Fan is on(CPU load) when lid closed or screen off, but when I log back in, fan turns down

I've noticed that when I close my notebook and come back to it after a while, I can hear the fan going. By the time I log back in (log in required after screen saver) the load disapears and the fan turns down. If I'm fast I can quickly check my CPU temp and see it around 65, when 50 is idle.

    Any ideas?

It's been said that closing the lid can trap heat, which would lead to the increased temps and increased fan. Another possibility is that there might be some process that uses spare CPU cycles and does stuff when the system is idle. Do you have the same problem when you idle it with the lid open?

Hmmmm, good thought with the lid closed, although I should have said it will do the same thing with the lid open.

The screen saver comes on, and then after the specified amount of time the screen with go off (lid open or closed) and then the fan comes on. Not sure if the fan is on when the screen saver is on.

Basically, its as if something is using the CPU when the screen is off. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I require log in after the screen saver/screen off??

I'm going to try and catch it on Task Manager next time I come on.

Definitely sounds like a running process. Maybe you can leave Task Manager running and reorder the process list so it is sorted by CPU load from high to low. Also turn off the requirement for a log in (for the moment). That way you will be able to see what's happening the very moment the screen saver turns off, because sometimes things happen very quickly.

Afaik, the requirement for a login on resuming should not consume any significant amount of resources.

For what it's worth, it was the Aquarium screen saver that would load the CPU. Even if the screen turned off after, as long as the screen saver was running, it would load the CPU and keep the fan on.
