how long do you think it will take you to do that review on the G1S? the waiting for you to put it up is too much....i'd definitely like to read a first-hand review on how good it is.

Thanks. I did notice that everyone's specs state a DVI port, but I was confused as to whether or not it was a straight DVI port or if somehow you needed an HDMI to DVI adapter. If the pics are real and there's actually a VGA port on the video card, that would make it a triple interface (RGB/DVI/HDMI) which I didn't know existed.

I also read on Nvidia's website that the 8600M GT DVI port is dual link, so you can hook up one of theose 30" beasts and get 2560x1600 resolution -- but I'm not so sure if the version in the Asus will have it.

We need a review pronto!! ;)

I'm wondering about something with the G1S, the fancy light on the side, can they be turned off? I will be using a laptop with clients as well as for private use (games ;) ) but I don't want to have green light flashing at the side of the laptop all the time.

    Yes, they can be disabled.

If I understand it correctly though, even when they are on, the lights on the side only flash when DirectX is in use (i.e. while playing games).

That's correct. There is a program called Direct Console, and from there you will have the option to turn off the flashing lights, but also other options with the mini LCD. You can use it to show who comes online on MSN and customize the words and even put smiley's.

I don't now how this works if someone could explain me that'll be great
if I was going to plug a 19" external monitor to the g1s, does the chage from the 15" to the 19" is it done by it's self or do I have to do it, if so what would I have to do?

yey they can be turned off. In fact you may want them turned off most of the time because they are vram dependent(specific vram threshold) and will flash when even watching movies.

so i just ordered one from GenTech but im a little concerned about what i have been reading. Is it true that the G1s wont support DDR2 800MHZ ram? and if it is true, then whats the point of having a 800MHZ FSB processor, which seems like one of the major draws for the santa rosa chipset?

Have you specifically read that it won't support it at all? I don't think that is possible.

More likely I think would be that it might not ship with DDR2 800MHz RAM, due to availability.

The Santa Rosa chipset does NOT support 800 Mhz DDR2. It only supports up to 667 Mhz DDR2 modules. This can be found on Intel's website: http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/pm965/index.htm What this means is that you could theoretically put in an 800 Mhz module in, but it will only run at 667 Mhz, due to the chipset limitation. However, this does not mean that the RAM is a bottleneck, as dual-channel capability means that the RAM has double the bandwidth it would have otherwise. In order for the limited frequency to be a problem, the RAM would have to be at lower than 1/2 the speed of the front side bus (under 400 Mhz in this case). Since the RAM isn't lower than 400 Mhz and is operating in dual-channel, there's no bottleneck.

As a matter of fact, the simple rules of RAM/CPU comparison show that any RAM rated higher than 400 DDR will be bottlenecked by the FSB. (two steps higher (667 in this case) is optimal, so that it can make up for other lags created on the North Bridge with some speed left over so that it doesn't burn itself out) So really there would be no reason for it to support 800MHz, which is twice the matched speed, it would make it more expensive and have fairly minimal performance enhancement. I don't understand why people are so upset about not being able to use RAM that is more or less twice the cost for probably less than a 5 percent overall system boost (if you are lucky and the rest of your system is top of the line).

    http://www.nvidia.com/page/turbocache.html

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbocache

Turbocache was first used in the 6200 series.

In the 6200, x MB of VRAM could use 4x to 8x of system RAM (if I read the nVidia docs correctly), depending on how many lanes of PCI-Express are available.

Since the "official" spec for the G1S in not yet on the Asus website (that I could find), I don't know the "multiplier" to use with the G1S' 256 MB of VRAM ... but I have seen some unofficial specs of 1 GB of "effective" VRAM (which must assume 4 GB of system RAM, since Vista is a dog with less than 2 GB of system RAM).
