Everything I've been reading about this laptop has me really excited to pick it up! The only question I've been having at this point was if there were any brick and mortar stores that have it in stock yet in the US. I can be a bit impatient about waiting for delivery, as well as the fact that I like to actually be able to get my hands on it before I buy it.

I keep checking Best Buy and Fry's websites, but the UX32VD hasn't shown up on any of them.

I have a question regarding this "ASUS smart detector". Is it working for you?

The idea is that when you type on the keyboard, the touchpad shuts down, and to activate it again you have to touch it in a certain area (which can be set by the user). See more in the ELAN smart pad control panel.

Mine, however, does NOT shut down, at all.

Any solution to this? I have a fresh win 7 install, the problem existed in the original install too.

    I have a UX32VD

I'm wondering that as well. It's annoying that there hasn't been anything as much as a whisper about the UK release. I also thought we'd get it fairly quickly (hoping that it was before it crossed over the pond if I'm honest) since the rest of Europe got it! Instead we're dead last again. :(

I don't think you will see it in Best Buy for at least a week or so after it appears on their website.

Actually, I never heard of that and it has been one of the major complaints that ASUS didn't have anything that shutdown the keypad when you were typing. I guess I will have to investigate. Where are you seeing it? I can't find it in the ASUS programs list. Oh, I see it now. It has options for detection area and whatever, have you tried tweaking them?

Looking at Amazon.de it's now not available there either till some time in July, which is not good!

Perhaps it's turned out to be more popular than thought.

Unfortunately I have to get this by about the 20th of July so if it does not come out soon I'll have to go with an alternative.

Literally no mention of a UK release date, hope it is soon!

If there was anywhere else in Europe that did it with the Qwerty keyboard that would be good, but I can't find it anywhere!

There was no mention of a US release either and then it appeared overnight.

Has anybody tried wireless display and does it work?

Yes, I have tried the settings too, the different sizes, I have tried to deactivate it and restart the computer, and so on.. :( the problem seems to be that it does not activate (meaning deactivating the touchpad) at all.

I can type with one hand, and still move the pointer with the other (even in the corners of the pad).

I saw a post about it somewhere, about a ux31e, that had the same problem. ASUS had told him to do a system recovery... I'm going to try and contact that person to se if he/she has found a solution.

They must have slipped this in at the last minute..there are some reviews out on the web that were done on pre-production models and it was a complaint that they didn't have this feature. Hopefully they can get it to work(or maybe they had i and it didn't work then either). I just tried mine and it is the same as yours where I can still move the cursor while typing with one hand.

Did you have to modify your SSD to install it or did it fit just fine with the case it came in (did you have to remove the outer shell, etc, etc...)?

Hey all, so far Ive been enjoying my UX31A no major issues with the computer itself.

However I am experiencing a really odd technicality when streaming youtube videos. What happens is Ill maximize the video to go to "full screen" mode and after a few seconds my cursor will disappear. Even if I click on touchpad it doesnt show up again, and therefore I cant exit the youtube video unless i press the windows button, right click on mozzilla icon, and then click "close window".

    How can I solve this?
    Thanks in advance for help.

    Note for Canadians:
I walked into a Best Buy yesterday to ask when they might have floor models of the Zenbook Prime. She checked in the system and it wasn't even there as pending - it's going to be a while.

Also, NCIX has some stock of the VD but again, no floor models.

I just want to give the damn thing a try...!

Just want to say that upgrading to a Samsung 830 style SSD makes a world of difference in the overall speed of the system. Takes about 30 minutes or less to swap out memory and the harddrive.

Agreed. I installed mine along with my ram last night (Fresh windows 7 install too). I've been working on a full review with various benchmarks. The OS is way faster. Photoshop cs6 installed insanely fast. Also photoshop opens so quickly I barely have time to read the startup intro screen. I plan on trying to such some huge resolution panoramas as a test. Light room 4 is super quick too. My windows experience HD rating is maxed at the highest possible 7.9.

The only game I've tested so far was portal 2 which loads very fast. I'll post up all my benchmarks and screenshots soon.

Ordered my UX32VD-DB71 from ExcaliberPC yesterday (I guess before they ran out of stock), and had it overnighted with some of the money I saved not having to pay tax on Amazon.

As with other folks, I am seeing some backlight bleeding. As with others, it's not a deal-breaker, as it's only going to be visible in very dark movie scenes - not noticeable in normal operation.

Of note is that the baseplate in the UX32VD is made of some thin/flimsy metal, definitely doesn't feel as sturdy as the top plate. It has some give when pushing on it, and may be prone to denting if you place it down hard on a pointy object. This is probably the only negative I can find about the case. Other than that, it seems very well put together, and on the whole I'm happy with the build quality. The UX31A will not have this issue of course.

Now I just have to wait for my SSD and memory to show up! Come on UPS...

Is there any way to fix the backlight bleeding? Or keep sending it back and hoping for a fixed one?

How flimsy is the metal? Just curious, as I will be a college student so normal wear and tear is expected...

By the way, just got notice that the UX32VD is in stock at Newegg right now: Newegg.com - ASUS UX32VD-DB71 Notebook Intel Core i7 3517U(1.90GHz) 13.3" 4GB Memory DDR3 1333 500GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M

Doesn't look like there's any way to fix the bleeding. I thought you might be able to insert like a thin piece of paper between the bezel and the screen to block it, but it seems to be coming from a layer inside the screen. Again, though, it's not noticeable at all unless you're looking at a black screen. I don't think I'd plan on sending them back until you get a good one, either. Reports in this thread seem to indicate that the majority of units have the issue, so you might be setting yourself up for frustration.

As for the base... Best way I can describe it is like a baking tray or something, only thinner. It's fine around the edges where it's bent, giving it structural rigidity, but you can definitely press it in quite easily in the middle. It has 1-2mm of give. Again, not a dealbreaker by any means, just something to be aware of - and maybe a reason to pick the UX31A over this model if you don't need the upgradeability.

So I am all in. New Egg just got stock and I got the e-mail. Ordered that, a stick of the 8GB Mushkin ram, and a 512 Crucial 7mm SSD. With overnight shipping from New Egg only be $55 and NO tax... it was a no brainer. Here's hoping I LOVE it!!! :D

Hopefully someone can find out if that disable trackpad while typing function can be properly activated somehow. I've tried it out to, but I can't get it to work either :(

I was afraid that would be the answer I'd get! haha :p My brother had it on his computer and he told me he didn't like it and it caused crashes and the browser to slow down :( Have you tried it? Maybe I'll give it a try..

My first UX31a-db51 received from Amazon had a stuck green pixel in the middle of the screen. I sent it back. My replacement has another stuck green pixel and then a dead pixel. Sending it back tomorrow, I don't want a replacement at this rate. My buddy ordered the same machine and and 3 keys did not work.

    Quality control, ASUS?

$179 for Sandisk Extreme 240 GB SanDisk SDSSDX-240G-G25 240GB Extreme Solid State Drive - 240GB, SATA 6 Gb/s, Noise Reduction, High Durability, 2.5 at TigerDirect.com

However, I believe that is a 9.5 mm not 7 mm drive?

Faster than the Crucial m4 though I believe, yes?

Another question, how hot can this thing get before it causes issues with the CPU, etc?

HWINFO is telling me that it is running at 59C while I am outside standing in the hot 100F sun (able to read the screen in DIRECT sunlight, damned impressed by that) but the case is starting to heat up a bit.... :)

Well... this is a toss up.

The SanDisk is a LOT faster than the Samsung:
SanDisk Extreme SSD Review | StorageReview.com - Storage Reviews
    Samsung SSD 830 Review (256GB) | StorageReview.com - Storage Reviews

But then the Samsung uses a fair amount less power (nearly half as much in some cases)...

So I guess... do you want speed or power savings?

Does it even matter in the end compared to the screen's power draw?

Other issue, the Sandisk appears to be 9.5 mm while the Samsung is 7 mm... so the Sandisk Extreme you have to remove from its case to install....

I choose the Mushkin for it's lower required memory voltage. This usually means it's more stable, even if it DOES run at the higher voltage.

And if the motherboard IS smart enough to run at the LOWER voltage... less power, longer battery life??? It's a little thing, but it can add up.

Well, I'm looking at my order on Newegg.com right now. The laptop is still in stock, so no reason to think I won't get it tomorrow or Friday, but the while the SSD and memory are shipping from CA (and I've received an email saying they shipped), the laptop is shipping from NJ. Makes me think they may not have processed the order in time to ship same day, and it may ship tomorrow. But, I can't say for sure. We will see.
