The LCD screen on my G1s is noticeably grainy. It's hard to descirbe, it's kinda like when I look at a white screen it's got tiny little bits of other colors, instead of being completely white like my external LCD. When I first got the laptop I didn't notice it..although I almost immediately plugged it into my external monitor. For about 16-24 hours the lid was shut while playing a game on my external monitor. Now I want to know if maybe that did something to the screen or maybe that's not the problem i don't know. any help would be great.
-
Yeah - I have noticed the same thing on my G1S. I assumed it was from the anti-reflective coat on the screen. It isn't really unbearable - especially for a laptop screen. It is my understanding that laptop screens are, in general, not going to be nearly as nice as a desktop LCD.
-
I don't notice it on my matte screen dell, but maybe it's b/c i'm used to my crystal clear "22 lcd
-
My G1P screen isn't grainy. Sounds like something may be wrong with the drivers or the settings, or you may have a faulty screen on the G1S. I assume the G1S has the same screen as the G1P model does.
-
comparing my G1S to my Dell 24" LCD, its color is not so "Shine". Brightness is not so good as well. That's why you feel "grainy".
-
I noticed that too when I got my G1s last night. I haven't really gone after trying to fix it, but when/if I do I will post a solution here.
-
I will refer you to Maunakea's post here on that topic. The settings just need to be tweaked a tad.
-
Thanks redzapper, at first it didn't help but then I saw the EDIT. It does help!
-
No prob. I don't get my G1S until Tuesday but I had that one post printed out - knew it would come in handy!
-
I'll repost my suggested settings.
Uninstall Asus Splendid and go to zero gamma, 50% brightness, and 50% contrast in nVidia CPnl if you want a GREAT IMPROVEMENT in clarity of text, being able to see fill-in boxes on webpages, and color saturation. That leaves nVidia CPnl, Power Mgmt, and Mobility Ctr as controlling the screen. With Splendid (published by Macrovision, so it's an add-on), my screen lost settings even in a simple launch of Splendid.... without touching settings... so I uninstalled it and PRESTO, text is sharp and easy to read, looks like a Vaio notebook screen now.
Uninstalling Splendid removes a major module of CPU pixel processing sitting between your GPU and the LCD. Getting rid of the CPU load, since Splendid uses the CPU, not the GPU, is a second benefit, the first being having a usable screen. -
My screen is grainy as well. Side by side to the G1p the screen on the G1s is noticeably not as bright and very grainy
Adjusting nvidia settings has no effect.
-
Yea, it helped a little but the graininess from before is still there. You can't notice it on a dark screen, but on the web and white pages, it looks like you have a very thin layer of grease/oil on your screen.
-
I think you need to upgrade the BIOS - if it fixes the Graniness - At least this was the case for the last time, if the newer BIOS doesn't fix this, you have to wait for ASUS to release a new BIOS.
-
Is there a BIOS update?, if so can you put up a link, I can only find the AFLASH utility on the ASUS website.
-
There is no "new" BIOS yet.
-
So would reflashing the BIOS make a difference then?
-
There isn't a benefit to reflashing the current bios and there is always the chance that a bios upgrade will fail and you'd have to send your computer in to have it reflashed. -
This not so sharp screen is beginning to annoy me, especially since I expected more, I hope it actually is fixable my a BIOS update and isn't a hardware issue.
-
I've not seen a G1S. People usually rave about Asus' higher end screens to the point that they'll automatically assume that its better than competitor's screens.
Maybe you should give Asus a call? -
has anyone got a asus G1s that doesn't have a grainy screen or do they all have it?
-
There was a poll for your question and I believe most said that their screen was "grainy". What does a "grainy" screen look like anyways?
-
I uninstalled Splendid on my G1s, and installed the video card drivers from the asus web site. But now I dont have the nvidia control panel. Is the nvidia control panel part of the video card drivers? I cant find any 8600m gt video card drivers at nvidia's web site.
-
Try these drivers
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/
Also does your g1 have graininess? -
It has some, but the text and graphics are real sharp. Graininess is only on large backround areas. I wonder if the resolution has anything to do with it. I havent changed mine yet. Did you mean the toshiba drivers? Will they work with asus?
-
resolution changes nothing..still grainy. by grainy i mean it's kinda sparkly too i spose.
-
jwazzz:
Since you have vista, download a driver from this page: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/vista
It would be preferable to choose the latest driver. -
I've been through 3 different driver versions. I've said it before, it is not software,at least not Windows software. The problem is clearly evident in BIOS setup as well, hopefully Asus will catch on and provide a BIOS fix ala what has been done in the past with x1600 graininess issues.
-
Has anyone contacted Asus about that problem?
-
I haven't but I think we all should, the more people that tell them the more likely they will respond.
-
Well, anyone called Asus yet?
What did they say? -
I heard uninstalling ASUS Splendid, their LCD program, perhaps give that a try if not done already?
-
-
Just got my new ASUS G1s today... and IT IS GRAINY!
I uninstalled Splendid, and it's still grainy.... we may need better Nvidia drivers and/or Bios update... Someone contacted ASUS yet??
Moreover, is someone here able to downgrade the native 1680 x 1050 resolution to 1280 x 800??? In the Nvidia control panel, I just have the options for 1280 x 960 or 1280 x 720 (which do not respect the native ratio)...
Thanks for answering!! -

I'm getting my G1S tomorrow and you can be damn sure I'll call Asus if it's grainy.
Now what is encouraging (or not) is that not everyone is reporting a grainy screen. Who here has a clean lcd? -
OT, where did ya order it from? And any modification from the stock config? -
I got it from NCIX at Lucomputer's price (1950 CAD$ Total with tax and shipping: 2129 CAD$) by using the price match. Funny thing is that there's a mail-in rebate of 90 USD$ to add when purchased between the 15th and the 30th of June and my invoice is dated the 15th so I guess it's another saving
(But I NEVER get those mail-in rebates back!!!! ARGH!!)
I couldn't mod it from NCIX so it'll be stock, but I'm thinking of getting myself a 2gb stick since it obviously doesn't work correctly with 4gb in Vista (but I'm sure other OSes are fine).
I'm leaving the HD stock until I can find myself a 200gb drive, then I'll use the 160gb through eSata. -
About the RAM, post some benchies with 2GB ram and check if 3GB is really required to achieve the best performance..
Coz, Fear used to run smooth on my 1 Gig machine and so i find it hard to believe that it requires more then 2GB.. -
I still would like to see some screenshots of the "grainy" screens. It sounds like a fix is required on ASUS's end, and that this issue should be reported by all G1S owners that are dealing with it.
-
Why would Asus release a product that has a 'grainy' screen?
You'd think something so obvious like that would be corrected before they release the product???
Or am I missing something here??? -
I have a G1S, got it about a week ago and my screen is fine. I actually never had any issues but installed the Splendid software as I read it uses the CPU rather then the GPU.
I keep reading about these grainy screens and i keep looking at hi-res photos and various images and mine looks great. -

Atfirst there was nothing but wave after wave of "omg I love my Asus G1S-A1" threads with everybody saying how great it is.
Then one grainy screen thread came about and now everybody is saying they have a grainy screen... I wonder if some people are being paranoid or under the effects of a placebo??
Anyways somtimes correction software like the splendid can indeed mess things up, heck 5000$ sharp HD TVs suck because of there dynamic conrast firmware built into them. But since its a computer atleast you can take that software off.
Im really sure its not the panel itself, I dont know the panel code/specs but asus uses good quality panels, the G2S is supposed to be one of the best screens around. So it is probably somthing fixable software side like how the video drivers are working.
One very odd thing I noticed when ken was benchmarking things on the G1 is that it runs at 62hz.... this is a out of the ordinary refresh rate for a LCD, they are always 60hz, with the exception of certian very high end products that allow a higher one.
I wonder if that may be a clue to the issue, the drivers not recognizing the display correctly and sending the wrong refresh rate, or just a sign that somthing is not right with the drivers. It could also be a sign that its not your normal run of the mill display panel and that its intended to run at 62hz but that means its a new panel type and it may just suck.... -
About the grainy screen.
I have yet to get online, so I can't comment.
The screen on the deskstop and screensaver does seem kind of blurry or grainy though.
However, I am currently watching King Kong and the picture looks wonderful!
But there is something up with the desktop graininess -
I just unboxed my G1S and booted it up. I typing this on my X60s Thinkpad as I have not yet set up the G1S (have to delete bloatware, maybe a clean install, install internet security, etc).
About the screen: I have the G1S side by side with the X60s and I have notepad up on both to compare how a white background looks. Is the G1S screen grainy? Well, I can see how you guys would think so. It's not one of those Vaio glossy screens BUT it looks just like the screen on the X60s. In fact, I've worked with a lot of laptops and to me the G1S screen is quite normal for this type of laptop screen. I wouldn't worry about it. -
I finally got my G1S today! First thing I checked was to see if my screen was grainy. To be honest, I looked in the BIOS, in Vista, played a movie, played Oblivion and I can't find anything that resembles a grainy screen. I actually tried to find it grainy, asked my girlfriend and all but nothing. (Second thing I did is remove the crapware that came with it).
My only complaint about the screen is that there is indeed noticeable leak at the bottom but it's livable. Grainy...? Nope, not mine! -
Other things you noted were interesting vicious, but I think its best to see how asus handles it, then we'll know for sure how much is paranoia and how much is reality.
Good to see a few people say the were pleased enough, glad you didn;t have to call as well, kojiro. -
^_^ I think screen on my G1s is very normally n i like this, but i compare with my friend notebook (Asus G1) dont have big different, only the brightness more light (same setting).
-
can a g1s owner use everest and tell us the lcd used?
I have a feeling this is a new auo screen not the same screen as the g1p but still having the same stats. -
-
I just compared the G1s’s screen to my mom’s T60, and it didn’t appear to be any different. I used word on both machines to compare screen quality. Interestingly, the g1s screen looks almost matte. Perhaps, this is why some have found their G1s’s grainy. The only real difference I noticed was the G1s has a far more vibrant screen. It’s possible that I’m just not that observant.
G1s LCD screen noticeably grainy
