a 60 gb 7200rpm pata drive be even slower because there is more space to look through? I do not know much about hard drives, but thats how I would think about it. If this would be the case wouldn't this make the 60gb Sata 5400rpm a better drive to buy because it is faster and uses less battery power than the Hitachi 7k60?

60gb is actually somewhat faster than the 40 because they have to compress more data onto the same amount of space; physically, the hard drives are the same size... therefore, a 60gb hard drive fits more data in the SAME space, and thus it doesn't have to spin up as much to read data.
60gb 7200 RPM hard drives are really fast []

I have this "sparkle" on mine. I am one of those "geeks" I guess. I would rather think of it differently. I have sold lcd televisons for a while, and have a mitsubishi lcd monitor for my desktop. When I got my z71v I was not expecting to see such a sheen/sparkle/whatever. Basically if its not how its supposed to be then I think I need to get a replacement. Because lcds that I have seen are not like that but I have never really owened a laptop before. Also my brother has a dell from 4 years ago and his is not like this, dimmer screen but no shimmer/sheen/sparkle. Is it just the way laptop lcds are now made because it isnt what I expected and it is not as nice to look at/harder on the eyes when reading?

I was told today in an email that the "sparkle" was observed when your face was 10" or closer to the LCD monitor, and you have to sway your head left to right to see this sparkling effect. In a normal position this sparkle is not present.
My question is, who sticks their face that close to the monitor? Is it me or am I missing something?
CWARD mentioned having sold LCD TV's, its a fact that the further away you position yourself from a LCD TV, the crisper the picture quality is

Folks on other forums seem to think the GPU is quite underclocked in the Z71V. Or doesn't perform as they had hoped. This is, however, going by benchmark numbers. In the real world it's probably not noticeably slower than any other notebook. I am not tech savvy enough to notice, I suspect.

Well.. if you installed powergear....... first start playing with those settings and play with those stock settings first....... once you get the hang of them, you can modify them to better suit your needs. Then why are you claiming that the screen is defective ?
That means you are out to create mischief on these forums.
If you don't know something, have the manners to ask someone before claiming it is abnormal and instigating others to return the laptop.

try reading, I never claimed that people should not buy it, you are being a moron and not reading, since the beginning I was inquiring about this to see if it was normal. I also made it clear it was my first laptop, and I was trying to see if it is just how they are. I wanted to make sure that nothing was wrong with my screen. You inquired to smilepak about it to calling it fluorescent or whatever. i don't know what your problem is but here is my original post on it so that you can try reading this time and see that it was meant with no harm:
"I have this "sparkle" on mine. I am one of those "geeks" I guess. I would rather think of it differently. I have sold lcd televisons for a while, and have a mitsubishi lcd monitor for my desktop. When you read it all I was saying that in my experience with lcd technology I have not seen this. But I have never owned a laptop before and I wanted to clarify that everybody had this sheen to make sure it was not a problem with my laptop specifically and therefore needed to RMA. I am not bad mouthing Asus or anything I like the laptop and it plays games at a decent level. Before you start making accusations as you have done, I suggest you actually read a post because I think it is quite clear as to what I was saying.

OK, can you explain this "sparkle"... because everyone got the same screens and I'm curious why some people love it and (I don't know how many people don't like it) ... but there is atleast one of you, right? ...... anyway...... I'd just like to know exactly how we're judging this. Because the screen used on the Z71v is the same screen thats on the W1n..... and even the people who want to bash Asus' new screens think the W1 has one of the best screens they've ever seen.....
So... I just want to know if this is something you're seeing at 10" away (which by the way would be horrid to your vision) or if this is something that you can see at normal viewing distances........ which I would say are in the range of 20-25"....... other than that I can't imagine how you could even get closer to a laptop screen unless your arms are really short (and if they are, I'm sorry).

I sit probably 20 inches away, i think we are seeing the same thing. My laptop sits next to my desk top lcd, so I think it makes it more apparent because that lcd does not have this. I am happy with the laptop overral, just surprised with the way this effect is, I have never experienced it before. The picture is clear and crisp, and movies and games look really good.
One question I do have is on the resolution, mine is set at 1680x1050, this is the only one for widescreen correct? I tried the others and they looked distorted, but I also wondered if there were specific drivers you can get that give more resolution options.

I am not a geek.
But what I think is that the wsxga and wuxga resolutions make the screens
'sparkle' at full brightness ,so you you need some sort of polarising
filter screens to cut out the glare.,just like you have polariser filters for the SLR cameras.
So nothing defective about the screens as such.
Just my 2 cents...

I am not sure if it is sparke or not, but here is what i noticed..
1) It only look nice at the highest resolution, any other resoltuion it is blurry and distorted...
2) At high resolution, there is a faint rainbow grainy look to it if you look against a white background.
That is my only complaint with the LCD, other wise it is okay.

I pretty much agree with smilepak, I don't know what a rainbow effect constitutes, but I think it looks like the surface of a hologram, thats the best way for me to describe it. if can remember the shiny surface of a hologram. It is not seen on blacks, but I can see it on most other colors. My friend who has owned quite a few laptops, currently has the Acer 1804 I believe, widescreen 17", says that he hasnt really seen anything like it before, he doesnt know if it is just the way the new screens are. again though for him to really notice, I had to open up IE and browse, and then he could immediately tell, because most pages have a white background.

Guys, are there any other notebooks out there that offer the features of the Z71V for such a price? I'm talking:
Sonoma
533mHz RAM (not 400)
128mB non-integrated graphics
good battery life
under $2000
The Z71V is pretty impressive as far as value for the money. Dell i6000 is interesting, but doesn't look as cool and doesn't come with 533mHz RAM. For some reason I've set $2000 as the absolute price limit. The i6000 can come in well under that with super Dell discounts, but the Asus also does very well at $1700 to $1800 with the features I want. Seems that the Z71V is a rare breed of notebook. Are there any similar ones out there that I've missed? -
What sparkle are you talking about.

What is the actual definition of sparkle?
One thing for sure, if compared against the thinkpad I am using now (T42) the Z71V do have a faint rainbow gainy effect to it against a white background. Otherwise, it is okay.
Sad you can only get best clarity at the highest resolution. I would like to go down one notich as it is easier on the eyes.
Otherwise, it is pretty good. Powerful machine I have to say.

Ok i must butt in here again. I dont want to sound like an expert on this but having thoroughly reviewed about a dozen of these up close and personal for reasons of making a proper analysis amidst these questions and concerns i will state my oppinion...yett again
Smilepack:
Great review and agree 99% with everything you said.
I think the reason that some people are finding this screen "odd" is becuase they have never seen others like it. Yes there is something about it that is not like your last laptop. Different and out of the ordinary is always touchy subect. So much so that people will give different a failing grade even though it surpasses all its previous versions. There is one simple fact here. This laptop is made for performance users. Games, mutimedia, hi end use, low end use, and anything you fancy. On an overall scale i say this screen does a great job of its main function....an entertainment gateway. For anyone who find this screen anything other then good quality return it for a refund. If you cant admit its good quality just return it. There is no need to analyse its shortfalls and oddieties. If you dont like it return it. This in comparison is the same thing as the dead pixel scenario. I have a single blue stuck pixel on my 12". On a 12 inch xga res display it looks twice as large on a screen like the z71v. Does it bother me?? Not the slightest bit. Perhaps if i had a couple then it would raise my eye brow. I dont see the pixel when i surf. I dont see it when i look at an image. I dont see it ever unless i glance up at the white screen. That is the extent of it. I rate quality based on its performance under stress. I dont pay attention to the screen when i type on it. I dont even look at it. If the screen has white on it i am either typing without looking or surfing. This screen i am typing in has lots of white now. I dont care what the white looks like becuase i dont look at the white, green, yellow, red, or whaever 2d color you dont find quality on a screen. I care about the picture, the movies, the games everything that is important. Get over it. The screen is the way it is suposed to be. Nothing will change.
PS...In cwards defence. YOu are picky and you do your homework well. Your asking the right questions. You may want to tone it down a little though. There is no need to post the same reply in multiple threads over and over. To me it seems like the screen seems to bother you as it does one other person in n.f. As i recomended to him you should return it. If you have to force your self to live with it dont do it. We allow customers exchange a laptop within 15 days at no charge no questions asked. We allow refunds @ 10% restocking no quesions asked. So far i ve had 0 customers ask for this. Now if we can all agree that this is behind us and we can move on to new things like........When will someone invent a pair of "bicentenial" gloves that will allow you to play games by interacting with the controlled surface instead of using the conventional mouse and keyboard.??? Ye fighting games will be reborn. But it brings a whole new level of game play to first person shooters and custom weapon mods. Anyone ever have "the glove" for the first nintendo? I cant believe thats where it ends. -

Could be samsung....... could be LG... could be a lot of different people.
The only person who knows whats in a particular batch is the person who orders them.... LCDs are subbed out like anything else.... as long as you can meet this brightness, this contrast, this resolution, within in these contrants of viewing angle, etc....... and have a competitive price...... when one company is short on screens, another company will fill in. 99% of the time, you can't tell the difference..... the only case I can remember that there was a difference was with some of the SXGA 15.1" M6n's.... hanstar made a panel that was just horrible compared to the other panel that was being used at the time.
Usually....... the first couple batches are usually all the same. It's not until it becomes really popular that they ramp up production and start to have to source panels from other companies.

Hmmm interesting. I got 5 lcd's and 3 laptops in the office. The laptops are all asus. Z80K, m3n, and m5n. The lcd's are made by benq, sony, and acer. They all share one common feature. When you go lower then the native resolution the quality sucks.
-
My reason for finding out the manufacture and more info on the LCD is I want to see if I could find the INF driver info for the LCD. Other companies out there like Fujitsu offer the INF driver for their LCD which specific exactly the resolution and refresh rate it supports and which looks best.
Since this Asus Z71V don't have one, the only one I could see work best now is the max resolution 1600 x 1050. At this resolution, it looks sharp and clear. However it is a bit small as well. This monitor is the first monitor and LCD I've dealt with which only look good with one resolution. Any other it will look blurry and distorted. Which is a bit unforunate, especially for those who want a little lower resolution for clarity due to their eyes.
There must be a way around this...the search continues...if anyone find anything pass it along...
By the way, I spent the day @ Bestbuy, and Fry's Electronic looking all of theirs LCD and Notebook. I have yet to find one that give the look the Z71V is currently giving. Not saying it is good or bad, just can't seems to find anyone of it close.

Aurora S, here's my attempt to explain: on a solid color screen (bright green is the best one to test, because it's not that noticeable otherwise), the screen looks somewhat liquid, almost shimmering. If this effect is excessively annoying to you, then you should buy a different computer. The only thing that annoyed me about it was that the screen produces such a clear bright green that I felt overwhelmed and needed to change my desktop to something less monochromatic. [
] But even in the solid bright green background, I have no problems with actual use, because I don't really pay attention to the background, and (aside from being bright green) it doesn't distract me at all.
Smilepak, I tried the res you specified, but the text still looked a bit blurry to me. I'll stick with native res. []I can read text just fine in it (once i undo the bright green background!)Ahhh, much better. that green is BRIGHT! [8D]
-
Yeah,
the green appears flourescent and so does the white background.
it does not bother me.
i think the reason is wsxga /wsuxga in a smaller screen.
i have increased the font size to extra large in the desktop display properties and appearence tab.
also in the internet explorer VIEW menu ,you can increase the font size significantly.
