G1S Hot or Not?

So now that we have a review out, some benches, and he know almost exactly what we are dealing with here, do you think the G1S is THE bomb or A bomb? (Buyers and non-buyers welcome!)

 

This computer would have been a monster if it had better speakers....heck, just average.

I will probably buy it anyway....it just looks so damn good!

 

spec wise it is probably the most capable 15.4" system on the market right now. the only thing i dislike is the large thick bezel at the top of the screen. that drives me crazy. if that wasnt there i probably would have picked one up myself. i like having stylish notebooks, as shown by me owning a macbook pro.

 

dude, i totally agree with you on the large thick bezel... it makes the laptop look bigger when its open. i wuldve gotten by now but cuz of that im thinkin about gettin the v1jp refresh which looks sexy

 

Speaker? Laptop speakers are all crap. It's like saying a 911 would've been a great car if it had a bigger boot/trunk (who cares!). Get you a nice set of Logitech / Cambridge Soundworks and annoy your neighbors properly.

 

I expect higher resolution from a 15.4" screen. I know that lower resolution is easier for the video card to drive, but come on! 1680x1080 on a 15.4" widescreen? No thanks! Better to have a normal-aspect 15" screen with higher density 1600x1200 screen. In any event, I can't wait for A8J-replacements...I'm assuming that they'll get the 8600, too, since the A8J and the original G1 shared video cards...

 

A little bit off topic, I believe the G1 is a decent or very good machine but ruined by the, bluntly put, gaudy kitschy looks.

 

I don't care how it looks as long as it performs, has good ergos, has the functionality I need, and is reliable. Therefore, I bought one.

The G1 has a "wannabe-a-gamer" look, with those green things here and there, including the leds on the sides. I more or less agree with E.B.E. Compared to the V1, it just looks "too much".

 

I voted that it rocks. But I guess Im a little biased cause I already purchased one.

 

Eh, how many people are seriously going to depend on laptop speakers of any kind for their extended gaming sessions, esp. on a gaming rig?

Hrm, no Asus 15.4" has more than 1680x1050 though. In fact, the only gaming rig that offers that is the Alienware m5550 right?

I totally disagree The V6 takes the V1 in beauty and build quality. So does the W3, in my opinion.

 

Seriously, someone needs to be posting their GAMING experience with the G1s, not their 3dmark scores which we've known actually long before the release. I want to know how it runs Source, Oblivion, CnC3, etc!!

I wonder why Asus keeps discontinuing their best products...well that's off-topic anyway.

Anyway, I wonder if Asus will refresh their G1 yet again when better GPUs come out...IMO, the biggest incentive to buy the G1 pre-SR was that it held a better graphics card than other 15.4" laptops, but now, every other 15.4" out there will have a 8600M GT...

 

I voted It is pretty cool, Asus only missed a couple of things I wanted. cuz nothing totally rocks theres always something that takes the rock away

I am not buying a laptop just for gaming. I would like to take my notebook outside near the pool and listen to music that sounds at least ok, thats it. Like I say, I am getting the G1s anyway.

I ordered mine today. I'll post how well it does with Vanguard: Saga of Heroes when I get it. Most probably don't play it, but should help show how it performs in general (or explode from a bug).

 

Eh...one would hope that the G1S can play all the games out right now in some form or other..even if at the lowest possible settings and with tweaks.

How is Vanguard as a game itself anyway?

 

Really, not bad. It gets a lot of bad press for everything that it has gone through and all the bugs, but the game itself is quite engrossing. I'd say if you are interested, hold off until September-November. Sony will be doing a rerelease with the first expansion and should include the base game. At that point the game should be polished and have a higher low level population.

I play with a p4 3.2ghz, 2gb ram, 6600gt on high performance and have problems with large groups of people and cities. My brother has a E6600 c2d, 2gb ram, and 8800 gts 640mb and plays on high quality without issues. My friend plays with a a8js on balanced with no problems, so looking to see how the g1s performs.

 

I personally am loving my G1S. I've had the CPU pegged for about an hour converting music in Itunes while I listen to other music, install programs, make configuration changes, etc. Definitely a high performance machine. The heat dissipation is great. It's about 75 degrees in here and the laptop is running cool to the touch.

 

are you saying that the laptop has better cooling than your house?

Also, to whoever said it looks "wanna-be gamer," as a gamer I think it is cool, it is like my favorite parts of gaming rigs with neon surrounding the cooling tubes and light effects on the case when the GPU kicks in. It really isn't possible for the layman to remodel his laptop as he could his desktop, so having some sort of matching between the machines, I think, is nice.

 

Played for beta and 1 month. It felt a lot like EQ2 except lamer. I would probably try LOTRO

 

The G1S is definitely elegant and it uses its lights to good effect, unlike certain other overpriced gaming rigs I could mention (*coughm1710cough*). The bright green WASD keys actually bother me more than the lights. I still wouldn't take it to work though =P.

I played EQ for 7 years, EQ2 for 1 year, FFXI for half a year, and WoW for about 3 months.

I was 60 with full raid gear in 3 months of WoW... way too simple. It isn't a bad game for what it was attempting though. Great starter MMO. I think any laptop out now could run it.

No, but it does (my house doesn't have cooling at all, yet it doesn't have as much heat production either).

When I say cool to the touch, I mean it is not hot. The laptop is staying fairly cool for having the CPU pegged for a couple hours.

 

I wish they would make a "professional" version of the laptop that doesn't look like a toy. Not everybody buying a $2000+ laptop can be 16 years old

Would be awesome if someone sold it without bundled Windows, since I have several legal WinXP and Vista licenses that I could use.

Another thing on my wish list is one of those tiny mouse joysticks built into the keyboard like my old IBM laptop had. Can't play WoW with a touchpad

Except points mentioned above it's one of the most promising laptops I've seen. Definitely considering buying one.

edit: Seems like the Asys F3SV-B1 is what I've been looking for (regarding the appearance). Apart from having slightly nerfed gfx card they seem to have pretty much the same specs.

 

At the risk of derailing the topic again...see Asus V1JP...it's as "professional" as you can get while still retaining all the features of the G1 and more. Of course, you're paying significantly more for those looks and features too.

I hate how Asus cornered you into a T7500 for the G1S, I would rather get a T7300 and save ~$200.

Sure, thats not much of a difference. But it adds up over time. Once the 2.6Ghz come out.....the 2.2 will look a little better than the 2.0....lol

Yea, the price is the only real problem I see with it. I don't like the huge bezel above the screen though, thats kinda ungainly looking.

Hmm I dunno 200mhz on a C2D is a good amount of cpu power. If it was a A64 or a P4 it wouldnt be much. But with how much power a C2D has clock for clock I am kinda glad it comes with the 2.2. However yes the prices for moble chips are not in a good ratio in price vs performance since 200$ is enough to get you a E6600 C2D for a desktop wich is 2.6ghz and can be oc'ed to 3ghz+ easy with stock volts/cooling.

As far as the lights, there is a way to turn them off I hope.. right?

What is the difference in price between the T7300 and T7500? It was a $50 upgrade on my IFL90.

I really like mine a lot. The only downside was fixable, the low WEI score before you run the intel inf update.

 

I still don't appreciate the Fisher Price look.
