Hi,
yeah britvancouver, istnc told me that warranty repairs shipping would be covered both ways. I haven't ordered yet because, like you, im still trying to make up my mind. Dell's crazy prices on ddr2 ram have gone down so theyre back in the game.
Does anyone know anything about when canadian dealers will be getting the z71v. I'd much prefer to buy in canada even if it costs a bit more, just to avoid hassles that could arise. Are there any other dealers in canada that have a configurator on their site other than anitec and sigmawave?
Thanks,
Sean

I got a email from Asus on March 29, they told me that Z71V will be in Canada in 2 weeks.[

I feel so deprived in Canada. We're like the chopped liver of the world. I guess there just aren't enough of us up here who aren't already too busy clubbing seals or something to be considered a market for the electronics industry.

Who's the comic who said Canada is like a loft over looking a great apartment.. ?
Canada needs to stop getting things through the US.. that takes more time.

We would love to not have to buy things from the U.S., but none of our Canadian retailers take very good care of us, so we're stuck.

ASUS is slow to getting things to Canada...and it seems like we're getting different notebooks at times.

Usually the costs for the Canadian dealers to import as absorbed into their cost to you..... however when you figure on support..... crossing the boarders again could get costly.

2 weeks.. not bad at all. I've been checking with places like sigmawave and anitec to see if they know anything about it. Sigmawave's suppliers say they don't even know if it is going to be available. Anitec has, as of now, not replied.
Thanks,

I live close to Anitec... recently, they got the A6Bne. Nothing special.
But most of their barebones (M3Np, M5N and some others) appear to be "backordered" for some time now... maybe it's a hint that they've stopped ordering them and are getting new ASUS models soon.
I sure hope so! I bought my M6Ne from them

I'm planning to pop on over to canada computers at some point to play with a couple ASUS models in person. They don't have anything spectacular - all old stuff - but just to get a feel for the build quality and stuff I think it would be fun to see a couple of them in person.
You might try emailing a couple of the Canadian resellers and ask them if they have any idea when they might get the newer models. Maybe you can convince them to special order one for you or something. Who knows.

I have a question about the optical bay battery, if someone nice would answer this 'ol, grey haired neighborhood guru!
Does the optical bay battery discharge along with the main battery, or does the main battery drain down first, then the optical battery? Reason for question - if the main battery is low, and I need to remove the bay battery, to use the CD, then would I be without power?
Wanted to use a 2nd main battery, but I can't find a way to charge it outside the laptop.
Thanks in advance!

How does the 3dmark2005 on teh z71v beat the 2005 of the tecra, but then the 2003 on the tecra beats the z71v? Does any of this synthetic benchmarking mean anything?

FYI...
The current OMEGA driver for nVidia is using a very old version of the nVidia driver. It is using Forceware 61.77, while the latest version from nVidia is 71.84. If you are planning to use a mod version of nVidia driver, you could use http://www.dhzeropoint.net/ which uses the 71.84 nVidia driver.
This "might" give you a little better performance in terms between the Omega Driver vs using DHZeroPoint, as the older driver from Omega might not have proper support for nVidia GO Geforce 6600.
By the way, they are working on a Tweak enhancement for the nVidia GO 6800 version as well

PROportable - do you know how small text will appear on the z71v's screen? I know from researching the Dell i6000 that some people are bothered by small text on WSXGA screens, and others think it's just fine. Maybe this question is impossible to answer. BTW this desktop I'm using has about a 15 inch monitor, and it's set on 1024x768 resolution. The highest available resolution is 1280x1024, and when I tried it out just now everything looked, well, pretty small. WSXGA+ resolution is even higher than 1280x1024, correct? So will the z71v's screen have even smaller text etc. than this monitor on highest resolution? I can see it, but it's smaller than I'm used to. I don't know how much smaller I could go comfortably.
I am leaning towards the z71v right now because A. I like it better than the Dell...just a style/prestige thing. Some people hate Dells, personally I have no problem but I happen to like the z71v better. B. It seems more trimmed down than the i6000. Not as many random programs on there, perhaps. C. It comes with 533mHz RAM and a nicer video card than the i6000.
So far, the only advantage the Inspiron 6000 might have is battery life (I LOVE battery runtime...must come from my hobby, R/C cars), price (Dell always has massive discounts), and wireless options (Dell offers wireless adapters other than the sometime-unreliable IntelPRO wireless).
Another random thing. I'll be taking whichever laptop I buy to college, where I assume there will be high speed internet to connect to. If it's wireless then there's no problem. But if things are hard-wired, what kind of port do I need to hook up a laptop to the internet? Does the z71v have such a port? Maybe there's no such thing. I'm a PC noob in some areas.
Thanks everyone for listening to my thoughts. Any input is appreciated. -

As for battery life, the Z71V has the option to use Dual battery.
Also, it is able to control the LCD brightness depending on your surrounding brightness, thus conserve battery at the same time.

Biker, I am from Sterling, Ma. and I have a Z71a. It is basicly the same as the Z71v as far as looks and feel. The Z71v has the 6600 Go and the Z71a has the Intel video. Thought I would offer this, just so you could get a feel for the laptop. I can answer the questions you have about it also if you like. You can let me know. I am only about 1 hour from you.
-
Hi Biker. If you know where you're going to college yet, you can check out their website and find out what places on campus are wireless ready. I think you won't find very many places on campus that are wired instead of wireless. If you live in a dorm, odds are you will have a network cable coming into your room and you can always add your own wireless hub, but otherwise most of the rest of the internet-ready places on campus will be wireless. But you can find out for sure from the college's website.
If you're not using wireless at home right now and you're on a cable internet connection, there is probably a cable that comes into your house, goes to a modem and then goes into your computer. It will be the same sort of thing on campus.
You don't have anything to worry about though, I don't think they build very many notebooks yet that don't still have regular old wired LAN capabilities. There are still far more places out there that aren't wireless than that are. You'll find yourself scrambling more to secure an electrical outlet for yourself in a lecture hall or classroom than worrying about your internet connection. []

lapboy - can we see some pictures and initial impressions tonight? I am looking forward for your review and smilepak. Thank you.

Pictures, we need pictures!
Very curious about how the Z71V looks ... and performs. Hurry guys! -
fords8 - Maybe you could do something really dumb for me. Could you make sure your z71a is on the native WSXGA+ resolution, then measure something on the screen? For example, measure the width or height of the Windows XP "Start" button. Or measure the size of an icon. I guess you'd have to use a ruler or something. It wouldn't be super accurate, but since this monitor here is about the same size screen as the z71a/v, your measurement might give me an idea of just how small everything is on the LCD. Have you had any issues with text/object size on the screen, or is it still comfortably big?
I notice that one site...gear2play or something...has the z71v available with a SATA hard drive. Now, I really don't know what that means except that SATA drives are newer and faster technology. Maybe a 5400 rpm SATA drive would be a good replacement for the 7200 rmp "regular" drive (PATA? ATA100?), since the 7200 rmp drive is sold out.
At this point I think I'd just get one battery. If I need a 2nd one I'll get it when I need it, so it would be newer. I eagerly await battery runtime reports from you guys. []

I am unable to get good pics and host them so you will have to do it.
My impressions:
Build: Feels strong and solid like metal.Don't know what is made up of.Definately does not feel plasticky !
Screen: NO DEAD PIXELS,non-bright/non-glare matte type. No obvious flare or sparkle or light leak.Excellant viewing angles without distortions of washouts.
Keybord.: nice firm strokes,no sag or bend.IBM type feel
No fan noise noticable
Did not heat in One hour of use on AC.
Loaded my own copy of windows xp home and the accompanying drivers.
Windows booted up in 20 seconds.
AC adapter is small and compact. Not a brick.
SATA adapter was included.
A carry bag was also included, of decent quality.
Proportable did NOT charge shipping fee though it was included in the initial pre-order.
Paid 2053 $$ for the whole lot !!
MANY THANKS TO JUSTIN AT PROPORTABLE'
Wireless LAN started on immeadiately upon loading my wep key.
Overall very solid feel and design is great.

I'm thinking about getting a z71v myself, but I want to wait until Intel lowers the prices on its centrino chips. Any info about when this will happen? Last I heard it was going to happen around July, but I don't know whether or not its worth the wait and if the price drop is that significant. I have been "shopping" around websites looking for a good deal for the z71v, but I haven't really found any discounts for a student like myself.
I would appreciate any info from you guys on the price drop or any quality vendors that offer a student discount.
Thanks! -
