the g1s and g2s will be different form that g1 and g2 because of 2 thing
1-they come with santa rosa (like the patriot said) and
2-they come with geforce 8600m gt (which supports DX10)

Heh, well that's not my style but I'm definately very excited about it. I would still prefer a T61P but I need one soon so I cannot wait for Lenovo. When this appeared for sale I just couldn't resist. Hopefully I am okay with the keyboard and it's reliability. Other than that it does seem like a very nice laptop. Glad it have eSata as I do have an eSata drive. Also have a digital camera with an SD card where the card reader will come in handy. I love to game but haven't gamed much in years so I will need to go buy a few. Any recommendations? Crysis is definately on the list.

Yeah I also went with ground shipping... I just happen to be close to where they are shipping from so it will only take 2, maybe three days. Would have paid more if it wasn't going to be here next week, but getting here this weekend is great. Leaves me a week to prep it.

Let me know if there are any tests/games you're interested in seeing.

for those discussing availability dates, Asus is not known for their accuracy regarding arrival of new units. The "sometime within the next 2 weeks or so" answer AlexOnFyre got seems like the best one to go with based on their past info.

    mryerse,
Congrats, I'm seriously considering selling my DTR and going back to portable with the g1s/p, it's just not meant for work/school!

If you have these games , I'd very much like to hear about performance in:

    HL2 Source maxed out

    Fear at best playable settings

    Oblivion at best playable setting

Command and Conquer 3 at best playable setting

    Guild Wars maxed out

Those are pretty much the only games I play outside of Fear and Oblivion which are great benchmarking games... My old G1p played the above games decent but nowhere near the framerate I get with the Sager 9750 on an older 7800gtx. We all know the 3dmark scores but IMO the program is useless in terms of measuring real game performance!

    TIA

    mryerse,
Congratulation from Yours new-near-future laptop ;). I will get G1S too, but unfortunately in Poland Asus next shipment of G1S from will be within the month :/ So I have a little request for You or anyone who will get G1S. Please check memory usage by Vista. How much memory it'll take at start, and how much later, what is the comfort in normal work, with several serious programs (how often system use virtual memory, etc.). Thanks

got my G1s pre-ordered on the 20th, i think it'll be quite an upgrade from my old desktop p4 2.8 ghz , 1gb crap-ram (not on the comp can't look what speed it is . but it sucks), some ati 32 mb gfx card etc. My average WoW fps on all low settings was a barely playable 20 fps. :) Can't wait for my new laptop

Maybe, I haven't decided. I'm going to college and I can't decide between getting a more portable 15.4" plus an external monitor or getting the nice big 17"

    Going to be tough :(

I`m in the same situation as you are, I`m in college and need to take it from tiem to time, but I've decided to go with the 17" cause if you look at the difference between the size of them, the 17" is not that much bigger to the 15,4"

or me the color is not important, but the green is a bit better not saing the the red is bad, but to make up your meand for a color on a 2000$ notebook is not a good idea

So how is Asus with leaving the OS as is on new laptops? Do they load a bunch of un needed software on their notebooks? If so, could someone point me to a good resource for getting rid of it?

They have all the necessary drivers and programs, the only thing that is to be removed is Norton AV and ASUS's LiveUpdate.

There are other programs like the BT and Wireless program that can be uninstalled as well.

Good, sounds like they don't put much bloatware on their systems, I like that. I was planning to go back to XP Pro, but I am now planning to stick with Vista and try to make it work. Don't really want to go through the hassle of aquiring XP even if at heavily discounted price.

One thing I do want to do is clear the partitions and just have one big one. I don't like having a partition for data, one for backup, and one for OS. All my backups go to a different hard drive, and why seperate data from programs with a partition? Folders do the job nicely. In my experience seperating types of data by partitions has only been met with problems of badly sized partitions running out of space. How can you plan how much data you will use? With one partition, that isn't a problem.

Interesting thread... having worked on many computers in my work life, I can say a lot of those processes are not added by asus, but the same applications you would have installed. For example, qttask is from quicktime. Anyone who installs quicktime will get it. And logitech setpoint, anyone installing logitech drivers from CD will get it. You don't need it, but it does provide some features you will lose if you remove it (especially if you use MX revolution). I can honestly say that is not very bad in comparison to other crap I've seen out there, unless I need to read deeper into the thread due to first post not listing much.

Well, I know not all of them. But Power4Gear, NB Probe, Asus live update, Asus wireless manager. They all suck, and they are all standard bloatware. The other stuff is bloatware on ALL computers.

why don`t you chose the IFL90 insted of the g1s? I`m in the same situation but I would like the g2s. I ask this because the IFL90 has a 512 video card
Who much time will the game come for 256 card?

    What?

If you are asking for what the longevity of the 256 is versus the 512, about the same. The 512 will not taper off as much in its final months, but they both will be good for about 2.5 years, then low-end for about a year before they are no good. That last low end year is where the 512 will be able to play mid-low settings, but the 256 can only play low settings.

Is anyone really planning to keep a gaming laptop for that long though? By then, you probably wouldn't be able to run the new games out even with a brand new 512 MB 8600M GT

You probably will. the 8600M GT 256 gets over 3600 3dMarks, added on to the fact that the entire rest of the systems they are in are much faster now than before, these guys should run new games well until next year some time.

These results were a bit disappointing though:

Well as it is, I probably will be too busy to play any games my 3rd year anyway. (probably will be too busy to play any games even this year, but I still want a gaming-capable machine!)

Umm, those are the desktop cards. This has nothing to do with the mobile 8600M.

The performance of the 8600M GT that has been reported is quite remarkable - performance levels previously only available with 17" notebooks with the GeForce 7900GS, now available in 14 and 15" notebooks.

It's here! Thanks to my friend/neighbor for being here to sign for it and lock it in my garage, I do not have to wait until Tuesday (it came while I was out of town).

It's not much different looking than a G1. The main difference are the internals (santa rosa, gpu,) and connectors such as esata and hdmi.

Haven't booted it up yet, bout to go do that and hop online with and see if I can upload some pics for you all.

Review will be done next week sometime, want to do a good job. Never done one so I don't want to disappoint.

What is the flex issue? I can say that when you close the lid, it latches securely. Pulling up on it does not open it. One thing I don't like is that the display seems to wobble a bit while I type. I have a picture and will post it when I can figure out what my FTP password is...

The flex issue is in reference to the keyboard. The original G1 model had a bit of flexing in the keyboard on the left half. Is the same problem present in the G1S? Also, how bad is the wobbling while typing?

Hmm, well I might need to type for a while to see if I notice it, but I can't say I do so far. Not sure if it's me not noticing or the flex not being there. Bottom line, I think the keys have a very nice feel to them.

The wobble is not too bad. Just something I noticed. It depends on how you are holding the laptop. If it's in your lap it wobbles more than on a desk, so you can deal with it.

After a few hours of basic internet use, it's not to hot to use on my lap with very thin clothing on. I'm sure it'll get hotter when doing intense gaming or other stuff, but for normal use it seems to run cooler than my T43 which got really hot.

The 'wobble' isn't a deal breaker (at least with the G1P model). If it's on a desk, you won't see it. If it's on your lap, it does very slightly.

Congrats on your new notebook, mryerse. I hope it serves you well.
