the facts of the display are pretty amazing

    Maximal: 388 cd/m²
    Durchschnitt: 355 cd/m²
    Ausleuchtung: 86 %
    Helligkeit Akku: 358 cd/m²
    Schwarzwert: 0.34 cd/m²
    Kontrast: 1053:1

    even the benchmarks of the 620m gpu are quite good, ~7500 3d mark06 and 1150 3d mark 11, around the level of the 540m, even compareable to the 550m ( ~ 1100 3d mark 11) ....

It will have at least one option with Core i7-3517U.

Too bad the UX32VD is not a unibody like all other Zenbooks.

What do you mean, where did you hear that it won't be unibody, all I've heard is it will be the same as the other zenbooks, just a bit fatter.

Both the original UX31 and the UX32VD have seams on the bottom with screws, they both seem unibody to me, in fact the bottom of the UX32VD looks nicer, with big speaker grills (at least they look like speaker grills).

    it's not unibody, it's a sandwich constuctrion, metal/plastic.

sRGB mostly fully covered? that screen sold me to this beast. byebye, samsung s9...

    Over 6000 in 3dmark 06. Saying its equal to a 540?

Not bad. It seems to run Diablo 3 well on medium, but is that natively at full HD? Because that would be impressive.

Will Guild Wars 2 run well on this? since it's ULV, that will be the question. 4 hours of battery with wlan on... Not enough for a whole day at school, but could be enough.

Now its Sony and Apples chance to show me their Vaio SA and MBP13 comparisons, if they can beat this. Asus looked like they got it right. Backlit keyboard needs to be a standard on ALL their laptops, period. And also a good display? It's hard to argue against this machine.

the display is great and those results made me think of going for this one instead of the thinkpad x1 carbon, however the battery life is abysmal.

Now I stand corrected the gpu on this one is worth the heat that it uses.

What's the word on UX32VD price (1080p model)? Some sources say $799, but I don't know if that's believable.

Anandtech said 1299.99 I don't think it will be that expensive since it only allocated 22GB SSD and rest of of it is HDD.

All those FPS you see in notebookcheck are at 1366 x 768 (EDIT: ok not true, the resolution is stated in the picture). So no, it is not native resolution. But I've heard some reviewers of the 1080p ips say they need to increase font size on the zenbook, to read web pages. So maybe it's best that you run games at 1600 x 900 on medium, instead of aiming for 1080p. And just use 6x anti alasing to help improve the image (even though I know native looks sharpest)

My understanding is $799 for 24gb ssd hybrid with 320gb HHD, with 1366 x 768 TN display, ULV i3 ivy bridge with a 620m gpu. The $1299 is 24gb ssd hybrid with 500HHD @ 5400rpm with 1920 x 1080p IPS display and a ULV i5 ivy bridge and 620m gpu. And the $1499 or $1599 one is the same as the $1299 one, except it has a ULV i7 processor

EDIT: I typed this on my iPhone at the time, so I double posted. Not sure if a Mod helped clean that up or if the site did that automatically, but if a Mod did that, then Thanks!

Not sure yet, assuming is because CPU and GPU are under tight wraps. I am hoping at Computex we will know more and soon after have an official comparison, price and release date. I really need a new laptop.

Personally, I am getting the 620m because I want to be able to play guild wars 2 and Heroes of Newerth on Medium. Hopefully in 1080p, but if its too laggy then I'll just reduce the resolution and put on 6x anti aliasing. Also Getting the Full size HDMI port and another USB 3.0 port is nice for the VD, over the UX31A.

I'll probably game 99% of the time on my home desktop, but It's nice to have the option to play those games if I'm on vacation/work trip and gotta kill a few hours in my hotel room for some reason.

This is from notebookcheck's GPU chart

That 21 FPS avg at 1920 x 1080 for Diablo 3 might reach 30FPS avg if you reduce the quality to medium and take off Anti Aliasing. You don't really need AA turned on, unless you are gaming on a non-native resolution. I'm gonna wait for a video review from some youtube people, and hopefully that will show me more about it's gaming performance at different settings

same but im mostly gonna be playing bf3, skyrim, etc. more demanding games. Even if i did lower it to medium with no AA, i still think it will be too weak. i would love it if the 640m somehow made it in there :p

Yah I wish it had a 640 Kepler too. Besides I'm only gonna use the GPU when I plug in the zenbook anyways, so I don't care if it has a higher TPW. Maybe weight and size had something to do with it? But then again I see some previews for 14inch laptops with the 640 and they are still under an inch thick (maybe 0.8inch) and about 3.5lbs? Either way, the power would make buying this a no brainer if it still was about 3.5lbs and less than an inch thick

the tdp isnt about battery drainage. its about the thermals. the zenbook prolly wouldnt be able to cope with the heat

ah, would it need a better fan or cooling system? would that take up more space/weight?

I just gamed with my friend whos using a 560M Graphics card, and he says he can play pretty much all games on 1080p with Med/High graphics. If the zenbook with the 620m can run guild wars and hon on 1080p with medium, then I'll strong consider it. but I dunno still. Maybe I want to wait for another IPS screen laptop with a better card and under 4lbs, 13-14inches. Not sure

the 560m=640-650m this generation.and yeah it would need a better cooling system meaning more/better fans which would increase weight and thickness

I just read the dualcore review at notebookcheck for the new ivy bridge CPUs

In Review: Intel Ivy Bridge Dual-Core CPUs - Notebookcheck.net Reviews

The summary at the bottom says the i3 and i5 are good bang for your buck, but they suggest avoiding the dual core i7 because the added cost to performance ratio is poor. Instead they said to go with a quad core. So if I get the zenbook, I'll aim for the i5, $1299 ux32vd.

As for comparing the laptop. A fair comparison would be the ux31A to the MacBook air with 128gb SSD. I think the MacBook air is $1300 and comes with a hd3000 intergrated graphics, while the zenbook has hd4000 and is $1100. Maybe the processors are different. I'm not sure and am to lazy to check cause I'm using my iPhone to type this

Yeah, they are different, Apple hasn't released Ivy Bridge macbook models yet, so they're last-generation Sandy Bridge processors. That explains the different GPU as well.

If you're interested in getting a macbook, i'd wait a couple months until Apple announces their refresh.

Yes I am, if that laptop comes with the option of an IPS display at 1600 x 900 then I would totally buy it. I just really don't want a display with bad viewing angles or colors not producing the way that they should (washed out)

    chip.de is like bild.de

and contrasts up to 3700:1, lol, never with a notebook screen.
notebookcheck.com reviewed the ux32 and i think the new ux31 have the same screen.
wide angles, somewhere to 100% sRGB, blacks around 0,3cd/m² at full brightness(380cd/m²).
Should be one of the best notebook screens that have ever been built :)

Does anyone know when this thing will be released in the USA. And where to purchase. Also, have any of the other competing ultrabooks been released, and where can we purchase those or at least pre-order them? Why has this laptop been released in the Philippines already but not the USA??

Hm, strange. I thought the UX31A would come with WiDi, but I don't see it mentioned anywhere on Asus site and in the driver section there is also no fitting driver. So it probably doesn't come with it :(.

On another note, does it still use a traditional BIOS, or does it use UEFI and supports a GPT?
