Highly Unlikely. I've spoken with a supplier, and he confirmed with ASUS that he could get me a G71V - with the QX9300 - tomorrow for just $3000..

The only thing holding me back atm, is the GPU. Not sure if it is worth it..

^ if you get it, keep us posted! things seem to be up in the air, right now.

i've now heard directly from two local resellers (Canadian) and read on a website (US), that the G71V has been replaced by the G71G, whatever that is.

pre-orders of the G71V at ATIC, A-POWER, ICI, NCIX and Frontier have all been pulled/changed/de-listed. so *something* is happening here.

    I hope the G71g gets a 9800M graphic card...
That's the thing detracting me from buying a ASUS

    OMFG! 9800GTS? '

but wait, thats the refresh of the G70, the SLI 8700GT notebook. This is the G71 were talking about. there two different models. HEs asking about the G71 upgrade and what GPu that might have.

BTW, that should be SLI 9800GTS cause of their "dual barrel" thing with the G70.

Actually there is a huge rumor(i know secrets :D) there WILL be a 9800m GTS SLI!! The base model will have one 9800m GTS and an upgrade with the core 2 extreme will have the SLI 9800m GTS :D

yeh, i know that, im talking about teh g71. You know. The red and black one, not the SLI one. Im thinking about what graphics the refresh might have. It just doesnt make sense that Asus would jump from one 9700GT to SLI 9800GTS.

I think this supposed Refresh is due to the pressure being put on from various comparisons, including one done by Toms Hardware. They compared it to an Odachi, a np8660 and a Alienware m17x. It got its *** kicked.

there's a possibility on 9700m GT SLI this is my guess though that would rock actually and probably kill the 8700 SLI

I just got the G71v today (I'm from Slovenia) and it was great for about 2 hours. And then out of the blue it died (it seemed like it ran out of power but it was connected to the electrical network) and now it doesn't turn on anymore. In about 20 or so tries it turns on for about 5 seconds and then dies again. The laptop was idling at the time and was stone cold. And I'm losing it here, cause there is nothing I can do at all, except return it to the store tomorrow.

Gentech's site says its in stock for $2029, but its being replaced by the G71G. Which I actually don't know much about, but thats what the G71V order page says.

Well, yes, based on the different suffix, that would be the logical conclusion. Now the question is, what does the G71G have in it? Presumably a better graphics card, but we'll see.

from what i know about asus is V has always been greater then G historically so if this is the case maybe a lower end G71?

The prefix V has always been greater than the prefix G. However, the suffixes only denote platform/technology, so I highly doubt that the G71G is a lower end G71V.

I don't have the time for pics right now, but will post them later.

Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53 GHz (wanted the extreme model but we don't have it yet and I reallycouldn't wait anymore...)
2x2GB 1066 DDR3 ram (maximum capacity is stated to be 8GB so I guess there will be an upgraded model pretty soon, or you could just upgrade it by yourself if you really need the memory)
GeForce 9700M GT with 512MB GDDR 3 memory
2X320 GB 5400 rpm harddrive (which comes with 4 partitions set up by default (each drive has two partitions))
    and the Blue-Ray drive.

The notebook feels generally very solidly built with no squeaks or losely fitting parts. Oh, and I got the MX518 optical mouse and the ROG backpack with it (unfortuanetly no headset, which I also need). This is it for now, will check back later. You are welcome to ask any questions about the laptop.

I'm sorry but I'm not at home and I don't have a digital camera on me so I took this with my lousy phone... Really sorry about the quality. But I promise to post some high-res pictures soon!

Oh, and the screen resolution is 1920x1200. If you want any specific pictures, just ask and I will try to post them as soon as possible.

Ok, I was checking the specs and I found out that I have 32-bit Vista installed on it. The OS is supposed to be the included Vista Ultimate. Anyone have any idea how to change it to 64-bit? It may be something really simple (I know I need to format my windows instalation, but I was going to do that anyway because I want to set up RAID). Will 3dmark it when I will have the time!
